On a recent visit to Tucson to visit family, I took my 4 & 1/2 year old son to the Desert Museum. The overall experience was top notch.

The park and facilities are quite nice, very clean, and beautifully integrated into the desert surroundings. The exhibits were interesting to child and adult alike, with a nice mix of exotic desert flora and fauna. My son particularly enjoyed a hands-on dinosaur fossil exhibit where kids (and dads too) can play archaeologist for a day digging up faux dinosaur remains. I was particularly impressed with the docents who know oodles about the exhibits and seem to genuinely passionate about local desert wonders.

The Desert Museum is one of the best attractions around. Although it's named desert museum, it's really a mix of zoo, botanical garden and natural history exhibits. The animal enclosures are large and integrated into the natural desert landscape, so spotting the local javelinas or coyotes can be a fun game.

Be sure to wear your walking shoes, as most of the exhibits are outdoors. There are water coolers along the pathways but it's probably better to bring some bottled water along in the Arizona heat.
