Our party of 6 arrived @ 5:30pm on May 23rd. We were greeted by the owner and treated with great respect for the majority of the evening. Our courses of food arrived quickly and the wine was a great addition recommended by the owner (3 bottles). The duck livers were the least favorite item ordered. At 8:10pm, the waitress (possibly pastry chef) came to our table and stated that the next party was here for our table and asked that we LEAVE! There were other open tables which could have been joined together as were the two we occupied. We had just dropped more than $100 per person in cash (as they prefer here). This was a first for all of us and it will be our last visit to Da Flora. Too bad since we had looked forward to this visit for a couple years. In the future, I will believe negative reviews a little more than the good ones. Da Flora's were about 50/50 and this should have told me to beware.

Da Flora is my favorite! I am a local in North Beach and eat there at least once a week. The Chef [Jen], is amazing in the kitchen. She puts her own touch of love in every dish that is served. The gnocchi is the signature dish at Da Flora which is out of this world. Mary Beth's Foccacia is wonderful and makes my mouth water! Pricing is a bit expensive, but portions are rather large. The wine menu is outstanding. I recommend letting Da Flora pick out the wine for you. She will never let you down. You will never be rushed out of there. The goal is to sit down and enjoy the ambiance. If you are looking for a place to eat & dash out really quickly, than this not the place to go! Cheers!

I've been going to Da Flora for years. For a year or so I just walked by and looked. I won't bother with superlatives because everyone of them has been used to describe this wonderful place. Cookbook writers, TV restaurant critics and just people like me. It's my place for my birthday, where I take my family when they're in town and where I take my friends who love good food and wine and don't have preconceived notions of what a higher priced restaurant should be, who have no predjudices against different lifestyles and who are willing to embrace eccentricity. Without fail, if those guidelines are adhered to an all-round wonderful evening is had by all.
If you have a bad time at Da Flora it's because you copped an attitude. Noone, however, should fault the food. We all know it's good.
I find when I travel to another city, country or go to a restaurant outside MY usual comfort zone that if I arrive there with arms wide open to embrace all I can be offered I receive treatment in kind. I have been with friends, however, who have that chip on their shoulder that so many of us think is our privilege as citizens in this fine country and they all feel they're justified when noone extends a welcome or kowtows to them and their unfortunate attitude.
If you go to Da Flora with the same kind of respect that you expect when someone is in your well-loved space, you will have a lovely time and be happy for it.
It is expensive for MY budget but it's not expensive for what you get. I'm happy to eat at home and save my pennies to be able to go out to a good restaurant for an occasion.
So go to Da Flora and embrace all the eccentricity, wonderful wine and food. You won't regret it.

I created an account here just in order to respond to a negative review I saw for De Flora. The writer talked about rude service. My guess is that in fact whoever wrote it was either rude themselves or perhaps has an issue with assertive women. In any case I wanted to say that this is by far my favorite Italian restaurant in San Francisco and I've tried many. I come here as often as possible even though North Beach can be a real pain for traffic and parking. The food is fantastic and the service not only isn't rude its personal and warm. I've been to Italy a few times and Da Flora is the closest experience I've found to a nice Italian restaurant.

I must defend Da Flora. I am from Boston and happened upon this restaurant as a nice dinner out before a show. Sure, it's a little different, very small and the feel is vintage (which I love) and my husband and I have done nothing but rave about it since our visit.
We walked in without a reservation on a busy Friday night. We were dressed nicely and surmised the owner as Da Flora as the down to earth woman speaking individually to each table and none the less made the experience that much more memorable. We were surrounded by locals who were kind, made recomendations and raved, with good reason about the food & owner.
My husband is vegetarian and our server was able to make suggestions and substitutions on the menu to accomodate him.
We started off with an appetizer of gnocchi that was served with fresh baked bread....the best, freshest bread. The gnocchi was fresh & delicious and was followed by the roasted duck for myself and pasta with butternut squash for my husband. We continued with dessert and cappuciuno-all great.
It truly is refreshing that at Da Flora, you can enjoy your food and wine without feeling rushed.
OK, if you are looking for a chain or chain-like restaruant with robots for servers, no suggestions and rushed service-do not come here...but if you want a nice dinner out, at a one of a kind place where you can relax with your wine, have a great converstation with your dinner companion & know that the owner has based her wine and food menu on qualitiy please come here...it's one of a kind.

I have never in all of my dining experiences been exposed to such rudeness and outright abuse from a proprietor/server in my life. I would absolutely not ever recommend this place to anyone. It was recommended by a local SF. I should of considered the feedback on this site and gone with my instincts from the moment I made the reservations. She made such a big deal about the time not working for her. When we got there we were the only ones in the entire place! That should have been yet another clue. The ordering was a fiasco. Our party of five was celebrating what should have been a special occassion. She bullied us and rolled her eyes on several occassions. When I tried to correct our drinking order, she basically told me to shut up. She still got it wrong. If it wasn't for our local SF guest who joined us, the others would have gladly walked out. As far as the food, nothing to write home about. The menu offered few choices. All the dishes ordered were completely tasteless, poorly presented, and overpriced. The gnocci although good was not enough to save this place. To add insult to injury, two women were seated behind us, and she was almost what appeared to be flirting with them while we were completely ignored. Did I mention service sucked? Enough said. For amazing service, food and jazz music go to Cafe Claude, you will not be disappointed.

My boyfriend and I had made a reservation at a place we thought/heard was one of the better italian restaurants in North Beach. We waited at "the candle" for about 10 minutes (intruding on others dinner) before we were seated. (At the worst table in the EMPTY place). We ordered an expensive bottle of wine that the waitress/ owner didn't even let us pick out ourselves... We were never asked how this wine tasted! Once eating we both became very thirsty for some water, (which was never given to us) we were never able to ask because we had no server to inform. When it came time to receive our check we sat at our table with no water, no wine, and no dessert! All the while the owner is handing out present to the table behind us and sitting with the table across the way. Overall we were at the restaurant for an hour and an half, thirty of which was spent waiting for our check. I have never felt more discriminated in a restaurant in my life!!!!
I will never recommend this place to anyone!!! If the owner ever wants some fashion advise please email me! OR just a pony tail holder...

The owners of this place should close shop if they cant provide courteous service to their customers. The woman who owns the place is the rudest, roughest and most ungracious proprietor I've ever encountered. We didnt understand why she was so discourteous to us, but after reading others exeriences, I know this service is given to just about everyone. I wont even mention the food - with that type of service, the food is irrelevant. If there were no stars, that's what I would give this place.

Although this restaurant had a nice wine list, above average tasting food, good location, fairly decent ambiance the service was lacking. We were seated promptly, then waited a while for someone to come by to take our order. We were served fairly quickly once we ordered, the salads were very good. Soon after we received our main course. The knochi was the best I have ever had. The pasta dish was good but could have used a little more salt. There was no salt or pepper on the table. After our meal it took them at least 1/2 hour to bring us the dessert menu. We finally ordered the pistachio cake, which was delicious however we were told the coffee was still brewing. Finally we received coffee but only one cup! Instead of asking for another we just shared the one cup. If the service was better we probably would return to this restaurant however there are too many other restaurants in San Francisco that have excellent food AND service.

I have just had dinner at this restaurant and was very disappointed. Over priced, poor service. I asked for water 4 times, the 5th time I had to get up to find a server to get water. They were not very busy, as I can understand a busy restaurant, I used to wait tables. Took a long time to take our order, then took a long time to get our dinner.
Food was very small in portions and over priced. Warm, almost cold.

I would skip this restaurant and walk a block up to the others. I've tried many in North Beach and all are good.

We heard about this place on Check Please Bay Area and have liked some of the other places featured on this show. We did read the reviews here before we went there, and so were prepared for most everything we encountered. We made a reservation, they were pretty good about getting back to us since we had to leave a message for the reservation.

We were give a choice of two tables, one is far back on at the entrance, we chose the one near the entrance since it was by the window and therefore brighter.. that took care of the darkness and cramped feeling.

Flora was not too pushy with us, actually I think she was a bit floored by my assertiveness and did not trying pushing anything on us, including the wine... in fact she agreed with my choice. Of course it was a $15 wine that was on the wine list for $45.

The food was good, nothing spectacular but the portions were really incredibly small for the price. The portions are the right size if you have two courses, they just cost about 20% more than you think they should cost. And none of the food really wowed us, especially since I make Italian food at home all the time. The ingredients are good, and it's ok but we will never go there again since it was not worth the money we spent there.

Flora is an interesting person, crabby and curt especially if it is not obvious that you REALLY want to eat there. If you have a reservation, she's ok since it means you planned on eating there. If you are a walk-in and she tells you it's a wait and you say I MAY be back.. she gets snippy and rude. Since we were at the entrance, we saw this happen several times.

Bottomline... it's ok.. not worth the big bucks they charge, for the rude service. If you are a regular that she knows by name you get treated differently. Don't think it's worth my time and money trying to get to that level in life, I have better things to do and food to try out.

I have to agreet with some of the reviews here: the service was incredibly bad. The food was delicious, especially the cuttle fish ink risotto; however, it could not dilute the bad taste left by the rude service we received.

If you are the type that can ignore the quality of the service and just focus on food, I recommend this restaurant. But if you can't, don't give yourself a chance to have an evening ruined.

These folks operate a fine little restaurant serving an always changing menu - handwritten daily - of Italian (and a few Hungarian) specialties. The room is perfect, tiny and gorgeous, and seems sort of out of place on Columbus. They serve perhaps the best gnocchi in the city, made with sweet potato in a cream sauce with bits of crispy pancetta. The appetizer portion is small, so get it for yourself and don't let anyone else near it, or ask for an entree portion. Don't waste the sauce, get it with some of the unbelievable housemade focaccia. The pastas run good to great, usually standing up to the best the city has to offer. The other dishes are more varied, with typically more than one seafood choice, with more pluses than minuses. Beautiful salume, and the risotto often excels. This is not spaghetti and meatballs, and not pizza, so check out the menu outside before committing. ...also, wines are limited but well-chosen.

Note: The proprietors are VERY nice people, but Flora in particular does not suffer fools (or boors) lightly, and can be brusque. Best to ingratiate yourself and show some manners, the payoff is well worth it. (And shouldn't we all be doing that anyway?)

We are locals, but had guests visiting and we decided to try this place out. Unlike other reviewers, our service was too fast...almost like they were rushing us, to turn over the table quickly. When we asked about beer, we received the evil eye and a short "No beer, only wine" reply. Food was alright, small portions and definitely not worth what they charge. I swear the only way this place stays in business is because of it's location. It's a shame that the staff is so miserable that it taints everything else that clould be charming about this place. I hope they read their reviews or get a lesson in real Italian hospitality!

little pearl in the madness of non authentic Italian food of North Beach. I recommend their creamy gnocchi (to die for, note very small portion). Orecchiette with greens, like the real authentic thing you would get in Ialy. Go for the pistachio dessert you will still dream about that for days and days...wine is expensive but they have a great selection. Go there for the food and the Venetian ambiance not for being treated like a king/queen

No dining experience will raise one's expectations like a birthday dinner. I was excited when my wife told me we were going to Da Flora for mine as this was one of the few Italian restaurants we hadn't visited in the near decade we've lived in S.F.
We were initially charmed by the devoted Venetian decor. Having traveled throughout Italy revelling in the regional cuisine, we were excited to be transported back to the location of our engagement!
European service is slow for a reason. The relaxed pace is consistent with the culture. This should not be confused with forgetting about you, which is happened to us at Da Flora. 15 minutes after the first server brought us our bottle of wine, a second server unapologetically asked us if anyone had taken our order yet. Incidently, the most affordable bottle of wine is in the $45 range, unfortunate for a country famous for its reasonable Chiantis. We shared a bruschetta appetizer which was tasty.
Back to the service...I had to ask two different servers for a glass of water.
We had the pork bolognese and pesto linguine entrees. Both were prepared nicely.
Back to the service...I had to ask two different servers for more bread. I should note that I'm really not that impatient and will wait up to 10 minutes before my second request.
The last straw was dessert. The restaurant knew it was my birthday as my wife informed them in advance. After our empty plates sat on the table for at least 10 minutes, our original server returned, offered dessert, then later delivered it without even a candle. I could tell my wife was embarrased. So much for a "special celebration."
As the server returned with the signed credit card receipt, she patted my shoulder and said, "oh, by the way...happy birthday."
This was a fitting finale for the very lackadaisical attitude we experienced the entire evening.
Overall the food was good, however, if you're looking for a pleasant experience to compliment good food...look elsewhere.

We rate this as one of our favourite restaurants - having arrived in from Australia that morning, we were looking for a special place for our wedding anniversary dinner - we stumbled across Da Flora....what a wonderful experience - the pasta was perfect (what WAS in that sauce?), the crisp white wine from Alsace was superb and the setting sublime - 5 years later we still rave about Da Flora and can't wait to return...while Australia is blessed with beautiful food and wine, Da Flora still stands out as a wonderful place for dinner - well done - we hope to be back soon!

Pros: Great setting, top service and the best pasta sauce ever

not for someone who likes silly waiters. Great food kept simple. The experience is amazing.
the wine is to die for if you are a fan of Italy

Da Flora is a hidden gem in North Beach. It is quiet and unpretentious, with a unique handwritten menu. The sweet potato gnocchi with sherry cream sauce is one of the best dishes I have eaten anywhere- ever! Even a simple salad of greens with a few shavings of parmesean was delicious and satisfying. We walked in early on a Saturday night and were able to get a romantic little table for 2 with no reservation. The service was casual and friendly, but very professional. Overall, a great experience.

Although small and modest in a physical sense, the food turned out by the chef surpasses that of every other "Italian" restaurant here in the city. The menu is not huge; it is comprised of those plates deemed appropriate for the current freshest ingredients possible. Gnocchi is superb, sole divine and the carpaccio so good you will want to make a meal of it. Try the cucumber, leek and feta salad... fresh and satisfying. The wine inventory is excellent and has many (most, I think) wines that you will simply not find on wine store shelves or in other restaurants that simply follow directions, lemming like, from wine distributors on what to order. DO ask FLora, the owner, about pairing a wine or wines with your dinner. Since she is the wine finder and buyer, she knows the inventory well; her recommendations on white, reds and dessert wines were great.

Some other commentators complain about service; I had nothing but polite, efficient and cheerful service from a staff busy tending the restaurants guests. Let's face it.. if you are polite and exhibit a bit of warmth and kindness, it will be returned by Flora and her staff in spades.

Da Flora is a terrific find: eat, drink and enjoy.

I truly feel for anyone who's had a bad experience here. I took a friend out for his birthday on a Wednesday evening without reservations and were astounded by the entire experience. We hail from Boston and were raised on traditional mom & pop Italian from the "North End". The food here left us grinning ear to ear! With a vague description of our taste in wine, the perfect bottle was suggested. We wanted to take our time, chit-chat over the course of a few hours, and they were accommodating to our every request. The salads were fresh, crisp and perfectly seasoned. The fresh corn ravioli was expertly prepared and presented. The proscuitto side dish, per suggestion from the chef, was amazing. The staff was casual and unintrusive. We plan to frequent this quaint little trattoria all summer, in anticipation of the fresh produce and creative genious of the chef!

My wife and I were in town for a night, and around 6:30pm we thought we'd stop in Da Flora for a nice glass of wine. The woman who greeted us in sweatpants told us they didn't serve just wine, and that they were serving dinner now, and they didn't do this sort of thing. Looking around at the nearly empty establishment I said we'd be here only 10 minutes so they wouldn't lose out on a table for long. She then made a big show about taking the tablecloth away and huffing and sighing. I then asked if they had any cappucinno for my pregnant wife and they said no, they only had regular coffee and hadn't brewed any yet, and made it abdundantly clear they weren't going to. Well, I'll NEVER go back there again.

I went to dinner here with a few of my friends last night. After reading about the bad service and unpleasant times that others had, I was a bit apprehensive. Imagine my surprise when we were waited on by the owner and received good service! I enjyed my experience and we were actually the last table to leave for the evening. I can't say enough good things about the wine selection or the gnocchi. Everyone should try this restaurant. Give it a shot and you won't be disappointed!!!

My gf and I live in the neighborhood, and make a point of giving every restaurant around us a chance. Well, this one definitely made it into our list-- the never-go-again list. We wish we'd read the reviews before we went. Worst attidute, worst (outright bad) wine, and just so-so food. We complained about the wine, and the response: the lady just walks away! Not a word. They never once asked how the food was.

Like another reviewer, we also felt like others were treated better--probably the regulars. What I don't understand is, how can someone be a regular in this place? I've done my share of restaurants in life, and believe me, I can tell a good one when I see one. If you want good Italian food, stay away from Columbus. That's what I've learned after living here for a year.

This was one of the worst meals that I have ever had ecspecially for the price. The food was awful and over priced. i ordered risotto which turns out ot be their "signature dish."I ended up getting a bowl of peas with with a scoop of risotto. To add to that it was bland. The waitress treated me and my girlfriend with no respect but treated every other couple in the restaurant like they were better than us. First she messed up on the reservation, we waited around for a little more than two hours and only ate for about 15 minutes of it. When we called to complain they told us it wasn't our type of restaurant, that it was a restaurant for people who enjoy food. They attacked my knowledge of food and service even though I am a chef and I've worked in restaurants for awhile now.

It's hard to understand how people who make such delicious food can be so clueless about how to treat customers. The truly exceptional pasta was completely overshadowed by the unpleasant experience of interacting with the authority figure on duty. We arrived for an early reservation and were given the worst table in the restaurant, uncomfortably close to kitchen traffic, though the place was still empty. "That's just the way it's going to be," she said by way of explanation. Our complaints finally yielded a better table, and she let us know she was doing us a big favor in seating us there. After dinner we were given the check and asked to leave because they needed the table. This request seemed especially rude considering there was apparently nobody waiting to eat. My worst dining experience in 25 years. Great food.

A friend recommended DaFlora since I was in San Fran for business, the gnocchi is about the only good thing this place has going for it. Although the service was not rude it was certainly not WARM and we were left waiting for awhile when there were 2 other people in the restaurant on a Wednesday night! Another group sat down and after waiting a bit too long...left, wish we would have done the same.

Had reservations for a Friday night and they sat us on time. Ordered the "famous" gnocchi and it did not disappoint. Flavors were awesome, but the portion was a bit small. Three different salads...butter lettuce w/ blue cheese...another one with pomegranete seeds...ceasar w/ anchovies. DELICIOUS! Favorite entrees were the linguini w/ caramelized anchovies and brandy sauteed duck liver. Desserts were done just right. A little more expensive than most places in North Beach and corkage was $20 per bottle, but otherwise, we had a fantastic dinner and will return very soon.

Da Flora is one of San Francisco's hidden gems with exquisitely delicious food and ambience. Maitresse d' Flora is Hungarian, having studied in Venice, she has made a delightful combination of the two cultures. On a recent visit, Flora had just returned from Budapest with fresh paprika and had just made a delectable roast pork with spectacular paprika sauce. The pork I've had here is some of the best anywhere, including a supreme house-cured pork chop. Let Flora delight you with her exquisite, rare wines, many unavailable outside of Italy. Consider yourself lucky to get a table here, one of the City's great artistic gourmet experiences. Unsurpassed sweet-potato gnocchi and creme brulee.

I am so surprised by the earlier-posted negative comments! I had an absolutely charming experience there last night. The staff were all friendly and down to earth, and you can tell they love what they do. The food was incredible! We enjoyed our blissfully delicious gnocchi appetizer so much that we ordered a second one. The menu is small but very Venetian and very unusual-- not your red sauce, veal picatta kind of North Beach joint. LOVED this place---- even the bathroom is charming! And btw, they do NOT have a cash only policy. My Visa was accepted without hesitation or comment.

Wow! We have finally found out local restaurant! Lived in North Beach for 2 years and finally went to dinner here and wish we would have gone sooner. The best food we've experienced in SF or anyplace in a very long time! The service and atmosphere is wonderful and it felt like you were eating in a friends home. The owner came over to our table on her night off to suggest the wine, the chef came out after dinner to introduce herself as we had to meet the person who made the best gnocchi we've ever had! Cannot say enough positive things about this quaint little place.

Da Flora serves extremely good food and the menu has a seafood slant reflecting Venice's symbiotic relationship with the sea. To truly enjoy your future Da Flora experience, just follow a few rules: call ahead, bring cash and order wine. Da Flora does not market itself as a tourist restaurant and as such, once one gets beyond perceived service shortcomings, a truly unique SF dining experience can be had.

I have had dinner there several times. It is my favorite place to go for an original homemade italian meal in North Beach. The owners have quite a personality and love what they do but this attitude is refreshing and feels more authentic than most places. This is definitely NOT average and it won't leave you indifferent. Try their great wines and amazing desserts. They are to die for...

We just had a bad experience. I brought my wife and cousin to the restaurant which had two open tables. The hostess approached me and said that the tables were reserved. It was obvious that they were not reserved. We were dressed appropriately. I then asked approximately how long the wait would be for a table. She replied:

"Come back later and we'll talk."

I could not believe what I just heard. We promptly left the restaurant and had a great meal at another establishment.

this place was my favourite surprise. this isn't the kind of italian restaurant one expects in america, but it is like so many new style eateries in italy. the owners may not be italian residents, but they are italophiles to a maximum. listen to them describe the plates and wines, and you think it's about making love. every dish was frightfully rich, and makes a life of decadence sound wonderful.

My girlfriend has been telling about this place for over a year, so when I finally got to try it I had fairly high expectations. My expectations were exceeded. The food was excellent. The small restaurant charm was just perfect for a little Venetian / Italian restaurant. And the service, although a bit brusque, is part of the charm. Regulars know to expect this from the very knowledgeable owner / chef -- it's her place, and she'll serve you if and how she feels like it.

This place can be very romantic, and may well become one of my favorite places in the City.

I have been several times and the food has consistently been amazing. The restaurant is unpretentious. The service is a bit abrasive. The restaurant is fairly small and cannot host parties larger than 4-5. Popular dishes do sell out fairly early in the evening. Good value for great food.
