April Fools Day Massacre at Casa Esperanza Homeless Shelter
Every year on April 1st. Casa Esperanza turns out onto the streets of Santa Barbara about 100 homeless residents. They are literally evicted from the homeless shelter.WHY? Because Winter is officially over. Regardless of any individuals situation, out the door you go. The staff during this period are stressed out and heartless towards the people they evict. ACCOUNTABILITY, Casa Esperanza staff isn't required to have any, compassion isn't necessary either. From the tatood biker chic to the thug looking counselors Casa Esperanza needs a re-vamping. Top/down corruption and dysfunction is rampant and this is from the staff there, not the residents. Imelda, Mike, Board Members, please consider humane actions and not business decisions $$$ when dealing with your clients. SB beware, Casa is headed in the direction of becoming a shelter which will only service the homeless mentally ill (more grant money available) you think there are problems now on the Milpas corridor, turn loose over 200 mentally ill people and see what happens. Perhaps 1 staff member at Casa has the education and background to deal with the mentally ill population, the administration could care less, it's the funding that counts to Casa now, not the homeless. The Milpas Assoc. has scared them straight into the arms of converting a homeless shelter into a shelter to treat and house the most severly mentally ill from all over the state. One requirement at Casa should be residency in SB for at least 5 years before you get accepted into the program. Currently over 75% of the residents have not been residents in the County for more than 6 months. Someone at the Board of Supervisors or City Council iasn't asking the right questions, permits may be in order but the Staff at Casa and the direction they propose to take can only be detrimental for all residents of the Milpas St. area and the City. Honesty and Integrity two qualities sadly lacking with Casa Esperanza Staff.
Why is this occurring? Because no one, not even Casa staff care about the homeless. Lip service does equal provider services.

I am a disabled 42 y/o woman, who was recently thrown out of Casa because I asked if I could get help with a rental unit, and apparently asked too many questions,.. I am disabled and was just released from the hospital. Hey, Mr. Mike Foley, your place is run by a buntch of idiots who have NO interest in helping anyone out of being homeless or access to the Federal Funds to make it happen, I hope an attorney or the Attorney General will contact me in regards to Casa Esperenza, I have alot to tell them.......

the employees at the shelter have been taking advantage of the homeless people for years, having said that I have this to say, it is a shame that this is allowed to go on, but' They do have the best street counselors that I have ever seen in a shelter, they have so many cases on their hands that they just go through the motions so they can get paid, if you disagree with any counselor they will tell you to leave. It is a shame because they have the tools in place to help but as long as they get free money they continue to do a lousy job, the Director spends about ten minutes a day at the shelter how can he possibly do his job servicing the homeless with that little time, he looks after two hundred cases, and says he does his best' They all are taking advantage of the poor and they will get their just rewards, because when you do someone wrong the Lord knows it and it will not go on very much longer, I went to the newspaper with a story that was true and they refused to print it, even though they have a responsibility to its readers to print the story. Where there is money there is corruption, also they do have some staff that really tries to help, but if you ever notice they all have good salaries and drive new cars, and the staff that really cares like sharon, Ken williams and his wife are true christians they serve the poor and try to help, but they are stonewalled at every turn, they have a charter to provide washers and dryers to the homeless and they don't, just follow the donations and the money and you will find the answer, it currently is under investigation at a cost to me and I assure you that soon very soon the apple cart will fall.

I spent 5 months at Casa Esperanza in 2006 - 2007 .During that time i was able, through my disability payments, to pay rent of 300 per month and the rest of the money I received was placed in a savings account so that I could save money to move out on my own. During that time I was guaranteed a bed, food 3 times a day and access to counselors, doctors and nurses. My primary counselor was attentive, available and compassionate to my needs.
While at the shelter I became ill with a fungal infection of 4 cm mass in my right lung called cocciomyocosis that hospitalized me for 5 days. The staff (Kitty and several others) were attentive and called an ambulance as soon as the doctors knew I was in crisis.
I will never forget the care I received while I was a resident. I will ever be grateful for the safe place to lay my head at night so that I could arise in the morning with hope for a new day. Even though some of the residents could be a challenge, my lesson was to be non judgmental and I learned compassion for the less fortunate.
I was sober one year whenI left there with 900 dollars in savings and was able to check into a sober living womans home where I then stayed for another year gaining much enrichment in my new life.
If I ever find myself in the situation of no where to go again I would definityley count on Casa Esperanza for my survival. It is all about attitude. Gratitude to have a roof over my head and a safe place to lay my head and all I had to do was honor myself others and the rules. I have not had to take a drink since then.
My love for Casa Esperanza has allowed me the opportunity to make anonymous donations to the shelter however meager.
Thanks and I hope that if I am ever in that situation again I can count on you and that you never change.

The management at Casa Esperanza were rude, condescending and as out of control as the addicted and mentally ill clients circling aimlessly.
Services were out of reach because of the registration process used there. The food is hashed at and served by rude and (I don't give a hoot attitude) Mexican cooks..It is a despicable shame to purposefully destroy good food products with ignorance and hatred.
For real help do not go to Casa expecting anything but a screwed up meal at 11:00 AM
