It doesn't get much better than this quintessential sf resto. Interesting yet approachable dishes & an incredible staff make it outstanding!

Went for brunch the day before Easter...bf had foie gras panini...I had the duck and scrambled eggs on country bread. Both were a-ma-zing.

Vinny (awesome waiter!) gave us great suggestions for drinks to go with and even treated us to a scoop of ice cream after we determined we were too full for dessert. He said "I know you're full, but you HAVE to try this."

Burnt sugar...UNBELIEVABLE. Really out of this world. Vinny was right...I would go back to SF just for that ice cream!

Great experience overall.

Cons: Only beer and wine...but we survived

Savory morsels await you here, from fois gras to yellowtail crudo. Surprisingly even the simpler dishes such as the gnocchi are very tasty. $$$ for the price and they only serve wine and beer FYI. There is no sign outside except for the numeric address, so if you blink you will miss the darkened doorway access. This is very nice place for a date with nice ambience, dark mood lighting. Reservations recommended and parking is bleak in the mission so take a cab for sure!

Bon Apoetite!

On a recent jaunt to SF my friend and I made our way to just about every place in the new eat.shop.sf guide. Zuni, Boulettes Larder, Swan Oyster Depot etc and so forth and on and on. Out of all of that many things stay in focus and many more things fade to the backround. Our night at Tartine burns bright. We were shocked to find an reservation at 9 pm on Open Table, we booked it to a cab and huddled in the doorway waiting for our table. We were super comfortable and understood that people were lingering over dessert, the hostess was lovely offering her apologies (not needed!) and two glasses of sparkling rose for our troubles (hardly troubled but grateful for the bubbly) We sipped the delicious elixir while waiting only moments more and then were ushered to a tiny table right in the center of the room. Every piece of cutlery was perfectly placed, and the waitress was right there to attend to any need. We ordered the asparagus and goat cheese salad, which seemed simple enough but arrived an beautifully complex pile of leaves and vegatables. Next up the Marrow and arugula. The marrow was intense and fatty at once off putting and irresistible, I needed a good pinch of salt to melt into unctuous stuff but it was nowhere to be found. I am sure had I bothered to ask it they would have given it to me- but I was too busy enjoying myself to bother. Next I had the Quail stuffed with fois gras and my friend had the Lamb. Both were really delicate, perfectly executed and beautifully plated. For dessert we shared a chocolate ? tart with earl grey ice cream - wowza! All the while the dining room glittered, the executive chef roamed the room making sure everyone was happy, the staff were attentive without being overbearing. It has changed my expectations of food and service for ever.

Since I love the bakery, I was curious to try the restaurant. We walked in on a Wednesday night about 10:15 and were told they were closed but that they would be open until 11 on Thursday. So we came by at the same time the next day and were quickly seated. Service was prompt, informative and comfortable and correct. The menu was eclectic enough to sound intriguing. The bread was crusty with a luscious interior. We ordered some simple salads with beets and a mustard/whole egg dressing. Best salad I've eaten since I can remember. I had the charcuterie plate (rabbit terrine and chicken liver pate) and my partner ordered scallops with cauliflower puree. Both were so good we finished the bread wiping the plate. We shared the roasted banana parfait for dessert. Totally up to the Tartine standards of excellence. I will be back here again and again!

One of the best meals and experiences in SFO. We've eaten at some of the best restaurants in SFO and if I had only one meal on my trip- I would choose Bar Tartine. The people were incredibly happy and friendly. Delicious may not do the food justice. The mix of interesting flavors was amazing.
It's more casual- you could go in jeans or dressed up. If you don't like sitting close to strangers, this may not be the place for you.....

All in all a MUST-- Z & J

I was a bit shocked that there was practically nothing french on the menu, yet, the restaurant is called bar TARTINE!... ok, i was hoping for french food that night. Let me tell you that everything we (6 of us) ordered was awesome. The staff was typical mission street district, with an extra twist of pleasantness. I highly recommend trying this restaurant.

Great place if you're seeking a unique dining experience. The menu was limited, but filled with food that you would not normally find in the inner mission. Amongst the marrow and pork belly, I managed to find gnocci and it was the best gnocci I've ever had , short of traveling to Italy. As for the dessert menu, there were plenty to choose from and among the four of us, tried two and the plate was cleansed.

We, a group of five, walked in there a few weeks ago on a Thursday evening around 10PM. Very few tables were still occupied and we were the last diners to walk in. Nevertheless that it was late, etc. we were welcomed and enjoyed great food (the truffle gnocchi were amazing!) and very nice service. The place was somewhat non-descript from the outside and we kind of wandered in there almost by coincidence. The interiors are warm with and the dark finishes lend a very cozy ambience. Can't wait to go back.

This place has made it's way to become one of my top restaurant picks. I've been there more than once and have yet to be disappointed. Where do I begin? The bread is wonderful (How could it be less than that given that it's related to the bakery?)! It was chewy on the inside yet crunchy on the outside. The cheese plate was delicious and went well with the bread as a spread if you chose to eat it that way. Rather than get the entrees, my group orders many appetizers so it's tapas-style dining. Of all the ones we've tried, the ones that stand out are the sardine bruschetta, fried green tomatoes, manila clams, and chicken pate. Others are also very good but I can't remember their names. Remember to save room for dessert as that's the best part (for me at least). The neapolitan is light and crunchy with a wonderful coffee-flavored ice cream; the Bergen tart is divine (It's chocolate so how can you go wrong?); and the Bergen bon bon with strawberries and sorbet is unbelievably good. The service staff is pleasant and attentive.

Delicious & not as expensive as you might expect if you are a fan of Tartine the bakery. More urban sophistication than you find at your average SF spot.

Look for the "Curtis Hotel" sign because there isn't an obvious sign from the street. We had the Lamb Stew, Summer Squash Salad and were licking the plates clean.

The assortment of cheeses is also to be recommended....served with Tartine walnut bread, honeycomb, and fresh cherries.

I read a review here about Bar Tartine recently which contradicts all the experiences I've had there. This place has great food, wine, and ambiance, friendly/attentive staff, decent prices, great location--what else do you want? I love going there.

Showing up at a restaurant 5 minutes before closing with a large group of friends might not always work out, anywhere you go. And sometimes corks are hard to remove, through no fault of the staff.

This is a top notch neighborhood place, and I'd hate to see its rep harmed by one disgruntled diner. (And the bread is dreamy.)

This place is ridiculous. Each time I have visited this establishment I have received snotty. The staff seems to be troubled by their patrons; I walked in for desert and champagne with a group of 6 friends. The host informed me that they were closed. When I pointed out that it was 5 till 11pm she rolled her eyes at me and had to consult a staff member. The entire time we sat at the bar the waitress gave us attitude and awful service. She couldnt even properly open a bottle of champagne. Upon leaving, we noticed that half the restaurant was still full and people were still finishing their dinner. I dont know how this place stays in business. You think that the management would do something about the repeated complaints regarding their unfriendly staff.

This place is where one with class, culure, and food/wine knowledge wants to eat. One of the huge problems with restaurants popping up in the city is they don't have style. Ambiance is the key ingredient first and foremost to enable the customer to be put in a place of comfort. This place: savvy hip art, clean decor, then comes the food which is incredible. Be sure to order plenty of first and second course dishes because those are where its at. Desserts will kill you over, of course ( just like tartine). Our waiter was very kind and on point with his job. well well done.

From the hustle and bustle of Valencia street at 17th, the Bar Tartine is a little oasis of tasty european food in a casual setting. The bread from the affiliated cafe is to die for. Baked hours ago. We dined on marrow with a fava bean salad. Good except that they could learn from La Suite how to serve the marrow with the accompanying salt. (crostini overpowered the marrow and was too hard to eat too). The Gem lettuce salad with creme fraiche was incredible. Short ribs melted in your mouth with a savory and creamy polenta. I've had better quail. All in all, a nice restaurant with some outstanding dishes in an informal setting. Another great addition to the neighborhood.

When I read some of these reviews, I was concerned re: portions, service & price. I've only been there once, but those critics are wrong. Our service was perfect and served in a fine time manner. I don't want to be fed 10 minutes after arrival. If I want that, I'll go to the taqueria. I want to linger, chat and enjoy it all. The portions were fine. The food was excellent, and yes I could have had more and therefore stuffed myself and overeaten, but I prefer to not eat that way. I'd rather have a delicious meal to savor than some massive plate of crap. We had the short ribs & risotto and enjoyed both thoroughly/. My only complaint is that the middle of the bread was too soft for me. Nice crust on it though. We didn't have time or space for dessert, so no comment there.

This was my first visit to Bar Tartine. The flavors and seasoning were right on, but the portions were too small. The braised lamb with lamb chops was good, but for $26, all you get is a small 1-2 oz of braised lamb and two chops with just a smothering portion of pureed potatoes. The hen was also good, but for nearly the same price, all you get is a tiny breast cut in four pieces. The skate was also good, but again the portion was below average. The wine list was adequate and a good value. The dessert menu was nice, but the presentation is thoroughly confusing. Bar Tartine is worth a try, but don't expect to go home full. I left feeling like I could eat again. The ambience is nice, but the booth seating against the wall is completely uncomfortable.

I've been to Bar Tartine for dinner twice and each time had an excellent meal and experience. The host was accomodating even though we did not have reservations on both nights (Sat's). If you're friendly and realize walking into a new restaurant at 7:30pm on a weekend is not the smartest, then be ready to wait, wherever you go. We only waited about 15 mins. Great bar for eating dinner and super helpful bartender/server with wine paring. Ambiance is cozy and warm. Reminds me of a NYC neighborhood bistro.

I really feel that this place is exactly whats needed in this taco dominated area of town. I walked in on a Friday night on an off chance that I could get a glass of wine at the bar, and the host was so nice he gave me a table because someone had cancelled at the last minute. The service was far above par, I had a lot of questions and nothing tripped her up. We didn't have any salad we skipped right from these amazing little balls of rissoto stuffed with goat cheese to this UNBELIEVABLE ravioli on a bed of tomato sauce and topped with creamy butter. It seemed like the portion was small but I was full before I could finish. We had sorbets like our waitress suggested because I was so full, a perfect sweet and light finish on a wonderful and unexpected evening!

Unfortunately, nor do the combinations put together in their lackluster but dictionary-busting menu. This place is obnoxious self-satisfied SF dining at its wannabe hipster worst. I have now gone twice, both times brought by others. The second try only went worse. Prissy staff and managers congratulate themselves on unimaginative dishes they describe with words you wont understand because theyre nonexistent. Good luck receiving what you actually order, or anything. They might simply forget you exist in both appetizer and main course rounds, as happened with my boyfriend's mom. Combined with a very mediocre wine list, inordinate prices, and an extremely underwhelming dessert selection (Did they just want to prove they were different from Tartine? I mean, by all accounts Im a dessert addict, and I couldn't even bring myself to order anything, twice!), this place gets two thumbs down, and if I had more hands, they'd get those too.

After reading the other three reviews about this place I thought it would be my new favorite resturant. Instead, I will never go back there again. The food was only average in taste, but expensive in price. There was no vegitarian meal option and the Salmon was overcooked and tasteless. The only part of my meal that was great was the desert, thank goodness. Next time, I will skip the long wait time and go somewhere else with better tasting, less overpriced food.

Traditonal bistro style layout given the narrow building. Interesting selection of appetizers - really enjoyed the grilled baby octopus and arancini (could of used a few more pieces in the serving). Our wait staff understood the menu quite well and was helpful. Main course selection was quite good - personally enjoyed the hearty lamb entry and matched it with a good Ridge wine. Looking around the placed was pretty much filled with younger diners, only a few of us over fifty, but the experience was quite good.

A restaurant more than just a wine bar, the menu is longer on appetizers, with 3 to 5 entrees, depending on the night, however they do seem to change frequently. The wine list is exceptionally well chosen with many choices in the $40 range. I found the seating not crowded at all, but very comfortable (if quite bustling). Standouts are the organic beef tenderloin with braised shortribs, frisee salad with wild mushrooms, grilled fresh sardines with salad and Tartine grilled bread, and desserts.
Highly recommended.

I loved the food the night we went. There was a spaghetti special with tuna that was so delicious. It should be on the menu everyday!!! Great wines and a wonderul dark space. Candles and so on. It is good now and can only get better. Hey Tartine, just make sure you keep really good service. Don't get pretentious. Take a lesson from Delfina. They have the best servers and take amazing care of their customers, and especially the regulars. Those regulars will keep you going for a very long tme!!

but 6 french fries for $6 is not so hot. the food was good but frankly, similiar to what you can get many other places for a better value. Service had quite a bit of attitude. Desserts were excellent, as was the bread. Wine list is nice and lots of well priced selections. Tables are insanely on top of one another, even by SF standards.
