I realize we all have different tastes and not everyone is going to like the same things, but I've gone here five plus times and the food is always excellent. I like it better than Sushi Groove, Ozumo, Mas Saki, etc. I love the spicy tuna. Most rolls that I have tried are excellent and are always fresh. Everyone I have taken here (friends from out of town) have liked it.

The reason it is not 5 stars is because the service can be slow at times and the waitresses don't always check on you that often. The bartender downstairs can be slow too. That has been pretty consistent with all the times that I've been there.

Overall, I think most people would like the food here. Those people complaining about small portions don't have a clue. Just as the review says it is izakaya cuisine so they serve in small portions.

It can be pricy on certain items so if you are looking for a cheaper dinner, this may not be the place for you. Good mix of folks from Mission hipsters to white collar workers. I hang out with both types so it suits me just fine.

Hope this helps.

Pros: Food, Food, Food....it's excellent. Good drinks and a great Whiskey selection

Cons: Service, Bartenders

I went to this restaurant because people gave it such great review, but it wasn't even that great nor was the food spectacular. I really wouldn't recommend this restaurant to anyone that is trying to dine somewhere nice with friends or spouses. But they do have a huge whiskey menu if that's what your into.

The service leaves room for improvement, although knowledgeable but hardly attentive server was able to answer all our questions she was not seen by us after the food started arriving. The food runners were in disarray; they have chosen to bring dishes out one by one, which is counterproductive and considering that the kitchen is on the first flour could be tiresome.
The dishes are extremely delicate: toro carpacio with hints of truffle oil and lemon melts away on your tongue even deep fried tempura of shitaki mushrooms stuffed with hamachi is amazingly airy. Traditional rolls are accented with spicy jalapeno aioli, which too overpowering.

I did not enjoy my experience here. The bartender barely spoke any English, poured me the wrong drink, refused to take it back, rude and not friendly at all.

The place was too loud to have any conversation and the service at the tables were slow.

It's sleek and trendy but not a fun place to go. There are plenty of other swanky places to see and be seen.

This is a well run venue. It is a must see for anyone curious to know what a specialty whisky venue looks like. Over 250 whiskies... What a selection. I enjoyed the setting which is sophisticated, classy, not over bearing. Service was good, food excellent both on the cooked items and the raw sachimi...

I was impressed with thier generous whiky pour of 2oz. Most places pour 1 1/2 ozs and even though pricing looks expensive I think not realy. I'm a whisky lover and whisky is expensive unless its Jack or Jim beam or cutty sark what you drink.

When you go ask to be seated upstaires.. I liked it m ore than the bottom floor. You can actually see the whole operation. Good spot that is here to stay...

Ive been to Nihon few times that I must admit by now that I know few of the servers & the manger.
I told some of my coworkers to visit with me and was surprised that one told me that they got some "not so good" reviews here. Being surprised, I read them & I thought I should add my 2 cents even though I never write reviews since I disagree with most.
Most people complaints are due to them simply being cheap. Many people likes to hang out & go to great places but they are either cheap or dont have the money to party. It is a fact that Nihon is not cheap "drink wise' but I cant remmebr where you can get a cocktail now for less than $10 and thats what you seem to pay at Nihon, even though I always bought bottles there. The food is darn fresh "sachimi" I know as unlike most, I can afford to eat out & I know whats good & whats fresh.
I must advise those who budget to hang around few of the cheap mission bars and simply leave Nihon to people like us. People like us I mean are those who work hard, make good money & wants to hang in places with excllent service, they know you by name & take care of you. Plaese stay away if you cannot afford it.

Unlike many lounges in the city Nihon seems to have done it correct. Its design is faboulous similar to many hot spots in London or New York and even though the space is not large they manged to take adavantage of every small part in it. Now their whisky list is for ceratin the lragest in any place Ive seen. Check the cabinet next to bar.. bottles that are 40 or 50 year olds.. waoo.. I was very happy with service and couple of appetizers i tried. I will be back.

I took my boyfriend for a romantic dinner. The reviews are mixed, but wanted to give it a chance. That was a huge mistake, but we made the best of it. The cuisine was lousy and they own another sushi location. Management needs to work with the kitchen crew to improve dramatically. The prices are way over priced for both the cuisine and cocktails. The place isn't one of the high demand sushi lounges, in the city. We're better off with places like Tokyo Go-Go, Blowfish, or even Deep Sushi. The ambiance isn't bad, but its not great either. I'm confused by some of the reviews. I'm betting that its coming from the owner, friends and staff members. I don't reccomend this establishment for the bar, ambiance, location and food quality. If so, please post your review and let everyone else know.

I've never written a review before but last night has inspired me. I took my boyfriend to Nihon for his birthday as he LOVES whiskey and Japanese food. We had amazing whiskeys and my champagne cocktail was nice. The service was slow but very friendly. Here is the thing, our food was tasteless and poorly constructed. Upon contact, every single roll we ordered FELL APART. Not only that, it had no flavor. And considering our strong drinks, we needed something of equal strength to match. The food is overpriced, the drinks were insanely overpriced. I will never go back. Not only this, I will tell everyone I know not to go.***When we got home I made myself a piece of toast***

Pros: For Rich Whiskey Lovers

Cons: Terrible Food

I'm taken by this place in terms of atmosphere, whiskey selection & service. Staff are very good and barkeeper was willing to taste me on some of the whiskies which is unheard of in bars.
This place is not for the avearge people who like to budget when they go out & from the bad notes I read on few past reviews, I noticed that spending was often time what bothered them! many dive bars are the answer to that & I would not agree that service is bad.. are you kidding me ? maybe bad if you were a smart A & fell on your head drunk boys ? check it out it is an owsome place... Food is excellent & sachimi is very fresh.. they seem to know their stuff

this place is all show and nothing to back it up. sure they got every whiskey / scotch in the world but why would you pay for it? and why be treated like dirt by the barkeep and waitresses??? do yourself a favor and spend your money somewhere else.

The service here is terrible. If you plan on going there for a party, do not book the room. Not realizing that this place is half empty on a Sat. night, I booked a room which was completely un-necessary and overpriced. The manager was not upfront about bottle pricing (certain bottles count towards the minimum, whle others do not) and the waitress was terrible. I had people waiting over 30 minutes for her to bring in the initial drinks. She was so slow, they started going downstairs to the bar to buy their own drinks. Not to mention, the bar forced me to buy an extra bottle due to the shady pricing.

We visited Nihon early on a Saturday night. The seats in the bar weren't full, which was a nice surprise. The drink menu was interesting with some twists on favorites like mojitos with sake. For being a whiskey bar, they were all out of Makers Mark. I'd think there would be better planning. The bartender was really really slow. He took his sweet time and the drinks were good but everyone was waiting a long time to order and settle their tabs. The inside is very inviting and warm and I love the couches and low tables. I wonder if anyone has ordered the $160,000 bottle of whiskey on the menu?

It was too good to go undiscovered, so you actually do need a reservation here now... but it is definitely worth the trouble. Creative food, very fresh, great bartenders (drinks were spot-on all night), and cool ambiance. The crowd's pretty hip, but most seem to be there with friends and not just cruising the pick-up scene... it actually makes a big difference in the vibe. 6 drinks, 5 or 6 plates of food - around $100. For the quality we got, it was definitely worth it.

This place was great.... good service (cute to boot) good food.... great selection of scotch, whiskey, sake...... they even offer liquor locker service for those bottles on the menu pricing up to $1500! :)
I highly reccomend it for a date, birthday or business dinner.

Pros: Whiskey whiskey whiskey

Cons: weird location

The person who decided to join a fantastic whiskey list with sushi is a genius.

The whiskey list is thorough, with selections from Japan as well. The staff is knowledgeable on the offerings.

The sushi is non-traditional with some of the more Americanized rolls being the best. Try their version of a spider roll and the hamburger roll (not as pedestrian as it sounds).

The atmosphere is relaxing and the service is attentive, but not hovering.

My wife and i recently went to Nihon for our anniversary and we were treated impeccably from start-to-finish. I kicked things off with an exotic version of a whiskey sour with Suntory whiskey, green tea liqore and pineapple. It was quite tasty. The food was flawless. I highly recommend the fried crab roll and the 25 piece omakase. One of the featured fishes that night was Escolar and it was memorable. I've been to Blowfish and Sushi Groove on numerous occasions and Nihon is their equal and then some.

Tables are close together, so be prepared to a shared ambient dining experience with your neighbors.

Our server was delightful and gave us champagne on the house at the end of our meal.

My wife & I found this place by accident after dinner at Chez Spencer. We sat at the bar and did not eat so I cant comment on food. Design of the place is remarkable and rivals the top bars of London or New York. The crowd was very classy, sophisticated and the scene seemed busy but not crazy crowded were it was not comfortable. The barman that served us was probably one of the top best in this city. He was either european or spanish and he smiled all the time, talked calmly, chatted us about whiskey and amazingly got my wife to try a Japanese whiskey that she liked 'she does not drink whiskey.' He asked us to come back for the food and we will take him on his offer.

I have lived in NYC, Honolulu and SF. I know one of the world's greatest experts on scotch whiskey--he helped create the bar. WOW. The ambiance is total Mission "now," the whiskey selection is incredible, the food is some of the best Japanese I've ever had. This place rocks and will not stay hidden long. A little out of the way, but I think it adds to the allure. I live in the Mission. Young crowd, too!

We simply had a great time. Our waitress was very informative about both the food and surprisingly their whiskey selection. Even though I dont drink whiskey she sugested for me the apple mack and now I'm hooked ..excellent whiskey cocktail
The food was amazing. We tried the toro sashimi as well as the hamachi and both were extremly fresh. The black ahi was a great dish as well as the so unusaual nihon burger even though it did not look like a burger.. we loved it. nihon even though it seems for the first while when you enter as a sophisticated bar but it is an excellent restuarant

I absolutely loved this place. The first thing that struck me about this resturant was how diffrent its atmosphere is from outside, very unexpected. The restaurant downstaires area is lit in an orange yellow glow from the bar. The floor is white and unusual, yet a bit cold I would think in comparison to the upstaires dining area that I fell in love with. I walked in and was politely greeted by the hostess, who promptly asked to assist me with a table and upon sitting down asked if she should hang my coat for me. Things like this always win points with me! Then there's the food. Combination of sushi & cooked items. The sushi tasted very fresh and good and the lamb robata was excellent, chicken wings were very juicy but oily. Ahhh they had a nice bar that seemed to carry lots of whiskies ... great place

I was here last Thursday with few friends. Excellent service and excellent rolls and seriously fresh sushi. The "Yamato" and "Samuri" rolls are just amazing. You must get them.
I had no idea that so many people buy bottles there. While there I saw the staff take about four new bottles to the people in the bottle room. This place seems to sell nothing but whisky, check their bottle room and locker and see how many bottles stored there.
The place is not cheap but you actually pay for what you get & I think this place is one of those places that caters to the more affluent customers ! I like it though

After hearing the buzz I was very excited to eat at Nihon. Unfortunately the food was not good at all...too much sauce on everything: sushi coated in mayonaise and sweet and sour sauce...yuck. The only things that were palatable were the rolls and those were so expensive it was ridiculous. Service was marginal too.

All in all a great place to go and have a drink, the lounge is very cool, but DO NOT waste your money on the food!

I went there after hearing a lot about it and thought it would not meet my expextations... How wrong I was.

I should say I did not eat upstaires as we did not have a `resrevation so we settled at three bar stools at the bar. Both the service we got and the food served to us were excellent. The bar keeper kept recommendations coming and we must have tried three or four diffrent whiskies each ' what a selection they have' the music was mellow jaz and felt perfect for the atmosphere. that white floor !! intresting. i recommend nihon for both food & drink.

As a foodie who grew up in Japan, I was excited to read the words "izakaya-style cusine with a twist". In my mind, I thought wow, someone is finally putting together a true-modern, tokyo-style, izakaya style bar/ resturant. But man was I dissapointed. Their menu is the same old modern Japanese stuff that you could find anywhere, and what they mean by izakaya-style is that the portions are small. Their menu is so uninventive that I'm a little offended that they would use the name "nihon". I know this is not japan but I'm getting tired of Japanese food=sushi/sahimi equation here. Their warm plates were not memorable either. But, on the bright side, the ambience rocks, as does their whisky selection. Suntory whiskey! I would go for drinks, but don't try to eat there if you are really hungry. It would take many plates to get any satisfaction.

This place is to be avoided. We sent back 3 dishes-- the tuna poke tasted putrid and fishy, the rolls were sub-par, the lamb skewers were fatty and sinewy. And to top it off it was waaaay overpriced. The edamame was ok, but come on, steamed beans can't be too difficult... Avoid this establishment.

Pros: Nice bar area

Cons: Uncomfortable seats, BAD SUSHI, Overpriced

.

What a place. the whisky list is like no other I have ever seen. you walk in the door and all you see is whisky. Although they have everything else I would not recommend drinking anything but the brown stuff.
Service is excellent, very friendly, informative and sincere. We ordered few apetizers at the bar and my god, their hamachi stuffed shitake' is to die for. this place rocks.. we stayed there no less than three hours and it was a party...
On my first visit, they manged to make a regular out of me. I simply hope it does not get overly exposed..

I was so excited about this place. The atmosphere is so cool. BUT the service is poor no matter how cool, nothing beats service. Which this place completely lacks! The manager has a poor attitude and lacks maturity.

San Francisco has few places where grown ups can enjoy with a sense of youthfulness in them at the same time. Nihon I found is one.
We were having dinner next door at Chez Spencer on Monday when afterwards we decided to check out Nihon after hearing about its whiskey selection. We were very surprised by everything. The music was jazz, played mellow in a gourgous setting. The service was very proffessional yet light hearted. The guy bartender was excellent. He spoke a little, knew how to recommend whiskey for my wife and kept our water glasses full. He spoke when spoken to only and although the bar was not busy at all he nevr looked bored and seemed busy all the time which is nice for a change. I felt the place was mature.
This is my first review ever on city search. This place is worth while visiting.

The place is absolutely remarkable, delicious and a first of its kind although there few who are trying to get this concept passed but nevr perfected like this.
If you pay attention to detail, you will notice that everything seems to have been built to suit the place, from furniture to bar to exposed brick etc.. etc...
the food was delicious, the menu is original to the true izakaya style food although with a twist that i liked. The sachimi was like nothing i've had before. The true star has to be the whiskey selection which takes over most of the place and to my surprsie most seemed to be having whiskey. this placed is defientaly for the big boys.

Pros: Design, atmosphere, sachimi & whiskey

Cons: small bar

The value for the food is really not good. It shouldn't be rated two $$ because while the prices seem average the quantity of food you get is tiny...
Also, be sure to not only make a reservation, but to also confirm it.
All it all, this place just wasn't worth the effort and money.

I have been to few office parties with the company I work for, but nothing compaired to what we had at Nihon. We had the whole top floor to ourselfes. Service was extremly accomadating & proffesional, even though we kept asking for more & more things that were not on our previous agreement. The place was beautifull, food remarkable with excellent sushi & remarkable cooked dishes 'Izakaya ?'. Lots of us just found out our new japanese hang out place.
Simply great experince from the top down & thank you guys for sush a remarkable holiday event that was better than any other event we had in the past. Great bar I may add...

My first time there and we got what we did not expect; A party although we planned a simple dinner. When we arrived the place was not full, however in a matter of an hour or so all tables were full, music somehow got louder and the energy just shot through the roof. I noticed other tables including ours drank a lot, whiskey and everything else. Service was proffesional, friendly & courteous. The food if you understand tradional Japanese was excellent. For those of you who think you know Japanese they had quiet a bit of modern day style sushi which we tried and it was also great.
We had a japanese whiskey although the year we requested was out"they explained it was suppliers fault due to high demand'
All in all this place rocks and I hope it does not get overlly discovered.

Pros: atmopshere, Service, Food

The food was OK, but not spectacular. The kobe beef was pretty good, the sushi was just OK. The service was pretty poor. It took FOREVER to get our drinks and order in (and it wasn't that busy -- our waitress was too busy gossiping with her coworkers), then when I asked if one roll was vegetarian, the waitress said yes, but it arrived w/ fish eggs in it. At least she was nice about having it remade. The music is so damn loud it's near impossible to have a conversation. I'd recommend coming here for a cocktail, not much else. Also, was not impressed with the paltry variety of Japanese single malts. I thought there would be more than just a handful, considering the long list of whiskeys.

nihon seems to work on doing what no other japanese resturant has done in the city in creativity and presentation. Dishes we loved were the hamachi stuffed shitake', the japanese wings that were unusually juicy & good, but you must be willing to use your hands to realy enjoy. I tried sushi like the 1974 roll which was extremly refreshing and tasty. what topped it all was the Toro which I never had before this good.
Service was very genuine and friendly. they came across as very welcoming. the setting I belive is a first for this city... it is swanky, hip, and retro... I dont drink whiskey so I did not try it however the list seemed very large.
I will go back again.. thank you for a good night

I have to admit that I was really looking forward to trying this place out. The reservation for 22 was confirmed with Nihon until they called back a day later and told me that somebody had made a mistake and that they were already booked. That being said I think the service/managment could stand to be a little better. Sorry to say that I can't rate the lounge, food, ambience or value.

Superb food, friendly hip service, great interior design, a few decent wines. EXCELLENT dishes: uni on the spoon, toro tartare with avocado, shitake stuffed with hamachi, scallop sashimi. Good dishes: fried chicken wings, kumamotos with various roes. Average dishes: kobe tataki, octopus.
I also enjoy its sister restaurant Tsunami on Divisadero, but Nihon focuses on innovative fresh fish dishes with lots of embellishments as opposed to plain sushi.
I can't wait to go back; next time I will try the kobe cheeseburger.

waoo... I could not belive how nice it is. Although it is on island by itself, I think that could be part of the charm. the design is remarkable with lots of attention to detail. We went for drinks, did not try the food so I cant testify to that. However, the bar is fin with incredibly large selection of whiskies & they pour them stiff... their drinks are great especially that apple mack or esquire as my gf said. DJ music was good and over all Im sure to be back.

I went there tonight with my boyfriend and we had a fun night. We didn't make any reservation, but the receptionist tried hard to give us a table. I recognised the bartender was actually from Betelnut on Fillmore......He is a great bartender with a nice twist of knowing what he is doing. Great food here, too. We love the fusion idea of all their resturants. We will try Tsunami next time!!!

Design is unlike any other place in the city.. Music was fun & service friendly & efficent. I have to grow to like whiskey enough to get my bottle there, which I guess soon... thanks boys & girls

I cant belive I did not think of this idea before... A whiskey bar in the city... I loved it.
The food was superb. You have to try their Japanese wings yummy... The coke kobe melted in our mouths & I cant belive how big the thunder bird role was. Our whiskey surprisingly complimented our food to a degree I did not think it would...
Service was extremly friendly although they seemed running around all the time.. they are simply good & do make an effort. Ohhh Im sorry nihon we stayed too long on our tables which I guess upseted some guests after us... we simply had a great time & did not want to leave.

San Francisco is changing... I was very impressed the second I walked in the door. The design & atmosphere is very relaxing. Music was nice & not overbearing. We sat downstaires since we did not have reservations, which I guess is recommended in this place. I was surprised to even find out that the bottle room was all booked.. We sat downstaires & the tables I must say were small, but afterall they were cocktail tables. Service was nice and they were making an effort to please... Food was good but came a bit slow due possibly the place being very busy.
Now the whiskey concept is a hit and many whiskies to choose from... whiskey gets better the more you drink of it... thumbs up for this place

Intresting concept. Seeing it made me think how come no one has done this before.. A whiskey bar in SF. This place is done with care & it feels New York which I like.
We went there on the weekend and it was busy that we could not get a table in the main dinning area. I was surprised to even find out that the bottle room was also booked through out the whole night. We settled for a table in the bar area & ordered some few diffrent whiskies. Obviously whiskey starts to taste better & better the more you have of it, so I'll say the whiskey was awsome... Food was good but I must say it came late... they were apologetic but I guess we were eating in the bar area anyhows.. I will go back again but reservation on weekends makes more sence.

Although I was highly ancipating checking out Nihon, it was not only a major disappointment, but the piled high attitude was something not typical a SF dining experience.. Due to traffic mishaps my party of 4 found ourselves running late, and although notified the restaurant in route, were still refused a table when we arrived 15 minutes late. Not only was our table refused (although there were three empty tables in the upstairs dining room the entire time we were there), but we were banished to the lounge although happily told we could 'have' a lounge area as long as we liked. Gee thanks. For anyone who has attempted to eat full course entrees on their lap or hunched over an ottoman, you'll appreciate how uncomfortable our dining experience was. Futhermore, the service was not only slow, but sloppy. The food was medicore at best, and overly salty in general.

I went to NIHON with my boyfriend and three other people this thursday. We however could not get a seat, but they recommended for us their private"bottle room" with the requirement to buy a spirits bottle and ofcoarse the boys chose whiskey.
The room was magnificant. We felt we were in some kind of undergorund new york club. My boyfriend said the whisky bottles were priced very resonable, i think it was $150. We were told if we did not finish our whiskey that they would store it for us in their locker for our next visit.
We tried few things on the menu since we were actually full. The food we tried was very good but to judge it fairly 'I think' we have to go back for a full dinner. The place is a winner... That private room is our hang out every weekend now..

Who new that I would actually find sushi & whisky compatible, but they were. That is not to say that all we had was sushi since it is only a part of what was offered..
We were part of a group of 8 that all seemed to love the food. Portions are good size" not big though" but acceptable. The food was not on the cheap size but I felt the atmosphere, design, great service and quality of all that was brought before us made the prices very reasonable.
The place had an extremly warm feel to it with mellow loungy music. I only hope it does not get discovered by bar hoppers & simply destroy it.
If you go, you must try Goma Ae which complimented my Coal Ila 18 year old whisky ver much...
