Nook is more than your typical cafe shop, we are a cafe plus in San Francisco. We offer a variety of breakfast items such as Belgian waffles, fruit salad, granola, bagel sandwiches and fresh baked pastries. For lunch and dinner, we're serving more healthy food like fresh made salads, hot and cold sandwiches, small plates like hummus with warm pita bread, caprese and more. While we think simple is special, Nook offers coffee drinks, cold beverages and a variety of beer, good wines and sake cocktails for a casual evening out. Enjoy happy hour everyday, from 5 to 7pm. Nook provides a variety of options for fresh and healthy food for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We combine the factors of a cafe and restaurant at our Russian Hill/Nob Hill location to create a lounge atmosphere in the evening. At Nook, there is something for everyone at any time, everyday.

Editorial by Citysearch

In Short
This Russian Hill meeting spot offers light cafe fare with simple, satisfying California ingredients for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Small plates include gourmet cheeses with fig spread and walnut bread, as well as sandwiches, organic salads and daily soups such as spinach basmati. Coffee choices abound, but the real treats are the beer, wine and cocktails, including sake and soju concoctions, mimosas, and more temptations.

Key Points

  • San Francisco Coffee Shop
  • Healthy & Flavorful Foods
  • Wine, Beer and Cocktail Lounge

The Inside Scoop

  1. The Extras - Pick up a drink card and your 10th beverage is free.
  2. Know Before You Go - Like its name implies, Nook's small interior is best for two- and three-person groups. Sidewalk tables offer more space --but expect regular rumbles from passing cable cars.
  3. What to Drink - Be sure to ask for the wine list, an Italian-heavy array of Proseco, whites, reds and even dessert options.
  4. Parking - Short-term street parking is available in front of their garage on Hyde Street.

Great place

by Laura M. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 355

This versatile cafe is a great place for a cup of coffee during the day or sake bombs at night. They offer healthier food at the $7-8 range. The staff is friendly-I recommend

great coffee shop

by marrkoss

Nook is the kind of place that you are scared will one day disappear as the encroaching virus of big-business coffee eats further and further away at the core of america. Ok maybe that is a bit overstated, but seriously Nook is very charming. The waitstaff is a motley bunch but very friendly. The coffee and food are above average, but the ambience exudes 90's beatnik appeal.

Pros: cute, nice neighborhood

Super cute coffee shop

by annamalsf

Crowded on the weekends, but if you can grab a table the food and ambiance are worth it. The apple and walnut salad is amazing!!

Pros: ambiance and coffee

Cons: a bit of a wait, a little pricey

Feel at home at the corner!

by felicitas

Nook is a very cosy and friendly place with great food and drinks. the coffee is perfect and i really LOVE the bagels especially the smoked salmon. i like to be there in the morning sitting at a window table or outside in the sun. at night there is a great ambience with candles on the table - just right to meet a friend for a glass of wine or a sake cocktail. go there and enjoy!

Pros: Friendly service no matter how busy! Fresh food! Great roasted bagels!

Perfect Overall

by danpetroski

Couldn't ask for a better place to have a Saturday/Sunday brunch or a glass of wine after work. The food is super, the service is fantastic and the atmosphere is perfect for gathering with friends at small tables or enjoying a coffee and newspaper by yourself.

Pros: The trolley cars passing outside the window.

Not just the Java

by kwahlstrom

Best place to grab a bowl of oatmeal in the morning and a wonderful glass of wine in the eve. Too bad it's not "just around the corner" for me.

So cute!

by shoegal84

I'm so glad I have a place like this a hop skip and a jump away from me. I love the atmosphere the food, and the people. The only bad thing about it is that it can get crowded on the weekends!

They have delicious cafe mochas, and sandwiches. Oh and their olive tapenade and hummus platter served with warm pita bread is yummy! You can pick something up, sit and eat while playing on your computer or reading, or bring someone in to join you in cheering at the passing cable cars while you sit outside.

The people who work here are so nice too!

Pros: Italian sodas, sandwiches, and coffees!

Cons: Can get way crowded on weekends.

delicious, but not friendly

by emmablake

I went in to Nook because I live nearby and I read the reviews here. Although I enjoyed my Au Lait and fancy bagel for almost $10 (yikes), I found the service to be unfriendly, and I felt like I was bothering the Barista. C'mon, if you don't like your job, at least "act" like you do. I was treating myself to spend so much, and it was good, but good customer service is very important. I will go back in the evening to try again, based on the reviews here.

Pros: food, coffee, atmosphere

Cons: unfriendly barista, expensive

Great for breakfast

by tanni

I think Nook can definitely be called a breakfast place. They might not be the typical amarican breakfast joint but they do have a decent selection like waffles, oatmeal, granola as well as bagel sandwiches like scrambled eggs on a bagel, the most amazing salmon bagel and more. (Check out their web page...)
Their quiches are organic and excellent quality so I doubt they come from costco. I thinks it's a great combination of a day and night spot. Check it out any time, you will love it!

Pros: fun wines, fresh bread, great coffee

Cons: no omlettes etc.

Not really a breakfast place

by jimstoic

I visited Nook because it Citysearch listed it as a breakfast place. If you don't want pastries, Nook is not a breakfast place. There are no egg dishes, for instance. Or there was one egg dish: a quiche, which my friend and I had. It was delicious, but it came out of a box and may have been from Costco. The coffee was spectacular.

Pros: coffee, quick

Cons: no kitchen

wine and beer, with great food as well

by cblair1

I've been for lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch. All the items on the menu were great. The artichoke bottoms filled with baked goat cheese wrapped in prosciutto are awesome. The funky cocktails are great there. Very delicious. For lunch try one of the ciabatta sandwiches. Big and very tasty. A great spot all around.

Pros: great value, location, ambiance

Cons: busy weekends, closes at 11pm

Great place for a quick bite

by jcapobia

I have now been to nook for both breakfast and dinner. Breakfast was good. There isnt a lot of choice, but what they have is tasty. I went there the other night and it was a great place for a few small dishes. We grabbed a few glasses of wine and some small plates and it was fabulous. I will definitely make it back!

I want more!

by vickeh

My first impression was, FINALLY this neighborhood has a cafe that I can get great coffee at! Not to mention that everything is either Vegan or Organic (they still have meat) ... but don't let that scare you away every dish is amazing. Nook has great music, a relaxing atmospere, don't be surprised if the owners stop by your table to ask you how your meal was. This is definately a place to check out not only the weekend but during the week too! And I would say its a great place to bring those visiting friends because the cable car stops right out front. Need I say more?

Pros: Great food, Inexpensive, Great wine

Cons: Parking, Can get crowded

Welcome Welcome Welcome

by sfrow123

Nook has already become my "go to" spot for grabing a quick bite (can't go wrong with any hot sandwich) or just hanging out with a cup of coffee and reading the paper. They have hi-fi, wi-fi. I've been there once at night and had a fun time talking and meeting neighbors while having a couple glasses of wine. Nook turns into a loungy, pseudo wine bar at night. This is a welcome addition to Russian Hill. Love the place.

My new favorite spot!

by jannic

This cute little corner place just opened and I am already a regular. It is the perfect combination of a cozy corner cafe in the morning with the best coffee I've had in a while and a fun night place for good wines, cocktails and amazing food (salads, sandwiches, small plates and more) for reasonable prices. The atmosphere is very inviting and warm. A great addition to the neigborhood. I love it!

Pros: lots of light, friendly service, outdoor seating

Cons: tough parking
