A Brief History of Fencing When watching the unexpected American Gold Medal victory in Women's Sabre at the 2004 Olympic games, I was struck by a sense of the fencing history behind the high-tech images of flashing blades, electronic scoring and lighted, polycarbonate masks. My own participation as a recreational Foilist, and my son's as a competitive sabre fencer has led me to find out a little more about the low-tech past of this high-tech sport. Fencing history is more complex than it might seem. For example, fencing, both for fun and as military training has been recorded in history as far back as the high Egyptian civilizations.
