A Brief History of Fencing When watching the unexpected American Gold Medal victory in Women's Sabre at the 2004 Olympic games, I was struck by a sense of the fencing history behind the high-tech images of flashing blades, electronic scoring and lighted, polycarbonate masks. My own participation as a recreational Foilist, and my son's as a competitive sabre fencer has led me to find out a little more about the low-tech past of this high-tech sport.
