In 1995 Ly & her family opened the first Indochine Restaurant in Federal Way. Many years and two more locations later, the tradition of tantalizing food and relaxing atmosphere continue. Opened in 2005 this restaurant is almost like a work of art. From the high cielings and dark woods along with beautiful drapery, to the brushed aluminum & brick, this is an amazing setting. The flavors of Thailand, India, Japan & France are all combined here along with a fine selection of wine and bar beverages to complete a most memorable experience. Feel free to call for reservations for two or a your next large party.

In Short
This long, candle-lit space exudes worldly exoticism with its dramatic decor of gleaming cherry wood tables and sleek black leather chairs. Many tables in the dining room are set around a gurgling U-shaped fountain; diners can also opt to eat in semiprivate booths or large round tables surrounded by shimmering orange curtains. The menu focuses on Southeast Asian cuisine with fusion accents, like shrimp tossed with a Thai basil pesto and served over soba noodles.

Key Points

  • Great Happy Hour in Lounge
  • Ideal for Large Groups
  • Trendy Weekend Nightlife Scene

The Inside Scoop

  1. What to Drink - The back bar has a long list of Asian-inspired specialty drinks, like a martini made with Chai tea.
  2. The Extras - There's a takeout gelato counter in front open during the summer, offering flavors like lychee, coconut and peanut.

I almost always order Pad Thai when I go to a restaurant like this, and this place had the best in Tacoma. The restaurant is elegant in style and has a very professional staff! Try it out if you ever get a chance to go downtown!

The best

by Debbie O. | insider Insider | Rank: 12,886

Indochine has the best Thai food -- our daughters first introduction to this (as picky eaters) and they soon had it on their phone speed dial! Whenever we don't know where to go, we end up at Indochine.

Service goes the extra mile

by AmberS

The service at Indochine made such a great impression on me. There is always someone to greet you at the door and we are always promptly seated.

I had laryngitis when my boyfriend and I first dined here, and when I mouthed to the server that I lost my voice, she recommended I stay away from the ice water and drink some hot lemon tea with honey, which she promptly brought to the table. I was amazed at how friendly and attentive she was to how I was feeling.

When my boyfriend started to order, she recommended dishes that we could share, and her suggestions were perfect. The food was delicious!

This is definitely one of my favorite restaurants, as it always provides great atmosphere and service.

Pros: Great service

Cons: None!

Great Restaurant to impress

by AlanC

I have personally been to Indochine many times after got hooked on my initial visit. The first thing you will notice is unmistakable d?cor that oozes Asian influence. From the Thai dancer statues to Chinese bamboo umbrellas, they all tastefully decorated. Workers are all professionally dressed. It is almost like in a 5 start hotel. The design and layout of the restaurant is very unique. The water features are strategically placed to create a peaceful dining experience.

There are just multitudes of cuisines to choose from. From mouth watering Beef Rendang to refreshing Thai ice tea for the guests selection. They also provide different heat/spiciness level for those who enjoy a little more “kick” in their food. The cuisines are sort of fusion but yet very authentically traditional. They are all fresh and scrumptious. I have not had anything that is even remotely just Ok. They are all excellent.

Here are my ratings:
Food: Excellent. Many varieties and very satisfying
Service: Professional and prompt
Speed: Prompt. I don’t have to wait more than a few minutes to get what I need. My glass or water always full.
Price: A bit pricy. But worth it unless you eat there every day. Won’t leave less than $20 per person (with Tax and tips)
Ambiance: Good for any celebrations. Dining for 2 to company gathering are all suitable.

Pros: Everything is excellent

Cons: Tat pricy

Pretty good food, but..

by rich4goodfood

Way overpriced for average to tasty Thai food. The manager is also difficult to speak to and seemed to not care about a complant. Overall, this is another example of a style over substance place in which service takes a backseat.

Pros: Location, nice trendy interior

Cons: Way overpriced, poor service and costomer service.

I LOVE INDOCHINE

by letsgoweiser

Indochine is truly a delightful destination where the ambiance and food is out of this world! The Honey Walnut Prawns are my personal favorite, and if you haven't tryed the Fresh Spring Rolls, you're missing out. A MUST are thier home made Gelato in about a dozen flavors, and the Cheese Cakes are incredible. Get ready for one of the finest dining experiences in the Pacific Northwest at casual prices!

Pros: Parking up 21st and on Pacific

Cons: Not enough seating for all who want to dine there...worth a wait!

overall great place! (food, decor, service)

by gakester8

i chose to go here because someone personally referred me and the reviews on here seemed positive. We started off with their wontons - crab rangoon version w/real dungenous crab...it was pretty good. I had the honey walnut prawns (one of my favorite Chinese dishes) and they were good. They had leechees along with the pineapple chunks, which i had never had before. Instead of being served w/rice it was served on a bed of fried sweet potato sticks. The potatoes had a little too much batter on them for me, but my husband liked them. My husband had something called Black Sea (I think that is the name) and it had lots of fresh seafood (scallions, clams, shrimp, squid) served in sauce on black rice. It was very good. The portions are large and are served family style to share. For dessert I had their peanut butter gelato and it was AMAZING!! It truly does taste just like peanut butter cookie dough. Its a good thing I don't live in Tacoma or I might end up eating their daily! They also had other falvors like espresso, blueberry, chocolate, etc... We went to eat at 3:00, an off hour, but there were other groups of people there. They refilled our drinks often and our served was served very quickly. They also have a few different "rooms" for small groups/parties. The only negative thing I have to say (and the reason I didn't give 5 stars) is that I made a reservation, with a person, for 5:30pm on Tuesday at 11:00pm on Monday. Someone called me to confirm my reservation Tuesday morning and left a voicemail asking me to call them back. When I called them back, they just said "ok" They said everything was okay, but it just seemed odd and like there was a lack of communication on their side.

Pros: food, service, location (by musuems, UW), peanut butter gelato - everything!

Cons: strange reservation confirming, must pay to park

Epitome of Thai Fusion...and so much more.

by shua586

I love this place. I have heard people complain about the service on occasion but this is
almost always on account of lack of reservations. On a Friday or Saturday, don't expect
to get a spot without waiting at least half an hour if you just walk in. That being said,
it is well worth it to book a spot. Also, if you don't have any back problems, request a
pond table. This will seat you on along a pond and fountain outlined with gorgeous wood tables
and benches.

And the food. Wow. I go here often and my two favorite dishes are the honey glazed walnut
prawns and the Caribbean mango chicken. These may not be authentic Thai but it is some of
the most interesting and delicious food I have ever tasted. Even the staple Phad Thai is
incredible. And if you want something a little more exotic go for the Yin Yang Ahi (assuming you don't mind a little raw fish)
The desserts are also out of this world from a flour-less chocolate cake to
creme brulee to 12 different exotic (and normal) flavors of gelato. Since I eat here so
often I've gotten to know the owners and Ly is a NUT about all natural/no additives. This
carries from the food to the desserts which are all made in house.

Finally I have to say something about the wine list. Russel, the other owner is as crazy
about his wines as Ly is about the food. It's surprising that this is one of THE most
extensive wine lists in all of Tacoma - more so than El Gaucho.

If you're looking for an awesome dining experience, check out Indochine.

Pros: Food, Wine, Ambience

Not Strictly Chinese Cuisine

by flea4193

I was searching for a chinese restaurant, so I was a bit disappointed to find out that they only had six asian entrees on the menu. The cuisine has more of a Thai influence and my boyfriend is alergic to some Thai spices. Besides that issue, we ordered the potstickers. For $9 you get six large potstickers with a great sesame ginger dipping sauce. Very good. I had the mongolian beef which was excellent. My boyfriend had the Phad Thai Chicken which came on a huge mound of noodles. For dessert he had the peanut butter ice cream which tasted exactly like peanut butter cookie dough. I had the creme brulee which was very rich, this could had very well been a shared dessert. The service was a little slow, but once we ordered the food came out immediately. I had booked a reservation fro 5:30 p.m. considering it was a Friday night, which didn't seem that necissary. There were some guests dressed in casual attire, and there is a neat hut with floor seating for a larger group of people. They have quite a few salad and seafood dishes available. There were too fully stocked bars and they also served mochas/lattes and green or jasmine tea. The wine list was extensive. Hearty beers on tap. The decore was subtle yet entertaining, and for the most part comfortable. The table for two was a little small. I will definately return, however, it won't be for chinese food.

Pros: Ambience, Food, Prices

Cons: Not strictly Chinese food

Seattle style in downtown Tacoma...

by munny76

So the other night was the second time I've been here. I was on a date and while the date wasn't so fab, the food, drinks and service were! Wes the bartender was on top of it with food suggestions as well as making a mean Mojito. YES! In the middle of winter an amazing mojito! So worth the drive for me from South Seattle area!

Pros: Decor, Atmosphere, Food, All Over Experience

Cons: ????
