Best Mexican in SF 5 Star Rating - World class

This place is unbelievable! It's a great spot if you're looking for a fun dining experience....great for groups, out of towners, or dinner with a friend. Get there early, and it's an excellent spot to take the kids. The food is incredible, best guacamole in town. And the margaritas are out of this world, fresh squeezed lime juice...no mixers. They're insane, and I don't even love margaritas so this is saying a lot. Not to miss: queso dip, skirts enfuego salad, tacos "nicks way", asada mixto. Wow! You will not be disappointed, and will more then likely find yourself back sooner then you think.

Pros: Inexpensive, great food, fun
Cons: definitely a casual atmosphere

Damn Good Mexican Food and a lot of fun! 5 Star Rating - World class

if your looking for good times with some solid food and delicious margaritas then this is your place. I've been here several times and it never dissapoints. Whether I'm eating alone at the bar, or celebrating something or the other with a large group I always have a blast. Sure it's a little loud, but then again it's a festive Mexican Cantina. The tacos are the best. Be sure to order them Nick's way. I was there the other night and a huge bday party was going on. It looked like the staff went above and beyond so if your looking to celebrate with a big group, I'd go here.

Consistently disappointing. 2 Star Rating - Wouldn't recommend

Each experience at Tortilla Heights makes me wonder why I keep going back. Service is generally sub-par, sometimes dipping to intolerable and the food is mediocre at best, with the exception of the queso (but then, it's pretty hard to mess up melted cheese, if you ask me). Having been in the restaurant business I'm generally the one that's quick to defend a slammed waitress or a mistake by the kitchen, but Tortilla Heights leaves me at a loss for words. Not to mention that the food is not nearly good enough for how pricey it is. I placed a to-go order recently - Queso, Soup and a KIDS burrito. I was wrong to think that my order would be "quick". Or cheap. My kids burrito (beans and cheese) was $7. I waited for more than 10 minutes after I arrived - and I had called in my order. I was never offered so much as a glass of water while I waited. Unacceptable. I keep going back with hopes that the service will improve or that maybe I was just in a crummy mood on my last visit.
Nope.

Pros: Good margaritas, IF they arrive after you've ordered them...
Cons: Poor service, too expensive.

Bad food, expensive, horrible service and management 3 Star Rating - Satisfactory

New menu and prices, along with bad service have made this place the worst mexican resturant in SF.

In the past, the place was not bad, actually one of my favorite places to eat in this area. Unfortunately the menu changed, I believe they got a new chef, and the prices increased. I ate there recently and had a horrible experience.

First, disappointed that the menu changed - smaller menu with less variety. No a la carte, and as noted, the prices increased. The chips are different than before, not fresh, tasted like they were bag chips.

Second, rude and poor service. When we asked about the changes the waitress walked away mid-sentence.

Third, $32 for a pitcher of house margaritas that tasted like it was made with bandelero. They more than doubled the price of drinking and didn't mention it to us. It certainly felt like we were being ripped off when we got the bill. We spoke with the manager and that guy was rude as well.

Summary: Not recommended, I will not be returning. There are many other mediocre Mexican restaurants around that have better food, service, and that actually care about their customer's experience.

Pros: None.
Cons: $32 for house margaritas, poor revised menu, queso is now flavorless.

Service okay, but food was nothing spectacular 4 Star Rating - Very good

Some friends have mentioned this place before so we decided to give it a try. The food wasn't anything to rave about. The queso dip and the margaritas are good, but thats about it. I had the grilled fish veracruz - not so good; the steak tapiqueno was decent, but the enchiladas that were served with it tasted like it had canned cheese on it.

We hear the blue corn enchiladas are good - so I guess that's what we'll order if we ever decide to go back to this restaurant. But most likely, we won't be returning...

Pros: fun, lively atmosphere
Cons: parking
