The Duck & Dumpling

I ordered off the Price Fixe Menu for lunch - $12 for choice of appetizer, entree, and dessert. I had the salad which was bigger than i expected and their ginger dressing was creamier than i was used to, but very good. I chose the Tofu and Broccoli entree. The broccoli were cooked perfect - bright green and crunchy - they must have been steamed. And the tofu was placed in the middle. It was steaming hot with a crispy outside and thick delicious sauce. With the scoop of ice cream, it was just enough to satisfy me without weighing me down the rest of the day. My service was great - ask for Sean. I can't speak for the dinner portions as other reviewers had, but my meal size and quality was well worth $12.

I could eat at the Duck and Dumpling every day and be happy! I think I've tried almost everything on the menu and have found nothing disappointing! The Diver Sea Scallops in ginger sauce on Chef David's winter menu may be the best dish I've ever had, EVER.

I have read other reviewers complain about the size of the portions and it is true that the small plate offerings are small. That is why they are called "small plates." The large plate entrees are enough for one diner, but they are certainly not piled as high as one might dish it up at a strip mall chinese buffet. More importantly, the quality of the food at the Duck is exquisite! This is Asian food at its finest!

In addition, I need to comment on the other things that make the Duck such an outstanding dining experience. The decor and ambience are delightful. The wait staff is attentive and friendly without hovering or talking incessively. Almost every time I've eaten there, Chef David Mao has come out of the kitchen to greet diners, giving our meal a very personalized feeling. And to top dinner off, the Webbed-Foot coffee drink is absolute perfection! (Organic, fair-trade coffee with Amaretto, Baileys, and Godiva Dark. Yum!)

My recommendation for best-ever meal: Start a with a Ginger Lemon Drop or Asian Pear martini. Or ask what seasonal or fresh fruit martinis they are serving. For your appetizer, I recommend the Hot & Sour soup and Chef David's Signature Half-fried Dumplings. (The papaya salad and the basil shrimp wonton are also great.) Order a Dark & Stormy (rum and ginger) cocktail with your entree, which you should hope and pray that the Diver's Sea Scallops with Ginger Sauce is on the menu; if not, Steamed Sea Bass with Baby Bok Choy & Shiitake Mushrooms, the Filet Mignon Chinois with Seaweed Salad, or the Thai Basil Shrimp are all absolutely heaven-in-the-mouth delicious! If you are having lunch at the Duck, start with the spring rolls or summer rolls and mixed greens salad; try any of Chef David's luncheon specials or treat yourself to his moo shu duck. For dessert, the Spiced Asian Pear with ginger ice cream is a treat unlike anything you've had anywhere else and must be tried before anything else. If everyone in your party is ordering dessert for all to share (a highly recommended practice!) put the key lime pie and the tiramisu on the list along with something chocolate. And the Duck is a chocoholic's delight. The chocolate souffle, the triple chocolate cheesecake and the chocolate bundt cake are all wonderful; but the Chocolate Pyramid filled with white chocolate ganache is simply to-die-for, above all other chocolate on the menu. Enjoy that with a Chocolate Satin or Milky Way martini before you finish off your meal with a dessert coffee (the Webbed-Foot and the Downtown recommended).

I can't say enough good things about this restaurant. I would put Chef David up against any "top chef" anywhere!

The food was good, but I am still hungry even after spending over $130 for 3 people. The portion sizes were very small on the appetizers as well as entrees. The entree called Lion's Head was very misleading. It was supposed to be ground pork wrapped around diver sea scallops. Well, there was ONE scallop on this entree, and it was small and overcooked-- not what I expected for $22. There was a dessert called Chocolate Souffle. It was NOT a souffle at all. Instead, it was a small brownie, heated in the microwave with chocolate syrup over it -- again, not what I expected for $6. What a disappointment. I won't be returning to this restaurant.

I have never liked dumplings. I even lived near Cinatown in NYC but I just didn't like them. But a friend took me to Duck and Dumpling the other night and we had their pork dumplings and I have seen the light!!!
So much flavor. Our server said the chef hand rolls them all. You must try these when you go. The place even reminds me of some hippy-chic urban restaurant. The decor feels like a night on the town. We also had hummus made from edamame. Our entrees included sea bass with a citrusy-soy sauce, honey ginger scallops, and their fried rice with shrimp and Chinese sausage(yum). The watermelon martini was perfect and the wine list was varied and reasonable. Our server was friendly and everyone was happy. Thank goodness for a staff that cares. Did not get dessert, but the list was interesting. The chef even came out to check on us. Nice touch, chef! Thank you for this unique spot in downtown Raleigh. Try it yourself.

The Duck & Dumpling is a favorite stop on the Raleigh Food Tour. Not only is the presentation delicious to the eye, the handmade dumplings are scrumptious. The attention to detail at this restaurant sets it apart from the ordinary. The dinners are a fabulous fusion of flavor and never disappoint. Try the succulent tenderloin tips or seafood medley. The fresh flavors of ginger or lemongrass soar. This is the real thing!

My wife and I had heard that this place was a great dinning experience. Let me tell you just how "great" it wasn't; we were not very hungry so we stopped in to grab a drink and a couple of appetizers. If the bartender could have fit one more ice cube in my glass it would have officially been the first frozen gin & tonic. We ordered two different appetizers, the eggplant dish (8.50) and the spring wrap (6.00). The eggplant dish was composed of three small slices of eggplant with a shrimp puree on it. If we were runway models this would have been something we needed a doggie bag for. The bartender brought our spring rolls out about ten minutes later after she said that she would go back to the kitchen to see where they were. After being extremely dissapointed with the eggplant, we actually got a little excited with the delay thinking she would appear with a plate of six to eight spring wraps. NOT! They brought out a plate with two, yes two spring rolls on it. We could see why it took an extra ten minutes to prepare that. It's a possibility that dinners could be much better here but if they are anything like the anorexic food we were served, you had better have a back up plan. We spent $32 plus tip for something that cost the restaurant about $2, boy are we in the wrong business!

I ate at The Duck and Dumpling for the first time, after wanting to eat there for years. I am so glad I did. As I ate my first bite of food, I realized the low quality of other Asian food I had eaten in the past. Each dish I ate was creative, light, and full of flavor. This is the way all Asian food should taste. The restaurant itself is trendy and chic, and the service was good. Everyone was very friendly. I will definitely return.

I have been seeing some negative reviews about "The Duck" and just wanted to put out there that my husband and I very happily frequent this restaurant. I love almost everything ( I am allergic to shellfish) that Chef Mao puts on my plate and "The Duck" reminds me of being in New York. I am always happy with the service, quality of food and the attention to detail. If you haven't been, you should DEFINATELY try it!!

This place was absolutely awful. Our waiter talked 100mph and he rushed us way too much. He kept walking in and out of the restaurant which also made me feel very uneasy, and for some reason, when we were done eating, he didn't come to us with the check or take our plates away for literally 15 minutes! The food, it wasn't all that, especially for the money. I ordered the lemon grass chicken thing which was absolutely horrible, not too mention the minimal amount of food they gave me for the $17 plate. My boyfriend got absolutely sick from the duck soup thing and he was sick for about 2 days because of the food! All in all, it's a cute environment, but AWFUL FOOD and TERRIBLE SERVICE! Don't go!

The taste of the food is quality. Great menu items and a lot of good flavor to the dishes, but for the price of the dishes I was expecting a little more quantity. The dumpling sampler plate was a good 6-8 dollars I believe and they only give you 4 dumplings. You can get a greater value at a mom and pop's dim sum place. The decor was impressive and I loved the art, its a nice date place to impress someone but not a place I would visit frequently.

It is too bad the disgruntled diners were narrowly focused, and not open-minded. This is not authentic Chinese. Chinese Bistro, Asian Bistro, call it what you will. There is a blending of old and new, East and West. Chef David always walks the floor to visit with customers and will send out complementry samples of soups and appetizers. The service has always been professional, the staff is well versed on the menu and is ready to provide recommendations. The parking situation may be inconvenient, but the walk is worth it. I have been there several times and will visit at least once everytime in am in Raleigh.

I thought it would be cheaper and taste better if I could get a bag of dumplings from Asian Market and make a dish for the whole family. The dumplings were not cooked right. By the way, why people here attack one another for expressing his/her opinion? It's only a personal opinion.

The food was just OK here. If you are looking for fancy continental sized services of fusion style food, then you are at the right place. Personally, when I eat Chinese, I'm looking for a place that's going to have authentic food. The ambience here is amazingly beautiful, however, I go to restaruants to eat, not to be wowed by interiors.

Been there couple of times for the dumplings. The staffs are quite friendly but the price is a bit high for the kind of food they are serving. Overall, this is a better Chinese restaurant in Raleigh. Now, what the hell is "Asian Bistro"??? What's next "Indian Brasserie"? I find this Asian Fusion concept a bit played out.

I came into the Duck and Dumpling on a hopping Saturday night with several friends. We didn't have a reservation so we waited at the bar for a table. The decor is great, lots of style, very hip. I felt like I was in a total urban setting. The red lights over the bar are cool. The bar staff was friendly and informative, with many drink specials to choose from. It was clear they enjoyed being there. I looked over a menu as we waited. It was so interesting-sounding. We got to the table, a little crowded, but, hey, it's a bistro. Our server was wonderful. On a busy night, she still had time to chat us up and make friends. More features. The homemade dumplings are the best. I had roast duck with a cherry sauce. The others had filet, duck soup, and ginger lamb. We had to share because it was all so good. The chef even came by our table to check on us. I love that. We skipped dessert, but the menu looked tempting. Thank goodness for a staff that cares!

I really dont know what that last guys talking about because our meal was GREAT!
My husband and I went to The Duck and Dumpling on Friday because it was suggested by friends and WOW!! I had a FABULOUS Pumpkin Martini, 2 acutally, that tasted like spiked pumpkin pie. Our waitress told us about the appetizer and dinner features, of which there are many, and told us if we hadnt been in before we HAD to try the dumplings, which is EXACTLY what are friends who recommended the restaurant had said. I am so glad that we did because the dumplings are AMAZING! My husband said They dont call it The Duck and Dumpling for nothing My husband had the shu mai dumplings and I had pork dumplings, my mouth is watering just thinking about them now!
For dinner my husband choose the roasted duck with a cherry wine sauce, one of the features, and I was told on a recommendation to try the Scallop dish on the menu.
As dinner arrived I noticed how wonderful everything looked on the plate and was immediately jealous that I didnt have cherry wine sauce on my scallops, that is until I tried my scallops and was blown away by how good they were. I love scallops and I love things a little spicy and this dish was MADE for mesoo good. My husband dish was very good as well, the roasted duck was SO tender and delicious.
About halfway through our meal Chef David came out and asked how everything was and if we were having a good time, which of course we were, it was so nice to meet the man behind the restaurant.
I will DEFINITELY return to this restaurant, we had such and wonderful time! The ambience was great, the staff was very polite and helpful and the food was FABULOUS!

Having searched for decent Asian food in the Triangle, this has been one of my favorites thus far. The dumplings are good! Almost as good as mom makes. Entrees are much better than the average we get in Raleigh - clean tasting flavors, expertly stir fried (perfectly cooked meat and veggies). If you're expecting food drenched in gloppy sugary sauce - this is not the place. We had the ginger lamb and moo shu duck - both were delicious. The only complaint is the moo shu wrappers were a little tough. The waitress was great - knew the menu as well as the wine list with great recommendations. Chef Mao was in the restaurant and visited the tables - it was great to see him so involved with the service! The only downside is that the desserts seem to be the standard restaurant fare - not much of an Asian theme, and likely not made in house. Despite this, the chocolate bundt cake was fabulous - possibly one of the best I've ever had.

From a favorite restaurant to the most despised in Raleigh, all it took was a series of unfortunate events. Dining here on my birthday, the bartender offered a free bottle of wine but later billed us for it at the end of the meal. The Manager later called and apologized and offered the wine again. Returning a few days ago, the offer of the wine was retracted to my dismay as the owner stated the Manager exceeded her authority. This bait and switch type tactic will keep me from ever returning again. And the food continues to slide downhill. In recent meals, lamb with scallions was a few strips of Food Lion grade lamb at a high price. Tuna tartar was attractive on the plate but seemed to have been made hours before and had an undertaste of unfreshness. And avoid the oyster specials at all costs as the oysters are extremely fishy. Perhaps, the simple dishes of stir fried chicken or won ton soup are the best but can be obtained for half the price at your local strip mall Chinese restaurant. Don't waste your time or your money. Perhaps, the restaurant should be renamed "Duck and Fumbling". That would closer describe the restaurant in its current state. The upscale urban surroundings cannot mask the customer service fiascos and problems in the kitchen. On a positive note, the new female bartender is excellent and makes spectacular drinks!!!!!!

The service was the only shining spot in a night of mediocre food. Their dumplings were great I'll give them credit for that. It's too bad you can't get a whole meal of just dumplings. The Sushi grade tuna was flaky but the taste was a bit off, and the vegetables for lack of a better term were bitter and took away from the flavor. Their "Shaken Beef" was supposed to be shaken in a sauce, but the only taste I received was from the sauce at the bottom of the dish-and overall the meat just tasted like unrubbed/unmarinated/unspiced beef.
The first time I was here I enjoyed it and thought it a bit overpriced for the portions. Upon returning a second time the food on a non-busy night (there were only 4 patrons) the food was severly lacking. I am the type of diner that likes quantity and quality and am willing to pay for it. However the quantity was minimal and the quality (aside from the dumplings) was lacking. I don't think I'll be returning anytime in the near future.

We expected this place to be above all of chinese restaurants in as far as taste but nothing unusual here. The appetizers were expensive for what you get and the entrees though nice presentation left me still hungry. We were paying for the presentation than the taste of the food. I had better at other Chinese restaurants. We would not go back!

The Duck and Dumpling is one of the few Asian restaurants I can go to in the Triangle-actually I drive all the way from Chapel Hill. Its not the typical Americanized Asian fare doled out at most Chinese/Japanese restaurants in the area so it is a welcomed change. Not only was the food and presentation outstanding, I found the service to be excellent as well.

I've read several of the reviews and many were a little critical. This is not a chinese restaurant. The menu is oriental based but is very original. We moved here from Seattle and quite frankly the restaurant reminds me more of one found on the west coast. I find the food exceptional and go quite often. You cannot beat the price. I also think it is a great place if you have children; my kids love it.

My partner and I dropped in here unexpectedly after a downtown concert, and we decided to stop for drinks and appetizers. We were both exceedingly impressed with the tastes of the dumplings and the very upscale New York ambience. There was definitely a feel that we were not in Raleigh, but the wait staff were quick and friendly enough to remind us that we were. Will definitely go back again!!

There's a saying about most Asian food: you'll be hungry 30 minutes later. With this place, I just wanted to go back 30 minutes later to enjoy the vibe. The food's great--great filet cubes especially--but the overall feel really sets it apart. I would tell anybody who's looking for a hot date spot, go here. A huge step forward for Raleigh!!

Hands down the greatest addition to the downtown Raleigh restaurant scene. It's touted as Asian Bistro, not chinese so the food isn't oversauced, greasy, oily and fried like chinese food. The menu is well thought out matching sauces with appetizers to bring out the full flavor of different ingredients. Full flavors, great smell, friendly service, yum!
And a great room in the back for parties of 12 or less.

The food was ok- tried 3 different items (spring roll... not memorable), Tofu & Broccoli (bland) and a Chef's Special of Radish and Beans (salty). I probably won't go back, but it is an attractive place, the ambience was good, and the service was great. Perhaps if they upped the flavor I would be more excited that a place with such variety is actually in downtown Raleigh!

but needs bolder flavors. The very likeable Chef David does a great job of presenting gourmet Chinese dishes, like the handmade shrimp and pork dumplings, moo shoo duck with hand-made wrappers, tender lamb, etc. However, the dishes lack the bold Chinese flavors that I hoped to find there. Traditional Chinese has wonderful flavors of five-spice, salty black beans, chili, sesame oil, ginger, sweet&sour, hot&sour, etc. but I did not find those exciting flavors here. My favorites were the dumplings and moo shoo duck. I'll return for more, but I hope to find more flavor next time. Pao Lim in Durham offers stiff competition with bolder flavors.

Everyone who works at this restaurant is extremely friendly. I recommend this to anyone wishing to have a good time. The bartenders make very good martini's-- ask for Terrance or Kendra. Both are very knowledgable and know the menu very well. The only down side is the music, which I have been told they are working on. The food is excellent... this is one of my favorite places in Raleigh.

I'm a professional bartender/amauter restaraunt critic, so I thought I'd check out this new asian restaraunt for lunch. The food was good, the atmosphere was good, the service was good. My only complaints/suggestions would be a larger menu (perhaps the dinner menu has more to offer. . . the lunch menu today had about 2 soups, 4 appetizers and 4 entrees), smoking should be allowed at the bar, and the bartender needs to be a bit more personable. I tried engaging him in conversation a couple of times, but he seemed dis-interested, although he was courteous and attentive.

Atmosphere: simple, chic, but needs music. Service: BAD management. Food: very disappointing H&S soup was ok. Spring roll wrapped so thin, it barely had but a few veggie shreds in it. Shrimp fresh, but had no natural flavors. Dumplings definitely disappointing, too mushy, filling lacked flavor. Chicken I think it ODed on sugar; it was way too sweet. Price: not reasonable for what you get. If you want authentic and flavorful Asian food, try these places (some may not be as trendy, but the food is tasty!) Red Palace Peking/Beijing duck; China One dim sum; Fortune Palace steamed fish (flavored with ginger, black beans, scallions 1 of my favorites); Pho Cali huge soup bowls There are so many more establishments that serve wonderful foods at reasonable prices. Just remember, those prices are reasonable because theyre not all hyped up like D&D.

My wife and I dined at D&D for the first time last night and it was a delightful experience. The decor immediately impressed us and the seating is perfectly spaced. The food is unlike any Chinese food I've ever eaten. I tasted new and exciting flavors for the 1st time. The spring rolls are little flavor bombs and the two sauces are a very interesting contrast to one another. The handmade dumplings are full of flavor and should not be missed. The Kung Pao Shrimp is the best I've ever tasted; delightful in it's simplicity and flavor. The chef, David, came by and told us about his dishes; he should be very proud of his creations. I cannot wait to return and try the wonton soup which contains homemade wontons. We sat at the bar after dinner and it is wonderful; no smoking & great martinis.

Our second visit to the D&D was for Valentine's. We were thrilled to get a reservation, and were seated immediately. The service was just right; knowledgeable, friendly, and not intrusive. Our appetizers and entrees were delicious, and beautifully presented. We were visited by the manager, John, as well as the chef; a lovely touch. We highly recommend the Duck and Dumpling!

I made reservations for 9:00 and we were seated at 10:20 or so. They did give us a couple of free appetizer's but not until I went to them and asked them what the problem was. The food was ok. I can't say enough about the D&D. Visually you are greeted with wall panels and a deep bar of beautiful cherry. The lucky color red is reflected in the lights and behind flowing fabric panels concealing the rough stylings of the ceiling. A low wall topped off with glass partitions helps separate the dinging area and the bar area. And then there's the food. The pork and shrimp dumplings were succulent, the vegetarian spring rolls were snacktastic, the filet chinois in a garlic sauce was tender and tasty, and the shrimp kung pow was heavenly. It was a wonderful asian-food-fusion! Ginger and green tea ice cream and chocolate melting cake topped it off. The servers and management took wonderful care of us, and the price can't be beat! I'm off to suggest it to all my friends. Best

The warm red hues and cool urban interiors are delightful. The Asian Fusion is high on quality presentation and nutrition. Then there's the service: quick and efficient. We asked for sauce to jazz up the house fried rice and the staff kept bringing us sauces until we had every sauce in the house!

It's simple, new restaurants aren't perfect and need time to get to where they want to be and anyone who can't see that is only trying to destroy small business, like the review below mine. I went in for lunch yesterday and was very please. The prices are fair, if not somewhat inexpensive, service was fine, the restaurant is very cool and hip. I recommend it, you will have a good time and enjoy your food.

From the half fried dumplings to the filet to the green tea icecream--everything was heavenly. We felt very taken care without feeling smothered, even with the chef himself making two appearances at our table. The wine suggestion was right on the money and while the portions were plentiful, none of the four courses we enjoyed were overwhelming. I thought the kung-pao shrimp was perfect as my main dish, but closely followed by the duck and the filet.

The best part about the ambiance, I believe, was the lighting and the light fixtures. I couldn't help but wonder who did them--nothing less than artwork.

'Classy bar area and the manager, John Riggs, makes a great dirty martini!!

As a side note, I noticed a very cozy side room just large enough for one large table and about 6-8 chairs that would be wonderful for a small group.

Pros: chic but cozy, Attentive Service, Wonderful Food

The restaurant looks beautiful, food is perfectly presented...and then it all fails. The service SUCKS...big time, and the food is such a let down. The owner should go back to the type of food he was preparing when he was in Cameron Village. It's got all the potential...trendy...good seating...but the food needs to be improved before I'll go back.
