Downtown bound, Harlem Bar is the perfect place to 'chillax' after six o'clock, seven days a week. The space is just small and open enough to make mingling extremely easy and natural. Harlem Bar has an uncanny ability of always landing the perfect DJ - which is clutch for any unwinding time. Though they have tampered with and altered the menu since they've opened, they still haven't gotten it right. The soul-foodish selection is overpriced and simply not good. Go, mingle, have a great time but swing by the Waffle House on the way home.

My friend had told me she had the most amazing soul food at the Harlem Bar, a tiny restaurant on Edgewood Ave, so I thought I'd try it out. Too bad she didn't mention that was 8 months ago.
The restaurant wasn't serving entrees, only appetizers and sides. The mac and cheese was tasteless, the yams were from a can and they were out of half of the other sides. Our waitress was inattentive and brought the check after 1 drink when I'd been planning on having a few.
The real kicker was my bill for chicken wings, one side and 2 drinks was $46. I'll waste my money at the Harlem bar again.

This is a nice place. I have been 4 times and on one visit my husbands food was not right and the manger went into the kitchen cooked it himself to make it right and gave him free desert. The workers are always nice and friendly.

My husband and girlfriend went to hang out and eat. The atmosphere was very nice. We did not wait long. When we got the menu and it was very limited and the prices were high. So I figured the food had to be gooood. Booooy was I wrong. The cornbread was on point. I ordered the meat loaf mac and cheese and collard greens. It was not worth $14. The food was very bland and my girlfriend had to use hot sauce on the fried chicken bc it was sooo bland. My husband eats anything so he really did not have any complaints. But this place is waaaayyy over priced.

Went here with Friends. We ordered drinks, and they were okay.
I Ordered their fried chicken dinner which was 1/4 White meat and two sides for $11!
I immediately asked for another piece of chicken and was told that mgmt would charge
me $3 so now im up to 14!

I bit into the chicken and it was TASTELESS! I'd never had such a BLAND
PIECE OF CHICKEN IN MY LIFE! I told the server that I wanted to send it
back. He went to get the mgr.

The mgr then insulted me by saying that I hadn't even tasted the chicken!
I showed him the piece of the wing that i'd bitten into and he further insulted me
by saying that I'd only be able to taste the flavor if I bit into the breast !
BS! I know good seasoned food and you can taste it in the first bite!
I bit into it (breast) and the same thing.
I asked him to make a suggestion for me, and i shouldn't have done that. He
suggested the turkey meatloaf. I'm assuming because its probably the most
profitable item on his menu due to the cheap cost of ground turkey!

The mgr took the dish away, and came back 5 minutes later, with a sheepish
grin on his face laughing saying that that was a great piece of chicken! This fool
bit into the other piece on my plate! (How Nasty!)

They brought it out steaming and it was okay. The only thing that was really good
in my opinion were their collard greens! Sweet potatoes were okay, and the
Macaroni and cheese, had an "OVERBITE" of Sharp Cheddar!

What sent us over the age and further cemented my decision to NEVER GOT HERE
AGAIN was what i witnessed at the table next to us.

Two women came in, ordered a drink. One drink wasn't good and the mgr had an
attitude as he went back to get another 1. The woman was offended & said that
they would just pay for the drink and leave. On his way back to the bar, he took a
sip of the lady's drink. Did he just get out of the halfway house? The mgr said
"JUST LEAVE"! NEVER EVER AGAIN! He has No Class!

Pros: Nice Decor, Atmosphere

Cons: Very Small, Manager Is an Arrogant, A-hole!

My girl had a great experience and had been really excited about us going there. It's a cool place, as was their other failed restaurant Rare. At the end of the day I'd say they have a knack for ambiance with no ability to deliver edible food.
The catfish fingers were great but not worth 9$. Then the 14$ entree's came. I had to ask for a decent fork as mine was all bent up and sorry i like it to be clean. So the pork chops were thin sliced basic KROGER pork-chops and Parmesan grit's were WEAK at best. Her salmon was cooked so hard I had to explain to the waitress that my fork stuck solidly in to the fish and stood like a flag.
The server was great and really tried to accommodate but at the end charged us for everything then ran my card for even more than the bill. Felt like a HARLEM SCAM if you ask me!!!!!
At the end of the day go to Piccadilly and have better food and better service. Go there for a drink but watch the wine list. 10$ wine that had been opened for a while. Stick to the beer and cocktails. and Try not to be a chump!

What ever you do, do not spend your money at this restaurant! The HARLEM BAR is HORRIBLE.!!!!!!!! I went there in November last year(2008), the food was really great, small portions but great food. I had out of town guests and bragged about this place so much that we went there during the Christmas holidays (2008). What an enormous mistake!!! They told us they were out of greens, how can you be out of greens and the place just opened for dinner at 6pm, we arrived at 6:30????? I had crab cakes and my guests had various dishes. Every stinkin' dish was horrible. It seems this place is under new management or something. They need to bring back the old chef and his/her assistants. The food was so bad, my guests refused to go to any other restaurants... Even a first grader can make better food than this. Please, don't go, you are truly wasting your money and time if you do. Guys get your mojo back because this one is not working!!!

My friend suggested Harlem Bar. First, parking is horrendous! We spent 5 minutes circling the block looking for a spot. When we finally entered and were seated I looked at the very limited menu. I ordered the smothered pork chops, mashed potatoes and mac-n-cheese. Nothing was seasoned properly, the cheese was clotty and the pork chops had more fat than edible meat. The drinks were completely watered down and there was no point in having a conversation at your table because the music was so loud. I will never go there again!

On 12/20/08 a group of 35-40 of us happily attended a graduation dinner at Harlem Bar. I started the evening experimenting with the drink called Harlem Shake, after a literal taste (no fault of the bartender) it was not to my liking. I requested a Cab Sauv instead or to replace it. The server said I had to speak to his manager. After an extended time I inquired again and he said "did you speak to my manager?" Was I, the guest, suppose to look or fetch the manager?!! To my shock, I had to get the manager?s attention. At the end of the night I was charged, at the consent of the manager, for TWO drinks. I've NEVER heard of paying for a drink you did not like or consume. I did not want a free drink. I simply wanted a drink I could enjoy. Secondly, if Harlem Bar is just opening it?s door for the evening don't ask for "(corn)bread" even if it?s on the menu because they will not have it ? 86 it! Harlem Bar has atmosphere that's it! You can get better customer service and food elsewhere in Atlanta. Save yourself the grief.

Me and my boyfriend went here on Valentines Day because it looked interesting and wanted to check it out. Theres no safe parking, and ladies if you are wearing heels it is extremely likely that you will break your ankle trying to walk across that "parking lot". The food was so bland and sloppily presented. My greens were drenched in some sauce and were absolutely disgusting. Our server could not have been any more unenthusiastic and less interested in our business. He came across like some kind of robot. We were charged $10 in refills, mind you the cups are about as big as toddlers sippy cup and the server could have told us we were getting charged. The ONLY pleasent thing about this restaraunt was the peach cobbler.

I was in town for a week long conference and a friend who lived in Atlanta suggested that we go there for dinner. I must say that the food was great! I had turkey meat loaf with mashed potatoes and collard greens and my friends had the fried chicken ceasar salad and blackened catfish with mac and cheese and spinach. We all had several martini's. The atmosphere was very relaxing and the service was good. I enjoyed it so much that I went twice in one week. They even called a taxi for us when we were ready to leave. Oh and I have to say that the peach cobbler was banging! We wanted the sweet potato cheese cake but they were all out. The cobbler was just as good if not better. I'm from Philly so it was nice to get out of the hotel and go to a place that felt right. The only negative thing that I can say is that the side portions on the second night were very light. If I did not have dessert I would have left hungry.

I love the Harlem Bar. Everything about The Harlem Bar sings quite sophistication. When we arrived at The Harlem Bar we were seated fairly quickly. My girlfriends and I started off with Martinis. I have the Banana Pudding Martini which I should have waited until after dinner to have because it was better the actual Banana Pudding you have from your grandmother. Also, please get there early because the seating is limited. The Harlem Bar is known for their eclectic Soul Food menu. We started off with the, Chicken, Collard Greens & Mac & Cheese. I love this spot because it casual. If you just want to hang out with friends this is the place to be.

I was in town for the weekend and wanted a cool place NOT to crowded to eat and drink. This place was nice. Not too crowded. The food was okay. The drinks GREAT! The service good. The DJ and music AWESOME! A nice plce to go and get a quick bite (shrimp and grits) and drink before heading home or after the movies (i do not go clubbing) :-) I didn't like it being under and overpass, but the drink quickly took that edge off. I would recommend this place to anyone looking to unwind with friends.

I went to this restaurant because it was my friend's birthday party. (Not a good idea!)
My main problem with the restaurant was my server. She did not check on us on a regular basis & at the night of the day it took her 30 minutes to cash us out.
The best part about this restaurant was the music! We came just in time to hear the last 30 minutes of the live band! They were on point with some of my favorite oldies & soul tunes. Even after they left, the DJ had some good tunes too! (If your the type that likes to talk during your dinner- I would not suggest Harlem Bar- solely because most of the night you will be yelling back an forth to one another.)
The food was o.k. I ordered the Caribbean style chicken that starts with a J along w/ rice & plantains. (Citysearch will not allow me to include the real spelling of the word J. Chicken- they think its in appropriate.) The chicken was not really spicy- which was o.k. The rice was bland and the plantains were pretty good.
Overall, I'd give the restaurant a C for the good band/dj music, which makes up for the slow service and food.

After one of our favorite spots, Shark Bar, my wife and I decided to try Harlem Bar. My wife is from Harlem, and was dying to try this place. Finding a safe place to park, was the first problem. Our server didn't seem to know what he was doing, but we certainly wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt. The drinks arrived, and it was someone else's drinks. The place became crowded. Our food arrived cold. And cold collard greens are not good. We don't think we will be back soon, but we are still looking for that cool soul cafe/loung in Atlanta.

If you look back, I posted a very positive review about a year ago. Well, things have changed for the worst since then. I went back there a few weeks ago after their "re opening" and was very disappointed. I took my best friend there and after raving about their wings, I realized that the entire menu has been revamped. Instead of the usual good finds, I noticed "purple mashed potatoes and braised leeks." What the f@#$ is that doing on a soul food menu? I talked to the server and manager about this sudden change and the manager informed me that he had managed Shark Bar (a wonderful place that closed) in the past and knows how to make it work. He stated that they are trying to go after a different demographic now (read=rich, upper class folks). Um, someone forgot to tell him that rich folks dont do that scary parking in that scary part of town.

The famous Georgia Peach martini, delicious wings and old catfish is off the menu. Also, no more of that delicious cornbread, it has been replaced with dried out "hoecakes." I ordered catfish fingers that were very scarce and skinny and mac and cheese that tasted like velveeta sauce, no crunchy real cheese topping like before. And the hoecake was a tiny dried out pancake. I left feeling very hungry and mournful for my used to be favorite restaurant.

My opinion is that this new and improved version is trying to hard to be something its not and has lost a lot of its magic. There are very few nice, soul food places with a full bar in Atlanta, maybe Gladys (no bar) and Justins (bad service) so Harlem Bar was in a league of its own. Unfortunately, with all these new changes, Im afraid it wont be around for long.

If you look back, I posted a very positive review about a year ago. Well, things have changed for the worst since then. Pros: Beautifucal decor

Cons: sketchy parking lot, new menu w/ few real soul food choices

Harlem Bar was a decent restaurant. The food was above average, but not absolutely delicious. I was not hungry, but wanted to try the food so I ate the macaroni and cheese and the candied yams. Our server was great, under the circumstances. We went on a Friday night and it was very crowded, (almost too crowded) and the music was way too loud. Although the dj played some great songs (jill Scott, Goapele, Jay-Z), I could hardly hear hear the people sitting across from me which made having a conversation very difficult. Both Rare and Harlem Bar are great alternatives to going out to a club on a Friday night. Unlike Rare, Harlem Bar has no dress code and is smaller.

yes I said it......I've been to Harlem Bar about 6 times now and I ALWAYS get a smooth, well mixed martini.....I don't experience that anywhere else in the city. The raspberry martini and the strawberry ice are my favorites. Oh yeah, the food is good too :-). My favorite is the tilapia or the blackened catifish with shrimp, and I love their spinach and garlic. I do wish the place was a little bigger though, I recommend making a reservation. You must try this place, even if it's just for the drinks.

Pros: THE DRINKS, atmosphere

Cons: Too small, not enough parking

.

The food was excellent. I had the smothered pork chops, collard greens and macaroni & cheese. The portions were sizable and I had to take some home. The drinks, martinis, tasted like cough syrup. So definitely stay away from the drinks....at least the martinis. It was a little dark but overall a pleasant experience. I recommend it though not the martinis.

I have to admit that i have been a regular at the harlem bar for almost a year Its kinda like a cool hip urban version of "Cheers". A place where the service staff knows your name and your drink. The catfish fingers and peach cobbler are the best in the city. And the atmosphere is so stylish and eclectic. Only problem is I wish the place was bigger so I can come and get my favorite seat everytime..... Like Norm!!!!!!

My first impression is someone tried to open the Shark Bar with less money. I wanted to take a date to there this week somi went on a Sunday night to scout out the place.
- Ordered chicken fingers and a side of macaroni and cheese. They were out of the chicken fingers. No prob.
- Ordered the fried BBQ glazed chicken wings. They were bought to me without any BBQ glaze. So I had chicken drummettes with no seasoning.
- The macaroni was excellent though.
-Lemonade was awful.
- I could see smudges on the glasses on the shelves. They did not look clean at all. They also looked like cheap glasses. (These are the reasons I ordered the lemonaid)
- While I was there they also ran out of the macaroni. My fault on that one folks. lol.
With all that said the place is still somehow kind of cool with the Dj providing a nice groove in the low lit atmosphere. Good place to stop and have a "beer" and listen to some cool music before you go somewhere else. But not a good primary spot and not a good place to impress your date. I hope a good manager can pull this spot together.

Pros: Ambience is nice and low key.

Cons: Poor food service standards.

Great food and fun, pending on how much time you have. The place is small but the drinks are great, and the waitresses try to help out but to many people in such a small place. However I would still recommend it maybe for a girls nite out with drinks!

HB is great to go to on Thurs before leopard lounge, but I made the mistake of going there at 6pm on Saturday to try out the menu. The food was great.... when I got it. Don't know if they had to manufacture a corona bottle---drinks alone took 20 minutes, with 5 waitresses in the place and only 4 other tables. My server was awful, another server tried to take up the slack at the end, but the bad impression was already made. From here on out I will only stop by for the drinks not the dining experience as they don't know what service is about yet. Hopefully they figure it out before the going the way of the shark bar and so many other spots where the owners didn't realize in time that service orientated business like a bar, needs servers who actually serve!

This trendy hot spot is my outta town guests favorite place for Soul food with flair. Groove to some awesome global and local beats. Excellent tasty cornbread, just right Turkey meatloaf, blackened, grilled catfish & Shrimp... silent blaxplotation films, some of us remember when?
I prefer Thursdays and Sundays....great for networking, cool beats!

I went to the Harlem Bar this past Saturday night, and the food took toooo long to come out. I couldn't tell
if they had to go to the Gulf of Mexico to catch the fish or import it from the Pacific Ocean. I ordered the Blackened catfish & shrimp, which would have been good, if it was hot. The customer service was average. I spoke to the
manager that night, and she stated that they had two new people as waitresses. The bartenders were cool though. I would recommend a Wetkiss.

CC (my "friend") and I dropped in on a Thursday and while the food is good, the setup leaves something to be desired. Thursday's live music consisted of a DJ playing music loud enough to drown any but the loudest conversation, and for a space so small overpowering music took some of the cool off the vibe. I've been for drinks when the music is lower and had a much better feel. The silent blaxplotation films playing give a groovy kind of ambience.

But the food! The greens and yams, the macaroni and cheese, the warm cornbread. Very very good. The cooking "made" the less than stellar cuts of meat treats, normally a dealbreaker on my menu. The menu is small but good, and service was quick and attentive. What really struck me was that the crowd started to diversify as we were finishing up. Not a bad spot.

I went with my three sisters and we hated it. The ambiance was nice, dim lighting, music, simple set up. The food wasn't bad it just wasn't good; the cheesecake was pure sugar (I could taste the sugar crystals). We had two servers yet we couldnt seem to get either of their attention. We sat there with salty food and sugar crystals for dessert. The whole experience was just not on point. And when it was time to pay we split the check and one of the servers just assumed the cash left over was his tip; never again will we go to the Harlem bar.

I visited the Harlem Bar, a tuesday evening before hitting Visions with friends and the service was so slow we decided not go to the club. The Skillet Fried Chicken was great and the Karma Sutra martini was on point. However, the server thought she was too cute to serve and the bartender was overwhelmed with the flow of business.
Words from the wise: Don't use you credit card. Cash only. Overall my experience was as expected these days...

I love this bar, I can't put my finger on why it's just so appealing. My company did Happy hour here, and didn't leave til 2am. I can't decide what I like most; the food, the people, or the energy. I'm wildly addicted to the fried green bean appetizer, and the fried chicken rivals Watershed. I love the smart, artistic regulars, the hip movies that are projected, and the music, whether I am swaying to the groove while I am engrossed in my dinner or sipping a martini listening to the DJ spin on Thursdays. Service can be hit or miss, but I can't leave it!

Great hot spot! great vibe! and great food. Nice place to go before going to the club. Cons: Kitchen was slow with the food and management was not concerned. Several customers had complaints and they just let them walk with out being apologetic including my group.

Being originally from New York, I am immediately suspicious of resturants and bars that use my home town in their title. Harlem Bar however, is not one of these places. From the decor and fresh music to the attractive wait staff and the food. Harlem Bar is my new neighborhood watering hole. There's nothing I don't like about this place. Now you're asking, "When I get to Harlem Bar, what should I try?" Good question. Having experienced most of what the menu has to offer, you can't go wrong. However as a macaroni & cheese connissuer, you have to try Harlem Bar's version. It's fantastic. I also highly recommend the Sweet Potato Cheesecake

Harlem bar is good for a drink, a first date, a good meal, good music and a cool vibe. I've been there a few times and have always had a good time. The drinks are perfect and the catfish nuggets are to die for! I also highly recommend the sweet potato cheesecake! What else can I say but GO VERY SOON!
