The Background
Fernbank's selections for the truly big screen take viewers to the peaks of mountains and the depths of oceans, while its wildlife films showcase the rest of earth. Recent selections include "Everest," "Lewis and Clark," "Africa: The Serengeti," and "Whales." The films, which have been showing since the museum's opening in 1992, often correlate with the museum's exhibitions and always draw diverse crowds.

The Experience
Fernbank's Imax screen is five stories high and 72 feet wide. All 315 seats provide a good view of the colossal screen, but for optimal viewing, chose the seats from the midsection to the top of the seating area. For an added twist, enjoy that trademark flight--the sudden swooping over the crest of a mountain and down into a valley--with adult beverage in hand at the Friday night Martinis and Imax showings.

Key Points

  • A world of discovery awaits
  • Fernbank's Martinis & IMAX?
  • Great mix of culture and fun

Hasn't changed in ages!

by Shanda D. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 247

This place has been the same forever. If you've been once you've been a thousand and one times. If you have young children who haven't been this is a great place. The nature trail is great. Make sure you bring water for this adventure. They really need to up grade.

Great Place to take the Family

by Shytown

My family and I enjoyed the day at the museum, the exhibition is always changing.

The children enjoyed seeing the Dinosaurs and the Children's Interactive room. I enjoyed seeing the fish and shells display. We all had a ball learning about the Arctic and Antarctica along with the Polar Bears and the Penguins.

Pros: Something for all ages

Great setting but not a great museum

by decaturmark

Sorry to say I have to agree with earlier posters who expect to see a world class history museum and are entirely let down after paying the enterence fee. Yes, the Fernbank boasts a beautifully natural setting. What it does not offer is any type of insightful or intriguing displays, nothing to really draw a visitor in to the vast learning experience that should be offered here. If it were a free museum, I'd call it a draw and enjoy the nice drive up the winding hill and beautiful scenery on the grounds. But it's not and the curator here should really examine what he or she is trying to do.

Pros: spectacular setting

Cons: overall, a real let down

Great Wedding Facility

by mlj528

I love Martinis & IMAX & had to write a review after seeing the fantastic grand canyon one. Martinis & Imax is a perfect date night- especially with the live music & cocktails before the show. I?ve been several times since moving to Atlanta and it's one of my top favorite activities in the city.

I actually just attended a beautiful wedding at Fernbank- who knew Fernbank was an ideal location for a wedding ceremony and reception?! The wedding was at the front of the museum overlooking the front lawn, and the reception was in the huge foyer which was perfect for the band & food setup- the bride & groom entered the reception down the gorgeous winding staircase. The band had a perfect setup towards the back of the foyer. I highly recommend Fernbank to any bride-to-be looking for an awesome place to have the wedding & reception.

Pros: Great event facility & museum

Cons: Wish Martinis & Imax was on Saturdays too

Atlanta can do better in terms of a natural history museum

by lagirl3000

this is a very unfortunate representation of a natural history museum. were are the exhibits? one very large dinosaur skeleton and that about raps up your visit. I am disturbed by the lack of artifacts and exhibits especially after having grown up with natural history museums found in Chicago and Cleveland to base a comparison on. is it lack of funding that prevented this from being a world class natural history museum? I say atlanta should really be able to command better.

Pros: beautiful building

Cons: lack of exhibits, attractions, over priced

I recently went here on a date night. The martinis and live music were great! The Imax theater after a few cocktails is a fun experience. I recommend it to anyone to give it a try.

Take the kids it's worth the trip

by dbell26

I have to admit that my wife made me go to the museum and I thought it would be awful! When we got there she made us become members of the museum so we would have free admission and other perks the next time we visited the museum. Much to my surprise it was pretty cool and the kids really enjoyed theirselves as they learned about history and nature. The membership has more than paid for it's self since we have been 3 times this year. The events are really nice and I would recommend the Imax movies.

Pros: Great events and fun for the whole family

Cons: None

"Fernbank and Felini's"

by collectingevidence

My son is now 18 years old and we still enjoy going to Fernbank and the IMAX theatre. We've been patroning the museum for most of his life and we always top it off with a trip to Felini's afterwards for the city's best pizza. We call it "Fernbank and Felini's". I have also enjoyed Martinis and IMAX with my life companion. Fernbank is truly a great pick for all ages and for first dates.

Outrageously Impressive

Love the Fernbank -- the permanent collection, the peaceful surrounding, the "escape" element for children & adults, the events. It is a fabulous center for our city..
