We went to Avra Saturday Night. We had a great experience with good food and staff. There was a wedding reception downstairs, so we had to sit upstairs. They have done a great job with a beautiful old house. There is so much character and charm it is amazing.

Even with a full reception they did not miss a beat. Everything came out wonderful and they party sounded like they were have the time of their lives. This is a must for any food lover. GREAT, GREAT, GREAT!!!!

What a terrible experience. I had heard good things, so I decided to go with my family for my birthday. After arriving early to a 3/4 empty restaurant (at 7:30 on a Saturday evening), I sat at the bar for a full 15 minutes before someone came and took a drink order. I ordered the house white which cost me $11.

After sitting down to dinner we ordered an appetizer of hummus. It looked like they used a melon scooper to give us a thimble sized helping of hummus, and then charged us $5 for it. After waiting for another 15 minutes to see our waitress again, we finally ordered. Thereafter, and after waiting another 25 minutes for our food, we got a little hungary so we asked if there was some bread we could have. "Sure" our waitress told us, and brought it out to us, and charged us another 5.25.

When our food finally came it was moderate at best. I ordered a kebob that came on a hanging skewer. After succesfully getting the meat off the skewer I ate some of the blandest lamb I have ever tasted. Two people at our table ordered a couple mezze dishes. One lamb souvlaki came absolutely raw, despite being ordered medium, and one stuffed pepper came cold.

To add insult to injury, our waitress added the 20% mandatory gratuity for parties of 6 to our bill even though we were a party of 5. When I called the manager to discuss th situation with him he spent the entire time blaming me and denying that anything could have gone wrong.

All of this is to say DO NOT GO TO AVRA. It is a RIP OFF and a bad restaurant.

This little Greek restaurant is so pleasant in the spring and summer months with their outdoor seating. The atmosphere is great as well as the food. I enjoyed this place when they were opened for lunch during week days (only Friday now) but that doesn't stop me from coming back for more. Recommend the gyros!

A few friends and I decided to do Greek on Saturday night and found ourselves at Avra Greek Tavern. I have been to Taverna Plaka a few times and loved it but tried not to let that be the standard at which I judged Avra. I just wasn't impressed. The food was slightly above average when at those prices I expected excellence. Food aside, the reason that I will not be returning and I would not reccomend this restaurant EVER is the service. First of all, the restaurant seemed to be out of EVERYTHING that night (as I found out when my diet coke was refilled with regular coke and it wasn't until I asked the waiter that I was told "We are out of diet coke"...um yeah, it would've been nice to have had a choice before you made the decision for me that I was going to switch to regular).....secondly, the drinks were only refilled one time over the course of about an hour and a half dinner. There was no customary bread served and the potatoes were too seasoned and luke warm. After we paid our check and left, a member of our party had to use the rest room so she went back in and overheard our waiter complaining to another waiter about his tip from our party (which incidentally was forced upon us as the customary %20 for parties over 5 or he would not have even got that because he definitely did not earn it)....So, yes, this place is loaded with class. Next time it will be Taverna Plaka that receives our patronage.

After a bit of a mishap with the taxi (if you are downtown don't let your driver head to the one in Alpharetta) the restaurant was a treat. The atmosphere was cozy, and got even more so when they closed the drapes for us due to the cold. The food and service were wonderful, I'd advise just getting a good selections of appetizers (tappas) and making that your dinner. I'd also recommend the wonderful sweet red dessert wine, it topped off the evening perfectly. We'll be returning to this one when in Atlanta again.

I recently had a large business function at this restaurant. It was a very nice atmosphere. But my food tasted terrible and the meat on my kabob was fatty and over cooked.. The service staff was good and so was the wine. I won't go again but if you decide to. Just go for some drinks.

We had the pleasant experience of stopping by FIREPLACE GRILL, which I understand is owned by Avra's and had a much needed drink at the bar one Friday afternoon. What made it so pleasant was our bartender, Lisa. She was absolutely outstanding! (I think we actually recognized her as being Melissa Wolf, the girl who had been unfortunately caught up in all the recent news drama) Nevertheless, we received first-class service from her and we found ourselves feeling very comfortable and settled in within a relatively short time after arriving. Not just because of the great drinks she mixed, but also because she was very personable and a great conversationalist who made us feel as though she and we were old friends. To our dismay, we went back just recently and Lisa was no longer there. To bad, because she was the only reason we decided to go back, and her absence will be the only reason we will not be returning. Lisa, the bartender, was certainly an asset to your establishment. Everything else was mediocre at best.

UPDATE: Now, I'm being told that the owner, Bill, is refusing to pay Lisa Taylor her past wages and tips, and has taken advantage of her past unfortunate legal situation by threatening to have her probation revoked by telling authorities that she was conducting illegal activities within the establishment. Niether I or any of my associates will be patrons of either Avra's or Fireplace Grill until Lisa is paid what she is owed.

I will not be back to this resturant that unfairly holds back wages and tips from employees and recently fired one when she asked the owner for her wages and tipe due. I will not return until they pay Lisa Taylor the wages and tips she earned while working there.

Had a casual dinner with a couple of friends. The tapas ranged from pretty good to okay; definitely only enough for 2 people. The bartender was really great. Even though we were eating at a table outside, he came out to ask if we liked our drinks or wanted anything made differently. There was only one problem: our waiter (in training) spilled a drink and then charged us for it, which was an honest mistake; he was very apologetic. When we asked that it be taken off the bill, we got major attitude from the "head" waiter who was doing the training. Our experience had been great up until that point, but was then unfortunately tainted. The rest of the staff was really great though! I will definitely go back, but I'll either sit at the bar or ask not to be seated in the rude waiter's section.

Going to Avra's is like visiting a relative who owns a restaurant. Sharing Greek inspired tapas and authentic Greek wines while customers and staff chat about politics, sports, or the economy makes you feel like you are at a Greek "Cheers." If you're there for stiff but attentive service, that's available too, but you may soon feel like passing that by for a casual chat with Bill, the owner, who is there most days. For wine, try the Gaia Notios (rich, red, cherry and berry notes) which was quite unlike Caliropian offerings. Some of the dishes are very nice, like the flaming cheese, grilled octopus (usually), lamb souvlaki, and the red pepper spread. Most entrees are good size and tasty. A few are inspired. Eating here is just plain fun.

In a nutshell, our waitress was too busy chatting it up with another waitress to stop by our table for over 15 minutes. In fact, she only came to take our order after my husband got up and actually called her over. Then, she got my drink wrong after dropping my silverware on the floor. She was so inattentive, she didn't even ask if we would like another drink during the entire meal. Notably, we were her ONLY table.

As for the quality of the food, we were disappointed at how much of what they served tasted straight out of a can, including the traditional tzatziki sauce. Finally, my entree, the moussaka was cold in the middle.

We could have gotten a much more satisfying ethnic meal at any number of other Atlanta restaurants. We will never waste our time or money at Avra again.

My friends and I went to Avra for their Thursday Night Ladies Night. Justin was wonderful and the General Manager - Scott was so tentive. We had the best time out in a very longtime. There was a great mix of people. The atmosphere was relaxed and enjoyable. The food was sssooooo delicious and flavorful. We love the "flaming cheese". We can not wait to go next week. Way to go Avra.

Bartender Juston makes you feel incredibly welcome and has some great stories to share.

I visited Avra this past weekend with a large party. They were short staffed on a Friday night, so we were glad to cut them some slack. We waited about an hour before our orders were taken. There were two large tables in our party (about 15 people eating), and one table was served appetizers before the other table's drink order was taken. Our meal took 2.5 hours total. Overall, service was terrible. The manager was courteous, but made excuses instead of rectifying our problems. The food was good, but I doubt any of us will be back. A major disappointment.

My parents came to town for a play and we discovered Avra by accident. By the end of our meal, we could not believe how fortunate we were to have discovered this restaurant. We wanted a light meal so we ordered a couple of the "platter" appetizers and everything was fantastic. The wine list was great and our server was knowledgeable enough to notice that the wine we ordered was too cold and got a different bottle. We ordered one of the cheese dishes - more for the ouzo flaming than the cheese - and were delighted with the results. The micro-desserts were also delicious and perfectly portioned. We can't wait to go back!!

I will make this short and sweet considering my computer messed up after writing this the first time. Great restaurant. The people and service are remarkable. Couldn't have asked for a nicer waitress, and staff. The Avra building is an old house turned into a restaurant, so the setting is very relaxing. I was impressed with the food for the price. I hate to say it, but Kyma offers more authentic and more delicious Greek food, but it just so happens that the price for Kyma is higher. You get what you pay for is what I am trying to say. I was impressed with the appetizers. My girlfriend and I had the pita bread with Greek spreads. Very good, but also very heavy so watch out. Also, we had the spinach puffs. Spinach and cheesy in a flaky pastry. Pretty good, but subordinate to that of Kyma's. The lamb chops were good, but not fall apart in your mouth good. My girlfriends lamb, and rice(I believe it was rice, if not some other type of grain) was excellent. The lamb in her dish fell apart in my mouth and was excellent. The dessert was nothing to wet my pants about. The lakamatas at Kyma are ridiculous. I recommend Kyma if you want top-notch Greek food, I recommend Avra if you want decently priced and decent tasting Greek food. The restaurant deserves its 7.8 out of 10. It is definitely worth your time and money.

We were in town for a conference and ate at Avra, a decision based mostly on positive web reviews. The internet served me well! We loved our experience at Avra.

The restaurant is in a restored older house, and the dining rooms are very romantic and pretty. More importantly, the food was fabulous! Fresh, tasty, and not greasy as Greek food sometimes can be. Service was great as well -- attentive, pleasant, and professional. We enjoyed the wide selection of Greek wines, and even the option of a few Greek beers! Our food was so good that we decided to return to Avra the next night, too, for our final meal in Atlanta.

We wish we had Avra in Raleigh!

I decided to take my practice out Saturday night for some Greek food since half of my staff is Greek. I wanted to take them to an authentic Greek eatery so I asked around and Avra was the new place to dine. From the flaming cheese to the 9 bottles of wine for 8 people was nothing but mere perfection!!! Our waiter was as authentic as the food! I believe his name was klotmoulisakoulis if I remember correctly. I am not to familiar with Greek food but I loved it! I would like to share with everyone that the food tasted gourmet to me but we all remember how good the wine was.
Take some time to visit this Greeek restaurant- it's sooooo worth it!!!!!!!!!!!!

Went here with the family and the Greek girlfriend, and wow, the place looks great. We sat on the patio, but it was honestly less comfortable than we would have been inside.
The food was a nice selection, including some things we'd not seen at other local Greek places. The end result was just 'okay' in most cases - nothing grabbed your attention, or took advantage of the subtle flavors of Greek cuisine.

I have heard of this "Avra Greek Restaurant" through my work collegues and had to take them up on their word of "Great Eats"! I dined for my first time last Saturday night and was immediatley greeted with a greek waiter with one eye brow. I thought it was fake. Perhaps used to create authenticity but as soon as he greated out party of 6 I new he was of decent. We immediately devoured the flaming Greek cheese. It was un-describable!! I had then recieved my fish which was de-boned tableside. Again, more flavor in this fish than the flaming cheese. Hands down the food and service in this restaurant was PERFECT!!!!!!!
The entire table fell in love with this place and we will be back this Saturday with the family!

1. The waiter was somewhat hostile to my group.
2. The food tasted like the food at the tourist places in Greece - not nearly as good as it could be.
3. This REALLY annoyed me: the drinks were heavily watered down. I know this because ouzo, a greek drink, is clear unless you add water; then it turns white. We ordered shots with ice on the side and the ouzo was already white when it came. Besides denying me the pleasure of showing my friends the color change with the ice, it made me feel ripped off.

Atmosphere is good - a live traditional band helps a lot - but I cannot recommend Avra.

I have never had Greek food before. Wow! How do you spell fresh? Avra. How do you spell tasty? Avra. This was one of the best dining experiences I had in a long time. Service was great! Food was fantastic and the ambience was suitable for a Greek Goddess. Can't wait to go back! PS, great wine list too!

Perfect alternative to the pre-existing Greek taverns/restaurants around town. Not super expensive, not too bright, just perfect. The atmosphere is chic and not pretentious. I went on a Thursday and sat at the bar for their 1/2 priced appetizers- good deal. If you order the combo platter, it's enough for 2 people to dine and it's elegantly served. The crowd is 30+. The bartender fun as she got us all in the mood to have ouzo! Romantic, for friends, or for business.
