I really love this place, they have so many great people in this place, and they have great food in here to during the night. I think this place is just jamming.

I've been here a couple times with some Canadian friends, and each time has been great. There's a great atmosphere here, and not the people aren't pretentious like other places in Houston.

I was glad to see the Maple Leaf toping the list of bars in Houston. I can't agree more! This is the best place to go out with a group of friends and talk to others at the bar. Great staff....hodge podge of people there that usually aren't pretending to be too cool. And for some reason I always walk out sauced and a nice hangover in the morning = good time in my book!

Not for people who want to go to a packed bar hearing house music all night.

Pros: What a bar should be

Cons: its a Canadian bar!!!! ;0)

For all you hockey fans, this is the place to be! Hockey is on all the time during the season and there are plenty of TVs to catch up on the score.Bar layout is nice with ample seating and a small patio out to the side. It's has a good cheers feel to it that comes with a dependable regular crowd. Scottie is one of the best bartenders I've met and the service there is top notch. They have a good jukebox, two dart boards and some golden tee action. They also have their very own penalty box in case you get too frisky for your own good! Never had a bad time going to the Leaf and recommend this place to anybody looking for a good time.

I have some friends that live in the Calais directly across the street from "The Leaf" as they call it. Would rate 4.5...For a Friday night I noticed the following...individual tables with 4-5 people playing board games, chatting it up, generaly having a good time. Others seemed to be regulars at the bar, we opted to throw some darts. Stells Artois was served in corresponding glass (nice touch) and promptly, I might add by their only male server at the time.

Was checked on throughout the night but not bothered...would def. go back during the week or on Friday in a small group. Oh, and despite what I've read previously, tv's were numerous with good picture. May have been San Jose Sharks night with highights from the mid 90's, but good picture nevertheless. Full size windows rock imo. Free take home Stella glass next time??

Pros: Location, Windows, Service

Cons: none during the week or the occasional Friday night

Great Neighborhood Pub. The bartenders obviously know their stuff. Late night pizza offering is the best.
I have never had problems fitting or getting on the patio myself, but hey - maybe they can go roof-top.
My fav bartender Jenna is the best. We love her !! Just an all around leave your attitude at the door and hang out bar - that's what I'm talking about.

Pros: Great casual neighborhood bar

Cons: parking - what else is new in mid-town and they atleast have a parking lot

.

This is easily my favorite bar in Houston. It's very non-assuming and completely comfortable. You fit in if you're wearing a suit and tie or if you chilling in shorts. The bartender always remembers my drink order even if it's been a while since my previous visit. The mixed drinks are stout and are moderately priced considering the bar is located in midtown.

I was really disheartened to read a few of the reviews. I am not related to the owner, but I have visited the Maple Leaf Pub many times during the hockey season. I was so ecstatic last year to find out that there is an actual hockey bar in Houston. I made a couple of new friends there and even ran into some old friends. The staff is always friendly and the service is wonderful! The owner is a really great guy too!

I would venture to guess that this bitter Lance guy probably doesn't get many dates. For the other amoeba who dissed on Canadians, well, he's got issues.

Go there and have fun!

Well, hockey games only have 3 stars, so that will have to do for now. Besides, just made my first visit prior to the Aeros game 1/23. Alas it was the all star break and the lame Rockets were throwing another one away. The Labatt Blues were nice and cold, and $3.50 is a bargain compared to the $7-8 at the Toyota Center. Selection of other brews was impressive, I'll have some of my other faves from home next time. Being alone, I sat at the bar and can see the point about the limited view if not all screens are on the same channel.
Crowd was sparse, but seemed to be having a good time despite the absence of hockey to watch(is that possible?) I was fortunate and met a charming young Canadian couple and we chatted about home.
I have the NHL Center Ice package, so I seldom venture out during the season, but I may bring a hockey newbie around for the ambiance.
A pleasant first experience.

Pros: Convenient location for me

Cons: None readily apparent in a first visit

I've actually been here many times because it is the only way for me to follow my favorite hockey team. Nevertheless, this place has not shown any signs of improvement over that time. The jukebox has a bunch of old CDs in it. The music is not loud enough. Most of the other customers are old men. The gender ratio is usually about 9 males for every female (and that one female is usually unattractive anyway). The drinks are overpriced. It is at a noisy intersection. If all that weren't bad enough, there's one bartender named Amanda who has a serious attitude problem.
If it were possible, I would give this place no stars.
Oh yeah, I've begun listening to my favorite hockey team's games on the internet instead of coming here.

I've been here a handful of times, and have had nothing but a good time every time. I only require a friendly staff, plenty of beers to choose from, decent prices and no pretention. So far, so good!

I love the maple leaf my husband and I were there over the weekend to watch NHL playoffs, and we popped in last night with a group of friends. I love the friendly atmosphere it is definitely not like the other bars in midtown. Scott and the other staff rock they are always so friendly and really go out of their way to make you feel welcome. On busy nights you have to understand that you are not the only patron at the bar, and you may have to wait a few minutes for a drink, but that's the case at any bar when it's busy. The staff always seems to work very hard on busy nights to make sure eveyone gets taken care of. As for other reviews talking about the TV setup I really don't understand what they're talking about they have 5 very nice large plasma TVs and I've never had a problem seeing any TV when I've been there. I have to give kudos to the owners for making it such a relaxing comfortable friendly environment!

I've been to the Maple Leaf Pub several times because I'm a huge college hockey and NHL fan. On weekday nights when the bar isn't as packed, service is usually average. That is, if you are ready for a fresh drink/refill, you can either order one from the bar with minimal wait or catch the attention of a wandering staff and place your order. However, on any given weekend, all bets are off. First, the bar gets extremely packed. So, attempting to get the attention of someone behind the bar warrants the use of rescue flares. Next, the presence of any staff on the floor checking on the patrons is nearly non-existent. It's ashame, MLP is one of the few pubs in Houston that offers so many Canadian brews, yet it's very trying to just place order to get one. With more bar staff and waitresses, MLP would be much approved.

Updated: I spent much of the Stanley Cup Playoffs at the MLP and the service has clearly improved since my previous outings there. The bar staff was on top of their game and kept all of us hockey fans satisfied. Great job, MLP! Thanks for hosting a great NHL playoff season. See you next season!

me and a few friends go out two to three times a month to try out different spots and thought that The Maple Leaf Pub looked like a good place to go. (well we were wrong) the atmospher of this place seemed really nice, there are board games to play and the staff seemed friendly enough. all was good untill we got ready to pay the tab and leave......... my friends boyfriend went to the bar to close us out and me and my friend went outside. when he came out he was pis*ed, the tab was $30 for 3 drinks and no they were'nt even top shelf. my friends boyfriend had a beer she had a s*x on the beach and I a long island ice tea or for better words a glass of ice water because thats what it tasted like. my friends drink was bearly biggiger than a shot, I know s*x on the beach can be either a shot or a drink but we asked for the drink and not the shot two sips and she was done. back to the tab... the blond at the bar charged us for each shot she put in the drink WTF? we were at a pub not the hilton. when we left I called the pub back and asked how much thier long islands were and i was told $7 when i told the man how much we were charged i didnt even have to tell him our name he already knew. Hmmm??? well he said he would refund the difference which was cool but why were we over charged in the first place dont this place train there employees befor the let them interact with the customers? was it because we didnt look like her average clintel ? or was it because she was running short on cash and needed some extra gas money????? who knows and who cares she knew what she was doing and it was not right if you dont fit this pubs " class of people " then i would not recommend it. would never go again.

BAD! BAD! BAD!.I, my boyfriend and a friend of ours went to the maple leaf on May 10. We just wanted to have a few drinks and relax. The place looked nice and we did like the atmosphere. My boyfriend ordered a beer which is the only drink you should order. I ordered a "S*x on the Beach" which the bartender must not have known how to make. She gave me a shot of a drink. You can google this drink (which I did before I wrote this) and see how the drink should be made. My friend got a long island ice tea and she said she didn't like it either. But you know what. We weren't really mad, we just didn't order any more and just hung out. We just thought this is not a place to order mix drinks from. No biggie. So all we ordered was one beer, and 2 mix drinks. My boyfriend went to go take care of the bill. It came up to $30. WTF? The bartender was charging for every item that was in the mixed drinks. The beer was $4.00 and my drink was may be $10.00 and the long island was $16.00. My boyfriend asked her if she was serious about the bill and she just smiled and said yes. He paid and said some words and left. My friend & I were in the parking lot waiting and he told us about it. We were really in shock. Part of us felt we just got suckered and maybe this happen because we didn't ask how much the drinks were gonna be before we orderd. My friend called the place up and asked how much was a long island. the guy who answer said $7.00 and then she told him we just left and were changed $30. He must have looked at the bill and said "oh , were are going to refund you $13.50. I do not believe this was a mistake and our checks were confused with someone elses. This bartender did this on purpose. Why were we singled out? We weren't drunk and acting stupid. She just really thought she could rip us off. Maybe pocket some of the money. I do know we were the only latinos there. But I don't want to play the race card. But just stating the fact. Do not go to this place.

I have not yet visited but I heard about this through another hockey fan and then read the review from Htowncoog. I now rate this place as a 5, I was planning on catching the Fri/Sat night playoff games but have been motivated to go tonight. You can watch the rockets at any bar or restaurant, people who have passion for the game of hockey need a place to enjoy a game, and I found it. I gained some serious respect from the response given. Look forward to the experience tonight.

I was there to watch the hometown Rockets play the Jazz in the playoffs and to my surprise when I got there, only one tv was tuned into the Rockets game and the rest were showing Dallas Hockey. Ok, I get it, this is a "canadian" bar so of course because it's a "canadians" bar, if they show anything else besides hockey it wouldn't be a "canadian" bar right? Those "canadians" must all be stereotypical one cell-brain creatures who can't appreciate anything besides hockey i take it *sarcasm*.

Let's get a few things straight. If you're going to proclaim yourself as a sports bar, the first and foremost thing you should do is put the local teams ahead of whatever gimmick you're trying to use to set yourself apart. To show DALLAS in a meaningless game on the main TV's and speakers when the Rockets are playing for their playoff survival is just dis-respectful to the hometown team. I suppose if the Texans or astros were in the playoffs, you'd show hockey too right? maybe it should have been a clue to you to put the rockets on the main screen when you saw most of the bar was watching and cheering for the rockets. (the two drunk guys with dallas jersey's don't count).

Let's get another thing straight. In reality, you only have 2 plasma TV's because only two are visible if you're not at the bar and hidden. the other side needs at least two more. Speaking of these plasma's, you might as well put up that old ugly console TV your parents had from the 80's because you aren't showing the games in HD. All you're doing is getting the standard 480i signal and stretching the picture. How hard is it to call up the cable or the dish people and tell them "hi, we have a "sports bar" and would like to have the HD receiver so our 'canadian' customers can enjoy their Dallas hockey in HD"?

Last, a 'canadian' bar should have more canadian beer on tap. This place has potential and the staff are nice, and the place is clean, but you can't dis the local teams.

Cool sports bar. We went there last night to watch hockey. They have several flat-panel TVs mounted on the walls, several choices of draft beer as well as lots of bottled beer and mixed drinks. There are dart boards and a hockey game machine and some coin operated touch screens to play between events. I'll be back to the Maple Leaf Pub.

First and foremost, I have always received the best service from the bartenders at the Maple Leaf, particularly Curtis. He has only served me twice and I still remember his name. They are all attentive, prompt, friendly, and all around just memorable bartenders. The juke box RULES. It is a roomy bar with interesting, friendly patrons. Dart boards didn't hurt, either. However, I want my emphasis to remain on the service. I feel like it's the most determining factor no matter where you are. Let's put it this way- I will keep filling out applications until I get to work alongside those people!

My boyfriend and I discovered this place in March of 2007. It's become our favorite place to hang out and enjoy a pint (or two, or three!). Sean (the owner) and his wife couldn't be nicer, and we've certainly become regulars. It's also one of the only places in town with Woodchuck Amber on tap, and that certainly doesn't hurt.

Pros: Parking, great staff, clean restrooms

Cons: Needs an internet jukebox for more variety

.

Maple Leaf is one of my favorite places to hang out. The bartenders are friendly and helpful. The TV's are perfectly perched above the bar so that you don't have to crane your neck. The jukebox is awesome with a wide variety of music that is not too loud. The people that frequent this pub are not snobby but are polished and professional looking. Yes, there is not a kitchen on the premises but hey, eat before you go out. If you are really hungry the bartenders have a bunch of menus they will give you. I like that the Maple Leaf is chilled out and comfortable every time I have been there. I am one of the rare Houston born hockey fans and the best part of the pub is the hockey motif and a chance to swap hockey stories, etc. I will recommend the Maple Leaf every chance I get! Good job, guys!

Pros: Cool people, good atmosphere, HOCKEY

Cons: No kitchen....but no biggie

Being a Buffalo/Niagara Falls native, it's hard to find a place down here to catch a Sabres game. This is the first and only bar I've found in Houston to meet the needs or a big hockey fan. Notice I said "bar" and not "night club" because thats exactly what it is. Its a place where friends can get together and relax and get a little rowdy from time to time. Great TV's, great music, and the best beer selection in Houston (the only place I've found in Texas to carry Labatt Blue on tap!). I've been up there for almost every Sabres playoff game and everytime I go, there's always a great crowd in there (a lot of crazy Sabres fans like me) and everyone is extremely friendly. One of the best staffs at any bar I've been to. All the bartenders and waitresses are extremely friendly and helpful. The management is very warming and hospitable to thier guest. They go above and beyond what any bar owners should. The only downfall I can find with the place is that they don't have a kitchen. However, with Late Nite Pie and Gotham Pizza right nearby, they management has no problem with bringin in outside food (very hard to come by at any bar these days). Keep up the great work guys. I'm sure I'll be there even if there is no hockey on TV. Tell Scott to keep the Sabres gear on year round!

Pros: Too much to mention

Cons: No kitchen

My wife and I being from Kingston Ontario had heard about the pub and were looking for a good opportunity to check the place out, and what a better opportunity than to watch the Sens play the Devils. We were hoping for and expecting an electric atmosphere full of, if not Ottawa fans, then at least hockey fans. Upon entering the establishment, other than a table of three and the bar tender, the place was empty. As for being able to accommodating sport fans, 3 poorly placed and small plasma TVs. The music being played was a mix of older hip-hop, grunge and metal, all being played too loud to communicate with others. The bar tender was accommodating, but certainly not interested. I?m not sure what?s Canadian about this pub but after 15 minutes we left to spend some time at the Fox and Hound in the Woodlands, and were able to catch the beginning of the game and have a great evening. On the bright side, if you?re looking for an easy place to park, the ML has it nailed.

The last person with the stupid review. You have realize that you do not live in a Hockey town ... SO with that being said sometimes when big sporting events are going on you may not get to watch Hockey. In order for a bar to survive in Houston they have to sometimes show the BIGGER games.

Your comment about the waitress ... YOU ARE A SERIOUS LOSER! That is ALL I will say about that one ... trust me you will figure it out one day!
This bar rocks, the TVs are great (especially now that there is sound), selection of great music, great staff, & more. Thanks guys! ;o)

When I first found out about this place, I was pretty excited to have at last found and honest-to-goodness hockey bar in a city that really doesn't seem to know what ice is. So, on a Friday night I headed down there to watch some NCAA tournament hockey and my Colorado Avalanche, who were in a desperate race to make the playoffs. Upon entering the jukebox was blaring Alice in Chains, score one for the bar. I sat down at the bar and saw that 2 of the 5 TVs were showing basketball. 2 goals against the bar. I don't care if it's "March Madness" or the damn basketball championship of the universe- if you bill yourself as a "hockey bar," you'd better not have 40% of your screens showing basketball instead of hockey. One could go to about 500 other bars and watch basketball.
Three of the 5 tvs are sorta crammed up above the bar with very limited sight lines (another goal against, the bar now down 3-1). Watching the end of Notre Dame v. Alabama Birmingham (score one for the bar) I peruse the jukebox, which is pretty darn good, and contains, of all things, Mudhoney. Score one for the bar (now tied at 3).
Anyway, I ask the bartender whether they will show the Avalanche game, and she gets kinda snippy and asks me if I want her to turn it on. "No," i think,"I don't really want to watch the game I just asked you about." Score 2 against the bar-one for the snippy (pregnant?) bartender, and one because I had to ask them to turn on an important NHL game at a so-called "hockey" bar. Now the score is 5-3 against. "Yes," I say, "please turn it on." So, the bartender disappears, re-appears, and 20 minutes later my game is still not on. Another goal against, with the bar now down 6-3. I pay my tab and leave. Bar loses 6-3.
Bottom line is hockey bars have to show hockey. You can watch basketball anywhere. Patrons shouldn't have to tell the bar to turn on a hockey game. Bartenders shouldn't get snippy then fail to turn on a game after you ask them nicely.

Just began frequenting this bar not too long ago. Every single review written below is absolutely correct- the place is great! My girlfriend is a northerner very much into hockey. After going here a couple of times, she has converted me towards a real liking of the sport. Very friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Highly recommended. Didn't even think to order in while there until reading the review below, but now we plan to attend even more, especially to see the games. There really is a good selection of music and the staff is fantastic. Good location.

I stopped in and found it very clean, good beer selection and the help very good. The patrons were very talkative and friendly, thus the bar has a good feel. Of course, hockey being on TV is always good. I'm waiting to see aforementioned "hot" help however. I am definitely going to recommend this place to friends.

Come here for darts, draft beers, and good times. One caveat, there is no kitchen onsite. You will need to have dinner before coming to the pub or take advantage of their delivery menus (I reccommend ordering from the pizza place next door - they deliver quickly and the pizza is fantastic). I've had some great times here watching sports (hockey is preferred at the Maple Leaf, suprise!) and playing darts with a big groups of friends. Also, the bartender is very friendly and doesn't leave you with an empty glass!

Love this place. Great crowd and staff. My ONLY complaint would be that they don't have a good representation of Canadian beers. Labatt's is not representative of a country which takes GREAT pride in their beer.

What I wouldn't give for Kokanee, Big Rock Trad or Warthog, hell.... even a Keith's would make me exceedingly happy.

Please please please please find a way to bring a little big of home to us.

I love this bar!! I love it all, everybody is friendly and the specials are great! I love how they cater to the Service industry as I am a bartender and work all weekend! Ryan is the BEST, just do not ask him for a pack of matches, he might make you come up with a funny quote to write on the match book...You do not get what I mean? That means you need to go in!! I love that fact that they have blue moon on tap with, FRESH orange slices!! They keep the Shots cold and the shot glasses even colder!!! :) I love the "cheers" feel this place gets, i have made some good buddies since going there, I love it!! SO do not forget.. The leaf it is a great place to go by yourslef or with a group!

Wow. I love this bar. I have heard that it is too clean, and the bartenders are friendly, but what's wrong with that. Amanda and Ryan are soooo hot! Everything about this place rocks! Especially the "waiter weekend" They practically give the drinks away if your in the service industry (on sun-tue). But whatever happened to that chick with the glasses?

This is a great new bar in midtown. I wasn't very familiar with Canadian beers and the bartender was very patient in explaining and allowing me to taste a few before deciding. The staff is always really friendly. The place is very clean while still having a comfortable Montrose feel- not like other trendy midtown bars. Great jukebox, spotless bathrooms.

What a great place to catch a beer after work or take your friends to see a few games. Just roomy enough to have some space to yourself without being in a cavernous club. Jukebox selections were great and there wasn't a seat in the house without a view of the games on the giant televisions. Prices were average for your neighborhood bar, but much less than most of the other places in midtown. The best part - they have a parking lot!! We will be back.

I have been pleasantly surprised by this new bar. The jukebox is great, nice beer selection, clean atmosphere, and friendly staff. I would say the crowd tends to be in the 30+ range, but there is a good variety of types of folk.
