1 Stars: terrible service - Jacky the hostess (by barellan)

I called the restaurant to place an order for pick up but tell them that their website is down and so I can not see the menu online. Jacky, the hostess that answered the phone, tells me that the menu is on the website, completely ignoring what I had just told her moments before. I try to explain to her again that the website is down but I would like to order a roll with eel and avocado and all of a sudden the phone is passed to another worker at the restaurant. I asked why I was transferred and the worker is just as clueless as I am and replies, "I don't know, Jacky just handed me the phone and walked away". What kind of business are these people running? Seriously.

5 Stars: I love this place! (by eel1013)

I am surprised to see the reviews below! I have had nothing but great experiences at Sage 400. The staff is very friendly and fun. The manager has always been very outgoing and personable to my husband and I. The barstaff is awesome as well. The food is the freshest sushi in Houston. I recommend this restaurant to anyone who asks me for a good sushi place and I frequent there about once a week. I recommend checking the place out for yourself as you will not be disappointed.

4 Stars: Best Sushi in Town (by david1002)

I've been going to Sage 400 ever since I moved to town a few months ago. I have been a fan of sushi for over 10 years now and the sushi at sage is some of the best sushi I've ever had. The yellow tail appetizer with jalapenos was very tasty, you have to try it. I also had the scorpion and raw beef roll, both were very good and full of flavor. I would recommend Sage 400 to any sushi lover.

5 Stars: Great Sushi (by roberetmeyers)

I finally had a chance to go to Sage 400, I had heard good things about the sushi from friends. I was very impressed by the food. The sushi was excellent. I was also suprised to see that they had a full menu of cooked items like New York strips, Lamb Chops and Salmon. The seabass appetizer was incredible, it was baked and topped with a citrus sauce. Sage 400 is the best sushi I've had in Houston.

2 Stars: 400 Elitists (by KNSchiller)

Ok...so Ladies Night on a Friday...looking forward to a nice dinner at what was supposed to be a nice sushi restaurant in Houston. ABSOLUTELY NOT! A restaurant is more than the food...which by the way was mediocre at best. This restaurant staff appears to be a group of elitists who just want you to eat and move on so they can fill that table with another $300 tab. A woman, who appeared to be a manager, stood behingdour table at one point in the night, staring at us, and did not even drop by the table to extend a greeting. "Elitist" is the best term I can think of to describe this restaurant. There are much better sushi restaurants in Houston worth checking out...leave this one to the Blue Bloods!

1 Stars: Not worth the expense!! (by jyd1)

I have been to this restaurant twice with plenty of time between the first and second experience. The food experience has not changed that much. For mediocre food, it was not worth what we paid. Service in general was good both times but the food was simply okay- an upgrade from our first time, which was simple terrible. I did enjoy their edamame hummus. The only reason to visit this restaurant is to take advantage of their happy hour menu and prices. We were lucky enough to make it in before it was over- which helped to alleviate their pricey regular menu items. I agree with the other reviewer about bypassing this place and heading straight to Miyakos.

1 Stars: overpriced sushi, bad customer service (by sagesucks)

Horrible place!

being my first time at the restaurant i decided to sit at the sushi bar, everything was good, not too many people, but somehow the sushi manager was obviously upset, i sat infront of him, so i could have a better look at the plates that were coming out, i ordered some nigiri, a california roll, mizo soup, and a fire dragon roll, first they brought the mizo soup, i was almost finishing it, when at the botton of my bowl plate i saw a strand of hair, clearly disgusted by the incident i call my waitress, she apologized and offer to give me another bowl of mizo soup, i said no, and told her that i would like to speak with the manager, she told me that she was attending business call and that she would stop by when she finished, everything else was good, the fire dragon roll, was good, but wayy to spicy, the nigiri had too much wasabi underneath it, my mouth was burining, i had to flag down my waiter everytime i wanted something because all the waiters were too busy joking and eating on the kitchen, (i saw them!!) the last straw was when my california roll came in, it wasn't even a roll, the crab stick was sticking out, not even well wrapped, i was like are they serious? when i asked for my paycheck, i heard angie (the owner) yelling at the sushi chef about some houston chronicle review, now that i read it, i can see why! exactly the same worst experience i had, totally disapointing, i preffer to take my 40 dollars and go to miyako, wouldn't recommend it to anyone! wayy to pricy

5 Stars: Sage 400 is fantastic! What are you all talking about? (by Tonigirl45)

I am very shocked to read the other reviews. Sage 400 is our favorite go-to restaurant. I have never seen the management rude to anyone. The food is fresh and inventive, the atmoshere hip, but relaxing....They do get very busy, but you can call ahead and reserve a table. Please do not be discouraged. There are some people who can never be pleased. Sage is fantastic! Give it a try.

2 Stars: Just below average Sushi. Awful service. (by szaman)

I came to this place with my family fully realizing that whenever you go to a Sushi joint for the first time you are taking a big chance. I had a Fire roll which was good. Yet, the whole time my mouth was burning because our waiter never brought us any water the entire time. The Spicy Tuna roll we ordered was so terrible that 2 people couldn't force themselves to finish it. The menu is really "blah" and there's nothing really special on it. We ended up with an $85 bill for a Fire roll, Spicy Tuna roll and 2 Bento boxes. Had the food been good I wouldn't have minded, but for such awful food I was extremely upset. We will never come back to this place ever again.

1 Stars: We're never going back! (by jazzalexa04)

The service here was horrible. We got there at 9:30 pm on a weeknight and felt like we were getting kicked out the minute we walked in. The food was not worth the bad service and is tremendously over-priced in relation to its quality. Do not be fooled by the chic and loungy atmosphere like we were!

1 Stars: terrible service (by luvmesumwine)

My friend and I decided to go to Sage on Friday after work to relax and enjoy some good sushi and a bottle of wine. Sushi was decent, but the whole experience went downhill when halfway through our bottle of wine, the waitress ask us if we were ready for our check. All I could think was WHAAAATTTTTTTT????? Are you kidding me? So you see us still drinking our wines and our bottle was still halfway full and you ask us if we were ready for our check? But we finally figure it out that it was a friday night and the bar was full of people waiting for tables and the manager lady kept glaring over at our table as she said something to our waitress. So our waitress came over and asked if we were done again within 5 min of asking the last time. We politely told her 'No' and as a matter of fact would like to order more food. She didn't seem to be too enthusiastic that we were doing so but managed to take the chicken entree order. The chicken dish came out surprisingly fast. And when we bit into it we figured out why! It wasn't finished cooking! This is no place to come to enjoy a meal. Their customer service skills are old school...people don't care for a place with just good food anymore...it's more about the experience. And I definitely had the worst one here!!

2 Stars: The Manager/Owner is Enough to Keep You Away (by foodie133)

Used to love the place, but have made a vow to never return. On two separate occassions she has sent our waiters over to "invite us to their bar area". Translation "get the heck out of here so we can seat someone else". I understand idea behind it, but not five minutes after you've finished your food. When I told her that we didn't appreciate the treatment she basically told me to go to hell. The final straw was when I went in with a gift certificate I received from work friends. She claimed that it was no good and that I had to call the people who gave it to me and have them call the restaurant. After almost a 45 minute wait she was finally able to locate the the records and allowed me to leave with the food. No offer of a comp or even an apology for the mixup. If she isn't the owner whoever is should fire her. Other than that the sushi is great!!!

3 Stars: Sushi great, service not so much (by cherynp)

The evening started off on a high note. We knew there would be 3 of us for dinner with possibly a 4th joining. The policy at Sage 400 is to only seat fully parties (which I completely agree with). We asked for a table for 3 but explained our situation and the hostess gave us a banquet for 4 anyway, which was really nice (especially as we did end up being 4). We immediately ordered drinks and when the waiter asked for the food order, we told him we hadn't even had a chance to look. That was probably where we went wrong. For the remainder of the 3 hours we were there, we had to either flag down our waiter (when we could locate him) or ask the hostess to get him for us. This was really a shame as the food was excellent. Among the highlights were the Agedashi Tofu (perfectly cooked), the Raw Beef Roll (beautiful and delicious) and the Rainbow Roll (perfectly presented). I had high hopes for this restaurant, as it was recommended by a friend with great taste, but this incredible lack of service in a restaurant with only 20 tables really detracted from the experience.

5 Stars: 5 Star Evening (by alaskansurfer)

After my last sushi fiasco at Miyako's on Westheimer the next sushi experience was only up from there. Sage 400 didnt disappoint and turned out a 5 star evening. The evening started out well, with being seated right away and immediately served water, which seems to be an afterthougt these days. Our waitress was friendly, welcoming and looking to accommodate. Our choices were the hot rock beaf (Angus), salmon roe, Spider Roll (soft shell crab), esocolar and salmon sashimi followed by Mochi Ice Cream. All the dishes were fresh and very delicious. The waitress was conscious of the timing when the items were served and let us know the kitchen was closing and asked if wanted to order additional items. She was kind enough to set aside the Mochi ice cream after the kitchen had closed and when I accidently spilled my drink, luckily no one got wet, she was good enough to refill my drink without charge. Any place has its good and bad nights, but every time I've chosen Sage 400 I've consistently left very pleased.

3 Stars: Would be the best place in town if they respected customers more (by texas_flood)

The place has great atmosphere, a good bar, and delicious food. Sushi quality is quite good, easily among the best in Houston. There are many interesting cooked entrees and appetizers. A la carte tempura is a nice idea too! They might recommend Red River roll but I find that the pepper and the chili paste obliterate the flavor of the fish and the rice. Other than that, I am pretty impressed with the food! I do have to say that service is subpar. It goes beyond a lack of concern for customer satisfaction. I wouldn't go so far as to say that they have contempt for the customers, but it's pretty close to that. Every time I've been there, the hostess of the evening disrespected me or someone in my party. Waiters and servers tend to do a good enough job during meal time but are in a hurry with the bill. Essentially, you tend get a slapp on the face when you walk in and just before you leave, but a pleasant meal in between. In the short run it might be easy to puff yourself up as the elite sushi restaurant by being snobby to the customers, but I don't see the point. We pay good money to be there and we appreciate the food. They should be doing what they can to make it an enjoyable experience. It is very easy to treat customers with respect and appreciation. The hard part is the food, the decor, getting a good supplier, etc.. they do such a good job of that, so I don't understand why they put no effort into how they treat customers. They might get away with it while they are one of the newer places in town, but that won't last forever. This would be the best upscale sushi spot in town if they didn't manage to agitate me (and many others, apparently) on every visit.

1 Stars: Vip seating? (by jgjgjgj)

I went to Sage 400 yesterday, against my friends suggestions and the very bad reviews i've read here.
We were a party of 4, being our first time here we asked the hostess if we could seat in one of the big round booths, the hostess said that those booths we for 5 or more, we looked at one of the big booths and there were a party of 3 seated in one of them, we asked the hostess that if the booths were for 5 or more how come there were 3 persons seating in one big booth, she started stuttering and went to ask the sushi manager if we could seat at one of the booths, the manager Teddy came over and said that we could not seat in the booths and said that those booths were for reservations for big parties, so we agreed to seat in one of the tables right beside the booth, it must have been 30 mins when we saw a couple get seated at the middle booth, my friend got up and asked the hostess that if those booths were reserved for big parties how come she sat a couple at one of the booths, she didn't knew what to say, and when we were about to finish we saw a party of 4 ppl get seated on the only big booth left, the manager angie came to them and we clearly heard her say " oh anything for you, you are big spenders in this restaurant and you know me so no problem" me and my friends felt snubbed, and intimidated and bullied by the fact that we were not seated in one of the big booths because we were not VIP, we asked the manag er to come over by our table and she said blamed the hostess when all of us obviously heard her, all of asudden she got an attitude and basically kicked us out by saying "I'm very sorry for all of this but if you want to leave you can" she basically kicked us out!!! she's right WE ARE NEVER COMING BACK, i should have spent 300 on another restaurant that doesn't discriminate ppl by not being big spenders, i don't recomend this restaurant to anyone!!!! the sushi is not that great for 300 bill,

5 Stars: The BEST in Houston; NO Equal (by Houstone)

I've dined here at least twice a month, every month over the last two years, and always, always had a fantastic experience.
The menu is creative, and ingredients always super fresh. If you are feeling adventurous, try the raw beef roll, my favorite, or the Miso Sea Bass, the best I have ever had.
The atmosphere is hip, upscale and relaxed, with really neat booths and a private area off of the bar that I and friends have had the pleasure of dining in on many occasions, without having to pay extra for it, like some other more pretentious spots in Houston.

5 Stars: Best Sushi in town (by JasonParks)

I recently moved to the galleria area and was looking to find a sushi place close by. I have been a big fan of sushi for a long time and have eaten at sushi restaurants all over the country. I tried Uptown and Ra to my disappointment, then one of my friends told me about Sage 400. I gave it a shot and to my surprise it was some of the best sushi I had ever had. My waiter suggested I try the yellow tail appetizer, it was yellow tail thinly sliced with jalapenos and cilantro and it was excellent. I also had the Red River roll that was topped with pepper tuna and avacado and the Scorpion roll that had shrimp tempura and crab meat. I was very impressed with both rolls and I was excited to see thier menu also included items like New York Strips, Lamb Chops and all kinds of cooked appetizers like Chilean sea bass. For me that is a big plus because its sometimes hard for me to get my friends to aggree on sushi. I enjoyed Sage 400 very much and cant wait to go back.

1 Stars: Excuse Me? (by teknein)

You would think that two bottles of Dom Perignon later,
the waitress would pay you a little more courtesy.

No.

The management is sweet.

I usually have a decent time going to Sage.
Considering that I will only go there to buy a bottle of champagne and sit down.

The most unprofessional sushi chef I have EVER encountered!!
I asked the waitress to tell him to make a vegetarian roll--OTHER than Futomaki.

But oh!
What do I get??
Futomaki with Tamago on it.

I'm sitting there thinking...
Is this guy serious?
I call the management out, I tell her what happened.
She marches me to the sushi bar--where the chef is GLARING at me.

Honestly, he should've been fired a long time ago.

Anyway.

The owner apologized.

But they charged me for the sushi anyway?

Regardless.

I almost feel like she tried to care, but forgot to.

I don't go to Sage 400 anymore.

I'll drive the ten minutes and go to Richshaw instead.

3 Stars: Nice Atmosphere... sushi is ok, but I've had better... (by lola517)

The place is nice for a date or to have dinner with friends. It's in a great location, but the sushi was disappointing. The volcano roll was over-powered by the sauce they used and the california roll tasted fishy....

4 Stars: Good Lunch Spot (by koreanberry)

I like the simple but modern decor. When you walk in, the hostess always tells you the special bento of the day (and shows you in the front) before sitting you down. You get a good mix of sushi bentos for $15 or less. Service is friendly, sushi is fresh and delicious. I love their salad with their awesome salad dressing.

1 Stars: Bad service...bad food. (by dimarush)

I would definitely NOT recommend Sage 400 to anyone. Went to dinner Friday night with a friend. Ordered a specialty cucumber roll. The roll did not look or taste very good. After waiting 10 minutes for our waitress, we flagged another waiter to try to return the roll. Instead of helping us, he left for another 10 minutes, trying to find our waitress. He returned without our waitress, and again tried to explain the taste of the food. We again explained that we wished to return the roll, and asked to see the manager. This is after 20 minutes of spending with the cucumber roll. The manager never came out. We were told that she was on the phone, and could not get away. At this time, our waitress decided to grace us with her presence, and said that she was away because she thought we were already taken care of. She apologized for the taste of the roll. She explained, "This is our favorite roll, but it is an acquired taste. 50% like it and 50% do not". To which we thought... how can this be the favorite, if half of the people do not like it?
Finally, the waitress agreed to exchange it, but said we would still have to pay the higher price. Feeling exhausted, we agreed. Trying to forget the whole experience, we continued trying to enjoy the rest of the night. But, after 30 minutes, the waitress appeared and asked if we could free up the table and move to the bar, if we were not to order ANYMORE FOOD!
Definitely the worst sushi experience, definitely will not be back... Try at your own risk...

4 Stars: Great Bartenders! (by bjones007)

It was our first time visting this restaurant. We were seated in the dining room. After 10 minutes we were still not greeted, so we moved to the bar. The bartender was a young lady who apparently noticed that was had moved from the dining area. She apologized for the waiters and promised to make it up to us. She was wonderful! The food was prompt and the service was excellent. Thanks to her we will be returning soon, but only to dine at the bar.

1 Stars: Service ruined the experience (by aellahham)

I went to Sage 400 with my husband and another couple on a Friday night. Initially we had a great time-- the atmosphere was welcoming and chic, the food was fresh, and we had all commented that we couldn't wait to come back. When the bill came, we paid with a credit card and stayed about 10 minutes after signing while finishing our drinks. The waiter returned and asked for more tip because he has to share it with the bartender and bussers. He kept saying, "I don't mean to be rude, but I'm sure you'll understand where I'm coming from." Of course we understand that he does not keep every penny. The service was nothing special. He did his job and nothing more. We tipped over 15% after excluding tax, and were appauled that we were asked for more. We felt bullied into leaving more money. We told the manager, but she seemed unconcerned. We will not be returning.

4 Stars: great food, lounge-like atmosphere (by nadiathinks)

I am a sushi fiend, so I loved this place. Definitely much more chic on the inside than out. Great decor with well-placed tables, and a mix of seating types throughout. The sushi LOOKED and TASTED fabulous! My friends & I ordered about 10 rolls and people were actually pointing to our table to order, it looked so good! My friends tried the drinks (what cute names they had) and said they were great! The service was excellent; we only had to flag down our waiter when we were out of soy sauce. Had our group been larger than four, however, I think we would have had trouble chatting. The music is great but can be loud for gatherings--in close contact, you can hear your dinner companions fine. Parking was easy, the restrooms were clean. The only weird thing about the entire experience was that our waiter did not smile easily at all. Other than that, it was perfect for a sushi night out with the girls!

The really like the atmosphere and the fish is really fresh. I have been to other places in the area and I feel like the fish has been sitting around for a couple of days. Sage does sushi very well!

1 Stars: Terrible sushi and terrible customer service (by drgoodfood)

I went to Sage 400 on a recommendation and generally good reviews from a number of people. When we entered Angie refused to seat us promptly despite the obvious number of open tables. After waiting for 15 minutes, we sat and ordered a number of dishes. Now, I'm certainly not an expert on sushi, but there is a lack of good sushi in Houston period, and Sage 400 was certainly below par. When I asked the waiter for the manager to talk about the food, Angie came over to tell me that the food is in fact good, and that she didn't care if I was not pleased with the food because it was excellent. She told me that they never have complaints about their food and therefore, she had no care for what I had to say. What's worse is that Angie and the owner Teddy threatened to call the police if we did not pay for our food. Yet, we never threatened not to pay, we only wanted to inform the management that we were not pleased. I would never recommend this restaurant to anyone, even if the food was superb.

I had heard many good things about Sage 400 and decided to try it for lunch. I had the Chilean Sea Bass Bento box, which was very tasty. Easy to park, and reasonably priced compared to other sushi restaurants. I will try it again.

I have lived in Houston now for 2 years and I am always looking for a new sushi spot. I've tried just about everywhere at this point, and Sage 400 has just topped my list. Their roles are always fresh, tasty, well presented, and just plain great! The employees are nice people, but i don't spend a lot of time with them as I am there to eat sushi! It's just a really good, relaxed restaraunt that serves up great rolls. They also have an appetizer, it's yellowtail, cilantro, & jalepeno (thinly sliced) that is to DIE FOR!!! It is by far the best thing I've ever had. All in all, I highly recommend this place.

bad sushi...would never go back. I find it hard to belive that a coastal town such as Houston has such a hard time with good sushi!

It was hard to find this place because of the name "Sage 400" with an address at 2800 Sage Road! It's the suite number, I finally found out after making the taxi driver go crazy driving up and down Sage. The drive was worth it..... I'm impressed at how many people were dining on a Sunday evening! The sushi and sashimi are divine.... My wife is very selective and raved about the handrolls. No mushy seaweed fom being stored improperly like you find elsewhere! We will return. Sushi at least once a week has been a habit of mine for years!

3 Stars: Not our favorite in Houston (by SnapHappy)

Some friends and I wanted to expand our Thursday-night sushi tradition to include more places than just Ra, Zake and Rickshaw, so we tried Sage 400 the other night. Bottom line - we won't be going back. Nothing was really bad, but it's just not for us, and we have a better experience elsewhere. The prices are a bit steeper than the other places, and the happy hour specials aren't quite as special. Additionally, the crowd was more 50-something than 20/30-something, and we missed the vibrant atmosphere of our other faves. Maybe it's the low ceilings, the muted decor or the barely-audible background music, but you cannot forget you're in a strip mall in this place.

NOW for the food - I had some interesting dishes, but nothing more innovative than what I've seen elsewhere. While I knew that tuna, my favorite, is higher in mercury than perhaps any other fish, the sashimi slabs I had here were extremely heavy on the metallic taste, so much so that I didn't finish them. The Red River Rolls were interesting, but not quite as tasty as Ra's Lone Star Rolls. The lychee martini was not quite as smooth or heavy on the fruit as Zake's. The dessert menu also leaves a lot to be desired. While Ra's sublime cinnamon tempura ice cream is delicious and large enough to be shared by a table of 6, I could have finished off Sage 400's tempura ice cream dish on my own inside 2 minutes.

Maybe we're spoiled by the other great sushi haunts in town, but this one is not the top of the heap.

5 Stars: The Best in Houston (by pukleja)

I discovered Sage back in January, and have visited more times than even the best sushi lovers wish to count. The sushi is always the freshest in town and the service (Ricky) is top notch. I have taken sushi loving co-workers from Los Angeles, New York, and Chicago to Sage and all have agreed that it is the best. The pepper tuna sashimi appetizer is beautifully presented as a rose and the scorpion roll is outstanding with king crab replacing the crab stick!

4 Stars: Super sushi rolls! (by t_girl_dining)

I'll add my 2 cents to say that 400 Sage does a fine job with its House Rolls. My faves were the Volcano and Skydiver - excellent presentation and very tasty. I'd never had a Volcano roll - not a typical selection in SF sushi spots - and this won me over. The mayo based sauce and chopped scallops so yummy over the CA roll. We also ordered the peppered tuna sashimi which wasn't melt-in-your-mouth - a so-so experience. Our server was great with the right amount of attention. The place has a hip bar/lounge atmosphere.

5 Stars: Overall A Wonderful Experience!!! (by baxelrod)

I would have to say, I too have been to almost all the "top" sushi restaurants in Houston and 400 Sage was right up there with my number one pick. Not only was the sushi fresh and delicious, the service was incredible. I went with a group of girls on a Friday night and had 8 o'clock reservations and got seated as soon as we walked in. We never had to wait for our drinks or food and once we were done eating, moved to the lounge and continued to be served by our same waitor from dinner. I have to say I will definately be back and very soon!

1 Stars: Great overall Sushi restaurant (by snguyen122)

We've been everywhere, Fish, Uptown, Zake, Ra....this is by far our favorite sushi restaurant...have there on several occasions, very consistent w/quality, service, etc. The decor is classy & modern decor. The owners are very personable and we always have a great experience at this place. We had a reservation at Ra on Sat. night(9 of us)...after waiting for quite awhile and the hostess informing us that it would be another hr, we called Sage 400 and got immediately after we arrived.

5 Stars: Don't Miss Out! (by cgsnow)

My husband and I have moved around quite a bit and the first thing we look for is a great sushi restaurant. Luckily we've found our spot at Sage 400. The ambience is very chic but comfortable and romantic, the staff is incredibly hospitable and the owner personally ensures that we are pleased. Their toro is always excellent and they usually offer three varieties; chu, o-toro and just toro. Everything is fresh and they have a large selection of rolls. Weve searched around and this is the best place in town!
