So I went here with my boyfriend the other night on a whim. I am so glad I did. The sushi was wonderful! It's hard to find quality sushi on a college budget, but this place blows it out of the water. Plus, I've never seen a place with so

So my friend and I were on the hunt for a new place to try out since we were in the Charlotte area. We pretty much just used the GPS to find the nearest place that served sushi and fortunately, Tanaka caught my eye! I was praying that it

Food is ordinary. When you order hibachi, they only give you a little bit of meat and a whole lot of rice. Miso soup looks like they used the seasoned package and mixed it with water.

Never coming here again...

I visited this Restaurant under the old management and it was fair. I saw the sign 'Under New Management' and decided to give it a fresh go.

I am very happy I did. I have been twice this week and I have enjoyed every peice of Sushi I have tried. The presentation is excelent and the Staff is helpful and friendly.

I am stuck on Sushi but I will comment on the Grill once I get my Sushi fix.

Go you won't be sorry.

I love the food at this place, I started off with hibachi entrees and one day i decided to try the sushi to see what it was like. From that moment on I was in love. I always get two orders, they are that good. I also bring my friends around all the time, after exams we would go get sushi and other things from the menu. We all love it. It really is one of the best Japanese restaurants I've been to.

I walked in to the place expecting the worset since I read that June 10th review. But my sister told my to trust her the place is awesome.

OMG WOW! That review falsely portrayed that place. Not that, that stuff couldn't or didn't happened. But it didn't happened to me last night.

I walked in notice two couples waiting and a guy ahead of me placing his order. Ok 5 min wait thanks to dude. But it allowed me to look over the menu, When it was my turn I placed my order for 3 rolls, the girl kindly informed me the the sushi chef had 4 orders ahead of mine so it would be a 20 to 25 min wait. I paid, went to Bi-Lo, then dropped a movie off at Block Buster. 15 min later walked in think 'Great more people now this will make it another 15 mins......Nope she already had it bagged for me. Sis was right AWESOME.

I eat it, sooooo better then Harris Teeters pre rolled stuff. Even if it did take the whole 25 mins now oh ya I will wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cons: I have a little stomach

My daughter introduced me to this restaurant about a year ago and since the initial introduction we have been regulars. The sushi is delicious, reasonably priced and filling. The restaurant is convenient to the local grocer which makes it easy to order dinner and pick up a few last minutes items for the household.

In both of our separate take out dishes, THERE WERE HAIRS FROM THE COOK! It made me lose my appetite and was completely unprofessional! They should at least wear hairnets to keep the strays at bay.
We both ordered a simple hibachi chicken meal, but after a 40 min+ wait (FOR TAKEOUT), we finally got home to find that instead of CHICKEN they gave us STEAK, which I can't even eat!
The air conditioning was obviously not on, even though it was a sweltering summer day, and the servers did not even apologize for the wait. They were distracted putting soggy watery veggies into our meals. The zucchini was wiggly and unappetizing.
I DO NOT RECOMMEND and I am very angry at the whole experience. My stomach hurts now, because the food tasted so bad and because the sauce was so watered down.

New owners... and I love the new food!

I'd easily rate Tanaka's 4.5 out of 5 stars overall! Highly recommended!

Here are my thoughts and experience details with Tanaka's:

I live right near Tanaka's and tried it when they first opened a few years ago, under their old ownership... I was not happy. It wasn't so bad that it made me sick or anything, but it just did not have any flavor... at all. I would purposefully drive past it and go farther down the street to Toyama's, Sushi 101 or Ishi's (note: Toyama's was my favorite for Hibachi/Teriyaki meals and Sushi 101 was my favorite for affordable sushi? but now I get them both from Tanaka??s).

Tanaka's has new owners now and they are doing it right, starting with the food. The restaurant is still pretty basic. I would not consider the atmosphere to be "fine dining" but the food is now amazing and the restaurant is always very clean. I would have no problem bringing a date or my family here. I've tried almost everything on the menu and have not had a bad meal yet. And everything is pretty affordable, even on the smallest budget. The hibachi/teriyaki meals are priced similarly to Toyama's and Ishi's, and based on the last time I went for Sushi, Tanaka's is slightly less expensive than Sushi 101.

On a side note? I recommend trying the Hibachi Bowl. I have them add extra veggies and mushrooms, but it is probably my favorite thing on the menu. And when they say it can feed two, it really means it can feed two a few times. I normally split it into portions and get 4 meals out of it. Love it!

If you are a fan of Toyama and Ishi's, you should love this place. I actually prefer Tanaka's teriyaki and hibachi meals over the others. I think this is because it comes out so fresh and you're not eating rice that was made that morning (or maybe a few days ago). Friends I've taken there also mentioned that the freshly made rice made a big difference in the taste of the meal. Though I'm not 100% sold that Tanaka's sauce is better than the others, it is equally as good. I did notice that you taste the mayo portion of the sauce more than the spice portion, but it was still very good. They sell their sauce by the bottle if you like it enough to take some home... I did.

Their sushi is amazing, and I love that I can get a hibachi combo with a sushi roll on the side to snack on (one of my biggest beefs with Toyama's... no sushi). The ingredients taste fresh and full of flavor, and the chef can properly roll and plate the dish in case there are any guys out there trying to impress a date.

Since I found out about the new owners I have been eating here at least once a week, and highly recommend it to anyone that likes GOOD affordable Japanese. It is great for lunch or dinner. Just make note that they are currently closed on Sundays (bummer for the lunch after church craving for sushi). The staff is always wonderful and polite. They are even willing to alter the menu items to accommodate your taste and healthiness options (something very important to me). After you order, you may not have your plate in front of you in under a minute like some other places, but when you get it you can taste that it was made fresh and just came off the grill.

Hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

I have been going here for about 6 years and always thought it was one of the best kept secrets in Charlotte. It's been a while since I have visited, and was surprised when I saw new management.
Since the change, the food quality has gone down along with the portions. One example, the chicken used to nicely sized, now it's cut down to a very small pieces with little taste. Also, the sushi that used to enjoy so much is now wrapped in rice paper.
It's not so clean inside any longer, and the employee's are not so clean looking either. I was there recently and was simply not impressed based on the food quality and service. This used to be a great resturant, now it's become average. The tast of food is still very good, but it's not the same place.
It's just another example of the poor quality and customer service that seems to be everywhere and in everthing we buy NOW..
It used to be every week resturant, now it's once a month if that.

I have been to this restaurant twice and both times I have waited 1 hour for them to prepare a take out order. The sushi chef was too busy talking to someone else to even bother preparing my order for the first 30 minutes. The price is adequete for the quality, but the cleanliness, wait time, and poor service far out weigh it. Stay away!!

Since changing ownership this place has really come together. The food is the same if not better than the "sit down" high dollar Japanese restaurants but for a fraction of the price. Their new Sushi chef is top notch always coming up with new rolls. They even have TVs now...making it a great place for lunch or to stop by and have a quick meal before heading home for the night.

The subtleties of flavor are amazing for such a humble place. This is one of my favorite new "finds." I tried this place awhile back & was not impressed, but I find all that has changed as of late....not sure if there is new management/chefs, or if they just got their act together, but this place has food that would normally be found in only the top-notch sushi places. The flavors are fresh & delicate, not heavy or cloying in any way. And the fact that it's cheap just adds to the draw! The only downside is how slow they are--I would go more often if I could count on faster service. The sampler platter is too huge even for 2 people, and all for less than $15!! Can't be beat! (and I'm a major foodie!)

Never thought a neighborhood's Japanese restaurant will provided the 5 stars services and foods .... Tanaka's Grill....They DID!!
Nice and Clean....plus smell GOOD(some grill's restaurant you will always smell a lot of ccoking smoke!!)But when you walk in there you can only smell fresh and clean!!
Affordable price, and a Family MENU......you have no reason and excuse to say "I dont want any" cuz Their MENU is super fit to any one any family size!!
The best thing i would like was their fresh make Sushi and their special sauce...HOMEMADE Special sauce!! I dont think you can that in many places they will make their own sauce.
BTW... i love their Greeting Lucky Cat in front of their registor...so cute!!

Tanakas is a local delight! The new team in place is taking this small neighborhood spot in a whole new direction! The initial greeting from Rosario the waitress and cashier is always friendly! Then the chefs take over, Botz on Sushi and Javier on the Hibachi grill. The food is always served fresh and hot!
Botz is always adding new items to the menu and suggestion board! When you get your check you will also be pleasently pleased as the prices are unbelievably reasonable.

Love the food and the quality. People are great and treat you like they have know you for years. The way customer service use to be when the guy behind the counter know your name. The place has more of a personal fell instead of a commercial vibe. Which adds the the enjoyment of the food. And b/c of that it has become a twice a week dinner place for me and my family.

It is a place that once you try it will be hooked!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have lived in Highland Creek for 15 years and have seen this location be several different restaurants. When it because Tanaka's I was skeptical. However, after trying their sushi I was pleased. Since then I have picked up A LOT of sushi from there. They do have tables to eat-in as well. I have had their stir-fry and fried rice. I have never had a bad experience so I have to rate it 5 stars!

Sometimes it is crowded (like tonight!) other time's I'm the only one there. No worries, the food is great. The bottom line is, I try to continue to eat there because I really like having a good sushi place so close! If people will continue to try it I think the area can support it -- especiall as this are continues to grow!

By the way, this is owened by the same person who ownes Kabutos at Harris and 49. That's a good restaurant as well.

Pros: Prices and food quality

.

Like the other reviewer- this place is typically empty when I go. However, for the low prices, the food is great. The hibachi order to go are great as long as you get home within about 10 minutes. For people in the Highland Creek area- it's perfect. It is located in the Bi-Lo shopping center in Prosperity Church Road (off of DeArmon/Johston-Oehler Road Stop light).

Clean, fast, cheap and easy. When you are looking for a good meal that is quick...this is a great place to go that doesn't sell Hamburgers and fries!

Pros: Fast, Cheap, Good food

Cons: Doesn't appear to have a lot of business...but it may do well after work and on weekends

Needed someplace fast, close by, and had that craving for sushi. This is not a dine-in place as the atmosphere was drab. Sanitary rating was acceptable at 96.5 the day I went. There was NO ONE there - which typically is not a good sign, but it is located in a residential area - maybe not the best location for ultimate success. Two other people shortly showed up once I arrived (phew!) They both also had takeout. Service was quick. Sushi was good but prepared in smaller individual pieces, I thought. Prices are very reasonable. They also serve hibachi meals, but I did not order any. There ARE definitely better sushi restaurants but since there are few to none that deliver, the quick convenience to where I live makes this a menu-saver in the kiitchen.
