I was hired as a stablehand here. The barn is in such bad condition that I felt mine and the horses safety was in serious danger. The owner, Terry, does not clean the stalls regularly, and keeps the horses in the stalls for extended amount of time. Some don't go out to pasture and one horse was tied up while in a stall. The horse would give out wails of discomfort and frustration since it was put in a stall next to a horse that it didn't get along with and couldn't get away. Terry quickly responded by saying "that's just how horses say hello". The amount of time the horses are left in the stalls caused some of the horses to paw at the ground and be aggressive. There was a horse that was covered in burs and thorns from head to tail and I pointed it out she just rolled her eyes, laughed and left the creature in that state. It was obvious he was left like that for a long time cause his mane was matted around all the thorns. While I was cleaning the stalls, which obviously haven't been cleaned in weeks, some of the horses got in a little "fight" with each other (as horses normally do in a herd). Instead of leaving the situation alone and letting the the animals resolve it, or even breaking them up in a well manner, the owner decided it would be a good idea to throw rocks at the animals to make them stop. There were some horses who were crowded around a gate I needed to get though and to get them away Terry grabbed a whip and popped it in the air towards the animals, spooking them away and promoting aggression towards the creatures.
It's obvious Terry doesn't understand the responsibility of owning a horse, let alone 12, and doesn't understand natural horse behavior. She treated these creatures like cats and dogs, rather than a herd animal that needs high demands, patience and space. I would not recommend going to this stable to learn proper horsemanship or even common horse knowledge. I didn't get a chance to see her teach riding lessons, but from what I saw, I didn't want to find out. This all happened on my first day and I quit immediately afterwards.

I have been riding at Starlight Stables on and off since 1995 and my daughter has been riding there for the last 4 years. We have had a wonderful experience at this stable. The owners' philosophy is to learn to ride well while having a lot of fun. She will break up the lesson with something fun such as a short trail ride or a game. This is good for both the horse and the rider mentally and helps to improve the riders' skill. (see Horse and Rider, May 2009 "From Rails to Trails...") Starlight Stables does not have an indoor arena and sometimes the weather is a problem, but the owner makes every effort to reschedule the missed lesson. The school horses are very well mannered and have either been raised and trained from foals or carefully selected for their job by the owner. Even the more challenging mounts are gentle, capable, safe, and easy to learn from. I think this is a true testament to the owners' knowledge and horsemanship. Starlight Stables is perfect for beginners and for advanced riders wanting to improve their skills while having a great time learning. It is not a stuffy show barn with endless arena work and high competition. It is a safe, friendly stable where a person can learn not only to ride but how to care for horses. I recommend both the lessons and summer camps at this stable. Happy riding!!

I would highly recommend Starlight Stables to anyone with a love of horses. Children to adults of all ages and experiences are welcome. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable and the only thing better than the instruction are the quality horses themselves. They have a great website- check it out for more info and great pictures. I can only testify to the wonderful experiences I have had riding there-you need to experience it for yourself. If patient, hands on, knowledgeable and fun describes the environment you want be in Starlight Stables is for you!

This is a GREAT riding school for any one who loves horses or wants to compete at horse shows and WIN!! I started at Starlight Stables when I was 13 years old and advanced from western to jumping and all the way to dressage. Through out my equestrian training I was winning blue ribbons in all classes. Thanks to the help of Starlight Stables' instructors and amazing horses! I would highly recommend this stable to someone who wants a fun, safe learning enviorment. I have been to other riding schools and Starlight Stables is the only horseback riding school I would recommend.

Pros: Great horses and Instructors

Cons: I moved to Tn and Starlight Stables is in Mo

Starlight will not get you ready to compete. She does not participate in academy shows no matter what the owner tells you. Because there is no indoor arena, you will not be able to ride if it rains, if it is cold, or if it is hot. Worse yet, if it is muddy, the owner will charge you full price to ride up and down her muddy driveway instead of her even more muddy arena. The owner has a overly high opinion of herself wowing you with double speak and praising herself nonstop all the while she will spend her time either trying to schmooze you or looking down her nose at you. Long story short, if you are taking lessons with the goal to compete or advance to a more challenging horse, this is not your place. On the other hand if riveting game of red light green light or Simon says is what you are after, give it a go.

Excellent riding school. This Academy of Riding offers instructions to both adults and children. The owner has over 20 years experience and is a pleasure to work with and very knowledgeable. The horses used at the stable are well kept, trained and most are gentle. I highly recommend this stable for lessons or even for birthday parties.
