when we first went in we were greeted by a very pleasant young man, they were a little busy but that didn't hamper waitstaff's mood, a plus! He took the time to explain whatever questions we had about vietnamese dishes as we clearly were novices to vietnamese cuisine and how to "eat" some of the dishes. This was very much appreciated, as sometimes we've tried other ethnic foods and were left to figure it out ourselves. Had the Pho ga and it was a lovely soup and so filling! Also had the vietenamese pancake and the vietnamese iced tea was amazing! it had a very unique flavor that i can't wait to have again. does anyone know if i can buy it anywhere to make at home or have a recipe? yum! the prices were also great and best of all, close to the south side! will take my friends for sure!

Pros: fresh food and unintimidating atmosphere, location

Cons: heard that wait is a little long

So after seeing Cafe Hoang on "Check, please", my wife and I decided to give it a try. I am not a regular at Vietnamese restaurants so my knowledge of the cuisine is quite limited. I am , however, a very adventurous diner. We had to wait about 20 minutes or so to be seated but we knew that after see thing the restaurant on t.v., that would be the case. After being seated, our waiter came promptly and took our order.
I had and wholly recommend the 'soft shell crab in tamarind sauce'. This is on the Chef's Special side of the menu. My wife had some sort of seafood soup with noodles and she was also impressed.
Kudos to the chef and if you are in the mood for an "authentic ethnic restaurant", this is the place for solid Vietnamese. With 2 apps and 2 entrees, our bill was $40.
