When I asked a pediatrician at the practice about getting speech therapy for my then 3 year old son with autism, I was told to call my school district. When I replied that he was already receiving speech therapy through the district and we were looking to add addition therapy, the doctor looked confused, asked about our insurance and said that she didn't think it would be possible. To be perfectly clear, I had already spoken to my insurance and they had confirmed 60 visits/year at a $30 copay as long as the primary care provider would make the referral. Despite the fact that I knew we had coverage, I called the insurer to confirm again. I left a message explaining our benefits and again asked for a referral. During 3 subsequent conversations with the "referral specialist" I was told we did not have coverage. It took Blue Cross calling the physician's group to resolve the matter. When we did finally get the referral, their excuse was that Blue Cross makes mistakes all the time and that the doctors don't make any money from the HMOs. In fact, they're just not sure "how long they can continue accepting them." Referral in hand, the only choice for therapy was a 45 minutes to 1 hour drive from my home. Although the facility and the therapist are very nice, 3 hours for a 50 minute appointment once/week is just too much. When I asked if there were other options, I was told that there were not and "oh, it is too bad that it is so far away."

By the way, my son is the only child in their practice (with HMO insurance) currently receiving speech therapy. They have 7 doctors and at least 2 nurse practitioners in 3 offices... It just doesn't add up.
