RUDE, RUDE, RUDE!!! I had been going to Wheeler's for years (only because Devil's Lake was full) and have to say I have not met ruder people in my life. The owner's wife is quite unstable - she cussed out my fiance after telling him he looked like an old man and was too old for me (he is 7 yrs older than me and I look younger than i am). The owner, Mark, has been known to hide in the woods, watching people...which is quite creepy. Especially after I caught him checking out my derriere as I was picking out wet wood from his overpriced pile. This campground is overpriced as well, and the only reason they get any business at all is because Devil's Lake is so popular and hard to get reservations. These owners have always been rude and disrespectful as long as I've known them (about 10 years) and we definitely will NOT return and let everyone know what a hustle the place is.

My wife and I were politely camping and having a nice trip. Until the owner came to our site at 11 PM and accused us of foraging for wood against his policy. The first night we paid $15 for a wheelbarrow of his wet wood. We then proceeded to purchase drier wood elsewhere. Apparently he didn't like that too much.

Scary to think on a private site that one cranky person has the power to evict you from the campsite on a whim.

I came with a couple of friends to experience Devil's Lake for the first time. We came with two cars and three dogs, total! We got in a little late at night, but checking in was a breeze and the woman was very accommodating. They were very helpful and even had us follow them to our site. We weren't there much during the day, but while we were there the ground were super clean, quiet and the bathrooms were practically spotless every time we went! We had no problems with noisy neighbors, etc. The only thing I can complain about were the mosquitos! I really enjoyed it-super close to the park, and beautiful area. One more thing-make sure you remember to bring s'mores stuff if you want it-we forgot and had to pay quite a bit to for everything at their little shop. Understandable their prices would be a bit high, but whoo! Just remember to bring everything next time and you'll be good to go!

We had stayed at Wheeler's for 2 years on occasion, then decided to get a permanent site there. We are on our 2nd year as permanent campers. We have been very happy, & have made some great new friends. We have never had any problems. People need to remember to treat others & their property with the same respect as they would want at their own home. Us & our 4 children enjoy our time at Wheeler's. As for Mark & Lolly... very nice owners. Go & enjoy yourselves, you won't be disappointed! Very beautiful, & relaxing setting.

This campground is very nice-clean and updated bathrooms, excellent sites. Unfortunately, the owner was so rude we will never go back. I'm sorry I didn't pay attention to some of these reviews when I booked this trip for my family and our young children.

I understand and respect the fact that the owner has rules. However, there are tactful and professional ways to go about enforcing said rules. A member of our party drove into the campground a bit too fast for the owner's taste, and rather than calmly ask that we watch our speed, he came off as a confrontational jerk. He literally screamed at us, (in front of the kids), even though none of us were being defensive or argumentative back. It is not as if our group was up partying late into the night or deliberately breaking rules--we were quiet and cooperative campers with young children!

It's obvious to me now why this campground was nearly empty on a gorgeous summer weekend. It's such a shame because it's a very nice campground, and we would have returned if we didn't feel so very unwelcome. If the owner hates dealing with customers so much, he should quit the business. Anyone with a minimal knowledge of customer service knows that this is not the way to maintain customers!

The loudest thing at Wheeler's are the birds in the morning! The Wheelers go out of their way to ensure a pleasant stay for those who like to get away, relax and have a true, comfortable camping experience. The Wheelers have put a lot of time, money and effort into creating a place that is above and beyond the typical "city campground." If you're looking to whoop it up, this is not the place for you. Those that camp there know the rules and respect them, making it an enjoyable retreat for all guests. We stayed at Devil's Lake State Park a month earlier, and while our first night was quiet, the second night we had some younger people near us that were loud into the wee hours; the rules didn't seem to be respected or enforced. The restrooms at Wheelers are very clean and the sites are large with a wide variety of choices in their sites. We found the Wheelers to be very friendly and interesting people, contrary to some of the other reviews. We never felt like "old man Wheeler" was peering through the woods at us! This is a mature camper's campground - don't let the bad reviews sway your decision to stay here! We're looking forward to our next visit to Wheelers.

Cons: No soap or hand dryers in the restrooms

I'm mostly amused by the folks who give poor reviews of Wheelers. Most of their complaints are simply absurd! I've been a seasonal camper there for many years and have noticed that the people who get upset with the way the campground is run are usually folks who try to get around the rules and then lose their tempers in self-rightous indignation! Yes, the Wheelers are strict about campers adhering to their rules. If they break the rules for one group, they must do so for all groups. Is that so hard to understand? The Wheeler family works hard to keep a clean, well-maintained, and green-friendly campground. I've found them to be nothing but caring and helpful. Wheelers is great!

The owner will sneak around the woods in the dark and watch you at your camp. Then he will raise hell about things he doesn't like. Stay away from this place.

If you want a friendly large site for family... this is the place to be.. very clean and lots of stuff to do on site.
Not a good place to be if u want to stay up and party, the owner will boot you out if you are loud and don't care about others.
Sad that a few bad apples have made this campground rating to a 2.. they get a 10 in my book.

I've been staying at the Wheeler's for 6 years now and I can't imagine staying anywhere else. They are always friendly and helpful (even checking the weather for us and posting it for all campers!). We have easy access to Devil's Lake & Wisconsin Dells from their location. It's a wonderful get away. I especially enjoy being able to take a hot shower!

The owners of this campground are very personable and friendly and clearly put a lot of work into making their campground as enjoyable for their customers as possible. A few of my friends and I camped there over Memorial Day weekend and it was really wonderful. The grounds are beautiful and the sites are pretty big. They have a really nice (and new) shower house that was always clean, which is hard to find at campgrounds. overall, it was a great trip and we will be sure to go back soon.

The owner of the campground teats his customers as 2 year old children. We went there for memorial day weekend to relax and spend some time with friends and children. Our weekend was ruined by the owner, who was hiding in the woods, and constantly coming over to our site changing the rules of the campground. Very rude guy, not the best place to go with your kids.

I was visiting some family staying here over memorial day and didn't see any signs pulling in so drove to campsite and was told by family member that I had to pick up a parking pass at the office. I drove to office to pick up ice and pass and was unpleasantly surprised at how rude the owner at the desk was. He threatened me and was VERY rude. I wouldn't recommend staying here as no one deserves to be treated the way he treated me. I am a business owner myself and was thoroughly disgusted with his attitude. I believe there must be a reason his campground appeared to be half full on memorial day weekend when everywhere else in WI was booked full. POOR SERVICE ATTITUDE. Save your money and go somewhere else would be highly recommended.
