Thurman's has the best hamburgers in the city. Probably in the state for that matter. Food portions are large and they don't skimp on the food. Also, the staff is very friendly. The food and the staff easily get 5 stars. However, the seating, waiting room, signing yourself in to be seated, the usual long wait to be seated, and the cramp dining area do not get 5 stars. If you can make it outside the normal lunch, dinner, and busy times, then definitely go. If you can only make it during these times, go somewhere else. It's not worth the wait and the hassle.
Thurman Cafe is located in the German Village area of Columbus. They serve basic home-cooked style meals. The menu consists of a selection of sausages and sandwiches. They also serve delicious very large hamburgers with an amazing selection of toppings.
It takes two hands to hold it! I would highly recommend this restaurant.
Went here for my son's birthday since we had all heard all the hype about it, primarily from Man vs. Food. Must say though, I was not impressed. It was very hot, they said their air was not working. The service was not good, took forever to get drink refills. After we ordered it took about 45 minutes to get our food. We all got burgers. I really couldn't figure out what made these "special". I can make a much, much better burger than this one. I ordered mine well-done, it wasn't. The tomatoes were soggy, the bun was soggy and falling apart. My husband's burger didn't even have a bottom bun. The "onion straws" they serve with the bacon cheddar burger were not "straws" and they were gross. I had a stomach ache the rest of the night. It was a fun atmosphere, but I need more than that when I go out to EAT. I won't go back.
I would loved to have tried the burgers, but I never got the chance. Arriving at 5 PM with tickets for a 7 PM Clippers game, my family and I were told that there would be a 30 minute wait. Satisfied that we could still eat there and get to the game, we waited. And waited, and waited, and waited. 30 minutes turned into 60, and after they started seating people who arrived after us (and who put their names on the list after us), we had to leave. I don't expect I'll ever be going back.
I ate one of the thurmanators. I'm full, but I could have eaten more. Great burger. Victor the bartender/server has been with the place for 20 years had a great personality, great restaurant employee. I asked the same question that everyone ask, why not expand the restaurant? I guess the problem is a zoning problem because the restaurant is located in a residential neighborhood. I brought my wife and only waited 15 minutes for a 2 top table on a Friday after 3PM. As far as seating, there are basically eight 4 -6 people booths, four 2 tops and about ten bar seats. The bigger the party, the longer the wait. I suggest larger groups (larger than six) be willing to use multiple tables throughout the little dining area.
Pros: burgers, service
Cons: german village zoning restrictions
I have worked in hotels for many years now, I always recommend Thurman's for the simple fact that I hear great things and its part of our History here in Columbus. However I have never been there until today.. Service was okay, my waitress or waiter or my hostess whoever was helping me I couldn??t keep track ... Anywho I could have easily walked out with out paying my food tab. I stood there, moved out of my table because I could tell they were getting busy and I was at a two setter, since I understand how its important to service your guest in a timely manner I got up.. anywho stood there and waited and waited and waited, on my third waited I was ready to walk out, Clearly I was trying to pay had my card out and my to go box in hand which I got by myself. Then I was asked if I was ready for my tab and I said yes, the guy was like just a beer and started walking away and I said and a Thurman burger... then the waitress who had started to help me said SHE HAD A BEER AND A THURMAN BURGER, then gave me a nasty look... I could have hit the cracked out looking b**ch right then... I got my bill and asked for some to go silverware, it took nearly 10 mins to get that.. I had to ask three diff people finally the third lady I asked I said, Excuse me I have asked two others for to go silver where and its been nearly 10 min and I still don??t have any so she said okay and went and got me some, which took about 5 mins... sooo lets do the math 10+5=15min!! FOR SOME DAMN SILVERWARE! I went in-between lunch and dinner shift, so I didn??t have to wait at all to be seated which was nice.. However it took about 25 to 30 mins just to get my burger.. It doesn??t take that long to make a damn burger.. When I got it, it was bigger than I thought it would be so I asked for a real knife, and they brought me a kitchen knife that very easily half the size of my arm, I didn??t really care but it thought it was odd... Anywho had to get up and get my own to go box from behind the bar because once I got my burger I didn??t hear one more thing from the multiple people asking me if I had ordered when I first sat down, it was over kill at first but then I got nothing.. The burger wasn??t as good as I hoped it to be, it was alright... Nothing like they are made out to be... Overall I wouldn??t go back unless I was down in that area and I was with a friend and they wanted to go.. Will I send my guest there anymore.. Eh only if they ask for something that is historic to Columbus itself, but I will stick to recommending Schmidt??s and Ohio Deli before I blurt Thurman??s out.... I was really hoping it would be something great, but It just wasn??t.. Oh and I think its ridiculous that you have to pay extra for fries... Burger+Fries=Normal, but nothing is normal about this place so its a loss... Also on last thing the beer was not cold!! YUCK!
Pros: Nice Story
Cons: Everthing isnt always everything
I saw Thurmans cafe on Man vs Food, and I have lived in this city all my life and have never been there; after watching the program I decided to try Thurmans out when I got some free time. On Saturday 06/12 around 5p I went to Thurmans and ordered the Jonnie burger, an italion sub and two orders of fried brownies. I pull up and parking is awful, then I go into the facility and it took me 15 mins to find someone who could tell me where to go get my pick up at; I then finally go into the middle of the crowded bar to get my food, I paid a God awful amount for those 4 items and left, I live on the other side of town. I get home anticipating this great burger I saw on T.V. I took one bite, and saw the burger was severly under cooked, and the fries were just awful, the sub was more lettuce and onion than anything the best part of the meal was the brownies. Forgetting about calling on saturday, I attempted to call on 06/15 just to let the manager know what my experience was, he did not want to hear anything I had to say, I was not looking nor asked for compensation, he just wanted nothing to do with anything I had to say. I will never recommend this dirty hole in the wall with the under cooked food to anyone.
Pros: Staple in the community
Cons: Food was not great and management stinks
It was 2 or 3 pm, and we had three hours before I had to head back to work. Plenty of time right? At any average restaurant with an average staff, yes. At Thurman? NO. We waited TWO HOURS. At some point we ventured into the dining area to get a drink at the bar. There were many open spots, I think the least they could have done was seat people and let them look at the menu while they waited. I watched as the barkeep drank on the job, and basically just dicked around until we actually called to him.
We were eventually seated, and I had an hour left. It took 15 minutes for the waitress to take our order. 20 minutes later, and still burger-less, I told the waitress that when the food was finally done, just to go ahead and put them into doggy bags. We left 15 minutes before I had to be in to work.
The burgers are giant, but not particularly special in terms of taste.
I hope this place reads its reviews, and corrects it's errors, because this could be a great burger joint, IF they get some staff that actually care about their customers.
Pros: A lot of food for your money.
Cons: Neglectful, uncaring, unprofessional service.
Thurmans serves the best burgers around! It's a small place so if you go during a typical lunch or dinner hours expect to wait at least and hour. Parking is also hard to find but if all else fails you can park at Schiller Park and walk, its only about a block and a half away. Believe me it is well worth the wait the food is awesome! I'm there at least twice a month and I try to avoid the rush.
My first visit to Thurmans was shortly before they were featured on the Travel Channel, they've gotten busier since then. Throughout my many visits to Thurmans I've gotten to know some of the staff and yes I agree they do take forever to get your check. But don't be afraid to speak up, if an employee walks by your table (your 'waiter' or not) ask for your bill or refill or anything else you may want, they will be happy to help.
Look at it this way, if the biggest complaint is that there's too long of a wait the must mean they are busy right? And that many people can't be completely wrong. Besides if you don't like it, fine by me, that just makes the wait shorter for the rest of us.
P.S. I strongly advise that you avoid Thurmans during the Arnold Classic, it is always full of body builders.
Pros: Great food, friendly staff
Cons: long wait
I have been to Thurman's before and have had to wait for a while-something you just have to expect-but once we were sat, it all went downhill. We were sat before two other tables of which one got drinks first and both got meals first-even though one ordered after us. We were continuously ignored and had to wait forever for our check. We have never dined and ditched, but it was tempting just because of having to wait for an excessive amount of time. The only reason I gave them 2 stars instead of was because the food was so good and it's not the A-1 Burger's fault our service was abysmal. Recommendation -SIT AT THE BAR. Even if the bartender/servers are slow, the GM will step in and help.
Pros: Excellent burgers
Cons: Horrible service
Lets start with the parking. There is none, it is street parking and you can expect a walk. That is fine being that is built in a neighborhood and the restaurant cannot really control the amount of street spots available. So we park and head inside, to a small area that is simply packed! We waited two hours to go into the actual eating area. Once inside we realized the issue, this is a bar! This is not a restaurant with a bar, this is a small bar that serves burgers. However, we were still very excited to eat. We had heard only good things and were wishing for the best. We ordered our burgers and began the next wait. After another 40 minutes our burgers emerged. As they brought them toward us the waitress says you can have this in a minute we need to borrow it for a picture. WHAT! They then put my food that I am going to eat in front of some other lady so that she could have her picture taken with it! No asking if it was ok. Just hold on this lady wants to touch your burger! The burgers were just simply mediocre. Comparing them to Brazenhead burgers they were bad. We saw our waiter one time, when he took our orders. We had to get refills at the bar ourselves! Nobody asked us if we could use anything, get us anything or if things were good. I have had bad service before, but not like this. Listen to the negative reviews, they are accurate. Save your money, save your time and annoyance and go somewhere that is happy to serve you. I will never go back, and I will never recommend them to anyone. There are much better places in Columbus to eat a good burger!
Pros: Big Burgers
Cons: Service, Price, Parking, Taste and Wait
Have been waiting to visit Thurmans, only to be disappointed with the entire experience. The okay burgers are not worth the wait or the bad service--trust me. I'm never going back.
Our wait time was at least two hours, but we were willing to wait for these "legendary burgers". Finally seated, served drinks and placed order -- never to see the waiter again until it came to boxes and checks. Another waitress brought us our food and after waiting a good fifteen mintues to be checked on, we went to the bar to refill our own drinks.
The burger itself was big but disappointing. The taste was not great. I had one on texas toast and the bread turned soggy. Completely agree with "Underwhelmed"'s review. I would never waste my time going back. If I'm going to wait that long for a burger, I at least want it to be good. Go to Brazenhead, at least you'll enjoy your food.
Pros: mello yello?
Cons: service, wait time, burger
Are the Burgers good, absolutely. Is it worth a 2 hour wait, NO! We went mid-week after lunch rush and only waited only 10 minutes, that was just fine.
I had the BBQ Burger w/ fries and it was good. You can order it anyway temp you want, I got medium and it was juicy and tasted good. It was huge, my Fiance' had a big chunk and I barely finished the rest and left a lot of fries.
Good place, not cheap and worth a short wait. This is the only time we have been without a 2 hour line and we have never waited, glad we did not. I would be bummed if I had to wait more than about 15 to 20 mins.
Pros: Tasty Burger & Fries
Cons: Potential Wait
Was not impressed!!! No flavor just a lot of food... guess people like quantity over quality. The wait is not worth it as you can expect it to take an hour or two. My suggestion would be go elsewhere unless you are dying to try (remember I told you so when you??re disappointed). Honestly Teds Montana Grill is better and Winking Lizard one of the best burgers too. I need to try Graffiti and Brazenhead. How does Thurmans get voted best burger in Columbus several years running??????
Pros: Cheap and lots of food.
Cons: Long wait and poor service.
We are new to Columbus and had heard The Thurman Cafe was the place to go to get an excellent burger. We decided to go on a Saturday for lunch as a family. We arrived to an incredibly crowded holding area with standing room only and ended up waiting 2 AND A HALF HOURS to get a seat. The food was rather bland and overpriced and the decor was a bit to be desired. We will never return.
Pros: Easy to get to.
Cons: Long (incredibly long) waits, poor decor, disappointing food
I've lived in Columbus for 8 years and finally made it to Thurman's for lunch. I was looking forward to it because I heard so many good things about the burgers. We had a group of 6 and arrived at 11:30 AM. The place was already packed and there were eight names in front of us. Finally, we were seated an hour later into a very tight booth. The waitress was friendly but after she brought out our orders (which were correct), that was it as far as service. I tried to catch her eye several times to ask for a take-away box and one of our party wanted a refill on his iced tea. Although at one point she was wiping down the bar, she couldn't seem to notice us. I got the Jack Cheeseburger, which was so soggy that I had to eat it with a fork and knife. And yes, the burgers come with chips so you have to pay extra for their fries. The fries were good but at $2.79 a plate ($3.99 a basket), too pricey. Here's the deal: If I have to 1) Park 3 blocks away 2) wait 1 hour to be seated and 3) pay about $15 - then doggonit, I want a waiter who pays attention. One of our party finally went to the bar to get me the take-away box (I didn't realize that's what she was doing, I was ready to do it myself at that point) and also grab our checks. (Surprisingly the waitress didn't even seem to have time to give us those.) I'm stunned by the amount of people who consider a long wait, inconvenient parking, and inattentive wait staff to be "part of the experience." Fine, you can have it. Listen, if this is a Columbus "landmark" (and been in existence for so many years), then for the love of pete... HIRE. MORE. SERVERS. Meanwhile, if you want a delicious burger and better service, head to The Rusty Bucket. Their burgers are delicious, juicy, and you can actually eat one without utensils and looking like a slob. (P.S. Chris1961, if you comment, I'll comment again. I think at this point we all know you're a die-hard Thurman's regular. To each their own. Oh, and I don't work for The Rusty Bucket, Easy Street Cafe, or McDonalds.)
Pros: big burgers
Cons: parking, slowslowslow wait, frazzled wait staff
These burgers are nothing to rave about. All burgers have to be cooked well-done (must not use that great of quality of beef then). They also are served with chips. Who serves burgers with chips? Ridiculous. They wouldn't even substitute fries for the chips. You have to order a whole basket. The service was very poor. Of course, we also waited in a long line. Go down a few buildings for a great burger at Easy Street Cafe. They are fantastic!
Pros: Good options
Cons: All burgers well-done, served with chips, poor service
This restaurant has been in the same location for over 50 years and is rather tiny. However, that is part of it's charm in my opinion. We waited for over 1.5 hours and that was fine.
The service is a different style. They will treat you like a regular even on your first visit and you can't be bashful. They might give you a hard time, but you can do the same right back to them. Thats what they expect. Food was pretty good. I had the Thurman Burger, which was as massive as they say. Only complaint I would have is that there was so much beef that by the end of the burger thats all I had. I needed more onions and such to go along with it. Fries were great. Its a busy, overcrowded family owned establishment... and thats why we love it!
Pros: Unique atmosphere and Good Food
Cons: There is a wait...
The legendary giant burger is not worth enduring the tight layout or brain dead staff. The plating is extra slobsville.
Pros: nice location
Cons: too cramped, slow snobby service, messy - just ok burger,
I can't believe that some of the last reviews have been bad. I make it a weekly to bi-weekly effort to go the Thurmans. Just from being in there, I can tell you that everyone in there has a good time. The people writing these complaints are probably the ones who want there butts wiped for them. The service there is different, but great. They don't baby you here, but they do have fun with you; it feels like a second home. The food is fresh, high quality, relatively inexpensive, and darn good.
I RECOMMEND THE BLEU CHEESEBURGER WITH BACON (and I like it rare). WITH A PITCHER OF LIENE RED.
There is usually a pretty good wait there, but I don't see it as a wait. My Thurman experience starts out in the lobby. Getting to the table is just the next phase. We get pretzel bites and a pitcher while we hang out in the lobby. If you go out with friends, then hanging out for an hour or two really isn't so bad.
I love the Thurman Cafe!!!
Pros: Burgers, Atmosphere, The Wait!!!
Cons: What are the drawbacks?
We heard about this place last year but due to the wait we had to leave and didn't get the opportunity to try this place in 08. Being from out of town we would not get the chance to taste this burger until this past week. There was a line even at 2:30 in the afternoon so it must be worth it to most. When we got seated the poor service took over. The waitress was irritated because one of our party went back to the car to retrieve his glasses. She would not take our orders and ignored our attempts to get her attention. When she finally did acknowledge us she was abrasive in her responses. We hoped it would stop there. Our food did come and we received exactly what we felt she would give us. Each of the orders in our party were incorrect --ie. no mayo meant to her extra, no mushrooms meant an extra layer mixed in with the cheese so that they could not be picked off. What ever was requested that not appear on our burgers showed up in extra amounts. The burger was large but not as tasty as I thought it would be-- the Fuddruckers burger is better. The Thurmon burger experience is not one to be repeated.
Cons: Rude-Nasty Waitress ruins visit
I've been twice in the last 3 months. The first time the service was so slow but the server was apologetic and the food was ok so we went back. The second time we were sat, and waited about a half an hour and no one came to our table! the server walked past us a number of times, talked to the two tables seated on either side of us and never even stopped to get our drink order. I watched her and the other server joke around with some patrons at the bar, have a sip of soda, stock some straws, and sit down. All the while we were never even acknowledged. We left. And yes, I've had the burgers and they are just ok. They wount even cook them to temp for you!
Cons: HORRIBLE SERVICE
The food was great, the service was good, and the atmosphere was awesome. We had a party of 9 and we waited for 2 hours on a Friday. I think that is pretty extreme even for that size party on a Friday night. But would definitely go back!!
Pros: GREAT food!!
Cons: Parking and waiting to be seated
Had a ham and Swiss sub bf had the thurmanator , slow service but worth the wait and small cost
This hole-in-the-wall joint is great for burgers. The amount you get is amazing and the taste is phenomenal. I have been an avid goer for 5yrs now. Service is slow at times and the walls are covered in items but definitely a must if you're in Columbus.
Bigger is not better here. Consistently soggy sandwiches swimming in grease, cheese, etc.
Not particularly good either. Go next door to Easy Street for a burger.
Pros: It's a local neighborhood bar/grille
Cons: ridiculously sized food that's nothing special
What else can I say but the worst service in the history of mankind. After seating after an hour wait at 4 o clock in the afternoon, we sat at our table for 10 minutes before we even got drink orders taken. After our order was taken the waiter didn't come by again until we got our food. After that we never saw the waiter again. After waiting 35 minutes after we were done eating for our bill, we left. If you want to know why you wait so long to sit down, you now know why. The food was ok, just big, not much flavor in the burgers. I've had better burgers at chain and qsr restaurants.
Pros: Great decoration
Cons: Service, Service, Service.
...you sink your teeth into one of their hamburgers. I've yet to have on I didn't like, but I recommend the Thurman for newcomers.
I love the ambiance, the staff, and the location. Thurman's is an all around winner. There is sometimes a long wait to be seated, but you'll see why when they do seat you.
Pros: Fantastic Food
Cons: There can be a long wait
I have been living in Columbus for seven years now and JUST found out about Thurman's. I took my friend from Michigan with me (for Columbus brownie points) and he loved it! The wait staff was outstanding, very personable and hospitable. We both ordered burgers and they were by far the best my mouth has ever tasted. Yes, we had a bit of a wait, but we were not complaining! We just entertained ourselves with a few brews in the waiting area. Please, tell your friends about this place. I can't believe I just found out about Thurman's after living in Columbus for seven years, seven.
Im bringing all my out-of-state friends to Thurman's for great food and atmosphere. Hey, even my Michigan friend loved Columbus while ranting and raving about Thurman's...
Ann Arbor 0
Pros: Service. Burgers. Ambiance. (dont forget to sign in!)
Cons: Are you serious?
I'd never been but my co-workers wouldn't stop talking about this place and the food. It's small inside but it doesn't bother you to wait for a seat. Everyone seemed to know each other. Perfect strangers are eager to talk to you. The servers were very entertaining and the whole place is covered with all sorts of items. You can even hang something up yourself.
The menu is huge, just like the burgers. My buddy wouldn't shut up about this "johnnie Burger" he had. Made with tequila. I couldn't find it on the menu but the waitress knew exactly what we were talking about. She said it was one of thier most popular burgers. I can see why! Huge juicy Burger with blue and horseradish cheeses. I've never had horseradish cheese but I'm sold! More bacon than I could handle. The best part by far was that it's cooked somehow with tequila. The flavor the tequila adds is amazing! It tastes so sweet and juicy! It's even served with a shot of tequila!
It came with fries but it's served without LTO. She said you could have it anyway you wanted it but my buddy said "go with how it comes. You won't be sorry!" Man! I wasn't! We all got the "Johnnie burger" and I'm bringing more friends back on Friday to have another!
Pros: The random people you meet. By far!
Cons: Took a minute to park. Worth the wait.
Went a while ago with a friend. We both thought the service was slow & unfriendly, and we weren't too bothered by the food. I love good greasy dive food just as much as the next person, but this didn't even come close. I had a ruben which was good but made with REALLY cheap 88 cents lunch meant. You know the kind I mean--what you can buy that's in the shape of a rectangle at the store and says "water added chopped meat" on the label. My friend had the A1 burger which not only was bland and dry, but came to the table with HAIRS in it (gross!). All we had that we really did enjoy were the cheddar french fries. Wont' be going back anytime soon.
Our party of 15 got there about 12:30 in the morning and were seated immediately, quite a feat for any size eatery. And I had heard of the burgers so I had the cheeseburger delux, which left room for the amazing huge and tastey whole chicken wings. I will be back the next time I am in Columbus!!!!
Been going there for over 20 years, and let there be no doubt...the Thurman *IS* THE BEST BURGER ANYWHERE! 3/4 pound, perfectly toasted roll, and toppings piled high. Choose from many different types, or build your own. And have it cooked the way you want it. 2nd place isnt even in sight! Thurmans should be on everybody's "Must go" list for burgers.
With that said, lets give some warning...the place is small...real small. Be prepared to wait a few for seating...longer for larger groups. They do have a large open waiting area...and Ive never figured out why they havent converted some of it to seating. Maybe its because they only have 2 wait staff working at one time, thus, wait service does suffer somewhat...be prepared to "wave down" your wait person for a refill on occasion.
Also, the burgers run about $8 each w/chips...a little pricey, but worth it in my opinion. Their other offerings are good too...their italian sub is top notch, and the pizzas not bad for a bar/food joint. And about that...the bar is open all the time, but this place turns from a restaurant, to a noisy bar at night, so be warned if planning on dinning late. The rest of the chow is good too...above average or better.
Parking can be tricky...on street only, so be prepared to drive around the block, and do a little walking.
If you are a "Thurman Virgin", and a burger person, its an absolute "must go". In fact, once you eat a Thurman burger, it is only then that you reach the rank of "Burger Connoisseur". ;)
Pros: Burgers, burgers, burgers.
Cons: Small. Parking. Service.
I've eaten burgers all over Columbus, this country, and a few others. This is the best burger joint I've ever been to hands down.
The servers have been working there for years. They're real people serving real food. They treat you as a guest and not as a customer.
Be aware that Thurman's is VERY small. They have between 10-15 tables and people tend to stick around after eating a huge Thurman burger. That being said, the wait can be around 2 hours long. They won't expand on principle. Know it. Accept it. Expect it. It's worth the wait.
Whenever I have people in from other cities/counties for any period of time, I make sure that I take them to Thurman's. This place has been a staple of Columbus dining and will continue to be so for year to come.
Pros: Great burgers. Great people. Great atmosphere.
Cons: Although the wait is long, I wouldn't have it any other way.
It kills me when people complain about either the service at the Thurman or the wait. Yes, there is a wait. It's a small place. People like to linger. Don't come with a large party or expectations that there won't be a wait, and you will be fine. Sign in, be cool, and don't harass the staff about when your table will be ready. Have a beer and play some games. I have been a regular at the Thurman for 13 years now and have never once had bad service. The staff is half the reason I am a regular there. If the servers are rude, more than likely you deserve it.
On another note - the burgers are good, but not the best in the city if one is a burger purist. The wings are another matter - I would stack them up against anyone's. If you want an upscale burger - go to The Rossi. If you want delicious wings or a big messy burger with a great atmosphere - come to the Thurman. Just leave your sense of entitlement at home.
Pros: Great food, great service, great atmosphere
Cons: Too many people know about it
The place only has about 10 tables, very cozy, very unique. There's tons of crazy stuff all over the walls that kept us entertained. The pretzel bits and pizza rolls were AMAZING. Have to get pretzel bits! The burgers were huge and good, but not as amazing as I was hoping. After reading all the reviews here I expected something out of this world, but was a little disappointed. Service was a little slow, but there wasn't a wait.
Pros: Pretzel bits!
Great huge burgers. Pretzel bits are the best. must have pretzel bits. Usually need more than one order.
Pros: Great tasting all American
Cons: So much food you can't finish. Not good for vegetarians
My 3 seconds of fame came while I was eating lunch at Thurman's and the Food Network was filming an episode there. The reviews are all true - not a first date place - not pretentious in any way - 2 fisted burgers - the BEST fries anywhere. My biggest decision is do I get the burger or wings with my fries? Sometimes I just get them all! You'll need a doggie bag if you do this though! The video game was Galaxia and Ms. Pac Man (I think) I love Galaxia, so this keeps me busy while we wait for a seat. The burgers are always fresh, huge and cooked just the way I like them.
Pros: Burgers, Fries, & Wings
Thurman's is usually busy on the weekends (not during the week) and the wait can be long, but the burgers are delicious, with a large girth.
Pros: Food, price, girth
Cons: long wait on weekends, limited seating, sometimes slow service
This place is awesome. Great atmosphere and great food. The burgers are the best and the biggest I've ever had. The dining area is small and the wait can be long but it's well worth it.
Pros: Prices, Burgers, Drinks
First off, I'm from Jacksonville Beach, FL and I'd crawl on my hands and knees for a Thurman burger!!!
I've been going to Columbus once a year for the last 10yrs. and Thurman's is must stop on my list. The Thurman burger is the most monsterous thing I have ever seen, with everything except the kitchen sink on it, it is insane!!! It takes 2 hands to eat and have a friend feed you fries because once you put it down you'll never get it off the plate again. Don't eat it like a "'girly man" with a knife & fork and definitely not a place to take a first date...does get messy and she won't want to watch the "spectacle".
The wait and service can be slow at times, especially on weekends, so I would suggest getting a stool at the bar. Thurman's has that real neighborhood bar feeling with the cozy atmosphere and ever changing decor...A definte must do if you are in Columbus.
Pros: Incredible burgers, wings
Cons: Parking, wait for seating
The wait isn't fun. Try to plan this one out and you'll still wait an hour. However, there's a sweet pinball machine to waste your time. Oh, there's also the burgers... quick and simple, they're phenomenal. I just found the place a month ago and have been there three times. If you're too trendy for a burger, go somewhere else... The Rossi would love your money and your drama. But if you appreciate a fantastic burger and fresh-cut fries, YOU HAVE TO TRY THURMANS. I've been on this earth for 30 years, but only felt alive since I had a Thurman burger. Maybe that was too far... maybe.
Pros: Food, ambience
I have tried burgers from all over the city, and other cities like Chicago and SF and you will be hard pressed to find any that can match the Thurman Cafe! The burgers are huge, the fries are flavorful and crisp, the atmosphere unique. I highly recommend Thurmans for lunch, dinner too but only if you have time to wait. This place is a hole in the wall and you will have to wait for a table at dinner time. If you want to be seated immedietly, go to one of the numerous chain restaurants in town and have a mediocre burger. If you want the best, the thurman burger is worth the wait!!
Pros: best burger in Columbus, great fries, great atmosphere
Cons: long waits at dinner time, service varies, no parking except street
If you can get past the rude servers...the food makes it all worth while! Killer onion rings, wings and the namesake...Thurman Burger. You must get the thurman burger at least once. Take a friend or two; it can feed a small army. I've had about a dozen or so and not once has the meat been bland. You can't go wrong here for good eats. The management needs to improve the service...THE SERVERS ARE RUDE!!!
Pros: Thurman Burger, Ambience, Wings
Cons: Staff, Service, Too small
You haven't visited Columbus, OH unless you've visited Thurmans Cafe. The food is outstanding. The place is small and usually crowded so don't go if you're in a hurry; but believe me the wait is worth it. I often order and go pick it up, No Wait, No worry about parking. They have a lot of cool things on the wall to look at and the servers are very nice, often in a hurry because they're busy but very nice. GREAT PLACE TO EAT!
Pros: Hamburgers, Atmosphere, Appetizers
Cons: Parking, Wait
I've lived in Columbus for a year now and am constantly amazed at what the locals consider to be good food. If you've ever cooked a burger on the George Foreman grill, you know what that bland tasteless hung of burger is like when its done. Tasting the burger at Thurman's last night reminded me of that. No flavor at all. Also got an order of onion rings that tasted fishy. Only edible item was the french fries and I have to say, they were great. Otherwise, horrible food and service.
Pros: not a chain, not in a strip mall
Cons: bad food, bad service, slow
I recently visited Thurman's before a Blue Jacket's home game to try and impress my date with the amount of red meat I could eat, true Columbus style. I gave an honest effort only finishing half of my delicious Blue Cheeseburger. He showed me up and made the whole Thurman Burger disappear, which is quite a feat! Here's a tip, outsmart the waitlist and belly up to the bar- you'll get your beers quicker. No plasmas, but at the bar you are close enough to see the score without it being neccesary to drop your burger, if you do you may never get it off the plate again.
Pros: lotsa beef, tons of grease, beer mugs w/ handles
Cons: messy hands, messy face, post meal food coma
I have lived in Columbus for 14 years and had my first experience with Thurman's today. What a burger. Fries were good too. It is a small place but we only had to wait about 15 minutes at 12:30 p.m. and the service was average to above. The short wait was certainly worth it once the burger came to the table. An hour and a half later... I need a nap!
Pros: Food, Value, atmosphere
Cons: Wait, parking
