Hands-down best pizza in St Louis! It's a hole in the wall crappy bar, but their pizza really surprised me. I wish I still lived in STL so I could still go here!

My dad works for Kraft Pizza Company, and I grew up on pizza. However, Black Thorn pizza is the absolute best pizza I have ever had. When you bite into it, the cheese just keeps coming. I had two slices and my stomach felt like it would explode but I wanted to keep eating! Put your order in early because it takes a long time to make, but it is definitely worth it!

Awesome deep dish style pizza. The sauce has a spicy kick to it which makes it stand out from other pizzas. Call ahead if you are in a hurry since you may have to wait anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour and a half but the restaurant has a fun, low-key atmosphere while you are waiting. Easily the best deep dish pizza in St. Louis (coming from a Chicago native)!

My favorite Chicago Style pizza in the entire world. Love the atmosphere. Great jukebox. Oatmeal stout on tap. Best pizza in St. Louis. If you are going for the Pizza call ahead and order your pizza as soon as they open. I would head up around the time they say it will be ready since they only have one pizza oven and each pizza takes and 45 min to cook. Great atmosphere- I love neighborhood bars.

I love going to Black Thorn!! My friends and I have been going there for a couple of years now and have never had a problem. The pizza is AMAZING, we always get the Chicago style. I can only eat two peices, even when I starve my self all day. I would recommend ordering the pizza before hand because it does take them awhile to make it. There is tv, dart boards, shuffle board, and an air hockey table. The pub is not dirty but it has that raw dirty look to it. It does get smokey up stairs but the down stairs is not bad at all.

well i thought i would check this place out since it got such high reviews. the pizza was really good but i definitely learned the definition of a dive bar. the bar itself left a lot to be desired. it was very unkept and i was doubtful about eating anything there. but the pizza was good! the only thing they have is pizza, cheese bread and some salads so dont expect variety. and they do have an air hockey table, which i thought was cool. i dont think i'll go back because of the dirtiness. no pizza is worth that lol

My husband and his buddy have been on a mission since Adamo's closed to find the best pizza in town. It's funny that I never get to go on their rendezvous do to schedule conflicts, however I do get to sample the left overs!

And let me tell you, no I personally have never been to the Black Thorn, yet my husband and his compadre have...and they have found their new place for their weekly craving!

My husband always saves me a slice, and WOW...even as a leftover, I have NEVER been more impressed. I'm ready to go and experience the place for myself. I have a three year old, and for those of you complaining about not being kid friendly, maybe your kids need manners ...no successful establishment would turn away income!...and if you know its a pub...and smoking is allowed...why are you taking them there in the first place? Just to complain?

Those that complain about bad service, more than likely have no idea what's involved in "serving" people. Especially people who can't wait more than 30 seconds for a beer, soda, or menu, or Ect and begin to YOOOHOO the wait staff. Is that how people get your attention where you work? The point of eating out is to RELAX and enjoy someone else taking care of the task of preparing and serving a meal.

So to the staff of the Black Thorn...all of this venting came of a piece of day old pizza that was AMAZING!....Can't wait to visit! Great place for our next girls nightt out!

Thank You!

Dave DiFani is not only responsible for bringing great pizza and fun softball to South St, Louis, he is also to blame for many marriages and several couples moving from suburban STL to the city once they discovered this jewel of a neighborhood. Dave was a true pioneer and hung in there to build this business when the neighborhood was less than desirable. Even through the carjackings, muggings, etc. of 20 years ago, the Thorn was a place to be. If this were in Chicago or New York all of you hipsters bitching about poor service and long cooking times would be raving about what an awesome place this was to meet. The Black Thorn is a place you must visit when in St. Louis and while you're there yuo might ask Dave to borrow one of his favorite books or play Battling Tops. This is an original place in a world of boring sameness. If you don't like unique, go visit some place where they wear 30 pieces of "flair"

Yes, you have to wait for 45 minutees to an hour to get your pizza, and Yes there are no waitresses. But, it;s a fun place to hang out drink beer and eat a different kind of pizza with a style all it's own, It's not quite a Chicago style pizza but it's filled with a ton of cheese and has thick crust. It's got a little extra kick to it, and if you eat more than two pieces your going to regret it.

Tips- Call ahead and order it, play shuffle board, darts, and be a man/woman and go to the bar to order for yourself.

All and all it's not the best pizza I've ever had but the place is fun and you gotta try it.

Not "kid friendly?" You've got to be kidding. I can take my 11-year old grand daughter there, and have for years, with no problems from the staff. I have two nephews (16 and 13) who show up every time they know we're going. They go crazy on the air hockey table and any other game they can get on, and they can belly up to the bar to put another soda on the tab. We've been there countless times, with no problems from the staff.

Some of the beautiful people and Greeks that show up to be seen are a different story, but we go early to avoid them.

Great pizza (I don't mind the wait since they serve Guiness in Imperial pints) that's ruined me for any others, great ambience, and I can walk there. Heck, they've even let us hold a couple wakes there.

The interior is dank, dark and yellow from years of smokers. The bathroom is crummy. The games are well worn. In short, it is a hole in the wall bar. But the pizza is the best deep dish in St. Louis. Don't bring your kids, it is a bar after all. Take another reviewer's advice and call ahead if you want your pizza shortly after you arrive. The deep dish pizza takes a long time to cook. It's as simple as that.

I like the place because I can sit and talk with my friends and have a few drinks while waiting for a delicious pizza.

I've been going to Black Thorn for the past 3 or 4 years now and what you have to realize before you even consider Black Thorn is that you need to order at least an hour before you go. If you don't have that kind of time, then don't go. When you place your order, they'll tell you how long it will take so adjust your travel if you don't want to sit around and have a few beers/play some games while you wait. This is not Pizza Hut, Imo's, Papa John's, or even Elicia's. You will have to wait for awhile but is it so bad to slow down in life?

I've read a few of these reviews that talk about bad service. The golden rule plays big at this place. I?ve sat at the bar and watched people come in and wave their hands at the barkeep trying to order a drink. That?s pretty rude and in turn they don?t get service. The guy behind the bar is the server, the host, the door guy, the dollar change machine for the games, sometimes helps in the kitchen, and oh yeah ? he?s the bartender too. So if you get in a big huff about having to wait for a drink, order your next drink when your first one is halfway down. If you?re thirsty just order a pitcher as it is easier for the bartender and easier for you.

Black Thorn is a relaxed, have a few beers, play some games with your friends, and when your food shows up - it shows up - kind of place. It isn't for everyone, but my friends and I (25-30?s, professionals, city-dwellers) all enjoy the place.

Cons: Can be smoky at times

Unless you are willing to wait 1-2 hours for mediocre pizza, avoid Black Thorn. They are also not kid friendly. I have seen them kick out responsible young customers who did not have an ID on them. The restaurant is also very smoky. Black Thorn is also small and will not be able to handle a large group. The servers have been rude the last two times I have gone. All in all, I would avoid Black Thorn if possible.

My husband and I recently went for pizza at Black Thorn after a year and a half. We had been craving it and finally went back only to be really disappointed. We used to love it and had taken many friends there over the years. We ordered our pizza with extra sauce as that was always my favorite part and not only was it not extra sauce, there was hardly enough sauce to cover the pizza, actually bare in spots. The other toppings were minimal also. Lots of thick crust and minimal toppings makes for a very dry pizza. We were really bummed and are not going to go back, unless we hear something changes, which I hope it does. We know the pizza takes a while and that is no problem, but just to get a drink at the bar, my husband had to stand in a line for over 10 minutes. Overall, not worth it.

Black Thorn used to be the best pizza in St. Louis, but I don't know what happened. Somehow its been lost. The dreamy cheese the wonderfully chewy crust. All Gone! Its a real shame. And the service, well thats another story. No one should be subjected to that kind of abuse. There also used to be a wonderful crowd of quirky folks that hung out there, now its the tragically hip and wannabes. I cannot recommend this place to anyone.

Cons: pretty much everything

The pizza here is not for the light hearted, literally. It may damage you if you're not in good health. The food is very rich; their pizza is loaded with cheese and other vices. Personally, I'm a sauce fan. Their pizza sauce is good and it's unfortunate they don't use more of it. I recommend asking for extra sauce and less cheese. One word of warning is that the service is a little slow. Things take time but most people agree, myself included, that it's well worth the wait. The place is particularly great for groups. The environment is comfortable and, best of all, they have darts. I love darts.

For anyone new to the area planning a visit to this south-side hangout I felt the need to provide some input. The place is what is... and it does it beautifully. So for those of you who provided negative reviews and to anyone who has never been, please take note? If you are looking for anything resembling a standard restaurant experience, please do NOT go to Black Thorn. If you are looking for service from a teenybopper waitress with a cute apron and tons of flair, please do NOT go here. If you are looking for a family place to take the kids, do NOT visit BTP. If you are in a big hurry, please steer clear of Black Thorn. However, if you are looking for a serious, thick crust pie with clog-your-arteries capability while you enjoy a solid (and cheap!) beer selection, head to Black Thorn immediately. If you are out to have a leisurely time with friends in a truly relaxed setting, then head to Black Thorn. Black Thorn Pub is and (I pray) always will be a truly fantastic neighborhood bar and pizza joint that forces one to slow down and hang out in an uncomplicated (read: perfectly dingy in all the right ways) setting. Black Thorn is a great deep-dish pizza and a truly fun, uncomplicated atmosphere.

In hopes of finding a place to satisfy my yearning for Chicago-pizza, I was once again disappointed. The pizza is not as good as it is hyped up to be and definitely not worth the wait, poor service, or incredibly smokey atmosphere. By the way did I mention the horrible service? By far the worse service of any restaurant in St. Louis. I have tried this place 3 times in hopes that I got unlucky on my first visit, but every experience was the same. I will never go there again.

So long as you aren't in a hurry the wait is definitely worth it. We always get the Chicago style with pepperoni, sausage and mushrooms. Love the cheese, and you don't even have to order extra cheese to get a ton of it. The atmosphere is VERY casual. Relax and play some bar trivia, or shuffle board. If you like this place check out Lemmons on Gravois. They serve the same pizza there and similar atmosphere with a little more room. The service was very friendly.

Black Thorn was what I use to call the only true pizza place in St Louis. Being from the west coast I was not too fond of the pancake type paper thin pizzas that are typical to St Louis. Black Horn was rich, creamy, spicy and fresh-- one piece weighed a pound! However, due to recent kitchen staff changes (at least that is what the management has told me) my last three visits were double the time (2+ hours per pizza despite the 45 min promise) Toppings are scarce, service is less than lousy, and the pizza is always over-done.. If you decide to eat at Black Thorne, make sure you dont eat on a glass table... if you drop a piece of the crust it will probably break your glass.

Pros: Your local neighborhood Pizza shop- descent Draft Beer Selection

Cons: Bad food, bad service, unpleasant atmosphere

i like this place. small neigborhood joint tucked into residential street corner. would've never thought to look for it there. bar girl can improve her customer service skills for pickups, waaaayyyy toooo smoky and the pizza is great. nothing fancy tho the flavors and quality shine.

just dont show me how you make it and i'm good.

The Chicago style pizza is so good! You have to wait for like 45 minutes but it is worth it! Get there early to grab a seat or you might was well take your pie home to eat it. Hole-in-the-wall atmosphere in a slightly scary neighborhood but a good time is always had by all!

Took 50 minutes to get our pizza even though there was only one other table when we arrived. When the pizza arrived my half barely had any sauce or cheese while the other half was fully loaded.

I found the quality to be inconsistent, topping selection insufficient (no beef?) and the service to be quite sluggish.

I recommend Shakespeare's Pizza in Columbia or Pantera's here in Saint Louis if you want great pizza.

Black Thorn Pub has to be one of the best pizza joints in St. Louis, if not the whole midwest. This can be seen by how busy the place is. I always try going on an "off" night when it won't be so crazy.

Amazing how great this place is how so few St. Louisans know about Black Thorn Pub and their pizza.

Provel is to provolone what Cheez Whiz is to cheddar. That being said, you won't find a drop of that crap in Blackthorn's killer Chicago-style pizza. You won't find anything else like this, anywhere in St. Louis. Plus, pitchers of Guinness are only $10!!! Bravissimo!

Pros: great pizza, great beer

Blackthorn makes the best pizza in St. Louis!! You have to try the deep-dish variety..... it just doesn't get any better!!! It is SO good -- great sauce and great ingredients. And it is cheap too -- a medium deep-dish is huge and only about $15-$20, and you will probably take home leftovers. It's worth the 45-60 minute wait!! Plus there is a great beer selection to keep you occupied while you're waiting.

Pros: Great Pizza, Somewhat of a dive, Inexpensive

Blackthorn has made me eat my words, this pizza is as good as any I've ever had. The sauce is absolutley delicious. Their thin crust has more mass than 10 Imo's pizzas. They have thin, pan, and chicago style. I think the pan is perfect. The cheese is real mozerella, which wouldn't be a big deal anywhere else in the country. The beer selection also expands on the bud/bud light/michultra bottles, with decent beer selection. Also, always get extra sauce, it makes this pizza.

Black Thorn Pub has the best pizza in St. Louis, hands down! I love St. Louis style, thin crust, but if I want a slice of real, traditional pizza...Black Thorn is where it's at. Skip Fortels, hit the Thorn!

In the words of Homer Simpson, the pizza at the Blackthorn is truly "groin grabbingly transcendent." The stuff to get is the Chicago style pizza, which is the diametrical opposite of the tripe marketed by the chain that rhymes with "chinos." Two layers thick, with a wonderflully spicy/sweet sauce. Sure, it takes 45 minutes for your pizza to come out and, yes, that is a hole in the ceiling, but there's Guiness on tap and you'll find no better pizza this side of Chi town (or perhaps including Chicago).

Pros: Pizza, Beer, Did I mention pizza?

Cons: Clogged arteries

Thank god the good folks at Black Thorn know the difference between the god awful Provel that Saint Louisians are in love with and good old Mozzarella. The pizzas are thich and doughy with a sweet herb heavy sauce, good cheese and excellent toppings.. I was in the pizza industry as a store manager and regional operations manager for Cottage Inn Pizza in Ann Arbor Michigan, I find this pizza to be one of the few palatable pizzas in this town.. Don't get me started on IMO's...........

Cons: softballers, drunks, noisy

Crumpled dollars stapled to the ceiling, video games circa 1982 and too-busy-to-care barkeeps: there's no place like the Black Thorn. Though it's a 21-and-up establishment (unless you're with parents), this blue-collar…
