I like to give service to local people, but I'm so frustrated, I will never even buy a light bulb from this place again. We even bought the snow blower from Tennies new. Had it serviced there twice now. This last time it took over 6 months to get it back and that was only after multiple phone calls while they tried to "locate" it. Now here we sit with a big snow fall, take the blower out and everything loosens up on it. From what I've seen, they can't even handle a simple servicing. The owner didn't like it when I called to ask what was up with this. Tried to tell me they have a "quality" staff. Well, that's not what I've experienced. I'm sure they won't miss our business, as they don't seem to communicate in a way that shows you they want your business.

The store really has high and low points. It's a family owned place, and I always try to deal with family-owned stores if possible. I was looking to buy a new zero-turn mower. A gentleman approached me and we discussed my needs. It was great - and I was pretty much sold on their store mostly because I felt really comfortable with the guy. I have a steep hill and wanted to see how zero turns generally handle hills. The gentlemen brought me upstairs to ask someone about how they handle hills. It turned out the guy I was talking with was the owner, and he was introducing me to his son who runs the small engine area. Two things became clear very quickly 1)the son was really knowledgeable about small engines and related stuff 2) he would be awful to deal with because he seemed to treat everyone as a complete nuisance. I left with a pocket full of cash and drove to the Home Depot and bought a really nice zero-turn. I've come back a few times for some other stuff and was always put off by the people working upstairs in the parts department. They definitely know their stuff, but as far as the customer service in the small engine repair, prepare for some abuse.

I have purchased and rented products from the Tennies family for over 3 decades and have had nothing but great experiences. I live in the Milwaukee area, but travel 30 miles north because I trust their expertise and their customer serivce has been excellent in my opinon.
I recently purchased a new lawn tractor to replace the one I purchased from them over 10 years ago and one of the brothers personally delivered it to me and spent nearly 45 minutes going over everything that I needed to know about the machine.

I have learned that working with a small familiy owned business, in almost all cases, outshine the large box stores when it comes to customer service and expertise. Tennies Ace Hardware is no exception.

My name is David Tennies. I am partner in my family owned buisness "Tennies Ace Hardware". I first would like to apologise on behalf of my family and employees if you have felt mistreated or didn't get the customer service that you would expect from one of my three locally owned stores. We have reviewed the comments as a company and have addressed the issues with all our employees at all our stores. We strive to be the "Most Helpful Hardware Store" in the communities that we serve: West Bend, Jackson and Kewaskum.

In response to the comments about our Small Engine Service Department; it has always been our rule to communicate to the customer what needs to be done with their small engine repair and their bill if it is going to go over and beyond the normal tune-up. We strive to fix our customers small engine problems right the first time to eliminate any further down time. We never have and never will put unnecessary parts in people's equipment that is not needed. Do we make mistakes on occassion? "Yes" we are all human beings. We will be glad to explain what we did to their equipment that was worked on and resolve any billing issues. We try our best to give the best customer service as possible. Sometimes, we do have to follow specific OEM manufacturers policies that customers may disagree with.

We employee 6 full time mechanics who are certified by Briggs and Straton, Kohler, Honda, Kowasaki, MTD, Poulon, Poulon Pro, Simplicity, Toro, Echo, Stihl and Husquvarna. We are an authorized warranty center for all of these manufacturers. We do warranty work for alot of big box retailers throughout Southeastern Wisconsin.

We have the one of the largest stocked small engine parts department in all of Southeastern Wisconsin. It is necessary that the customer have thier Owners Manual, Model Number and Serial Number with them at the time that they come in for small engine parts. This will avoid alot of frustration of getting the right part the first time in the heat of the season. There are thousands of small engines made throughout the years and they are all different..

We at Tennies Ace Hardware strive to improve our customer service everyday. Please feel free to contact me directly if you have any concerns at 262-626-1584. I am working in my stores on a daily basis 7 days a week.

Thank You,

David Tennies

Based on my experience, I would never again use their repair service (or patronize any of their stores). They gave me an estimate for the repair but the actual bill was over 100% greater than the estimate. Worse, they did not need to do the repair that they origionaly thought was needed but charged for it anyway. They also replaced parts that were not authorized or necessary. I gave it a rating of one star only because a negative star rating was not one of the choices available.. To be on the safe side, try one of the other repair shops in the area.

There are two Tennies stores in town. They are very different places.

The downtown store is friendly. You can't get half way down the aisle without someone asking to help, and their help is like an old small town hardware store. Go in if you need a solution, and they'll pick all the parts you need and explain to you how to use them. They stock component parts to repair power tools. Fix flat tires on garden equipment while you wait.

The store in the strip mall on the edge of town is like every other strip mall place. Cold, and unfriendly. I have had bad luck, particularly with their rentals.

I am a small business owner myself striving in a tough ecomony with major corporations taking away my business. With that said- I support the small guys, but I can no longer support this establishment for the sheer fact that they lack in customer service. Twice in the past year I have used their repair or rental services and twice I have walked away feeling like a "peon"- and what makes it it worse- it was the owner himself who told me or my husband curtly, "I do not have time to deal with you." Let me make it clear that in both circumstances- we were neither complaining or nor making a fuss- we were just simply returning equipment or trying to pay for services rendered with smiles on our faces. I do not understand how someone can remain in business when they talk to customers the way he did to us. If he hates owning a business and handling the everyday challanges it takes to survive, my only suggestion would be to get out of the business. He is the reason why I unfortunately will be going to Walmart or Home Depot to pick up my next monthly $1000 bill worth of equipment I need for my own small business. I suggest you find a different place yourself if you want to be treated like somebody slightly more important than the owner of Tennies measures us as.
