I worked at the former version of the Boiler Room for some time.We WERE drunk and high the whole time. Actually, I was mainly just high because I didn't work at night. If I worked at night, I probably would've been sorta drunk some of the time. Speaking for myself, I provided excellent customer service and the music was amazing. Ice Cube 'Predator' and a cup of coffee = yes please.

Best job ever.

Customer shout outs: Denny, Tina, Big Tony, Al, Little Tony, Edward, Faye, Electric Fetus dude, Indian Jeff, Roland (j/k), Steve Stephanie, Di and Buddy , Larry, what up Butter Chips, Marie, Trigger the dog and his owners, Lisa and Gracie, Jack the dog and his dad Andy, Jon Davis, Big Ben, Sandwich Family (what up old mustard dude?) and the list goes on. .

And, I think the 'new' boiler room has really good coffee. It is nice but maybe a little boring.

Community was what was the essence of the old Boiler Room.
Homeless people sat inside and discussed issues of the day,
people came with their dogs, the help became friendly once
they got to know you. It took awhile but I am not a person that
thinks people should bend over backwards and kiss the ground
I walk on! At least not for $7. an hour! Who are these people??!@!!! It was like going into a livingroom and people of Square
are not afraid to engage in conversation. The community is
bright articulate, poor, arty, fun loving and I just love sitting
outside sippin or inside chatting it up or meeting my arty
friend Faye and looking at the art displayed, including hers
on the wall! I am looking forward to coming soon!

I'll agree- the previous owners were awful: the music was blaring, they seemed drunk or high the entire time they were working, and it was often empty, OR filled with questionable clientelle.

New owner- PHENOMENAL. Young guy, in his twenties, introduces himself to every person he serves, walks around and checks on people, white mochas are awesome, and he has attracted a much different clientele. My boyfriend lives across the street- I come here every Sat/Sun morning to study. (he's not from Seattle, I overheard him discussing his roots in Burnsville..)

Don't believe the hype. As long as this business is attached to Steve Frenz and JAS (now under the guise of The Apartment Shop)
I would not support it. He is one of most irresponisbile slumlords in Minneapolis (do some research on bugs in MPLS apts. for example), a bigot and a thief. He mistreats his tenants and employees alike. A real liar's liar.

Good to my word I heard from a coworker the Boiler Room was opening back up today and stopped in if for any reason to get out of the cold. The coffee was sure good ( hot) and the oatmeal was excellent! The place was immaculate and the service better than I had expected. Nice art work on the walls too.
Perhaps all is well as it is new to this Seattle guy who opened it up. Lets see if it continues......

The only time I went there, I was met by complete indifference from the guy behind the counter, asked for a sandwich, and started to make it. He never really said anything. When his buddy came in to order a drink, he stopped in the middle of making my sandwich and left it sitting there to chat with his buddy and make his drink, even though i had ordered first and he was already in the process of making my sandwich.

The sandwich was overpriced.

At any rate, the joint is closed now. Can't say I'll miss the crap service. (Maybe that's why its gone)

I hope the owners of the Cafe' are listening to the strong consensus that staffing choices need to be more customer friendly...eventually, that will make or break it.
Gotta say, I do appreciate Jennifer L.'s comment that "Yes, we are the customer, but the (paraphrase: Staff, barristas) are also only human." I am glad the Boiler Room supports local art, and is Dog friendly, and they need to make sure that all of their staff know that service, AND hospitality...are their job...not just something to do for their "cool" friends.

The boiler room, yes it has its good and bad elements but take a moment and consider this: the owners put nearly no money into the place, they have have cheap flimsy tables, the owners provide no means to cool place in the summer unless you consider the single window air-conditioner that has an effective impact of 3 feet and one fan that takes the 90-100 degree tempts down a half degree. The things they ought to do are many but oh well.

Even with these negative aspects they draw business... how is that possible. They have three strong elements going for them: 1) good coffee, 2) Cool baristas that if you give a chance, will become friend, 3) a nice variety of music.

There are cool people that work there but there is on I want to write on today, Kimi. She is recognizable by dark short hair, a Rosie the riveter like presence. She knows all the regulars by their dogs, she always seems happy to talk to you for a moment between making drinks and running the business.

There are some nut jobs that frequent the place, just today I was there and the place was packed. A man sitting at a large table, a guy who goes there a lot, never with a drink or any purchases. He just wants to surf the web for 8 hours and be in his world and not seem to care about others. This guy who never talks to anybody that I've seen, was enraged when Kimi asked him if he would move to a smaller table so a large group could sit at his, the much larger one. The man went into a tirade, calling Kimi a racist, and making round after round of insult. But this is the sort of thing happens of course... but even when treated like dirt, she took it in stride. Kimi said well okay then... instead of yelling back at him and went back to making drinks, he stormed off, all pissed off for really no reason. It's hard to see things like that and not want to comment on it.

Do I think it could be a better coffee house? Yes, if the owners invested a few hundred dollars once a year but even with their stinginess in mind, the place is worth going to, especially once you've make a few friends there.

Despite the bad days the baristas may have, I have coffee and lattes there fairly often. I like the free wi-fi, coffee punch cards, and being able to listen to a huge variety of music. May be a bit over-priced, but equal to the standards. Punch cards help.

As far as bad service, I still tip even if the staff is inattentive. It's a job I would hate and I would be cranky too, especially when customers don't tip, I have a high chance of getting robbed, verbally attacked and fired by my boss, plus probably have another job and might be a student as well.

I do notice that they are more friendly when they recognize the customer and get a friendly greeting. Yes, we're the customer, but at the same time the baristas are human.

I like it. Quirky neighborhood place. Eggs in a coffee cup. The staff is always kind in my experience. When it's busy it might take 2 minutes longer but well worth waiting.

I've never thought the staff was very pleasant, but I like to support our local businesses. Today I decided to stop in and was completely ignored. One employee was cleaning and the other was stacking cups. Both saw me standing there and both just kept looking out of the corner of their eyes as if hoping I would just leave... which I did... forever. Walked a little further to Caribou and found they actuallly like to have customers.

Maybe I'll come back in the winter. Place is okay but on hot summer days it is fifteen degrees hotter in the shop than outside. THere is one measly window air conditioner in the whole shop. Everyone in the place was complaining about it so it can't just be me. Meh.

This place doesn??t suck nearly as bad as many of these reviews would have you believe. I go there often and have never received rude service or bad coffee. The food is good, and the staff is very friendly. The shop itself is quite stylish, spare and modern, with one of the coolest bathrooms I??ve seen in this city. If I had to complain about something, it would be that it??s often miserably hot there in the summer. All in all, it??s a nice shop in an interesting neighborhood.

The service has been okay to me in the Boiler Room besides one girl - I asked for no foam on my latte (I know, wow, how high-maintenance could I be, asking her to not do something). She fixed me with a withering stare and said, completely snotty, "So, what, you want me to make it again?" I said no, I would just like her to take the foam off and fill it with milk - I have gotten lattes 1/3 full of foam there and that's not what I want to pay for, I want to pay for 20 ounces of espresso and milk. She slammed things around behind the counter and for weeks afterward I was treated with complete indifference by the staff, who had previously been nice to me - so obviously she talked smack to them about me. I have worked in coffee houses for years and if I had treated someone that way, I would have been fired - only I never would have treated someone that way - it's effing foam & you didn't listen to my order, so you screwed it up. Fix it and quit acting like you have a hard job!

The Boiler Room is under new management and has greatly improved. Most of the employees are great and there is a very "diverse" crowd. Good music, Spam, decent coffee... an unpretentious and humble place.

I agree with your negative assessment of the boiler room. I am a former employee. The owner, Ann, was the reason that place was so awful - it is currently under new ownership and I'm unsure if it's any better now.

Issues: She told all of the employees, when hired, that they would be making at least ten dollars an hour with tips. Base rate pay was about four dollars an hour. However, customers rarely tipped. (I never used to tip baristas, but I sure do now that I understand the system. If you can afford to buy a four dollar espresso, you can tip. I didn't expect the seniors on a fixed income who bought the 75-cent cup of coffee to tip.) When you are a janitor, therapist to the whiny customers, barista, and short-order cook all for 4 bucks an hour, you lose patience fast.

It was also dangerous, since we were held up several times at gunpoint.

She fired people left and right over bizarre, obscure reasons (one was fired after his wife was fired over a scheduling mix-up, because ann didn't want to be reminded of her, leaving them with kids to feed and no jobs.)

Stuff like this created a horrible atmosphere. On one occasion, she actually hit me, and berated me, in front of a crowd of customers when i entered something wrong on the cash register - my first error, and an easy one to fix!

She also made a lot of the food at her house, which seems...unclean, illegal?

I really want to support this place. It's locally-owned, a great physical space, and a short crawl down 3rd Ave for me. However, the staff is so...shiteous. Really, I'd like to be more constructive, and of course they are not all shiteous, but the ones that are more than make up for their sh*t-free counterparts. Here's the deal: I don't want a heaping cup of disdain. Indifference, sure. Assiness, not at all. You may not like making my order, but it's paying for your job. Suck it up. And please, for the love of god: you yell at the homeless people popping in to use the bathroom, but coo over the constantly barking dog? Unless that homeless person is crapping on my paper or screaming in my face, they don't bother me at all. The constant barking of a nervous canine? THAT interferes with breakfast.

Because I am a notorious crank, I've wrangled some friends to join me the past few weeks, friends who usually confirm my crankiness and tell ME to suck it up. Not here. One friend was so mistreated, SHE wanted to write a letter to the owner.

Bummer. I mean, there are much bigger things. But, still. --sigh--

While Caffetto might be "Best Nonalcoholic Late-Night Hang" (named as such by Mpls. St. Paul Magazine, December 2007), citing "Caffetto cranks the best tunes through its PA" as the first reason, Boiler Room is more subtle and not 'indie' enough, I suppose, to reach for such a grandiosity.

I happen to know both someone who used to work at Caffetto and someone who works at Boiler Room (not the same person), and each of them have had run-ins with 'problem' customers. The customer is, of course, always right, but I think that a review where it's written that an employee berated a guest using swear words is hard to back up as nothing more than hearsay and probably exaggerated when the reviewer is so angry, maybe justifiably so.

I did, as it turns out, happen to be there on the second day in question in the review saying that the barista told someone to get the (expletive) out. The customer (angry reviewer) was overheard saying to the barista "what's with the music?" (it happened to be Elton John, not say, some death metal or offensive gangster rap or something) The barista behind the counter asked if the customer had a problem. The customer said yes, and the barista DID say something to the effect of it being his place to say what music was played and if the customer didn't like it, he didn't have to stay. The barista was being harrassed (for listening to Elton John! come on!), and if he told the customer to "get the hell out," which I believe is what was said, I don't necessarily blame him. The customer may be always "right," but the barista is a person, too.

That said, my friend who works at Caffetto has had problems with customers who complain about the music being too weird or too loud, and look where that got Caffetto.
For every angry reviewer, there are 100 regulars who don't write reviews because they are busy enjoying their coffee at Boiler Room, an employer of human beings who have bad days just like everyone else.

For every angry reviewer, there are 100 regulars who don't write reviews because they are busy enjoying their coffee at Boiler Room, an employer of human beings who have bad days just like everyone else.

The Boiler Room is the worst coffee shop in Minneapolis, if customer service and friendly atmosphere are any judge.

This is because the staff treats the customers like dirt, and verbally abuses them. It betrays an attitude about customers that penetrates everything else they do. About a year ago a friend of mine remarked to an employee that they're technically not supposed to impose a minimum charge on credit card purchases.

The woman behind the counter called her an inappropriate name and told her to leave. Needless to say, she did. Every time I've suggested buying a cup of coffee there since the answer has been a definite no. Today was different, though--with some cajoling, I convinced her this morning to come with me to the Boiler Room for a cup of coffee. We were nearby and didn't really want to ride to the other side of town.

The first thing I noticed was that the prices had been marked up since the last time I was there. I don't know if it changed ownership, but I haven't seen its owner there for a while. The coffee was burned and old--I had to put cream in it to make it palatable. And the music was loud and awful. Basically, I'm of the mind that people pay coffee shops for coffee and environment. We don't pay to be subjected to the musical tastes of the help. If the environment is distracting, it's within a customer's rights to bring up the subject.

I didn't like the music--nobody at my table did. I asked the guy behind the counter about the music. He told me to "get the #$@^ out, if you don't like it. It's my shop and I'll listen to any #$%@ing music I want."

So I did. My friend was right about that place. The Boiler Room is the worst coffee shop in Minneapolis, based on experiences of their customer service and hostility towards patrons. I'll never go back, even though they're in my neighborhood. This is my experience--feel free to try it but you've been warned.

I love the Boiler Room. The coffee is always excellent and the staff is great. As for Mr. Rude and Dissatisfied, maybe he needs to adjust his crappy attitude. FYI, dude, you can't burn eggs that are steamed, and you were probably treated like ass because you are one.

I've been to the Boiler Room on more than a few occasions, don't ask me why. The food is terrible and you only have about a 1/4 of the menu to choose from because they are always out of everything. The coffee tastes burnt and as if it has been sitting out for hours. I've only gone there out of convenience in the past but I am done as of last week. I've never been treated so badly at a restaurant before. The woman at the counter, who I presume is the manager, took my order with a look of complete disdain on her face and then took about 30 minutes to prepare it when there was no line and then brought over and practically slammed the combination of burnt eggs and toast onto my table. I don't recommend this place to anyone.
