.

Having just recently moved to the Buffalo area for graduate school, I've been looking for a good Irish pub. I'm not looking for the pseudo commercialized American-Irish pub, but somewhere I can get traditional Irish food and a pint of Guinness. Rafferty's wasn't it. For a place billing itself as an Irish pub, there were a few things lacking from what I was looking for.

1. There was no traditional Irish food
2. It wasn't a pint.
3. It wasn't Guinness.
3a. It was Murphy's, so at least an Irish beer, but not as good, in my humble opinion.

I instead had their mushroom burger and the aforementioned Murphy's. The burger was good, though not cooked to order (my "medium" was more like a "well"). The bar staff, for a Friday afternoon with about half a dozen total customers, were friendly with the regulars, but made no attempt at engaging the newcomer. They were prompt and courteous, but nothing more than a perfunctory taking of the order and giving of the bill.

The two TVs had different versions of ESPN on, which was perfectly fine with me until they switched one (the one who's sound was turned up) to Fox News. It's not so much the particular choice of media outlet, it's more that there are only a handful of things that I want to talk about at a bar and politics does not make that list. When I paid my bill and left, there was no "See you next time" or any other response from the bartender to encourage me to come back.

All in all, if you're looking for a place to go, have a beer and a burger to watch the game, give it a shot. If you're looking for a place to get some bangers and mash and wash them down with a pint or two, look elsewhere.

Pros: Food is ok.

Cons: Not welcoming to newcomers.
