If you like to wait around ALL day - EVERY day waiting for them to call you and tell you when they will be there that day - then Gateway is your Hospice. We have held meetings, of which they forgot about. They have promised to send out a grief counselor to help my Mother, who is dying, within a week to help lower her anxiety and crying - yet that has yet to happen. They order medications that I have 90 of and don't ever use; but fail to order medications I use multiple times per day and have 3 days worth; also YOU need to keep track of ALL of the medications so that YOU can tell them what you need. The Aides are so-so, they have showered my Mother and returned her downstairs with soaking wet hair for it to dry on its own, without consideration for her appearance or her health and the possibility of getting sick; they shower her and leave all the dirty clothes and towels behind; overall this Hospice requires YOU to do 95% of the work and they merely just call the pharmacy for meds (for which most of the time ARE wrong and a waste of Medicare dollars); they will help clean up your loved one but you need to do the finishing work; they have not ONCE brushed her teeth - so Gateway will do a horrible job overall in ALL categories. The ONLY thing I like is the fact that they have Jack Heck, MD on staff and his knowledge of medications is the best in Pittsburgh and he can stabilize your loved one and help them with their pain. If there was a way I could just sign up for HIM only and skip ALL the rest of the Gateway Hospice crew, and hire my own staff - I would in a heartbeat, because I am doing the majority of the work anyways and they are being paid an enormous sum of money every month from Medicare for YOU to do ALL the work. May I recommend you get Valium for yourself, cotton for your ears to block out all the weekly lies they tell you on how it is going to change; every Wed they hold a team meeting to iron out the issues so that they don't continue and from that point on, everything yet again changes from staffing, hours, aides showing up without calling first and YOU get to stay at home, trapped with your loved one (instead of them ENJOYING their last few months) waiting for them - what a ridiculously unorganized, overwhelmed company with serious management skills, lack of oversight and understaffing that will profusely lie to cover themselves at all cost. A Nurse will come to the home and bill $700 for EACH 15 minutes - outrageous when YOU are telling the RN what you need, what the patient needs, etc etc etc. I have handed them typed up notes week to week with what is needed, etc and I do not believe that this is what Hospice is to be; they are supposed to HELP the patient AND the caregiver, but in fact, they will charge Medicare an exorbinant amount of money and YOU WILL DO THE MAJORITY OF ALL THE WORK! Currently my Mother has a patch on her bottom for a pressure sore that should be changed DAILY; however, it has been 6 days and it stinks to high heaven - you want to gag at the smell and she feels so uncomfortable she doesn't want to have company because of it - so she has withdrawn from friends visiting due to Gateway's sloppiness and carefree attitude. These should be her best 6 months of her life, when in fact, she is now terminally ill and must hide in her home, trapped by odor, and waiting for them to come because they cannot even tell us whether they will be there in the morning OR the afternoon - a huge window of time like that - they are NOT even organized enough to narrow it down to that at all. Frightening, frustrating and NOT FAIR at all to the patient or to the family.
