SEE ZENDA FOR FANTASTIC RESULTS!!!

by Channy Vo

Zenda was great! She helped me to decide on which style would fit me the best. Her specialties seem to be the Katie Holmes and Victoria B. haircut . Also, she is great with foils and daring colors!

Pros: Energetic and helpful

Go to Christina!

by Michelle Leonardo

I am the reigning Miss Teen United States-World and I am constantly in the spotlight. My hair is always being damaged from being straightened and curled. The James Joseph Salon graciously sponsored me throughout my reign with my main stylist as Christina. All I can say is she is amazing! I have never had a stylist be able to blend me layers as well as she does. The cut made my hair look so much healthier and it didn't have the choppy layers most artists give you. She also highlighted my hair, this was sort of a spur of the moment decision but I am so glad I got them! They look awesome and spice up my hair so much! Too top it off she is a total sweetheart and keeps you satisfied! I highly recommend going to Christina!!

Hot cut, High energy!

by simon311b

So I was on Newbury Street shopping for sunglasses, and I noticed that the salon under the sunglass store was jam-packed and had a sign in the window - Best Haircut Under $50. I thought to myself, "Self. You should try out that place." Two weeks later, I needed a haircut and went in. Wow! It was the best haircut I ever! I saw Kashmir. She's cute as a button and really knows what she's doing. The salon has a great buzz, yet I never felt forgotten. It was a great experience from start to finish.

Pros: Skilled haircut, great energy

Cons: low ceilings

Ashley G. Should just be called AMAZING

by KaitlinABC

I have lived in Chicago, New York and now Boston and have never had such a phenomenal hair stylist in my entire life!!!!! I gave JJStudio 5 stars for their great service but especially for Ashley's fabulous talent!!!

Ashley ( along with all of the stylist at JJStudio) will never let you leave her chair unhappy with your haircut or style. The first time I went to ashley she cut my hair for over an hour because I kept changing my mind and asking for more layers or to cut my hair shorter. I left 100% satisfied and have been going to ashley for all of my hair needs. With Highlights, she is an artist!!! i felt like she worked on my hair as if it were her own personal masterpiece! She blended all of my many different hair colors to work together and look so incredibly natural. I have gone from light brown, to super blonde highlights, to very dark brown almost black hair and she always makes my hair look great!!! Ashley just knows what she is doing and takes such pride in her work. Very personable and super easy to talk to! Not only is she a great stylist but a great person as well. She makes the whole experience marvelous and enjoyable. So happy to have met her! I have truly been blessed by the hair gods and I strongly recommend her!! Many of my friends have gone to her and love her as much as i do. My newest friend who just moved to Boston made an appointment with her today. I'm not the only one in love with her talent : ) Try it out for yourself you will not be disappointed!

Pros: Ashley

Cons: nothing

James Joseph Studio is the Best of the Best!

by Aldo44

12/7/08 - The Sunday Science Project is back!!!!! But I am not a Science Project any more, my hair looks better than ever. And it is getting closer and closer to the style I am looking for. I received so many compliments on my hair I lost count, it made me feel like a new woman, and I thank Kylene for that! I would give you 10 stars if I could! I apologize for giving Grant a new name; previously I referred to him as Graham. Thank you guys it was a great morning, and again, I love, love, love my hair ... see you in 6 weeks. I hope you all have a wonderful Holiday.

11/2/08 - Today I went to Kylene at James Joseph Studio in Medford. This was the first time I had ever been to a James Joseph Salon and poor Kylene was really put to the test! I had my hair done a week ago at another salon; my roots were red/pink/plum brassy awful with a hair cut to match. Kylene took one look at me, told me what needed to be done and she did it. She took a mess and did a magical makeover. Not only is all the red/pink/plum brassy gone, but I have beautiful highlights, and a short hair cut that is fun, classy, modern and has movement! She did a wonderful job, I feel like a new person. I also want to thank Kelly for booking me and Grant for his suggestions, you are all wonderful. Thank You! Thank You! Thank You! You have a client for life. I cannot thank you enough ? you are truly the Best of the Best! Grazie Infinite?!

Pros: I have only good things to say about James Jospeh in Medford

You'll love this place and the amazing Eva

by Lowellgirl

I've spent my life chasing the perfect haircut. From Supercuts (I know, I deserved to look bad), to the dizzying array of high-priced salons on Boston's Newbury Street, I've plunked down as much as $300 for drop-dead-gorgeous hair, only to feel dissapointed, super broke and super stupid.
I started to blame my hair. Maybe trying to transform this long, straight, part-down-the-middle hair into something drop-dead gorgeous was, well, unrealistic. Then I met Eva, whose scissors are truly a magic wand.
This girl can cut. Eva is more than a hair stylist. She is an artist who knows her medium.
For the record, my hair isn't the easiest to work with. It's pin straight with a kickin' cowlick above my right eye.
I wanted to keep my length but have some style. Maybe even leap into bangs. Eva really listened to what I wanted and took the time to study how my hair moved.
Eva knows hair texture and shape, and how to make a cut compliment the contours of your face.
Friendly and confident, as Eva snipped, she explained how the hair would fall, what works and what doesn't.
When she was done, I had what I was looking for my entire life. A conservative look for my career but with a little edge to keep it sylish and interesting.
After my first visit to Eva, I was standing in line for coffee when two women told me I had beautiful hair.
After the fourth visit, I know my life-long search is over.
My straight hair has shape and blends flawlessly. Even my cowlick behaves, and every cut grows out beautifully.
It's like I was born with great hair. All it took was a trip to Eva's chair to realize it.
Thank you Eva. You love hair, you love people, you love your job and it shows!
Everyone at James Joseph, especially Eva's fantastic assistant, Anastasia, has been friendly, fun, and provided great service in a relaxed atmosphere.
Visit Eva. You will get a haircut that enhances life.

great haircut at a great price

by meg4

I got a haircut from Kashmir about a month ago. First off, she actually LISTENED and did EXACTLy what i said. she understood what I wanted, without me having to use the actual hairdresser terms (who knows those terms anyway). She didn't get mad when I decided mid-haircut I actually wanted one more inch off...and my hair STILL looks absolutely fantastic. She was friendly, didn't rush, and showed me how to style my hair when I asked instead of rushing off to her next appointment or doing some BS job of showing me. The shampoo girl was also really nice. The one bad side..the front desk is slightly rude, but if you're aware of that, and don't let it get to you, they'll warm up to you and won't give you problems.

Pros: great haircut for a great price....what more could you want?

Cons: front door staff...but even they're not that bad.

Worst haircut

by jamesbill

I had a haircut from kylene. Let me just say I came out worse than I came in. She was rude, didnt seem like she cared to cut at all even though she's supposedly an "advanced stylist." It seemed as if i went to supercuts and wasnt worth the 55$ at all. Let me also point out that I wanted a simple cut normal cut thats even. And let me point out that I am a man. I cant even imagine what she would do for more complicated haircuts. I've been here twice with two different people and both times, they have messed up. If you want the same haircut for like 10$ go to supercuts!

Pros: None

Cons: worst haircut

Very Bad

by tim12345

I really wanted to like James Joseph but my haircuts were horrible. I gave it three tries, each with a different person. The last one I had was by kylene or someone. I came in asking for a simple cut. Nothing crazy. First of all she made me wait 10 minutes before she showed up. Second of all, her technique of cutting was all over the place. My hair is longer from the back than it is on top. Some parts of the back of my head are longer than the rest. She didn't seem to care about cutting and I felt like she wanted to get it over with. It was definitely a waste of money and my search for a good haircut place in Boston goes on. I heard Brandon Keith is very good so I'm going to give that a try. Very disappointed..

Cons: Bad stylists

Great experience at JJ Studio Boston

by rocknrolla

My experience at the James Joseph Studio in Boston on Newbury was very positive. I had never been before, though it was recommended by several friends, and I saw the stylist Ashley G. because she was available when I wanted an appointment. She was tremendous. Skilled, communicative, careful to do what I asked, and very friendly in a genuine, down-to-earth way. I have blonde hair that needed highlights and she blended my roots with my older color perfectly, and suggested a toner that really helped to brighten, blend and give the color shine. She was very responsive to my requests for my haircut, and was careful not to cut more than I asked, which seems to always happen. I feel it is the best color/haircut I've probably ever gotten, and the prices, though not cheap, are not exorbitant at all for being on Newbury and getting a great cut. I agree with other reviewers that it would be more convenient to be able to tip on the credit card, leaving cash or a check can be a pain. The only remotely "eh" thing about the entire experience was the quasi-attitude of the front desk staff, who were short with me when I called to make the appt., and just weren't overly friendly at check-out either. Considering that's the moment when you're handing over a bunch of dough, it just is always nicer when the check-out people acknowledge that through a friendly attitude. They were not rude, just kind of short and brusque. Overall, a very good experience. Go see Ashley, especially if you're blonde!!

Pros: Great blonde highlights, decent prices

Cons: tips must be cash/check

Good service, great cut

by chlorinator

I found out about JJ Studio in the Best of Boston 2006, and, while the article had recommended Michelle, I found she was not available when I made my first appointment about 1.5 years ago. I got an appointment with Lindsey (chosen randomly based on schedules), and she gave me far and away the best cut of my life. I've never been good about coming up with a good concept of how I want my hair to look, much less being able to successfully articulate what I want, but Lindsey was able to take my vague descriptions of length and style and give me something fabulous. I've been to her several times since, and on my last visit, I decided to cut my hair short for the first time in 10 years (having had a traumatic experience with a short hair cut in the 5th grade). I have a round face that doesn't take short hair particularly well, but she made it work.

The first time I went, I had the same issue with the weird tipping procedure (i.e. you can pay with a credit/debit card, but you need to tip in cash, although they'll let it slide if you are new), but it wasn't that big a deal to bring a little cash along. The general service was also good.

Sadly (for me), Lindsey has been promoted to the salon (along with Michelle), and thus now charges more than I can afford for a hair cut. To be honest, as a student with little money, I was really pushing the purse for what I paid at the studio, but I felt it was well worth the price for such fabulous hair. So, while I can't recommend any one stylist in particular (unless you want to shell out for the salon location prices), I refuse to believe that I somehow managed to luckily get assigned to the one person in the studio who could cut hair well. I think they really put a lot of effort into good training, and I suspect one's experience with any stylist there would be as good as mine. And, if nothing else, the shampoo girls give a killer head massage. ;-)

Pros: great cut, nice clean atmosphere

Cons: parking is probably hard, but I always walked; weird tipping

Worst hair experience ever

by Jilly366

I went to the James Joseph Studio at Station Landing, Medford, the latest in the JJ family. I had never been and asked for an advanced stylist who would be able to listen to my needs and wants. Unfortunately I got no such thing. I had a very solid idea of what I was looking for and after two cuts (both of which I was required to pay for, even though the second was requested to correct the first), and a color, that cost me a total of $190 (though that included the tips I was foolish enough to leave), I didn't even have anything remotely resembling the cut and color I requested. While it was a decent cut, it wasn't worth the price paid, and wasn't what I wanted. In fact, it made me cry. Further, I sent a detailed complaint to William George, requesting a refund. The complaint was signed for on July 5, and now, 20 days later, I have not heard a word. Even if Mr. George felt the complaint was not valid, good customer service would dictate, at the very least, acknowledgment of the complaint. The letter included my mailing address, email address, and cell phone number. Yet, silence. For the reasons listed, I cannot in good conscience recommend the James Joseph Studio. I could have received the cut I have at Great Cuts for $20.

Edit: I did hear from Mr. George 4 days after posting this review. He had been out of the country, hence the delay in response. I had a nice conversation with Mr. George and we agreed on a partial refund, a correction cut, and a new color should I decide to do that. I'm satisfied with the resolution, and only time will tell if I return to James Joseph after my correction cut, but at least I can say he did take my complaint to heart and did work with me to offer a solution.

Cons: Overpriced, Stylist didn't get it

the only people I would trust with my hair

by mainebeachgurl

first off this review is for Alex, who has cut my hair twice.

I wanted to go drastically short, so I scheduled an appointment with Alex based on online reviews. I gave her lots of pictures with ideas, mostly of models like agyness deyn and anja rubik. She was very positive, talking about what would work with my hair, and she explained exactly what she was going to do before I even had my hair washed. I have super fine, naturally curly hair, so when I was asking for a straight pixie style, that was a pretty high order. Alex gave me the most amazing haircut ever. It was very technical, she used the curl in my hair to make my hair full of body even though I have fine hair. She explained exactly how to style it, and the first time I came in I wanted an edgier style, so she used wax and a flat iron and made it really fun and cool. The best thing about this haircut was that I could take care of it no problem by myself, and I am so clueless about styling anything. I could even let my hair dry naturally curly and it looked great....and took no maintainence! The second time I came in I talked to her about how I wore my hair more naturally, usually letting it air dry or just blowdrying it, so she trimmed my hair and styled it more naturally.

What I loved about Alex it that she really listened to me and involved me in the hair cut; she didn't do what she wanted to do, she did above and beyond what I asked her. She took everything good about my hair and played it up, and gave me a very versatile, flattering, manageable haircut. It is also super stylish...just like I wanted it, and almost identical to the pictures i gave her. Alex is very no-nonsense too, she made everything feel very simple. Alex is well worth the extra money to see a senior stylist, I really dont think you could be disappointed.

Pros: Lots of skill and talent, anything from traditional to trendy styles, flattering cuts

Fav hair cut/color ever

by GabeSun

First time coming to James Joseph, my roomate gets her hair done by Darlene and told me to see her. I have to say it is my favorite hair cut that I've ever had. I have had a lot of bad cuts and it's so nice to get a good one. She was so sweet and took her time with me as we looked at pictures I had brought in. She gave me a cute bob and also changed my color. I had over highlighted my hair for years and was way too blonde and hated it. She brought me back to my natural color (brown). It took me a few days to get use to having brown hair agian, I have been a blonde for 10 years now, but I love it, and I feel smarted too. I can't say enough how much i love my hair.

Great people, good price

by KevinDonovan

I go here because you get more than you pay for. I get a great conversation with the (very) attractive staff, great cut and for very affordable. My stylist is Kashmir, and it's like having a best friend at the salon. She remembers everybody who comes in and is the nicest person you'll ever meet. The best thing about this place was that when my girlfriend, who goes somewhere else, got a botched highlight job, James Joseph redid it for cheap, made her look fantastic, and got themselves a new client. My girlfriend now says she's only going here from now on.

Pros: Good for guys and girls; not intimidating; great value

Cons: Newbury street location so you're gonna have to track down a parking spot

First Haircut in the US - good experience!

by epite

I am not originally from the United States and have always waited to be at home to get my hair cut. This was my first time ever cutting my hair in a salon in the US and it was a great experience. After doing a lot of research and asking around, I chose JJ Studio because of its location, pricing, reputation and reviews. I was assigned to Ashley, who did a very good job with my hair. First thing i liked was that she was punctual and took her time to sit me down and do a consult with me before even sending me to get my hair washed. I am very picky and thus can be a difficult customer but she was extremely nice and understanding and gave me some good advice while also listening to what i wanted. She gave me a great haircut and was very conversational and friendly. another great thing was that i didnt once feel rushed or like she was in a hurry and i was there for over an hour. krystle washed my hair and she was also very nice and conversational! very friendly staff overall, great atmosphere! i am happy with my haircut and plan on going back for my next one to get something a bit more different, now that i know they will do a good job! def recommended, great prices and good customer service!

Pros: great service, friendly staff, punctual and good listeners!

Cons: parking

Great haircut, friendly stylists

by luckynumber13

I went in to get a haircut 6 days before my wedding with Derek. I had never been in before, and he treated me very well. Not only was his advice on what length/style I should have for my hair, he also started talking to me about my wedding updo. I was getting married in NH and had given up on finding a stylist to do my hair the way I wanted it. Derek actually described the exact look I was going for without even asking, and then miraculously offered to come up to NH to do my hair the next weekend. When I went in for the trial, he stayed extra late to make sure it was the way I wanted it. My hair turned out absolutely gorgeous for the wedding.

I haven't had much experience with the other stylists there, but Derek definitely went well above and beyond! When we were running out of time to get to the ceremony, his work didn't suffer, either. He is an exceptional stylist, and the salon itself is a great environment with many other friendly faces to greet you.

Pros: great haircut for a bargain price, service above what's expected

Cons: parking is difficult

Disappointed

by elizabuns

I had read a number of great reviews for Darlene, and she came highly recommended for curly hair (although I straighten mine), so when I scheduled my appointment I was excited to try a new hairstylist. Well, I must say that I was very disappointed--right from the start, Darlene made a few semi-rude comments about my hair (ie, I came in with my hair straight, and after it was shampooed and she saw how thick and wavy my hair is, she said "this should be fun," followed by "just joking." I don't think she was joking). Also because I chemically straighten my hair, she said as she was drying it, "oh, I expected it to be like horse hair, but it isn't." A compliment? Maybe.

I also explained to her that although I know my ends are damaged (I had also just chemically straightened it a few days before which always leaves my ends REALLY dry, which is why I was getting my hair cut) that I am growing out my hair and only wanted a trim. She made her own decision about the length and told me AFTER she cut my hair that she cut an inch and a half off. This is not what I asked for.

I found Darlene to be moderately friendly, but kind of harsh and a bit rude, and I'm happy that I didn't make any stops on my way home because I hadn't looked closely in a mirror before I left the salon--my face was covered in hair, as she hadn't bothered to brush it off.

Maybe she was having a bad day, because so many of her other reviews are great, but I will not go back to her because I am really disappointed in my haircut, and did not like her customer service.

Your Hair Will Thank You...

by WritingGirl

James Joseph Studio on Newbury St. is a real find. I had been going to a well known Cambridge salon for 2 years, and was pretty happy with my stylist. But in October, the cut wasn't quite as good as the ones she had given me in the past. But, since anyone can have a bad day, I went back in January - but that visit was even worse. Instead of natural looking blond highlights (on my medium blond hair) as I had received in the past, I suddenly had stripes. Alternating bands of too-light blond, and coppery brownish red. It was awful! I let it grow out, but knew I needed a change. After a lot of research, I chose James Joseph Studio - similar pricing to my Cambridge salon, and good reviews. It was an excellent choice! I asked for an advanced stylist, middle of the pack experience/price wise, and got an appointment with Grant. Grant was amazing - he listened to my concerns, asked me what I wanted my hair to do, asked me my styling routine, etc. He didn't try and talk me into something I didn't want, and sympathized with my stripe problem. He exuded confidence without any hint of pretense. He obviously knows hair! He gave me a fantastic cut, medium - long layers that fell into place as if they had been precision cut using a computer. Best of all, however, was the color. While he couldn't undo all the stripes in one sitting (and told me that at the beginning so as not to set unrealistic expectations, which I really appreciated), they have definitely been diminished. My hair looks pretty again - lots of pretty and natural looking blond highlights. I can't wait to go to work tomorrow and start hearing the compliments! Everyone at JJ Studio was great, from the front desk staff, to the assistant (shampoo person), to Grant the magical stylist! I highly recommend Grant and JJ Studio.

Pros: Sleek & Stylish, Friendly, Skilled Stylists

Worst Haircut EVER...

by CatGrl

I went to the James Joseph Studion in Medford at Station Landing. I asked for a trim of dead ends but to keep the length even if it did not take all the split ends off. She cut off way too much. It was past the middle of my back, now it is just barely below my shoulders!!! She asked how I styled it on a daily basis. I usually Pony tail it or curl the ends..., Now I can't do either because it is so short. The top of a pony tail sticks straigh up making me look like someone from Whoville! The WORST $50 I have ever spent in my entire life. I cry every morning when I try to do my hair.

not worth it

by JN84

I recently went to james joseph studio on newbury street. I arrived on time and still had to sit for about 15 minutes before my stylist came over and told me that they were going to give me a complimentary conditioning treatment while i waited for her since she was apparently running about 30 minutes behind. i was seated in the shampoo room and a blonde and pink haired girl (who was kind but seemed annoyed and smelled strongly of cigarette smoke) shampooed me and put on this conditioning treatmed, put a plastic cap on my head and stuck me in a chair to wait 10 minutes before rinsing me. I finally meet with the stylist and she informs me that she doesn't think the cut that i explained to her will work for my hairtype and though i was annoyed i think she was probably correct. after much talking she did however manage to give me a fantastic layered cut that i absolutely loved! And it looks good even if i don't style it which is a major plus as a student. After i finished up with her she quickly had me out of her chair and had the next person in before i could blink. I went to the bathroom to change out of the robe they gave me and to get in another look at this fabulous cut before i leave. While waiting for the restroom I could hear stylists arguing in their backroom area and complaining about their clients. I was rather shocked at the language and how unprofessional they were. So in the end, although i left with a great cut i don't think i will be returning to james joseph. these people have a little too much attitude for my liking and i don't care to be one of the clients they discuss where they think they can't be heard.

After a few visits...

by poster12345

Note: I'm updating this review; I initially wrote it in January '08 (I think), and I'm now updating in September '08, after having had a total of three haircuts.

INITIAL REVIEW (Jan. '08):
I spent a considerable amount of time researching stylists/studios that are good with wavy/curly hair, and I'm so happy with my decision to go to James Joseph Studio and get a cut with a senior stylist.

First of all, the stylist seemed like a genuinely nice person, which is just a bonus given her styling expertise. When it came time for the cut, she asked a lot of questions about my hair and how I usually treat it. Though she sort of apologized for asking so many questions (it really wasn't that many), I was glad she was so concerned with giving me a cut suited to ME, and not just assuming my hair was like everyone else's. It was really evident that she knows hair -- knows how it works, knows how to treat it, etc. AND here's the great thing: I can do it myself!

All in all, I got a fantastic haircut from an excellent stylist.
*********************************
UPDATE (Sept. '08):
The prices seem to be steadily rising at James Joseph Studio -- my first cut was $60, a few months later it was $70, and a few months later it was $75. While paradoxically, it seems that the subsequent cuts weren't quite as great as the first one -- the one that was the least expensive! I felt I received a lot of attention on my first visit, which was really great, but on subsequent visits I felt less attention was paid. I don't expect a stylist to remember everything about my particular hair type, but I do feel I was kind of given a more generic, less tailored cut on the second and third visits. I'm not sure yet whether I'll return for a fourth visit; I'm considering seeking out someplace new.

Pros: convenient location on Newbury, great haircut on first visit

Cons: rising prices, quality of initial haircut not matched on subsequent visits

Excellent Cut!

by slee84

A month ago, I decided to finally cut my hair. It was well below my shoulders. I had been keeping the hair that length for a really long time. Finally, I decided to get some layers from my usual stylist, who I had been going to for at least 4 years. I usually trusted her because my cuts were so simple! This time around, I told her that I wanted layers, and I left with a nightmare. It was awful! I didn't even recognize myself! After going home and looking in the mirror, I knew that I could not show up to work on Monday looking like I had taken a razor to my hair, drunk. Checking out salon recommendations around Boston, I found James Joseph on Newbury Street. The recommendations were pretty good. So I called and was scheduled with Derek. When I got to the salon, I was greeted by a mildly friendly front desk. They were kind of cold, but also very busy. I sat for about 5 minutes and then Derek came and introduced himself. I sat down and explained what happened and he was very attentive. He listened to everything I had to say and gave me his feedback. He was genuinely interested. So 45 minutes later, my hair was completely different and "fierce" as he put it. But I was amazed, really. It was sleek and chic.

I was very happy. I recommend Derek highly and have done so to everyone at work!

Pros: great stylist, funky atmosphere

Cons: front desk staff

Julie saved my hair

by linnytrap

I had scraggly, damaged hair from a color treatment done at a "mall salon" (i had asked for a toner, but what we suspect i got was full-on color to my gorgeously highlighted, albeit a bit brassy sections) Though a lot of my hair was long, most of the ends had a good four inches of damage. Some sections had what could only be described as "alfalfa sprouts". Somehow, Julie pulled it all together, evened it out, and gave me this totally versatile cut that goes from conservative to punk in 15 seconds. After a bumble treatment, my hair no longer resembles shredded wheat. Thank you Julie!

Best haircut in the Boston area - this includes Cambridge and Lexington!

by rittenhouse

I highly recommend this studio, with special accolades for stylist Grant Paquin. He was the fourth person I had cut my hair - after 20 years of long hair, chest length, and 3 nightmare cuts in the Boston areas "finest" salons - and he was absolutely fabulous. He talked with me while looking at my hair, before washing or touching it at all, for a long time, and listening to my wishes as well as giving me a great recommendation for how to fix it. It was almost unfixable at this point, as the last stylist had cut it so short, but he gave me professional beautiful lines around the back and sides, so it still looks beautiful as it is growing out. It has been a week now since Grant cut my hair, and it looks beautiful with clean lines. As soon as it is long enough for the cut I really want (a slight modification of the Anna Wintour bob, no bangs and a different angle) I will be back to see Grant. He is a perfectionist and I highly recommend him.

The reason I chose James Joseph after my 3 disastrous cuts is because I went online to find the "Best of Boston" and saw his salon and studio - but more importantly - much more importantly - I saw that he had responded to comments on the websites. Especially his responses to customers who had not been completely satisfied - this sold me on going to this salon. I felt so bad about the other studios I went to, and did not feel that the owners would care or attempt to fix the uneven cuts I was given. After reading both glowing reviews and the considerate comments by the owner of James Joseph, I felt I could go to this salon with confidence.

I'm so glad that I did. Please visit his studio - and ignore receptionists that are perhaps less kind and attentive than the stylists - for great service with professional and perfectionist attitudes. I cannot recommend Grant highly enough, in particular. Thanks a million!

Cons: Parking is hell, but this is typical for Newbury Street, not really a drawback

Lindsey really knows hair

by pamigz

My hair was an absolute mess when I met Lindsey. I was afraid to let anyone touch my hair due to past experiences with other hair stylists. She listened to me and made me feel so at ease and told me don't worry you're going to love your hair when I'm finished. She was right! I loved my hair! I now live in New York, and have tried a few places, however, no one can seem to get my color or my highlights right, so I now travel to Boston to see Lindsey. Believe me, it's worth the trip!

Pros: fun atmosphere, confident and friendly staff

Cons: parking can be difficult

best haircut experience ever---even for the picky ones!

by yano87

I'm one of those girls who is extremely fussy about my hair, and when it comes to cutting it, I hardly do..and i'm talking several months. I previously went to Guiliana at Dellaria on Kenmore, but for some reason she switched careers and is now doing nursing..Anyway, I thought I would die when she told me that my haircut was the last one she was doing :(..I waited probably 4 months, read several reviews and talked to a lot of people, and finally came to cut my long, messy locks in September, at James Joseph Studio. I picked Alex based on reccomendation, and that she was a senior stylist. I was so nervous going, but was so pleased that she sat me down and had a consultation with me-even before shampooing. This lady knows her stuff! I told her about my problem, and how picky I am..but she proved to be sheer genious! I chopped off 10inches of hair and am amazed. I just came back tonight(with a friend too!) from having my haircut again, and once again-amazing job! She's knowledgeable and I can't say how amazing she is!

have no fear-go to alex!
also, bring a friend and both of you get a cut for $48 bucks, not the regular $60!

btw..the receptionists are awfully rude-both times i've called..good thing they aren't the ones cutting my hair!

Pros: open 7 days a week, consultation before you even wash your hair, perfection!

Cons: newbury st parking bites, receptionists are rude

From a girl that loves getting her haircut, I LOVE LOVE LOVED this one

by jerseytransplant

I recently moved to Boston and was trying to find the right place to get my haircut (a favorite past time of mine it should be noted). After reading reviews on City Search and Stuff @ Night I decided on James Joseph Studio. I have nothing but FANTASTIC things to say about my experience. I called initially for an appointment after researching the website for pictures of the stylists (you're supposed to pick a makeup artist at the department store based on who's makeup you liked, so I figured the same was true with hair cutting). When I called the Studio, I had a stylist in mind but I asked who was free and they told me Derek. I was apprehensive at first, because his profile had not been updated but boy am I happy I stuck with him.

Derek understood exactly what I meant when I said, 'I feel like I have a young face with old hair.' He let me express my vision and then gently guided me into what he thought might be best without being pushy at all. What I was left with was the BEST haircut and color (two different shades of highlights) I have ever had and I have been to a lot of high end salons in the New York area.

Derek was young and fun yet professional. He created a haircut that actually suited MY face, not just what suited a celebrity trend. Though I cut a significant amount of hair, never did I doubt Derek. At other salons in the past, I always have to have an extremely experienced stylist, as my hair is somewhat difficult to cut (very thick and somewhat coarse yet fine). Derek, who is on the lower end of the cost scale (and so I can assume, less experienced) was just as experienced if not more talented than any of the 'advanced stylists' I have had in the past.

Overall, my experience was fantastic at JJS. An insider tip is to head there on Thursday nights (they are open until 9)...they serve wine to their clients--such a nice touch at the end of a work week.

A New Me!

by mimik

I go to James Joseph as often as I can. I was ready for something new- I wasn't sure what- just something new and something red. That's what I told the stylist when I sat down. She made eye contact with me through the mirror and said with confidence, "I'm sure we can do that." She went to the back to grab a hair color pallet and helped me decide between different red tones see which ones would look good together. Michelle, my stylist was great at walking me through decisions by giving me all the right information and offering her advice only when I asked. And when I did ask ,she explained why the three colors we chose would look awesome together. And was she ever right!

The cut is sensational too! It's a graduated bob with a funky angle, and I LOVE IT! I saw my boyfriend who's a painter after the appointment, and he said, "Wow, she really is an artist. She understands your face shape and neck line and cuts to those angles." I've always thought of her as an artist.

I was talking to Michelle when she was finishing my hair, and she asked how I felt. I said, "I feel pretty and more myself-- like I need a new job to go with this hairstyle." She said that's what she loves most about her job: helping women/men feel beautiful and totally who they are. I'm always surprised to read negative reviews, especially about Michelle, because she always works so hard to help me get exactly what I want even if I don't know exactly how to say it because I don't know all the vocabulary.

I love getting my hair cut at James Joseph. I'm generally very frugal, but love spending money on this one thing because it seems to make quite a difference in how I like to present myself. It's well worth it!

Pros: products are top of the line, stylist well-trained

Cons: wait a week for an appointment

Disappointed

by tsboston

First off, I want to say that I think the stylists at J.J. Studio are probably capable and well-trained. My haircut is fine, but not fantastic. I was more disappointed in the attitude of service than in the results. I was really excited about getting my hair cut and checking out the studio. I went to one of their top stylists who came highly recommended (who is actually moving to the Salon where she will charge infinitely more, I?m sure). What I thought was going to be a positive, relaxing experience was simply very negative. Instead of giving helpful instruction, my stylist spent 45 minutes lecturing me on the sins of drugstore shampoo and the horror of my hair texture, while trying to up-sell me on products at every turn. I get that part of their job is to show you what they use, but this session was simply ridiculous. For the record, I am not inept with my hair. I just moved to the area, and formerly went to a more upscale salon in another major metropolitan city. I loved my stylist there, and was sad to leave her. So when Michelle started insulting my old stylist?s work, I was actually personally turned off. I like my hair. I own half the Bumble and Bumble products she was suggesting to me, which she again showed me at the register. When she asked a third time ?if I just wanted to add one of their shampoos? to my bill, I was genuinely annoyed. I want to leave a salon feeling good about my hair and the way I look?not as if I?m been attacked by my stylist. Since my stylist is apparently so product-savvy, I would have thought my hair styling would have held up?but just a few hours later, my hair looked frizzy and unkempt. Usually after getting a haircut, the stylist?s handiwork looks incredible for a day or two. Not in this case. I?m looking for a salon home, and I guess I still haven?t found one.

A little disappointed

by natura

I had heard a lot of good things about JJ Studio so I stopped by yesterday when I decided to cut my bob into a short pixie. The front desk was busy but friendly. After I explained I was trying to find someone I trusted, a receptionist arranged a consult w/ a woman who I later found out was the manager. (It would've been helpful if this was disclosed, b/c her service fees were the highest.) I was impressed when she listened and spoke intelligently. We looked at photos of cuts I was interested in, and I asked if she thought my hair texture would be a good match. She assured me that yes, it would work. She had an open slot later that day so a while later, I returned. After getting situated at Michelle's station, we reviewed the cuts we had discussed and I reiterated my preference for the pixie style. As the cut progressed, the stylist w/o explanation headed in a much different direction, cutting a heavy moppy top giving me specifically what I had asked to avoid - the "mushroom" look. I politely expressed my concern with the floppy top & she agreed to thin it out, but said she didn't want to cut too much more since it would look disconnected -- since "you" (meaning me) had changed direction in the cut. This I found rather astounding, but felt to nervous to argue with. She implied that she was confused by what I was asking for, so I again explained & even showed her the photo. Her response was to say that the photo was in b/w, and wasn't very good quality, and even contradicted her earlier statement re: my hair texture. Besides being a little too late, this observation was irrelevant, since a floppy-topped mushroom cut is nothing like a pixie. In the end, the cut wasn't at all what I had asked for. It's not terrible, but mushroomy elements remain that will likely get worse. She knocked $10 off the fee w/o me even asking, but it is still a lot of $ for a cut I didn't want. Friendly, nice place, and will likely work for some people, but I won't go back.

Nancy is the best stylist in Boston!

by good2b

My first time at James Joseph Studio and I was so impressed. I saw Nancy for my cut and color and it was the best experience I have had on Newbury Street ever! I needed a change and Nancy suggested a new color and new cut. It wasn't overly drastic, it was just perfect. I work in an office so I needed something a bit conservative and she was very understanding of that. With the cut, I can add a little more product to it to make my hair more fun for the weekend. When I went to work the next day, my co workers couldn't stop telling me how good my hair looked. I feel like a princess and I owe that to Nancy. All this glamour and I spent a lot less than I usually do on Newbury. I asked her about her education and when she told me about all the training and education that she has recieved and continues, I couldn't believe she had time to do my hair. She used to work at a big name salon in New York as well. I got exactly what I would in New York, but for a quarter of the price. I wish I had the time to tell you more good things about my experience but I will finish by saying, make an appointment!

Pros: personality, end results of my color and cut, friendly staff

Cons: none

Cristina at James Joseph Studio rocks again!

by jengeo

I can't believe that I'm a California girl and go to my parents in Boston to get my hair done. Cristina is the only person I trust to touch my hair in the states. On a recent trip last month, I took some some of my CA girls back home for an event in Bean Town and we all went to Cristina. Every single one of them are thrilled. She changed their color... ALL OF THEM. Unbelievably, you can see their eye color. She knew just what to do with the faces in front of her. Finally we saw the brown eyes in Lisa! (LOVE YOU LIS) She is probably the best colorist in the states (my other stylist is in London). Not one of them left the salon without a smile. The cuts were incredible for all the girls and finally someone knew how to teach us how to style it right..... From flaming curls to stick straight!
Thank you so much Cristina! THe CA girls all shout to you!

Pros: Peppy, Great people, real, and HONEST!

Promising, but ultimately disappointing...

by bostongirl82

I hate to give this place only 2 stars since my experience started out very positively and everyone was really nice, but in the end it's the haircut that matters to me, and that was a huge disappointment.
This was my first appointment at the Studio, and I'd read on their website that Cristina is an expert in cutting curly hair. Mine's wavy, but I've had a hard time finding someone who knows how to cut hair with texture so it looks good without being straightened all the time. Cristina is really friendly and immediately made me feel comfortable. I'd brought some pictures with me, and we looked at them together and talked about length, texture, etc. It seemed like we were on the same page.
About 20 minutes later, when she started cutting the sides, I realized just how much of my hair was gone. Instead of a medium-length multi layered cut, I basically ended up with a chin length bob - not at all suited to my round face or wavy, frizz-prone hair, and certainly not like the picture I'd brought. In all fairness, I do want to point out that the haircut itself is not bad - it's just very, very different from what I'd hoped for and what I thought I was getting.
As I said, Cristina is really nice, and I probably should have said something at the time. However, I was honestly a bit stunned by how short it was - I didn't know what to say. I've never had that type of miscommunication with a stylist before. Not to mention that any potential fixes would likely involve cutting more hair, which was kind of the problem in the first place.
Since this was my first appointment, I can't say a whole lot about the Studio in general, other than that everyone I interacted with was very pleasant. I'm happy to see that other reviewers had a more positive experience, and I'm sure if the stylist and I had communicated better I'd be giving it a higher rating. But at this point, I'm just going to invest in some cute clips and hope it grows quickly...and keep looking for a new stylist!

Great value, fabulous haircuts!

by wendyroberts617

I've been seeing Michael at James Joseph for almost a year now after spending almost twice as much at other salons. He is very efficient with time, is conversational without being intrusive or obnoxious, and understands my curly hair needs. I'm in and out of there in an hour including check-in, shampoo, toner, cut, and payment. The salon staff is very friendly and the salon itself is very comfortable, not too crowded or cluttered or fussy.

Pros: close to office, quick service

worth it!

by lillypad56

I'd been hearing about James Joseph Studio for a while, and finally headed down there without disappointment! I saw Alex, and she really took the time to figure out what I wanted. I can never get the words out right(which is why I've never liked what I've gotten in the past!) and Alex had a great way of deciphering what has and hasn't worked in the past. I left with the prettiest color I've ever had, and even though I didn't want to be adventurous with the cut, what I left with was kinda the same but WAY better.
I can actually do it myself! My roommate already made an appt with her because she liked my hair so much. I will definitly be going back! Alex, thanks- I can actually trust a hairdresser again!

Pros: NOT intimidating! Friendly staff

Wonderful Experience

I went to Michael at James Joseph Studio and it was the best decision, concerning my hair, that I have ever made. I cut off 13 inches to donate to 'Locks of Love' and the cut was amazing. Michael even made arrangements to send the hair to the company. I could never imagine bad service or a bad stylist at James Joseph studio.

michelle is the best stylist i ever had!

by bleuemoon

i have been getting my hair done by michelle at james joseph studio for about a year now and she gives great hair cuts! i am trying to grow out my hair and she shapes it so that as my hair is growing out it still has a nice shape. i've gotten my hair highlighted for the first time by michelle last time i went in. she didn't push a radical color on me but let me choose a subtle color. even as i am growing out my hair, the highlights look natural. i've been recommending michelle to my friends so that all my friends could have great hair too! the staff at james joseph studio are friendly and competent. i recommend james joseph studio highly and if you can get michelle to do your hair, you'll love it.

I've been going to Michelle at James Joseph for 8 months now, and my hair has never looked so good! I was at a wedding in D.C. last weekend, and the stylist there looked at my highlights and said they were the best she'd seen. I have this fabulous asymmetrical cut, and I feel more "me" than ever before. I'll think we'll go red next. Very reasonable prices, and what fun!

Pros: stylist!

Lindsey's the best Boston hairstylist!

by pegsta20

My hair was in need of help. It's long and blond and I could never find anyone to style it right. Now, I love how my hair falls into place. I also liked how Lindsey colored my hair. I have had my hair highlighted in the past and they haven't gotten it light enough. This is the best color I have ever had!! I have a hard time doing my own hair, but her hints really gave me more confidence. She was easy to talk to and very helpful. I will definitely book with her again!! Thank you, thank you!

I haven't had a decent hair cut in a long time and I pretty much gave up on my hair. I decided to go James Joseph to give it a try and what a great surprise it was. Since it was my first time I decided to go with whoever is available. Kerri was my stylist. I was so lucky to have her because she did a wonderful job. I actually like my hair now. I'm a guy and my hair is very difficult to work with. Kerri did an excellent job and she was very pleasant and fun to talk to. I am definitely going back.

The Best Hairdresser in Town!

I have been in Boston for over 11 years and after bouncing from salon to salon I have found my stylist at James Joseph Studio. Laurie Hamilton not only listens to what you would like but also offers helpful suggestions without being pushy. She is also great about keeping up with new trends by attending classes and seminars across the country. I would highly recommend her and the salon to anyone who is looking.

Left with lovely locks! This place is great!

by oceanna

Ladies and Gents, this place is great. My search for "my" hair salon in boston has ended. Let me tell you why.
The best place to start is with first impressions. As the old beauty addage goes "Never trust a stylist with bad hair". When I first walked in to JJS the first thing I noticed was how GREAT everyones hair was. I immediately felt there was hope for me and my fine wavy hair.
As I waited for my stylist I watched others get their hair cut. The stylists ALL seemed to be very focused on their client, discussing products and prefferences and generally comforatable chit chat. Another good sign: Stylists who know what they are doing.
Still, only my experience would confirm the impression that I had that this Salon was going to be pretty darn good.
I heard about Alex through a few very good recomendations from friends of friends and she did NOT dissappoint me. She sat me down and listened to me babble about my hair type, what I liked what I didnt like, and what sort of cut I was hopping for. Then she offered me her advice. The way she talked showed me that she knew about different hair types and obviouslly had alot of experience. Like a true artist knows their paints and brushes inside and out, Alex knows hair types and the products that enhance them.
Throughout the hair cut she offered me alot of insite on my hair type and how to care for my hair...and I also felt very comfortable asking her questions about what products she was using and what choices she was making while she cut.
A day later, my cut is lovely and my experience at James Joseph Studio was too! I loved Alex and will deffinately book another appointment with her. However, I have a hunch that any hairstylist you book with with produce fabulous results. I've heard very positive things about several differnt stylists at James Joseph Studio from several of my friends.
Alex! Thanks for the wonderful cut!

Pros: Knowlegable Staff, Comfortable Atmosphere, Wine on Thursday nights!

Cons: The higher level stylists are more expensive than the bosted $50 cut, but I guess thats the price you pay for beauty...and it's so worth it!

Much better than others I've been to on Newbury st.

by cormattufts

Went to this salon for the first time last night and had a GREAT experience. Got the exact cut I wanted. Stylist talked with me through the whole thing to make sure he was doing what I had in mind. Friendly, prompt service. NOT even overpriced, shockingly. My favorite part though is that unlike most other Newbury salons, they weren't pretentious and didn't make it seem like they were doing me a huge favor by cutting my hair. I used to go to another salon up newbury a block that made it seem like they were way too cool for their own good. James Joseph is cool without trying too hard or getting full of itself. I would absolutely recommend it and will definately go back.

Pros: Service, Friendly Staff, Not Full of Itself

Cons: None.

Third time not such a charm...disappointed

by scorpio68

This was my third time at this salon with the same "advanced" stylist. To be fair, the first cut was great. The 2nd cut, not so great, but I'm always willing to give it a third try. This time, to guarantee I would get a cut just like the first cut, I brought pictures from that day I first got my hair cut at James Joseph Studio. Somehow, this same stylist was not able to recreate that cut...but instead put so many layers in my hair that I now feel a bit like a shaggy dog. I was very disappointed - this was the first time I ever brought photos to ensure I got the cut I wanted, and it didn't work. On top of that, I had my hair highlighted that same day. I expected it to be a certain price, and no one bothered to tell me that it would be $30 more because they decided to put my toner in my hair. I'd rather not be surprised like that when I'm spending so much money. Not sure I'd return after this visit.

Best color, Best cut of MY LIFE

by traceykv

James Joseph's stylist CRISTINA SILVA is, by far, the best on Newbury St. I have been a client of hers for about a year and she has been consistently professional and always ON TIME!!! She is an expert in her field and I would trust no one else with my hair. Her skills as a colorist are awesome...she has an eye for what will look best on you...and her cuts are beautiful! All this and one more thing. She is one of the sweetest and coolest girls I know. You'll want to call her to chat even when you don't need your hair done! She is the best there is!

The salon in general is SUPERB!!! All of the employees from the receptionists to the assistants are so friendly and fun you will always feel like you are being taken care of there! One more thing---for Newbury St, it is a GREAT DEAL!!! It's a win/win!!!!

Pros: Friendly, fun atmosphere--great staff, reasoably priced, especially for the location

Not sold

by tarabli

I went to the salon after being very diappointed at another Newbury salon. I made an appointment with one of the regular stylists. When I arrived, the stylist sat me in her chair and I explained what I wanted. It was the first time I have ever brought a picture of what I wanted. Long story short, the highlights came out good. Was not exactly what i wanted but I am not complaining. However, the haircut was not how I had wanted it. She gave me layers but the layers do not blend well. At the end of the haircut, I had to tell her that the bottom layer was too long and did not blend with the remainer of the hair. She was very nice and willing to fix it. However, it still does not blend and I could tell she was getting very annoyed. I do not understand how hard it is to cut layers which blend. Ive had it done before and all you need is to use a raor comb to help it bland and not look choppy. I'm just getting annoyed at stylists not completely listening to what you want or what will look good. My feelings on the salon: Nice atmosphere and very friendly. May try it again.

Pros: friendly

Cons: dont listen

Alex is the greatest

by berries18

I initially went to the James Joseph Salon, which I really liked, but when a scheduling conflict arose with my stylist I switched to the Studio. My appointment was with Alex, and I was so pleased I've been going there ever since. She does an amazing job with the color - I literally get stopped by strangers to ask if it's my natural color, and, if not, where I get my hair done. Also, I have really long, thick hair, and she is able to thin it out in a way that doesn't leave it looking choppy or stringy, but makes it much easier to manage. Since she's been styling my hair I have been able to cut at least 15 minutes off my drying time. She also is really easy to get along with and talk to - I've recommended a couple of friends go see her, and they all love her too!

Pros: Great atmosphere, staff and results

Cons: A little pricey, but definitely worth it

BEWARE-Please listen to negative reviews, I didn't and wish I had

by vigil28

Tried this salon based on positive reviews and now regret it. Very unexperienced stylists. Worst haircut ever, I asked that it be kept long and absolutley no layers. I left with layers and one side is visibly shorter than the other, very choppy. It looks like I went to Super Cuts. I can go on but I think I've made my point.
