Not sure why anyone would give this alleged "Italian Restaurant" more than about 2 stars. As a true Italian, trust me, you are better off going to Paparazzi in Wellsley where food is fairly good, cooked out in the open, and brick ovens

We went there recently before reading all the mixed reviews. Ordered the antipasto ($13) , the "tartufo signature grilled veal chop" ($35), the "Veal Piccata" ($23), and cannoli ($6), along with wine. First, the wine..: we got presentted with a bottle of Italian wine at hugely inflated price and it was no better that the "jug wine" sold by Cribari. Based on our serving, I could not reccomend the $13 antipasto to anyone, as it was ripoff #2: a few pieces of coldcuts and a couple pieces of cheese..all worth maybe $3.00 and sold at huge markup. That so-called "signature dish" of veal says a lot. If taht is their "signature" dish...then the place is truly 4th rate. It came to ma bit dry, undercooked, and tasted like pre-frozen meat to me. My wife's Veal Piccata was a slop of tasteless "something". Top it off with $6 mushy (prefilled?) cannoli...and it definetly convinced us to not return to that 3rd rate cafeteria passing itself off as an elite Italian restaurant. funny thing is, we are Italian and cook Italian (wife born in Italy) and from scale of 1-10, their food that night rated a 3 from us. Go if you like, but we scratched it off.

We dined there recently and found it OK but unremarkable. Having read reviews, we stayed away from overpriced antipastos that are embarrassingly served with minimal contents on the plate (we noticed a few). We stuck to main course and got the veal. Nothing to write home about, tasted like Restaurant Depot meat and not fresh natural meat (though I have no way of knowing). It was bland and not particularly "Italian" or "unique". I've had better at lesser places and to top it off, it was not hot...just barely tepid.. The wine was not something I would advertise to people as it's a pathetic act to charge so much for what tastes like "jug wine" at best. The service was slow and the place was not full. We saw the noted chef a few times trying to chat or impress the customers but I have heard he is far from a chef, more like a short-order cook, but again can't vouch as he likely did not cook our food. Would I go back? Nope....food is just "OK" but certainly NOT worth the price they want. But, maybe it was a bad night so you should check it out yourself. Remember - skip the antipasto ! Get the CHEAPEST wine on the menu as more expensive stuff is also "cheap".

Pros: Decent location

Cons: List is too long

This restaurant is outright offensive!!
If you order wine- especially the super Tuscan selection- The servers are instructed to pour house wine. Grey goose martini? I hope you can tell the difference- because he doesn't pour the proper product.(but will charge the proper price)Althought there are certain items on the menu for a guest to "order", they do not exist in the restaurant and are misrepresented by the establishment. They have been known to charge for bread. They also have been known to add items to a check or and order without notice to the guest.

The owner Dante has been regularly seen actually having arguements with guests and servers. He misrepresents his food by calling it organic and local. The tuna is indonesian and pumped with carbon minoxide for color before frozen. The rest of the items on the menu follow suit with this theme. Steaks and so forth are all low quality cuts and frozen. This guy even calls himself the "chef" yet is incapable of cooking a grilled cheese. Read past reviews on Chowhound, Yelp, Boston dot com- I am not the only one who has experienced this.

The deserts are all 50 cent items bought at restaurant depot. Nothing is made on premise. My suggestion for prospective guests is to open a can of Chef Boyardee, open a box of Franzia, and wave down the ice cream truck- the quality of all those items will be better and you can save all of the money that this place plans on extorting from you.

Pros: None

Cons: Everything

.

Some food is OK, other is not up to standard. Price is most definitely overboard for what you get. Sitting close to bar is worst thing possible...noisy and obnoxious employees. Chief chef should also stop yelling in public at employees on occasion. Antipastos are heavily overpriced and miniscule in quantity. Stay away from pasta with so-called tortufo........TINY portion at huge cost, probably the very worst value in the joint. Stick with grilled en-trees. Wine is also overpriced and cheap in type. Some selections are OK. You need to judge for yourself but from our 3 visits, the place gets at best mixed reviews.

Pros: quaint and cozy

Cons: food not consistent, service below average, noisy

.

Mediocre food passed on as original Italian. It's OK, but definitely not worth the prices they list. As others have also said, the wines are a ripoff in price....3rd rate wines at premium prices. You can do just as well and better in price at Papa-Razzi for sure.

The place is OK. But, nothing to write home about in terms of food quality and value. We have been there a number of times due to our home location and we have found that quality of food is very inconsistent from week to week. Food tthat tastes reheated, food that is not warm, long food waiting times, overcooked food, undercooked food. It's also true about "cheap wine", but what normal restaurant doesn't serve cheap wine at inflated prices? They serve $6-$8/bottle wine at $30+/bottle and make it look like it's a great Italian wine - it isn't. But, that's part of the business. The chef, dante, as prior reviews have alluded to - is truly a clown with big grin and sporadic yelling at staff. I think a more befitting title for him is "head cook". A chef he is definetly not. But, hey, what restaurant is perfect? Don't go by all the reviews here. Use them only as a guide and check it out yourself.

Pros: location is preety good but so-so parking

Cons: as many others, inconsistent quality and low value

It's ok, small, and overpriced. I got ripped off on the pasta with tartufo...about a spoonfull of pasta with a few cheap (probably Chines sourced) mushrooms they like to call "tartufos". Tartufo my a-s! They were fancy mushrooms! Over $20 for spoonfull on huge plate? Please..give me a break! Stay away from pasta dishes and antipastos..stick to main course ONLY and you may be OK. It's sometimes a crapshoot..so about average for main course. By the way, the wine is 4th rate cheap..but they boost up price by 500% to make it appear special...so careful on the wine. The chef seems to be a "fool" with his stupid grin all the time while occasionally yelling at staff. It's a bit noisy and small. Place is clean and it tries to give one a cozy atmosphere.....but overall it's just "average" food and most is NOT truly "authentic" Italian...just a wanna-be copy. I'm not saying it's bad as I still go occasionally and get a main course, just saying "watch what you order"...and don't expect consistency in quality night to night..

I tried it with wife and friends this past weekend. I loved the place. The food was excellent, service no problem, and a wonderful atmosphere. The chef greeted us at our table and prepared some wonderful food. We will go back. Truly a delight in our opinion.

I have been going to this place over the past year. The food is not too bad and in fact it's sometimes very good. It seems to be inconsistent, maybe depending on who cooks it at any given time. Service is good. The wines are not their strong point as they are indeed low quality but priced a bit high. All in all, not a bad place to try. Just stick to main couses as the antipastos appear to be a moneymaker for them and very little for you.

I loved the food and the relaxed atmosphere. Great place to spend a quiet evening dining..
Not sure waht all the fuss is about prices. Good food is costly everywhere and this place is no costlier than any good restaurant.,

I have no affiliation with this resaturant and I have never been there before but i was curious who has the time to write all these bad reviews. They are clearly written by the same person. Even worse is the fact that this website doesnt filter their reviews, so much for trusted content huh.

what a joke.

Last few people got it right! Dante paisan is by no means a "chef", even if he gives himself that title. He can't cook much of anything with a few exceptions. He is not only rude to staff but sometimes to customers - we experienced that. He goes around with his big paisan smile instead of attending to his kitchen. And his co-owner Maria, what the f - ck does she do? Bar area is nosy and they can't make a good mixed drink. Food, as many before me have attested to, is way overpriced considering quantity and quality. Let's not forget the cheap wine that he marks up by about 500% ! The guy is faking his way because of clientele that can't really cook well and/or do'nt know real Italian food through no fault of their own. We have been there at spotted intervals beginning about 2 years ago..and NOTHING has changed even as we believed it would improve. Bear in mind, we have not gone often and most of the few trips were at someone else's invitation (birthday, anniversary, etc) and those same people now agree with us. Dante - get some cooking and managing skills and then maybe you might get deserving reviews! In the meantime - skip this place and go to a real Italian restaurant with good food and good atmosphere and realistic prices. CIN CIN Dante! Buon appetito to that garbage you sometimes serve at hugely inflated prices!

Pros: entertained by that fool Dante

Cons: food, service, prices, noise, cheap overpriced wines, lousy mixed drinks, "chef"'s arrogance and manners, lousy chef

.

Terrible food, service is weak and the BIG-SHOT owner Mr. Dante is a bad Italian joke. This wannabe pisan can't cook so he tries to schmooze around the joint trying to justify his overpriced menu. The bar is poorly staffed and is always out of top shelf liquor and mixers. Hey goofball, take a couple hundred out of the register and run to the liquor store for some booze. The wine list is lame and totally overpriced. This guy needs to lose the whole goomba routine and go take a few cooking lessons. I know he wasn't paying attention to his mama when he was growing up. He's also extremely rude to customers and waitstaff alike. This joint needs an entire overhaul, get rid of Dante, hire a real chef, straighten out the bar (you might want to start by stocking the bar and hiring someone who knows how to make a drink), and train the waitstaff properly (you can start by keeping them away from that cancer Dante). An Italian accent can only go so far, especially in a city with so many excellent Italian joints. Avoid this dump!

Cons: Owner/ chef is an imposter for an Italian who claims to know food.

Not only is that stuff about the Dante chef-owner true, but his prices are out of sight considering what you get. The food is average in most cases but sometimes poor as his cook(s) don't cook it right....like cold veal chop..or mushy pasta dish. We have gone numerous times at invitation by friends but only once on our own - and that once was enough! Advice: Drive right by , wave to customers, and go some place with value and good food. I rate the place a 3 out of 10.

We agree with previous reviewer completely. Have eaten there twice and have also seen this Dante clown treating his people like trash. The guy comes around with a s - -t eating grin like a fool and thinks himself as our gift to cooking. Our experience and that of 2 other couples has been "mixed results" on the food - it's much too pricey for quality and quantity that you get. No better than average at most. As a prior person said - you get screwed on the cheap wine being marked up far more than other places for what you get. The guy is shafting unknowing customers, especially jewish ones it seems...that love Italain food and think what they are getting is "authentic". Our advice - try it if you like but don't even say hello to the idiot Dante, and then you will certainly decide that "I got shafted..I won't go back..!". If you are smart - drive right by it on the way to a GOOD restaurant with a GOOD manager/chef and one that does not shaft you as much.

Pros: average staff service, good location

Cons: DANTE and his idiocy and prices for food he serves, and questionable quality

Talk about overpriced!!!!! The food was fair and not hot when I got it. Service was average or below. Wine was cheap stuff and priced through the sky. Place is noisy.

Ate there last Saturday, wouldn't ever go back. The manager "Dante" is a real idiot, arrogant and demeaning to his wait staff. We were embarassed for his employees. A classless bully who tries to impress the customers by treating the staff like garbage. We need less of this guy in the world. Food was average, the staff was great, especially for having to deal with this idiot. Dante needs a lesson on how to be polite to others, and how to treat people as you would like to be treated. Who does this guy think he is?

Cons: Manager Dante

.

Took my wife and her parents here for their anniversary, We are all Italian and her parents are as Italian as one can get. First comment: "Is this all the pasta they give in a dish?" . They were amazed that the place can charge so much for a tiny bit of pasta - about the cheapest ingredient one can buy to make a meal. These guys at Tartufo should stick their heads in the sand from embarassment on pasta portions. DEFINETLY not the "Italain way"!!! We went for the veal and it was half dissapointing due to strange and unwanted "sauce" and the fact that two of the dishes were not hot....like they had beeen sitting waiting for other dishes. The guy also serves immensely overpriced wine for the quality you get...it's basically $8/bottle wine sold at five times the purchase price! About the only good thing was the bread. Service was also inferior and "amateurish". Our prime b_tch is the amuont and quality of food vs. the price. Unless money and authentic taste/custom means nothing to you, then go ahead and try the place ---otherwise drive right by and don't stop. The guy is trying to make big bucks off customer's backs.

Pros: The chef speaks Italian

Cons: food authenticity, quantity, price, cheap overpriced wine

I know food, Italian food. We ate at Tartufo Friday night. My objective judgement is that the food was inconsistent quality, way way overpriced in many cases, a noisy place to eat, and fair service. Stay away from pasta dishes and certain antipastos - very high price for what you get. My veal was fai but dinners for other 3 people were not as good as expected. Maybe it was a bad night for cooks and Dante- but a good quality restaurant can't charge those prices in a noisy environment and have bad food. Try it if you wish, but the place won't see us again! Oh, by the way ..I'm red blooded Italian and we cook all from scratch at home and BY FAR my wife can cook 100 fold better than whoever was in that kitchen. Problem is most US born people can't cook well and never had truly great food ..so their point of rerence or baseline for judging is skewed. That includes so-called "Culinary Institute" graduates who are made into "instant chefs" (vs. people who have cooked all their life and have no need for a "paper certificate" to give them a "chef title". If one has not cooked for years and years..no culinary school" will truly make them great cooks.

A Great Place to Enjoy!! I must say as a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America Tartufo is a magnificent restaurant in quaint Newton Center. The atmosphere can be a bit noisy due to the beautiful granite bar and hardwood flooring. Anna Maria and Dante are always fun and very caring from their warm greetings to their goodbye kisses. A very loyal customer base is always there. People in Newton are very fussy and know that their neighborhood Italian spot gives them excellent food and good service. The bartender and staff are very helpful and are able to make suggestions such as the double thick cut veal chops, lobster parpadelli, and best homemade pasta and delicious sauces that accompany them. The chocolate tower and italian speciality coffees and fine selection of after dinner drinks are a great way to end a great evening. My highest compliments and praises to all. The restaurant business is difficult so keep persevering!! I am happy you are in my wonderful town!

I'm true blooded Italian. Tartufo is a fairly good place to eat if you don't mind the BIG $$$ for what you get. Have gone twice and each time we came to same conclusion: Food is good BUT not authentic Italian in most cases. But, hey, most people won't know so they go and pay the price. Good place, good quality food in MOST cases, but poor value. Service is also "sopotty". If you want to laugh, check out the polaces website ("about" part) at: tartuforestaurant.c0m/about.htm
Nice English!

This is very much a neighborhood joint, where the folks there at the bar know each other and the staff pretty well. Being the odd one out at the bar, I got the attention of the staff, including a woman who seemed to be a manager/owner.

It took some time before they came around to take my order. I caught the manager that I wanted to order and she appeared to hear, but gave no response, which seemed odd to me. Anyway my order was taken by the bartender by and by, no harm/no foul.

The food arrived and it was quite nice, so I enjoyed it -- I got a bruschetta appetizer, followed by a carbonera, which was flavorful with good texture. The wine was fine, too. But at some point the manager came along, and made a big production about how important all the customers at the bar were -- one owned a prominent restaurant, another couple was a local TV personality and his wife, etc., etc.. I suppose that sort of thing is important to someone, but the heavy-handed name-dropping seemed crass to me.

So while she annoyed me, the rest of the experience was very nice.

Sad to see the anti-Semitic remark in the previous review -- glad to hear that person won't be coming back, good riddance!

We went there last week. My wife and I are true Italians from Southern Italy, though admittedly growing up in Boston area. We not only speak Italian but eat Italian ..all "from scratch". We travel to Italy to visit friends and relatives every year so we arguably know good, real, authentic Italian food. In case anyone wants one brief golden rule on Southern Italian food: MAKE IT SIMPLE! Southern Italian food is all basic, simple, uncomplicated, but full of flavor and fresh ingredients (many of which are unique to Italian soil conditions). Tartufo, in our opinion, "tries" to "simulate" somewhat of an "Americanized" version of Italian food ...catering partially to what Americans "think" Italian food should be based upon all the "wanna be" TV chefs .....Tartufo is a place for people who want Italian food that is somewhat better than many advertized Italian restaurants, but it's not great Italian food by any stretch of imagination. In souther Italy, in case someone is misled by other reviews, restaurants dish out very sizeable portions of very healthly Italian food at affordable prices. Why? Because Italian love their food and know good food and good value as they all cook at home. Tartufo gives you neither good sized portions nor good value. Wine is substandard and immensely overpriced. Pasta is way to expensive for what is served. The food, we have found, is inconsistent in quality (prep and cooking) from day to day or week to week. We rate the place as "fair" at best. Anyone giving the place high marks does not truly know good food and does minimal home cooking of a serious nature. In a nutshel, fair food, overpriced food and wine, fair atmosphere, ...but DEFINETLY not "authentic" . It's "Americanized" for sake of economics. But, go try it out and be your own judge. Hey, so maybe you don't know TRUE Italian food..but if you like it and don't mind the bill...go ahead. We still go occasionally but are very choosy on what we order. A mixed bag rating.

Cons: price, portions, value

Not sure what all the negative reviews are about, just ate there literally hours ago and the meal was outstanding. The waitstaff was wonderful - met the head chef and owners, spoke to them at length - he uses all organic salad and chicken, free-range meat, top of the line fresh fish - only the best ingredients. The salad was very simple but excellently served with a vinaigrette with a good oil:vinegar ratio, the best greens, and a nice portion of warm and fresh goat cheese. Their wine selection is no better or worse than any other Italian restaurant I've visited in Boston (admittedly it would be hard to top Toscano Restaurant's wine list), but the pinot grig they had as the house wine (Caposaldo, I believe it was called) was very robust. I am definitely returning here again and am happy to have found such a quaint and wonderful place to enjoy an Italian atmosphere (they play a wide range of Italian music from classics to new Italian, which is a little weird but it eventually gets back to the good stuff) and Italian cooking. The smell when you walk in just draws you in!

I'm not sure what restaurant all of the other people on this site ate at, but it was certainly not Tartufo. Everyone who wrote a negative review cited some ridiculous reasons for not liking their meal; if you walked in an "JUST WANTED TO RUN!!!11!!" then clearly you shouldn't have dined there and thus your review is of absolutely no help to me, a discerning diner who wants the real story and not some long tale about your family dinner.

Pros: Great atmosphere, great location, draw good clientele (don't serve beer... enough said), plenty of parking across the street or around neighborhood, great desserts

Cons: It is pricey so not something you would want to do very frequently if on a tight budget, but worth it when you do.

I went to this restaurant about two months ago. I found the atmosphere relaxing and even romantic. The service was just as I like, which is not overbearing, but rather friendly, informative and timely. As for the food, I ordered squash filled ravioli in a saffron sauce which was delicious! I have recommended this restaurant to many of my friends, who have also enjoyed their meals. I can't understand the complaints of the portion sizes; it was the perfect amount of food. Much of America is unfortunately used to gigantic portion sizes particularly with Italian food. I thought it was refreshing to have a meal put in front of me that I could actually finish and feel good about. Travel overseas and you will find that the portions are similar. If you want enormous plates of food as soon as you sit down, stick to the Cheesecake Factory; if you're looking for quality over quantity and fast food, this place is for you.

seriously, when i walked in here, i wanted to RUN (but couldn't since i was there for a family dinner...they all agreed afterwards that it was the WORST dinner ever). besides the fact that the food is bland, boring and uninspired, the waitstaff was pushy ad the wine list was A JOKE. literally they had $5/bottle crappy "little boomey" wine for $9/glass and even (gross) by the bottle. this wine sells as cheap liquor stores by the cash register as an impulse item. i was horrified!

We ate at this place a few weeks ago. Needless to say, we were hardly impressed. They put us near the bar and the noise and chit chat from bartender and friends was unbearable. The waitress took her sweet time to serve us as we waited, and waited, and waited. We could not believe the pasta portions for the enormous price charged. Do yourself a favor - don't go, but if you do-skip the pastas. Our main course was not only poorly cooked, but hardly what you call warm by the time we got it which was about an hour after ordering it. Is this place for real? Then the Executive Chef comes out with his stupid smile and we tried to complain but could not even get his attention as the clown went upstairs. We will NEVER AGAIN go to this lousy place and overpriced canteen.

My group of friends always go to a restaurant together to celebrate each other's birthdays. Once of my friends chose Tartufo as his celebration spot. The poor guy could not have been more disappointed! Our reservation was for 7:00 and we were seated right away which was good. Our waitress was ok, but the noise in the room made it difficult to hear her. After ordering wine, it took an hour before she even came back to take appetizer orders. Our appetizers arrived at approximately 8:40. I thought this wait was a little long, but it only got worse from here. When we had not seen our main meals by 9:30, my husband asked and the waitress told us 2 minutes. Another ten minutes went by and another friend at our table asked again, this time to a different gentleman. he basically told our friend, everything is made fresh, just sit down and wait! No apologies at all. We were getting ready to pay for our wine and appetizers because we could not wait any longer, when finally our food arrived at 10:00. One of our friends asked to speak to the manager who refused to come up and talk to us about the wait and lack of service! The portions were small and my Rigatoni with Shrimp had 3 shrimp on it! No one seemed very impressed with the food and when we were finally done eating at 10:30 we asked for the bill. Not only did the restaurant not do a thing to rectify the long wait, they charged us for items we didn't order! Upon leaving the restaurant, we found the owner downstairs and went to speak to him about how awful our experience was and he did not care at all! We were one group of eight people who will definitely NEVER eat at this restaurant again and will be telling all of our friends and family to stay away!

Why all the negative reviews? My wife and I ate there in late October and it was SPLENDID!! Food was incomparable and PERFECTLY cooked. Service was outstanding! I disagree with all negative reviews. Though my wife does little cooking due to our busy schedules and good financial situation, we know good food.

GIVE ME A F - - - ING BREAK! A $22 plate of pasta with about 3 spoonfulls on plate? An "Italain Antipasto" for $12 with 2 slices of prosciutto, 2 tiny pieces of cheese, a tiny pickled artichoke, and a slice of tomato???
What is it - made with GOD DUST?
Do yourself a favor -save your money for some place that gives both quality and VALUE for your hard earned money! DRIVE BY and KEEP GOING!!!!! The chef needs to go back to the mountainside peasant village where he was barely making ends meet and cook for the cows there!

I see all the reviews on this "authentic" Italian ristorante. "Authentic" is a bit stretching it! Try - OVERPRICED to the point of what is almost GOUGING! It may be Italian (and I KNOW Italian!) but its incredibly overpriced and some is not "authentic". Maybe the chef should go back to Italy and start an "authentic" American Restaurant and also take some cooking lessons? My opinion is - skip it and avoid North End "tourist" traps that they call "Italian Restaurants". My suggestion to "Chef Dante" is to "get a life" and stop gouging people just because the Chef thinks it's "upscale". Also - check what your cooks conjure up...and stop dishing out cold or no-value food!

Do yourself a favor --keep driving by this place! We ate there a week ago with my wife and daughter. To begin with, I ordered the Italian antipasto for each of us. I think it was $12 and worth about 2.00 at most! Whata racket!!!! We got a couple of half-slices......proscioutto and salami..very thin slices...3 pieces..small tiny pieces of cheese...a picked baby artichoke...and that was basically it for $12!! Talk about a RIPOFF!
Then my wife decided on a pasta dish....it turns out it was about 4 tablespoons of pasta..which ran about $22. Double ripoff! Finally..our maibn courses..my daughter's was cold (veal dish), my wife's was loaded with some type of sauce DEFINETLY not used in Italy...she left most of it. My steak? Did they buy it at COSCCO? Tough,,,fatty!
We paid a handsome sum in a tiny noisy restaurant for a meal that we got ripped off on! Italian??? My a -s!!
Go to Italy..ANYWHERE in Italy (as we have) and not only is food fantastic, but they give you enough, and prices are realistic. "Authentic"??? I think the chef at Tortufo better get some Italian cooking remedial classes! He must have had high absenteism when they did Italian cooking at whatever joint he "learned" to cook at. PASS BY IT--DON'T BOTHER GOING IN! MISERABLY SMALL PORTIONS, VERY VERY HIGH PRICES FOR WHAT YOU GET, AND SPOTTY QUALITY!

I have to add my 2 cents! I ate at Tartufo twice. Both times I had a mixed result. The antipasto and the pasta were embrassigly small portions , and yes - they way overcharge for those! But, the main courses were very good and the bread and oil at starter was delicious. My problem is that the waiter was way too slow, screwed up one oder, hard to get on several tries, and on one visit it was so darn noisy close to the bar at the windows that I could not even hear myself think. I agree with others - the place is way overpriced. Based on my experiences, I give it an overall below-average rating , considering it's location and prices. The head guy, said to be named "Dante", truly must have no sense of value..or is just making "what the market will bear" . I don't think the place deserves high marks, but I think people should go and check it out, but skip pasta nd antipasto.

I read some of the reviews and agree with much of the negative things - particularly WAY overpriced, spotty quality (sometimes very good, sometimes not so good), value is poor (not enough for your money), not the most "romantic" setting and not for a large group. I wish they would be consistent with the bread and "beef up" their Antipasto dish (don't get it - there is barely enough for a baby with nausea to eat..). Forget pasta dishes - OVERPRICED and embarassingly little amount! You should try it once to see yourself - just stay away from Italian Antipasto and pasta dishes! Careful about toppings on meat dishes -ask or dictate none if you want it simple. DO NOT sit near the bar - traffic and noise. Upstairs is more quiet, but slower service.

Pros: cozy but not romantic, good bread sometimes

Cons: OVERPRICED, poor value, quality not consistent

I tried this place in last week of September 07. You have to be kidding!!! I mean..SOME of the food was OK. But some was not. We got the Italian antipasto and expected a good portion of stuff. Surprise..surprise..we received a big plate each with a couple of slices of cold cuts, a piece of pickled artichoke....a couple of tiny cheese pieces...in total about 6-7 little items..at a HUGE price (compared to plate contents). Forget that pasta dish.....again a TINY portion at huge price! Do they put Gold tiny nuggets in their food? That is the ONLY way one could explain the enormous prices compared to quantity and quality of food. They are lucky that they have a clientele with money in the area that also is ignorant about cooking! And by the way, what does the woman in the place do...the one walking around aimlessly? We won't go back..after getting shafted with a $160 bill for 2 of us...for small qty and mixed bag quality of food. We don't reccomend it - though you can give it a shot once..you might get lucky! Stuff is 40% overpriced!!

Pros: good area

Cons: prices, low qty, mixed quality, noise near bar, ripoff

I'm a redblodded Italian and have eaten at the Tartufo. I'm not at all impressed due to high prices for what you get. Also, some of the stuff is "Americanized" for the dumb people that have no clue about Italian food and that cannot cook. On our last trip (we tried the joint 3 times) in Aug 2007, on a Sat night....it was not good. I asked for the veal chop grilled and nothing on it - it comes out "Americanized" with this awful sweet tasting sauce on it! The big waitor with the mustache was playing games and trying to be funny and cordial - but he could care less except for his tip. My wife's pasta came out barely warm....certainly not "al dente", it was undercooked....was a tiny portion...and overpriced..
What a racket ....they got their customers "buffaloed" with "wana-be" authetic Italian and terrible quality control...
And the wine.............greatly overpriced and no better than "jug wine".
Maybe it was a bad night for the cook and waiters, but I won't be going again.
By the way, on my 1st trip there in July, the food seemed to be preety good....and went downhill by the 2nd trip...and "off the chart" on my last trip..

You can give it a try..as you may end up with a good night and good food..but you will find it overpriced and not consistent! By the way - sit far from the bar (noise, traffic) and stay downstairs (better service).

We ate at Tartufo's last week. It was a mixed bag at best. The place caters to people of jewish faith or j - ws (no slur intended) as they are regular customers with no clue on cooking but love the Italian food and the pretended interest by waiters. Food is fairly good but about 30% overpriced - particularly for small portions you get. A pasta dish is far too high. For God's sake a pound of pasta..good Italian pasta (Barilla) is about $1.30 !! It's the cheapest ingredient but good old Dante - chef/owner - jacks up price out of site! Then there is the older waitor with fake "caring" to get a good tip -- GIVE ME A BREAK!! Our food was a mixed bag, some came out cool (sat too long?) and other came out OK. They usually pass out the nice crunchy french bread slices with a dish of olive oil - but we were given the softer lousy bread. We have gone there about 5 times and it's definetly incosistenf - from very good to below avearge but always "pricy". It's probably worth a trip, but be sure to insist on good french bread (toasted) slices and fresh warm food. Be fussy and let them know it. If you have to - get DANTE the chef and tell him you are very fussy.

I ate at Tartufo last night, and I was appalled by the horrendous service we received. It took us well over an hour to get our food. After about 40 minutes, I asked the waiter if it was coming out, and he said that they would be bringing it out any moment. Half an hour later, we finally received our main courses, which were stone cold by that point. The restaurant was far from busy, so that's not an excuse. Also, bear in mind that our dishes were not hard to make - penne with meatballs and veal scallopini (I've made that dish at home, it took me 25 minutes, and it tasted a lot better than what we were served). By that time, I was so upset by the service that I had lost much of my appetite. After finishing the substandard meal, I asked for the cheque, which took them another 15 minutes, even though I told them that we were in a hurry. I was surprised to see that two main courses, a glass of wine and a coke came out to be $60. The penne alone was $22, an exorbitant amount to pay for such a dish. I left no tip, and after we left, the waiter came running out after us, asking us why we stiffed him. I told him it was pretty obvious, since other than to take our order and bring us our food and check, he never once came and asked us if we needed more drinks or if everything was alright, nor did he tell us that the kitchen would take so long with our dishes.

I am never going to be eating there again.

Skip the antipasto-it's an $11.95 ripoff with only a couple of coldcut half slices, 2-3 tiny pieces of cheese, a half artichoke...a ripoff in terms of value .
The food is expensive but good and authentic. GREAT bread and olive oil to dip it.
Chef (DANTE) is from Souther Italy...used to be head chef at old MARINO restaurant in Cambridge and in USA about 10 years....pricy but very good food and atmosphere and wait staff..

We should know..we are Italian and comments shared by about 18 of us..

-I have dined at Tartufo numerous times and have to say that my experience has been great each and every time. I really don't understand the source of these bad reviews. I have dined as a couple, in a large group and as a single at the bar - Alberto our favorite wiater is great and the couple that own and manage the establishment are first class.

I probably should have read the reviews of this place on Citysearch before I tried this place. I had a very similar experience to the other couple who gave this place a bad review. No believe me, I'm not usually one to complain about things, but when its just this bad, I feel compelled to share. First off, service was lousy. Took close to 10 minutes before anyone even acknowledged we sat down. The place wasn't even that crowded! Asked if we wanted wine, we weren't in the mood so he takes the glasses and wine bottle on the table, and just walks off. How about something else to drink? Good luck. We started with bruschetta, which was on brick hard bread. Didn't finish it. My wife had the pasta dish which wasn't bad but not really worth the price. The chicken was tough, and again not really worth it. The waiter spent most of the evening at the bar chatting it up with some friends then checking to see if anybody needed anything. $60 for two people and awful service = never going back there again. They get a 2 because the guy who played the guitar was good. Can't fault him.

My husband and I made the mistake of going to Tartufo for our first anniversary. The waiter was extremely rude. He brought my husband the wrong dish, and then proceeded to argue when we told him it was wrong. He refused to take it back and get the correct meal. On top of that, when my husband asked for a side of pasta since it was supposed to be part of his meal, the waiter brought him the tiniest dish AND charged us for it. We brought the problem up to the manager, and we received the same treatment. They had absolutely no desire to make sure their customers were satisfied.

Not to mention the prices for not very good food were exorbitant. My chicken was so tough, I needed a steak knife to cut it.
