Try Woodman's in the winter! It is never crowded and the wait is minimal. Their food is fresh and if you're looking for fried, they've got the best there is. It's fabulous for kids, and very comfortable for adults.

It is the home of Fried Clam! It is worth the trip to drive just for the fried clams. I don't know how they do it. The clams come out fresh, not too greasy and light. Delicious

Visitors must go to Woodman's if in the Rockport/Gloucester area. The steamer's are the best that I have ever tasted in my life. I must confess I have never had anything else there (despite weekly visits every summer growing up). As an adult, I have finally noticed the restaurant itself is not beautiful. The long picnic tables and flies add to the charm though!

I can't begin to describe Woodman's fried clams! The outside is lightly crisp but not too crunchy, but not soft either. The clams inside are tender and awesome! Having had two college students int he area, I made sure to get to Woodman's whenever I was up visiting. And it was because of the fried clams that we had my daughter's wedding reception in Woodman's banquet room, The Essex Room. The highlight (besides the newlyweds)? The fried clams!!

This a local stop for all the people who love seafood. They have a great menu which also includes chicken. In the summer the line reach down the sidewalk. They are very quick with the orders. Inside their are booth's and table's which fill up quickly. You should send somebody in your party inside to get a table. The restaurant also has upstairs seating. They do have a limited bar menu. They also will come to your home to serve a clam bake if you wish.

To make it short, we are from southern MA near Cape Cod and know a quality seafood dish when we have one.. We purchased the fried clam plate at Woodmans in Essex MA. It comes with onion rings and fries and we also purchased a side of a 1/2 doz clam cakes.. The clams were very TINY and lacked flavor, the onion rings were tasty but very greasy, the fries were the frozen type at best and the clam cakes were burned, very greasy and tasted HORRIBLE!! I personally would never go back. Do yourself a favor and spend your hard-earned money elsewhere!

Pros: People friendly & nice atmosphere

Cons: As mentioned in the review.. Food was poor.

At first glance, this place doesn't look like anything special. That is because it has been there since the very early 1900's. It is very casual and relaxed... a beachy feel. I, of course, wasn't expecting that up here... so I was overdressed. My stilettos kept going through the planks. I had shrimp cocktail, raw oysters, fried clams, and even a couple drinks! I think I really like this place, because it feels a lot like the atmosphere of Murrells Inlet, SC. I felt right at home, in a place that normally DOES NOT feel like home to me. You look out onto a marsh and the Essex River. Definitely sit upstairs though, because downstairs is crawling with KIDS! You order fried stuff downstairs, and the raw bar is upstairs. It feels like you are on a boat. We were the only ones upstairs on a Tuesday night around 6:30. More people came later, but it was still pleasant. They have fresh lobster, which seems to be the thing up here. I am now completely traumatized by viewing them being cooked and slaughtered, but everyone I was with had one (and loved it!) I feel like it is pretty expensive though, I guess because of the tourists that come there. In SC you can get stuff that good for half the price - warmer weather no extra charge.

PROS: Beautiful View - Fresh Seafood - Historic Place
CONS: EXPENSIVE - crawling with kids and tourists

This place is just overrated. Not worth it. Spend your money someplace else.
1. Clam chowder taste like water
2. Lobster roll real small for the price you're paying. 17.95
3. Lobster for 14.95 a pound.. Too expensive
4. Fried Clam 20.95. O.K but still too expensive
overall i didnt think this place was that good.

We really love Woodman's - it's a must-do thing every year that we visit that area. I had never heard of fried lobster before my son introduced us to it at Woodman's - it's awesome! Definitely not the place for a romantic dinner - but surely the place for a hungry seafood lover!

This place has some great clams! The tartar sauce was awesome! I thought I could only eat Jasper White's sauce. In fact, when I came to woodman's, I stopped by Summer shack and bought some tartar sauce. I tried Woodman's and it was as great as Jasper's!. The chowder was excellent and the fried chicken was finger licking good!

Had lunch at Woodman's this afternoon during my vacation to Boston. Have had a craving for fried clams for the last two years of living on the West coast so a trip was in order. Started off with the chowda, which was very good, lots of clams and potatoes in a mildy creamy base. Lunch was a heaping plate of clam bellies in a light batter and some decent fries and rings. There is no ambiance but when you've been around this long, there's no need for frills. Best way to enjoy this food is outside at a picnic table....
