TERRIBLE! Worst cut I've had in years. Communication was a problem, but mostly, there is absolutely NO styling. Poor cut. THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY'RE DOING. Cheap.

I was deeply disappointed with my experience at Kiwa. Customer service and punctuality isn't their strong suit. I had come on time, thinking that I'd be quickly out of the salon. After dragging myself through the rain, I walked in on time into the salon. The assistant took my jacket. I waited. Sweat formed on my brow from the heat of the salon. They grabbed my jacket. They escorted me to my chair. Prepped me for the stylist, as I sat and stared at the clock....and stared. No peep from the assistant or the front desk that my stylist would need more time. I

With money tight in these hard times, my preference is to go to a salon, where you actually see the stylist in your first half hour there. Time is still money in hard-charging New York City and my money is best spent at another salon that at least offers you a water, if they put layer upon layer of plastic wrap, towels, cape to let you sit in your chair....to wait...wait and wait.

Pros: Convience near the train

Cons: Poor Salon Management

What qualifies as "edgy" or "hip" in this town? Perhaps the other 2 reviews have confused these concepts with the razor they love to employ at this salon. After all it is a shiny object and also distracting when an army of Japanese stylists who can neither speak English nor understand hair requests, even with the presence of a translator are all to eager to feather out your hard-grown hair with one.

Remember that Seinfeld episode when Elaine goes to get her nails done by a Salon and becomes paranoid the employees are talking about her? At Kiwa, expect it to happen. Or learn some Japanese before you go in order to understand because they will neither listen to your requests for a particular haircut and inevitably insult you to your face assuming you do not understand.

A waste of time and money and hair. Take your tresses elsewhere. There are plenty of other Japanese salons that are cheap and get the job done right, if you're one of those "Harajuku" fetishists who can only get their hair done by the Japanese for some odd reason.

If you're looking for an edgy salon that approaches hair as a blank canvas and transforms it into art, then look no further. I gave Junko, my stylist, a drawing of the kind of hairstyle i wanted and she got it right on target. from thence on i've been a regular.

I am so happy to have found this salon! As a first time customer, you get 20% off. The prices are consistent for all stylists and they have a grid to show you the price breaks between full price, 15% off (FIT students) and 20% (1st time customer) so it's very clear what the cost is per service. Everyone was so polite yet friendly and the service was excellent from the shampooing to the styling. I really appreciated that my stylist, Tomomi, was 100% devoted to my hair. She was patient w/ me while Iooked for several pictures of styles that I liked. I never felt like she was rushed or that her attention wasn't completely on my hair, even when she had another client to cut while I was under the dryer. If you are looking to change the texture of your hair but have bone straight hair like me, I would definitely recommend this place b/c they have all types of curly perms and, of course, the japanese straight perm. The only possible downside is that if you don't speak Japanese you may experience a slight language barrier, however, there is a head guy there (i don't know if this is Ken from the previous review?) who help w/ any translation. Also when you leave you get a coupon for your nxt visit and a great coupon for a friend so that is all the more reason to come back.

Pros: cost, customer service, clean, close to #1 train stop

Kiwa is my new favorite! I've been to this Japanese salon twice now, and recieved the same great service both times. The staff are very friendly, give you plenty of attention, and never skimp on the details - taking your coat at the door, complimentary tea, scalp and shoulder massage with your shampoo! Ken is their star stylist - he gave me a really cute, unique haircut. Also, if it's your first time you get a discount, and then you get discount cards for yourself and your friends to use in the future. For the level of service and quality of the cut, $40 was a great bargain.
The only warning I would give is that the japanese styles look best with straight hair. I recommended my curly-haired friend to go there, and though she loved the star treatment, she was only so-so about the cut.

Pros: Service, Value, Great Cut

Cons: not as good with curly hair
