My wife and I ate here on a Sunday afternoon about 4 pm. It was not busy so we did not have to wait to be seated. There were lots to chose from on the menu.

The New England Claim chowder was really good. I had the seafood platter

Good shrimp salad (large shrimp).
Garlic bread has been inconsistent (good sometimes, and old and hard sometimes).
Fish dishes have been good (fresh and not overcooked).
Pasta dishes are good change of pace, but I prefer the traditional seafood dishes

Growing up in New England, I guess I took all the fresh fish for granted. I was excited to try fish and chips here, and was greatly disappointed. I got small pieces of chewy, nasty frozen fish (fresh cod tastes GOOD, not like this) in a cornmeal batter. It's not traditional in that way. I was going to order fried clams, but I'm happy I didn't judging from the fish & chips. The chips were good though, came in a paper bag like on the pier. If you want better fish & chips, go to Dan McGuinness or Blackstone. They both have passable versions (at least the fish part).

I haven't tried their sushi, heard it is pretty good though.

Pros: Sam on tap

Cons: How about using beer batter rather than cornmeal?

I went to Battered and Fried for lunch with some coworkers. The food was excellent (I had coconut shrimp) and the service was great. A little pricey though.

We recently visited Batter'd and Fried for a birthday party. We enjoyed our evening. The customer service was very efficient. All the waiters were very friendly. We first started off at the bar, somewhat disappointed with the lack of beers on tap. We ordered Jalapeno Chips at the bar which were very tasty. At dinner, we ordered the Fish and Chips and Coconut Shrimp. Both dishes were very good. Unlike other neighborhood pubs that come and go, we believe Batter'd and Fried will be around for a long while.

I found that the service and the friendly atmosphere by both workers and patrons made for a wonderful experience. Meeting Manager Joe made it obvious why this restaurant will stay successful for many years. Wish we had this place in Pennsylvania!

This has become one of my favorite restaurants in Nashville. They have such a great variety that ranges from sushi and salads to fried fish and fries. Everything I have ever ordered here has been wonderful and my picky husband will agree. The service is great and the servers always have a great knowledge of the menu. If you haven't been here, go as soon as possible.

I visited here today for the first time since discovering the wonderful little place that is five points. As a Southern California native I have had the pleasure of enjoying a great deal of fresh seafood and sushi my entire life, and moving to Nashville limited that experience to some degree. I took a chance on this place, thinking that if nothing else I could order a burger or something. Well I went for it and ordered two sushi rolls along with salad and miso. The meal was fantastic. The presentation was lovely, the wait staff was attentive, friendly and social.
I loved the decor although I am not from Boston, I appreciated a new style of decor as the "old farmhouse" stuff I see on a regular basis tends to get old and tired restaurant after restaurant.
I enjoyed the seating, the outdoor eating area was a nice option and comfortable, yet professional indoor dining areas were nice as well. I appreciated that is was very clean, tidy and well kept as all restaurants should be and was a far cry from the "historical" diner I tried two days earlier where I discovered old kitchen untensils, grease ridden seating, broken tile work and make shift storage containers.
This place along with other family friendly, upbeat places in East Nashville offer people a new take on the "home cookin" vibe that Nashville some times evokes. It's nice to see a place representative of the more diverse tastes and personalities of Nashville's residents.
All stars, will definitely return and have already reccommended it.

Pros: Friendly wait staff, fresh sushi, great area

Cons: I visited on lunch and couldnt have a beer!

This was my first experience eating at B&F.

the good:
the sushi was fresh and on target
the seared tuna was excellent
the fried oysters were tasty
the service was superb

the bad:
no chopsticks at a sushi bar? what's up with that? oh well, I guess that it is considered finger food anyway
no oysters available for an oyster shooter? unfortunately, it was Tuesday and 241 oyster night.. the server save the day by "finding" a couple of oysters for our shooters and buying us a beer ;-)
no rice available as a side

Overall it was a mixed bag of good and disappointment. I have no complaints about the food and the server picked up the ball for the disppointments handed to him by the management and greatly improved the experience.

I have slowly been finding my way around East Nashville. It's a hip place, you see. Finally one day I spotted the Boston Based restaurant Batter'd & Fried... I have also read many a cautionary review of the place. Mainly the Nashville Scene and a lot of how many folks were weary of just fried stuff. I don't have a problem with fried stuff, especially if you have ever been to Cape Cod and had their fried clams! (wow) It is also a treat to go to Kearney, NJ and sample *their* fish and chips, made by real Scottish and Irish folks.

But what I got from an order of calamari as an appetizer and fish and chips as my entre was pretty much an astoundingly bland meal. I was astounded that even the *cole slaw* was nearly devoid of any manner of flavor. The coating seemed to be corn meal rather than a batter. But nonetheless, I don't remember the meal for any manner of distinct flavor. I don't know how they do it... Oh yeah, the french fried "chips" were overcooked. Sadly I lost my mojo and did not send the whole mess back to the kitchen.

One more chance for me, then I will either embrace or never return.

For the BEST fish and chips in Nashville?? - Blackstone Brewery. I kid you not.

Fun facts:
1. From what I can gather, Batter'd & fried, Beyond the edge, Alley Cat, and Wave Sushi are all owned by Matt Charette. I think he is spreading himself a little thin...

2. Of the 36 current reviews of this establishment on this site TWENTY THREE reviews were from members with only ONE review, a review of batter'd & fried. I wonder why?

Cons: Bland food - cant recall any flavor

My dad took me here several times when they first opened up, and I have been begging him to take me back! The foodis INCREDIBLE, mainly the spicy stuff and the fish and chips. It's cool and original how they also serve your french fries in a separate paper bag with your meal. The price is also pretty reasonable. My mouth waters just thinking of this place. The bartender was also very friendly with us and we had pretty good service. Highly recommended!

My husband and I eat out a lot at the same old places so we decided to cross the river and venture to the East side to try out this restaurant. I have to say I was scared, since I had read so many bad reviews here. We really weren't expecting much but everything was really great! We ordered fried mushrooms as an appetizer and they tasted just like I expected, which was good but I can see how someone might refer to them as "so-so" since they are just fried mushrooms - no bells and whistles - so if you want gourmet fried mushrooms, you might want to go somewhere else.

For our entrees, my husband got the Fried Grouper fingers and I got two sushi rolls. His sides were a house salad (which he liked except for the shredded cheddar cheese on top - not his first choice for a salad) and fries, which he said were pretty good. My sushi rolls were excellent - I would definitely come back here for that! They were just different enough to make them stand out of the sushi crowd. The Fried Grouper fingers were light and tasty and were served with a buffalo sauce that I loved - it had a full buffalo flavor without burning my tongue off. Next time I go I will definitely try the Buffalo Chicken Salad.

Basically, we ordered way too much and ate just about all of it. I left high on food and very happy that we decided to make the trip! I will definitely be back for either sushi or more of the buffalo sauce!

For someone born and raised on New Enlgland Style seafood, I enjoyed B&F immensley! The service was terrific, and the food was authentic. I've read many of the negative reviews, and have to think these people have lived with the Captain D's version of seafood too long. This is by far the best fried seafood I have had in the south. The atmosphere is nice, love the Red Sox memorabilia. Just had Father's Day dinner with my borther and Father, both New Englander's, and we were all impressed. The owner, who happens to be fro the next town over from my hometown, sat down and spent an hour talking to us. Great place to catch a Sox game and eat some reasonably priced food. If you are looking for a salad, and some wine go somewhere else, this place is not for you! If you are a Yankees fan, go somewhere else, this place is not for you either. If you love New England Seafood, good service, and the Red Sox you will LOVE this joint. I live in Mount Juliet and make the 30 min. drive a few times a month, its worth it.

Had to comment on the comment that "grechen" left.. i'm actually the mother of two of those 8 kids that they were seated next to and I feel I have to defend battered and fried a wee bit. I think the food is also sort of "so so" but, as far as the wait staff not caring about our kids - you are totally wrong, sort of - see they cared about our kids in a different way than you were hoping.. They went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable and enjoying our small birthday celebration. I apologize for seeming to "not care" about our children who were, actually, not misbehaving at all (but, I'll cut you some slack - when there are 8 of 'em, even well behaved children are loud).
As a person who works in the restaurant industry, you should know that the customer is always welcome to ask to be moved (especially in a place like battered n' fried - it's not like you walked into margot on a busy friday night) so take control of your situation. Not being responsible for where you might PREFER to sit and THEN complaining about it online for other potential customers to read is NOT being polite - it's being lame. Lamelamelame.
Furthermore, I know exactly where you sat and we left about 20 minutes after you arrived and started sneering at us. So, only part of your meal was disrupted by our unruly brood of obnoxiously behaved children.
My recommendation regarding battered n' fried: yes, the food is kind of so so.. but as a group of many with children to be accomodated, the staff was friendly and helpful and went way out of their way to make sure our last minute dinner plans were fun and relaxed. It's a neighborhood place and, whether some folks like it or not, us east nashville folks have babies and STILL like to have dinner out.. Thank goodness that the business owners in our neighborhood would rather accomodate us than people who might walk in an expect the wait staff to read their minds... you gots ta speak up to get what'cha want in this world.

The sushi is fabulous and I eat it here about three times a week. The servers are wonderful, especially Nate. In response to a previous review that complains about the frozen sushi fish, I'd like to say that frozen fish is a reality we all have to face in the great landlocked state of Tennessee...unless it is catfish of course!

Decent atmosphere, no smoking was nice....but the fried food was HORRIBLE. We started off with the fried calamari....it was mushy and way too greasy. Ive had better out of a box at the grocery store. Then I got the fish and chips and my girlfriend got the fried sampler platter. Same story. Everything was soft and mushy and way too greasy. It was really pretty gross. Maybe they have good sushi or soup, but the fried food is off limits.

Let me start by saying that the restaurant was very clean, we were seated promptly and our server was excellent. The only reason I did not give a 9 or 10 is that I found a hair in my sushi. I can not comment on how the sushi was although I had almost finished it before I found the hair. Being that we were in a hurry, I did not tell the server about it. I'm sure he would have taken care of that portion of the meal though. My girl friend had the Fish and Chips, and it was excellent. Overall it was a good experience. We will go back, though I will not be getting the sushi. I think the guy needs a hair net.

Was consistently unimpressed with the offerings at B & F - though I must admit that their fries have improved drastically - until the addition of the Wave Sushi Bar. Finally, sushi in Five Points. Why, Lord, has this taken so long. Rumor has it that once the clientele is established that it will move into more spacious, less fried-smelling digs. Amen.

If I had to review them in one word, i'd say: BLAH. Food was average. I could get the same boring french fries (why do they come in a paper sack that only makes them soggy?!) and average fried shrimp at Applebees. My date's fish was also blah and very average. Absolutely nothing special about either of our meals. It took the waitress 15 minutes to return to check on us, and by then the blah soggy vegetables that really needed salt (there was none on any of the tables) were cold and salt couldn't help them.

The menu is very limited. No lobster anywhere on it - yet they claim to be a boston seafood house. The menu is very small and not at all impressive. Throwing a couple of photos of boston on the walls does not make you a boston seafood house.

Also, they seated us, a young couple with no kids, right next to a table of EIGHT young children. An empty restaurant at 4:30 on a sunday night, and yet they seat us so right behind us is a table filled with children throwing toys and crayons, beating on the table, and shouting. The restaurant staff saw nothing wrong with this. The parents, located at a DIFFERENT table, also seemed to see nothing wrong with this. We were too polite to ask to be reseated, but we should have.

We wont be going back. I'll visit the frozen seafood section of Publix and fry them up at home for a fraction of the price.

I have been eating at Batter'd since they opened their doors. The service and atmosphere has always been great, and the menu continues to be refined and fine-tuned. The latest addition, a sushi bar, is fantastic. I should say that I was never a huge fan of sushi, but ever since I had the caterpillar roll (the special that night) and the fire crunch, I can not get enough. The fries are the best in town, and their kid's menu is great. I love the fact that there is no smoking so I can feel good about bringing my daughter there even for dinner. Batter'd fits in perfectly in East Nashville and is a great addition to the selection of bars and restaurants in that area. I was in one night and the owner's father (who was a gourmet chef and was visiting from the Boston area) was personally cooking the special (lump crab stuffed shrimp). You can't get more "cool-East-Nashville" than that!

Pros: Sushi, Atmosphere, Service

Cons: Parking

.

We got the grouper tenders, which I'd heard were good, and they were very good, but with only 5 (?) small tenders, I felt like I'd just eaten an appetizer and was ready for the main course.

Nice atmosphere, smells good. Sam Adams on draft. Wish they had a few additional styles of Sam Adams.

I have ordered carry-out twice from this place. The clam chowder was fabulous both times. Unfortunately I was disappointed in the fish both times. The fries have improved significantly. Whatever you do, don't go for the crab cakes. (I echo the critique of lkr322).
To the chef: please hang in there!

I live in East Nashville and LOVE to support neighborhood businesses including the restaurants. I wanted very much to enjoy this place. A friend and I stopped in for dinner the other night, hoping for an enjoyable meal. Were we ever disappointed with the food! The service was great, as was the decor. The wine list was short, but not without some enjoyable choices. We had several items including oysters, crab cakes, and a "special" salmon salad. The oysters were fine, not great. The crab cakes were a HUGE disappointment, rubbery and overcooked with little crab in them. What a waste of crab. The largest disappointment was the bbq-lime salmon salad. The bbq sauce was very thick and sweet, much too much for the overcooked salmon to take. What a horrible miss in balancing flavors and textures. Maybe I will return to try something "battered and fried," but it is unlikely. I think I might find better at Captain D's in those rare times I crave something battered and fried. Some bottled spring water would have been nice also for diners who do not drink tap water.

Pros: The barber shop and laundry mat are gone.

Cons: The food.

I know tons of people that have eaten there and they said that it really was good food and great atmosphere. Just haven't had the time to find out myself. I think that I will take the time and find out for myself.

Let me preface this by stating that I really wanted to like this place. I love East Nashville, spend most of my time there, and enjoy seafood. I was quite impressed with the menu, service was good, and the place has a nice ambiance. However, the important part of any restaurant is the food. My group ordered a large selection of appetizers: the fried jalapenos, fried shrimp, fried clams, crab cakes, french fries, and raw oysters. The fries and oysters were both good, shrimp was pretty fair, everything else was subpar. I tend to agree with some of the prior reviews that the fried food tasted similar to the fried foods one might purchase at Sam's club, which is disappointing considering the name of the restaurant is "battered and fried". The crab cakes especially were very poor and had a rubbery texture. I think that overall a few tweaks in the food quality and frying techniques would make a huge difference. That being said this is a place that I will give a second chance, but if the food does not improve I see it as nothing more than a place to drop in on occasion and grab a beer and a few oysters.

Last night 18 of us from our softball team drop in with out a reservation after our game at shelby park. They let us take over one whole side of the patio and they didn't mind that most of us where still in uniform. Ussually when we go in a large group it is pretty crazy, but last night it went so smooth getting our food and drinks and most important our checks. Without a doubt the Buffalo Shrimp was the tables favorite. We loved it so much we kept calling friends who were on other teams to come and join us. I think we have found our new post game hang out.

I really enjoy dinning here. Our daughter is 18 months and we love taking her with us for an early dinner. Everyone is so nice to her even when she drops her animal crackers all over the floor. We never have trouble getting her to eat some of our fish. My husband ussually gets what ever the daily special is but I am stuck on the Grouper tenders. Thanks for the non-smoking and being so family welcoming.

Congratulations to all involved with Batter'd & Fried. I love going there with my girlfriends for girls night, I love going there with My husband for date night and I love taking my kids there so I don't have to cook. I love the oysters and just hanging out and relaxing. The non-smoking is a great touch. I don't always eat when I go there, I just love the look and the feel of the bar.

Thanks, its my favorite place to hang out.

The menu has changed, but the food is still bad. It's mired in grease, hardly the fresh catch seafood taste I was hoping for. I ate the chip/fries, just so I could eat something. And how can you mess up fries? Well, they come in a cute little brown paper bag that just traps the heat and makes them soggy. I ate out on what is called their "patio," but really it's just like five parking spaces with tents.

The first time I went here I was disappointed with the limited selection, specifically, no salads anywhere to be found and everything was fried. So I sent an e-mail to the owner as he askes for feed back on the menu. I was surprised and impressed with a very prompt response. He said that they were working on expanding the new menu and He would let me know when it was finished, but he has already added salads to the menu.

Last Thursday we went back and wow, what a selection. Salads, seared specials, and Cheese Burgers. But I would still like an alternative to Fries, like a baked potato, but over all it was great.

I had the Fried Grouper on a salad. Way to go guys!

No doubt about it they have the best fish and chips in nashville. I want to try something else when I go but I just keep getting the fish and chips. The Fish is so moist and fresh almost buttery in a way and the batter has such a unique flavor. Not like anything I have ever had before and when you dip it in their tartar sauce it is amazing but they don't give you enough of it. But over all, Two thumbs up!

My Wife and I both work for the Metro Courts so we are always looking for a place to go for lunch that is easy to get to and easy to get in and out quickly. We recently discovered a new restaurant about three minutes from downtown and less than ten from Metro Center. The fried seafood over a fresh salad is wonderful and such a nice change of pace from what we are ussually getting.

We have enjoyed lunch there so much we have gone there several times for dinner. After talking with a very nice young man the other day, who I think is the manager or maybe the owner, he told us about the reviews and asked if we would mind writing what we told him on this web site. At the risk of giving away the best kept secret in Nashville, We really enjoy this restaurant.

Monday was my birthday, so when my girlfriend asked me what I wanted to do I told her that I wanted to go have dinner at the new Boston place and whatch the Redsox play the Yankees.

So she made a reservation for 6 of us. When I walked in I felt like I was at a place back home in Holyoke, Mass. The Redsox stuff on the walls was awesome. They had a table reserved for us where we could whatch the game. Everything was great, the food was awesome. I have been searching for a place that served great seafood like I used to get at Bernies just outside of Westover. No Doubt I have found it. I will definatley be back.

I went out to this place for the probably tenth time since its been open last night and as ussual I ran into the owner. I was telling him how much I loved his restaurant and how I have trouble deciding between the Grouper and the Coconut Shrimp. Anyway he said with the new menu they just came out with I coud get a small portion of both. Which I did. Then he told me about what was going on in this web site and asked me to write a real review as a customer.

This place has a great vibe, it is warm and welcoming. The food is the best part. I can't speek for much other than the Grouper Tenders and the Coconut shrimp but they have been great everytime I have been there. Like I said, I have eaten there at least ten times so far.

My boyfriend dragged me to this new seafood restaurant he heard about at work. He loves seafood, I, on the other hand, hate seafood. So I was not looking forward to going. But when I got the menu, I had the option of chicken tenders, pasta, or a burger. I opted for the Boston Burger with french fries and cole slaw. Forget the seafood get the burger and fries. The burger was so juicy and delicious and the fries were fantastic and served in this little brown paper bag. I ussually like honey mustard with my fries but they didn't have any, and they were still good with regular mustard. My boyfriend got the Fried Oysters and some shrimp. He said they were fantastic. By the way, the patio was wonderful too. This land lover will defanitly be back for the Boston Burger.

I went the other night because I heard they had the Sox Games on. I went to Citysearch to get directions and I read some of the reviews. It was obvious reading some of the comments that someone has it out for this place. So I went to judge for myself. I tried the fish and chips and they were great, just like back home, the bartender said they have fresh Cod shipped in a few times a week. I tell you it was great and the sox won. I told the bartender about the reviews and he asked if I would right one, so here you are because I hate to see such a great place being trashed. All I can say is Judge for yourself. You wont be disappointed.

The food is excellant. We had the seafood skins and calamari to start, then moved on to great oysters. The outside seating on the patio made the night complete. Not too mention the food quality for the price was great. I would recommend this anytime someone wants a great dinner out.

Its about time we had a restaurant in Nashville that caters to us "land locked" folks. I'm from the coast and have always had access to fresh seafood. Although Nashville is not notorious for seafood, I can say that Batter'd & Fried is. My favorite menu item is the oysters on the half shell (when they are in season). I must have eaten 2-3 dozen myself one night. The soups are delicious and made with the perfect mix of ingredients. The batter on the seafood items is not too heavy and goes perfect with an ice-cold beer! Just sitting in the dining room or in the bar makes you feel like you are in a local Boston seafood house. The prices are good and the service is even better. Batter'd & Fried is turning out to be one of my favorite new hangouts!

This restaurant has a great, comfortable feel to it. I have found myself staying for hours. Great place to meet with friends. Food is authentic, and i love the non-fried specials.
The batter they use is way better then most places in nashville, and i don't feel like Im biting into a ball of grease when i eat it. I Like the crab cakes, fried pickles and i think their coleslaw is great. I have been recommending this place to all my friends, and with the addition of a patio right on the main drag its a great place to people watch.

From top to bottom, the menu is a disappointment. I tried to give this place a chance (too many chances) because I like to see neighborhood businesses succeed, but this restaurant is shameful. I've tried about 50% of the menu entrees and all of them were tasteless, nothing like the New England style seafood houses that it tries to replicate.

This restaurant is best for specialty dining. They usually run out of oysters early in the night, so if you get there early you can have a dozen and one of the nice bottle beers for a quick after-work dinner. Otherwise, you'll get the same taste in your grocer's freezer from microwave fish sticks. No kidding, folks.

I am from New England and I can tell you this was the most awful attempt at replicating good New England Seafood I have ever encountered. Better seafood can be found at your local fast food chain. The only seafood that had any flavor at all were the oysters, and sadly the taste was not a pleasent experience. The fried shrimp was flattened out and bland, the clam strips were soggy, had an odd texture, and were absolutely flavorless. The french fries were okay and we were grateful they came in a paper bag so we had a handy receptacle to discreetly dispose of the food that was just too awful to swallow.

I've been to Batter'd & Fried twice now and I must say it is one of my favorite places in Nashville! When we first walked in we were expecting more of a bar rather than a pretty upscale restaurant, but we were pleasantly greeted by the owner and enjoyed a great night. Also, this is a SMOKE-FREE restaurant, which automatically makes it a winner in my book. Food is wonderful and fresh, service is great and its rather reasonable for 2 to dine ($30.00 after tip). I would highly recommend this restaurant, also it's sister bar ' Beyond The Edge' is right next door if you want to get more of the sports bar atmosphere after dinner.
