As of Mar 3 2009, this place is closed. I still have equipment in my locker, and I don't know whether I'll ever be able to retrieve it - or if I'll ever get the fees that are owed me. It's shocking to think that Powerhouse corporate has done nothing to hold these owners to a higher level of business practices.

And all the stories about floods are absolutely true. So even if this place switches owners, I wouldn't join.

Pros: None.

Cons: It closed without contactin members or trainers - I would never again trust a PowerhouseGym

.

Just spend the extra money and go to NYSC, Equinox, or etc. Trainers and staff are not friendly and the facility is not the best place for a good workout. They had a water leak and gym was closed for a week and no emails were sent to the members letting them know when they would be open again and no one would answer the phone nor was their a voicemail set up. I'm stuck in a contract with them still September, but I joined another gym anyway. Not worth the aggravation at Powerhouse.

Pros: Easy from Gran Central

Cons: Unfriendly, not very professional.

The workout equipment itself is good and there is enough of it to go around. However, the showers only had boiling hot water for over a month and the manager was very rude about fixing it/giving dates for when it would be fixed, would not give me corporate contact info and would not give us anything in return. Also they have not had shampoo in the men's room for over 2 weeks. Worst of all, I showed up the gym around 8am monday morning as I always do, to find a note on the door indicating that it was closed due to flooding, which meant i went to work 1 1/2 hours early with no workout and no shower- they did not email until 11 that morning to say it was closed. Then when i emailed all 3 of the contacts on the website and called the gym wednesday night, thursday morning and thursday aftenroon- i got no response. nothing via email, and no one picked up the phone. i have no idea if the gym is open, or whether it will reopen. honestly, what kind of an absurd, unreliable and frustrating place is this?! Better spend double or triple and get your money's worth. I have had to work out in the park this past week. I feel like I have completely wasted my $400

Pros: good equipment, day staff is friendly

Cons: facility is unreliable and management is completely irresponsible and not-responsive

Powerhouse gym is great if you are just looking for a treadmill and some weights to work out. I've never had a problem with any of the staff or equipment there (the staff are very friendly!) But if you expect to take a shower here- forget it. The showers are either SCALDING hot or FREEZING cold. There is no middle- EVER. There have been multiple complaints, and nothing has ever been resolved. If you are planning to go to the gym before you go to work, don't plan on taking a shower afterward.

This gym has decent equipment but too much quido music I thought I was at tunes in August. Just because, I want to be in shape, it doesn't mean I'm a quido. The showers did have huge problems with hot water, but if you let them run for 10min you're usually okay. My major gripe was that I paid $40/month to rent a locker and when it lapsed they cleaned it out. I had some decent gear in it, sneakers, UnderArmour clothes and assorted other apparel. They simply took it all and tossed it. My sneakers were $130 Asics. I talked to the gym staff, "we can't help you". I emailed corporate, NO RESPONSE.

It was just sad. I'm paying to go to a gym that is stealing/throwing out my gear.

Everything was perfect! The equipment, the atmosphere, the people that workout there and the trainers everything was great. I will workout there everytime I go to New York on business.

Pros: Everything was perfect..

Cons: Nothing was poor

Very clean with very good equipment. Not a meat market atmosphere. I train there whenever in the City and refer all my friends there (those who work in the City became members).

Best gym in NYC by far. Even Jay Cutler (Mr. O) is seen training there. The staff is always helpfull and they know all there members on a first name basis. Always clean and great place to train. Very resonable prices and perfect location. Finally NYC has a fitness center that feels like your own. You couldn't ask for any more.

Pros: You feel like part of the Powerhouse Family instead of just a number.

Cons: None

For about 600 dollars a year you can get a no frills gym. It?s the jet blue of gyms. Broken equipment no classes no sauna and most of the time no hot water in the showers. Powerhouse has poorly trained staff that will harass you nonstop to sell personal training. Ask them for a list of their clients who have met their weight loss goals; you will stop them dead in their tracks. Be prepared to bring your own towels as theirs are smelly and dirty, that?s what happens when you wash in cold water.
Before you sign ask for a free pass then go at 5pm and talk to the members in the locker room. The owner refuses to leave paper towels in the ladies restroom as he claims the members flush it and it blocks his pipes. Now that you know that the ladies have no paper towels---wonder what they wipe their hands on before they use the equipment.
Gym is below street level at grand central so watch out for large crawling creatures in the locker-room.
Gym is smoke & mirrors try using your headset on the equipment none of the connections work. The staff will BS you with all the new equipment their getting ---however you will never see it. Powerhouse is a rip-off
