The hardest ticket to find tourist filled in Washington is the White House Tour. At one time not too long ago, you could get tickets for a tour that day. Now you must go through your Representative in Congress. The tours are held in the morning and only include the east wing and the main house. No wing wing excursions. The house is the domain of the first lady and she is responsible for the decor although she does have a lot of help. Once while the Clinton's were living there I did notice a very modern Georgia O'Keeffe in the very federalist style Green Room. The tour is short only covering the first floor and surround by security the whole time.

But the real reason for visiting the White House is get a connection to history. To walk the halls where Washington walked. Okay Washington never lived here. The sit in the room where Lincoln sat. Okay the whole place was gutted and rebuilt in 1950. Even the floor boards are gone.

So what is the real reason to to visit the White House. Of course it's to tell everyone of your friends that you were at the White House. So is that worth the price of admission. BTW it's free.

Pros: Great history, art and bragging rights
Cons: Hard to get tickets, and constant security
