I went to Staghorn Steakhouse earlier this week at 4pm while visiting NYC on business. Technically they were closed and didn't start serving dinner until 5pm but the manager took pity on me and let me be seated and opened the kitchen. He even proceeded to wait on me himself and made exceptions to the menu for me. All totaled I had at least four people waiting on me hand and foot. It was the best experience I've had in all my trips to NYC. \n

Three of us went in after around 8:30 for dinner on a Saturday night. The place was empty. That should have been the first clue. We ordered drinks and looked at the menu. Too pricey. We told the waiter we would just be enjoying our drinks. I guess the mgmt didn't like that we weren't spending money as he paced up and down in front of us, glaring, mumbling under his breath, and at one point, I thought he was going to remove the table cloth right out from under us. He didn't, but he did strip the table while we finishing our cocktails. We were the only ones in the place and they're acting like we're putting them out. No surprise to me that nobody else was there and we certainly won't be returning.

Went there friday Febr 4th with 2 other friends, the manager was really annoyed that we had the ""ba''lls"" to ask him to have a table for 3,the hostess was so rude and so uneducated(Albanian Mgt,Albanian Hostess),she almost threw the menus in our faces. The wait staff was really nice, food not to great, restaurant really beautiful, but i don`t know how in the world the owners don`t see what`s going on in that place! The manager was cursing very loud, the hostess looked like she never had a bath in her life, very very bad experience!!Please stay away from that place, don`t waste your money&your energy,we are treated like garbage with your own money!!!

I have to agree with some of the others here. The service was AWFUL! The food was ok, but pricey for what it is and definitely nothing spectacular. If it were cheaper, I'd go back for the food in a pinch but the service guarantees I won't be back.

Worst service I have ever experienced. Rude and does not care less. Menu is very poor and basic.\n\nDo not go there, even if it is the only place open in the area (which is never the case)...IT IS BAD

I headed to the Staghorn based on the 4.5 star rating. it must have changed hands recently. The new owners have made it as dead as doornail. I was the ONLY person in the restaurant on a Thursday night at 8 pm. Drinks were $12 each!!! I drank my drink and left before ordering any food -- the owners appear to not understand the NYC market at all. I would avoid this place at all costs.\n

Went to Staghorn last night for dinner before the Big East tournament. Other than it's proximity to MSG, there really are no redeaming qualities to this place. The proprietors and waitstaff are Eastern European (I think Romanian) trying to operate an American steakhouse. It's not working... First, our waiter definitely had some english problems - had significant difficulty communicating with us - we had no confidence our order would be correct when it arrived at the table. Second, the waiter completely lost interest in us when we decided not to order wine. We were drinking beers, and getting additional rounds was like pulling teeth. You should not have to flag down your waiter to order another drink - they should just be checking on you. Come to think of it, not one time did our waiter stop by to check in on our meal... The food was OK, but at that price-point, I want to be wowed. Just really nothing special about their salad, steak, or fries. Bathroom was pretty aweful - the first time i used it, there was a roll of paper towels on the sink to dry your hands - the second time, they were out of paper towels AND someone had managed to vomit in/around the sink... how does that go unnoticed/uncleaned my management??? \r\n\r\nI was so taken aback by this place last night that i wrote myself a reminder to write a review this morning... This is the first time I've ever left a review (let alone a negative one)...\r\n\r\nIgnore all the positive feedback on this place. The writers are either lying or have never dined at a decent enough restaraunt for comparison purposes. Just stay away from Staghorn. For the money, you can just about eat ANYWHERE else.

Pros: Decent ambience (I suppose)

Cons: Sub-par food for price point, disinterested wait staff

.

This place is spectacular, they are Romanian, they know fine service. Best porterhouse steak anywhere (sorry Ben Benson) and a reasonable number $$$. Within easy walking distance of the Garden (unless it is raining), and never too crowded to take in a special meal. I always make reservations, but I think you could chance just showing up.\r\n\r\n

We travelled to New York City from England to stay for a week at New Year. When we asked our hotel concierge if they could recommend a lively American steakhouse for the Saturday night, this is where he sent us. When we arrived, we could not see through the window that the restaurant only had one other couple eating, otherwise we may not have gone in. We went in and the lady who greeted us was friendly and professional, we were shown to our table and given menus. We chose to have a steak each and share the side order of mashed potatoes but we were made to feel as if we should have ordered starters too (my fiance was sure he heard the waiter say to te manager ""they've only ordered steak""). Shortly after we arrived, the other couple left and one other group of people came in. The restaurant was extremely quiet and had no atmosphere whatsoever. While eating our meal, it felt as if the 3 waiters were circling our table like sharks, always hovering close by to attend to our every need. We found this to be intimidating and irritating. The waiters were all Italian American and would talk amongst themselves in Italian, which just added to the intimidation for us. \r\n\r\nWhen the bill came, though it was our own fault, we did not notice that they had added 20% tip for themselves and paid by card, adding $40 tip in cash. We only noticed the next day when we looked at the receipt, but I feel that not only was it extremely dishonest not to bring it to our attention that the tip had been added into the bill just to be sure we were aware, but very cheeky to add 20% tip when I would have personally paid a minimum of 15% as the service was over-bearing, over-attentive and intimidating. \r\n\r\nThere were more staff than customers and I could not wait to leave. I could not have been more disappointed with that choice for a Saturday night, and would recommend it perhaps for business dinners but nothing more than that.

Last week I was hosted by a business associate and we were seated within just a few minutes of our 8 PM reservation time. My host had calamari and lamb chops , and I had onion soup and salmon. I don't think these items could have been better anywhere--spectacular presentation, freshness, and flavors. The restaurant was very busy--even on a Wednesday night.\r\n\r\nOur waiter was professional and efficient--superb and attentive service to match the expertly prepared food. Our table for 2 was comfortable and not too noisy considering how busy the place was.\r\nSo, Staghorn is appropriate for special occasions and expense account meals. You get what you pay for and when you buy dinner here, you receive quality dining at its best. So, I rate Staghorn 5 stars.\r\n

I am a frequent traveler and generally stick to my zagat recommended favorites when on the road, but last week, when my boyfriend accompanied me on a trip to New York, I let him pick the restaurant. I had never heard of Staghorn, so I was skeptical, but it was close to the hotel, so we decided to give it a try. Everything was excellent - the wine list was comprehensive but not overwhelming and the owner was well-versed and capable of giving a few good recommendations. The buffalo mozzarella and tomato salad was perfect and plenty big enought to split. We shared the porterhouse for two and some hashbrowns, and again, everything was excellent - including the service. The owner offered us a complimentary dessert that he promised would top anything at Serendipity3 - and he was right - molten chocolate cake with a spot-on consistency of brownie/pudding. Yum. I would definitely go back and take clients or friends.

I was looking for a steakhouse where I could take my parents, who were celebrating their anniversary, and came across Staghorn. What a find! The servers were extremely attentive and made our experience delightful. We ordered the porterhouse for 3 (our usual steakhouse order). It was perfectly cooked and practically melted in our mouths. We ate an amazing creamed spinach and a large heaping of delicious hashed browns. I can not wait to go back!

If Peter Luger's is the standard on what all steak houses are compared against, then this place is a close second. French onion soup had excellent flavor and texture with the broth containing thinly sliced onions. The fried calamari was freshly cooked. We decided on the Porter House for 2 so we can compare to Peter Luger's and it was excellent. Even the steak sauce had excellent flavor with a nice crips bite of horshradish.\r\nHash brown and onion rings excellent side dishes. \r\n Glass of red wine only $10, compared to $24 at Capital Grill for there house wine. \r\nThe staff there can be a bit overattentive, however, they are polite and unlike other people who reviewed this place, i never felt rushed nor did they take food away while I still eating. \r\n\r\nSo over all for two people we spent under $150 without tip for a great dinner. If your coming in from NJ, its easy to get to from the tunnel and easy to get back home. \r\n\r\nParking across the street is very convienient and they will even validate your ticket at the restaurant, so you only pay $15, which is a deal to park in midtown on a Friday nite.

Cons: The staff can be bit more relaxed, but its not too overbearing.

We decided to check out Staghorn on a recent NYC trip, I chose it because of the ratings on here and I was so glad we did! The french onion was amazing and ceaser salad was just as good. We chose the filet and although it was very tasty, it tasted a little off from some other $40 steaks that I've had. All in all, it was a very relaxing atmosphere and I would highly recommend.

I heard there was a good steakhouse near Penn station and decided to check it out. The location seemed unusual, but worth the gamble. Four of my friends and I went on a Thursday night. It was pretty crowded but not jam-packed, which made for a comfortable meal. The waiters were quick and professional. The maitre de was helpful with choosing a wine from the pretty impressive list. The canadian bacon appetizer was the perfect starter. ALso I stuck to the classic porterhouse (medium rare) and was happy to find a juicy and generously sized cut. Only one friend went for seafood and loved the Dover sole. Onion rings were crisp and not greasy. The hashed browns were definitely among the best I have had in NY. Defintely reccommend this restaurant that stick to fair prices, good service, and great steak.

I went to Staghorn yesterday with a group of friends and we were suprised at the quality dining experience we had. To start we had the seafood bouquet with some of the best shrimp and oysters. Then we moved to the Porterhouse steak for four, perfectly cooked. The wine list was also very good. Such a great surprise in the Garment district. We will be back!

Based on the good reviews my fiance and I checked this place out last Friday. After our dining experience I seriously question the legitimacy of the prior reviews.\r\n\r\nWhile friendly, the service was incompetent. I know nothing about lighting, but the florescent lighting at the bar was horrible and the light they kept flipping on the ""wine cellar"" under the stairs was very distracting. It appeared that one of the servers spent a lot of time sitting in there in the dark on a stool as there was no one in the restaurant.\r\n\r\nBoth of our steaks were severely over cooked and there were all kinds of bone shards in my crab. Uncle Jacks is a few blocks away as is Keens. Both would be a much better dining experience.\r\n

Get there quick because by next week they will be selling all the fancy furniture and kitchen equipment on EBay! Where do I begin. They pour a fantastic glass of ice water and that's it! The bread on the table was harder than titanium. Maybe it wasn't supposed to be eaten just for decoration. The bacon appetizer doesn't even compare to Army MREs. I would say maybe on par with hospital food. The shrimp cocktail was just average until my waiter put his dirty sleeve in my plate...Thank you now its really tasty. I think the waitstaff was hired away from the KFC down the block. This place is history!!

I would say maybe on par with hospital food. The shrimp cocktail was just average until my waiter put his dirty sleeve in my plate...Thank you now its really tasty. I think the waitstaff was hired away from the KFC down the block. This place is history!!

Pros: Brand new clean bathrooms

Cons: Expensive

awful start to finish. went on a nice thursday night and we were 1 of only 2 tables in the whole place. zero atmosphere, overpriced menu, average food. we ordered the bacon appetizer thinking it would be similar to Lugers or any other reputable steakhouse - WRONG. They brought out tiny pieces of Oscar Meyer breakfast bacon. Eastern European waitstaff doesn't get the customer service thing either. save your money, boycott these average spots and lets keep NY restaurants on top.

Got caught at the last minute looking for a restaurant on the West Side to take important clients, and held my breath coming here for the first time. But what a great place! Understated but sleek decor, prompt/attentive/not overbearing service, stiff drinks from the bar, and awesome steaks. Will definitely return.

I was at an event at the Garden and found Staghorn right near there so went with some friends for dinner. What a nice restaurant. The steak of course was great and the drinks were made nice and strong. Service was just as good. I would definitely suggest have dinner one night if you are in the area!!!

Any of the steaks here will do more than satisfy, but if you're in the mood for something lighter, try the Maryland crab cakes and the fresh wild grilled salmon. As expected, the lunch prices are a bit more affordable than those at…
