I thought the food was beautifully presented and for the most part very good. The restaurant is beautiful and the bus boys were very quick. HOwever, our biggest complaint was the waiter. Once he realized we were not going to order more cocktails, he did not ONCE come to the table to see if we needed anything. We had to request more fountain drinks, water and a dessert menu. It goes to show you what a huge difference the experience can be when you have good service.

Years ago, when Japonais first opened, I was so excited to go because I had been to Japonais Chicago several times and loved it. My first encounter with Japonais NYC after they opened was terrible, but I attributed it to the fact that they had just opened and obviously did not have their act together. Since that time, I have been back several times for lunch, figuring that they would be more attentive at that time since lunch time is usually slower than dinner. My experiences for lunch were better, albeit still not great and with very slow service.

Last night I returned during restaurant week with a friend who had never been. I had really hoped that the place had turned around, but judging by the nearly empty establishment at prime dinner time and during restaurant week, I gathered it hadn't changed much. Our server wasn't bad, and the bus boys kept it moving, filling our water glasses, etc. The food was good, not very plentiful, but we were not that hungry, and we had ordered off the restaurant week menu so no complaints there. By the time we ordered the check, the experience was nothing to write home about, but good and nothing to really complain about either.

Here is where the problem I have comes in: we get the check and give the server our credit cards for him to split the bill between the two. Our credit slips come back, and he had added a 20% gratuity to our bill when he ran our cards through. Let me first say that my friend and I (having both been servers and bartenders earlier in our lives) always tip 18-20% unless service is REALLY bad, so it isn't as if we wouldn't have tipped that much anyway. This was not the problem. The problem I have is with (a) doing that for a party of 2 when your menu states you will do that for a party of 6 or more (which is generally considered to be standard practice) and (b) not even putting that on the bill you bring to us, but then giving yourself the liberty to just add it on to our credit cards! What nerve! He did it to the couple at the table next to us, too, and they were just as upset even though their experience had been a decent one up until that point, too.

I am not sure if this is the restaurant's doing or the server's doing, but I really didn't appreciate it. My days of giving this restaurant the benefit of doubt are over. There are plenty of other really good restaurants (and very similar ones, too) in the city that have great service and don't try to pull a fast on one you.

Pros: food is good

We made a reservation for a group only to arrive and find they had booked another group at our table. We were forced to sit upstairs on couches with our group separated. We had one waitress for about 50 people in our area. It took forever to get a drink. We ordered food and waited a long time only to discover they forgot 5 peoples orders. The waitress was rude and the manager was not helpful. I left after being there for 2+hours STARVING with my dinner in a bag that they rushed up to us as we were walking out the door.

Pros: Convenient location

Cons: Rude, slow service with average food

The service was terribly slow, and the food was awful. Fishy fish, soggy calamari, everything drenched in too much sauce, and WAY overpriced. there are so many other choices for restaurants in this area, I'm sorry I wasted my time and money at this restaurant. I cannot believe the positive reviews on this place. If you know the difference between a good restaurant and a bad one, don't go here.

I went to Japonais to meet a date and I was a bit early so I decided to have a drink at the bar. The Asian (I'm not sure of her background but she's definitely a mix of something-very beautiful.....) female bartender was very attentive and friendly. My date came and we ended up having dinner at the bar. I was having such a great time that I didn't see the point of moving to the main dining. Everything she suggested were delicious. I especially love the tuna ceviche and beef carpaccio. The bar suddenly became so busy but she made sure that we were ok by checking on us every now and then. I would definitely go back but without a date this time.

I loved the atmosphere. It was elegant and perfect for a date night. I have had been there a couple of times for business lunches but not in the evening. Little different experience when the bill is on your tab not the companies!

I went to japonais for a dinner with my gf last saturday. it was packed.
the dining room was very well decorated and had a great ambience.
It was definetely less pretentious than other asian fusion restaurants like morimoto.
i felt very comfortable here as all the staffs were accomodating. It seems like accomodating servers are hard to find in new trendy restaurants.
I had a very comfortable and enjoyable dinner and my gf loved it all as well. It was not the best dinner i have had but it was much better than I expected and would be back frequently here for sure. highly recommended!

I have been here before at the bar upstairs and greatly enjoyed the gorgeous atmosphere that made up the entire venue. My girlfriend and I ordered off the Price Fix dinner menu and fell in love with everything. I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a nice place to enjoy a wine or for a romantic dinner in a lovely neighborhood.

As I read reviews of this place, I was reluctant on coming here but i took the chance. The atmostphere here is awesome however; I must agree that the service sucked. I waited over an hour for my entree. I dont think they care about how they treat their customers. why?? B/c i noticed 20% tip is already included in the bill. No wonder they could care less. This is just a fair warning that they add 20% gratuity automatically and the service is really bad.

Atmosphere and food is ok but service needs a lot of work. Trust me along w/ all the other negative reviews~ Not worth wasting 2 hrs of your night there just for dinner b/c its more waiting than enjoying your time there.

My boyfriend and I attempted to go here during restaurant week and it was a disaster. We waited 20 minutes in a line just to get to the hostess, all the while being pushed and shoved by others trying to get to the bar or the hostess. By the time we finally reached the podium, we were told by a very rude hostess that we would have to wait another 30 minutes for our reservation. Restaurant 101: learn how to manage your reservation slots and hire more personable staff. I have nothing to say about the food or wait staff because after all of this, we walked out. Not worth it!

Went for dinner. Place was dead until around 9:30PM. Then the place came alive. Lots of good looking people. Be prepared to spend a pretty penny.

The food is good and the atmosphere is very cool but the service is HORRIBLE. I went with 3 of my friends and we each ordered a burger. Only four of us, and the restaurant is empty- only 4 other people in the lounge area! The waitress only enters in two burgers, and doesn't tell us until she brings out the food. If it were crowded and we were a large party, maybe the mistake would have made sense, but it was not busy! So we very nicely agree to split these and she will bring out the other two later. Now at this point you would think they would send over a free drink, or tell us the burgers on the house, but no. So we split the burgers and don't want to wait for the other two, so we cancel them. She comes back and tells us that the kitchen is angry and we have to take the burgers home if we don't want to eat them now. We said no, we want to cancel them. She sends over the manager who spends ten minutes arguing with us and basically trying to force us to pay for the burgers! He told us that it was an empty restaurant and he wouldn't be able to sell them. We are talking about two $12 hamburgers here, I think such an expensive and upscale restaurant could take the loss. We explained that had we gotten our food on time, when we ordered it, we would not be having this conversation right now, and that his empty restaurant is not our fault. Finally he gave in and then our waitress brought the bill over CRYING, which is so unprofessional. We felt so bad we left her an extra big tip, even though this was all her fault, just because if the manager is so rude to customers we can't imagine how he would treat his employees.

So basically, do not go here. There are a lot of other Japanese restaurants in the city. Go to one where you will be served your food on time and treated like a customer, not one where you will have to argue with the manager for ten minutes because they are trying to make you pay for food that didn't come.

This was by far, the worst Japanese restaurant my husband and I have ever been to. When you first walk in, the decor is beautiful and the ambience seems great. Then, the hostess takes us to our table and doesn't even move the table for me to sit- I had to move it myself, while she watched me struggle. The service was horrible- they didn't even go over the menu with us or offer any recommendations. Some of the waiters are walking around like they are from the secret service with earpieces. The waiter even poured our drinks by reaching across the table- not classy at all.The food wasn't even that good and it was definitely overpriced for the quality. There are so many great Japanese restaurants in NYC, this one is not worth it.

I really enjoyed this place. The food was EXCELLENT. It was freshly prepared and well cooked. The service too, was EXCELLENT. The waiter was well informed and explained everything very well. I am not a sushi eater, but the menu had something on it for all tastes. I really loved the atmosphere.

After spending $200 on dinner with my girlfriend we decided to have a few glasses of wine at the bar. We had a nice time for 90 mins., until the bill came as the young asian girl at the bar was mad we did not tip her enough! It was certainly in the 15%-20% range and frankly all she did was pour us 3 glasses each of white wine. Not to mention once I thought about it she overcharged us by adding on a round! I have gone to this place at least 10X in the last 3 years with clients and my girlfriend and will not spend a dime in this place ever again. I was astounded that she would do that and as well steal from customers by adding on two drinks we did not have. Keep an eye on ther bar and your credit card as these guys are looking to rip people off. Bad business practice and this place is going down hill!

This is by far one of THE best new restaurants in the city. The location is great and the space is amazing. The interior is very seductive yet comfortable, and it's rare to be in a NYC restaurant that is so spacious and open. They have an outside lounge area with hardwood floors and cushioned seats along with an upstairs lounge/dining area. I LOVED the red interior. Absolutely perfect for a romantic night out or if you're in the mood for something that is truly stylish in the most "NY" sense. The food is creative and delicious. the menu is split into two sections - a sushi section and a hot entree section. So, if you're not into "Japanese food," guess what, you have an entire half of a menu (which is diverse with a LOT of choices) to choose from. The food was fresh and flavorful and very tasty. The dessert menu was also creative (thank god! none of your boring NY cheesecake and other things you see at every other restaurant) and the presentation was fun and thoughtful. The food also gets 10 stars. The service was good. The staff were friendly (but not overly friendly, they were happy to answer your questions and help you with whatever you needed) and PROMPT - a very rare combination that NYC restaurants have been desperately lacking for some time now. Did I mention prompt? You never had to wait for anything - they quietly brought your food, cleared your plates, refilled your water without being asked (an important one) and came by to check often but not enough to annoy. The staff were great. My experience here has been top top top. But, don't just take my word for it, go try it. You absolutely will fall in love with it.

We made the mistake of going to Japonais for a friend's birthday and they divided our group into two tables. One table received their food and moved on to desert before the second table even received our dinner. The waiter was never available, the appetizers we did receive were incorrect and underwhelming, it took half an hour to receive our drinks and the server couldn't have cared less about the long wait for our food. Two hours in, since our guest of honor had already finished, we complained that we still hadn't received our food, and the manager's response was "well, we won't charge you for what you didn't get"...geez, thanks! Overall, cool atmosphere, but they need to get over themselves...it's not nearly as great as they seem to think it is.

This restaurant is a nice blend of cuisines. The fusion of the restaurant spreads from the ambience to the menu. It's often empty for the lunch hour, and its easy to find a seat. The proximity to Union Square makes its a lively place night, however, so book it on opentable for sure. The fish is always fresh, with beautifully tasting rice and supreme seaweed. While it is not known to be overly traditional, the sushi is still great.

I liked the decor, the ambiance and the food was a good selection of japanese food with some standard dishes (what they call the French cuisine). It did not appear to be any real "fusion cuisine" The presentation of the food was very modern and hip. The person who greeted my party (5) was not very helpful. She looked aloof and not interested. She really wanted us to go first for drinks even though we wanted to go to the table. We had to insist to go to our table which was ready anyway. I understood why: the drinks are really pricey. We ended up paying 600 USD (tip included) for 5 people. I would go back because of the space and location but not for the service.

I've been wanting to eat here for a while and thank good I didn't listen to the negative reviews because none of them were true. The food was amazing (lobster spring rolls!) the drinks were great and our server (Ed) made the whole experience wonderful. Clearly these people writing about the poor service did not have him as their server. We were seated at exactly the time our reservation was for and could not have had a better experience. I highly recommend this place and can't wait to go back for their tasting menu (if you don't want to spend the money for dinner this is a great deal).

I took someone here from out of town for business and am sorry i did. We arrived early for the reservation but had to wait 20 minutes to be seated. The waiter brought the appetizer and entree at the same time, forgot our drink order, then brought us the wrong drinks. Another server plopped the deserts that were ordered by the table next to us and left the plates on the table. There are so many great restaurants in Union Square....don't waste your time at Japonais!!

The waiter brought the appetizer and entree at the same time, forgot our drink order, then brought us the wrong drinks. Another server plopped the deserts that were ordered by the table next to us and left the plates on the table. There are so many great restaurants in Union Square....don't waste your time at Japonais!!

.

Japonais looked like a great place but it didnt meet my expectations, especially with so many other great restaurants nearby. The food was decent and the service was subpar. The atmosphere was nice but really crowded and noisy. look elsewhere for a good date, there are a few good places farther down 18th street.

Came here on a date and had a great time. Our waitress, I think her name was Amanda, was really helpful. She offered suggestions but wasn't pushy. The food she recommended was delicious. We tried the aji tartar, crispy salmon roll, and the rib eye. All were fantastic. Really personal service made for a really fun date. I've been here a couple times before where it was just ok. This time, it was fantastic. Amanda must be one of your bests.

Took a chance during restaurant week and it was well worth it. The appetizers, lobster spring roll and crispy shrimp and salmon. Not only was the presentation almost too nice to ruin, but the food lived up to it. We did add another item to our appetizers, the Japonais cocktail (oysters) and they should have been avoided. Small unflavorful oysters that they try to cover up with the various sauces they provide. We both had the Filet and it was excellent. Cooked perfectly, and complimented well by the miso potatoes and asparagus. I was quite full at this point, but managed to give the Kabocha Cheesecake a shot and I am glad I did. Although I only ate a few bites it is something to give a shot. The sorbets were also well done, but that isn't too hard of an item to perfect.
Our server was midly attentive and took WAY too long in getting us our wine. I understand sertain things need to be at certain temperatures, but it was getting to the point where we almost walked to the bar to order drinks.
All-in-all a good experience with a solid vibe to the restaurant. Decor was awesome and worked well in union Square.

I just went to Japonais for the first time for restaurant week. The decor is lovely and the food was really good for $35. I've been to some top restaurants for restaurant week and been disappointed with the selection of food. Overall very satisfied. Think of this place as a Rosa Mexicano for Japanese food - trendy, pricey and fun.

After reading the reviews I felt I had to write that I went to Japonais for Restaurant Week and had a fabulous dinner. We had amazing service; we didn't wait long at all and would recommend this place to anyone so maybe those that wrote negative reviews went on an off night? The food was really delicious and we basically ate every last morsel.

Pros: Delicious Cuisine

Cons: Dimly lit so hard to read menu

Lovely space and good food, but both were overshadowed by the worst service ever encountered. Lunch took over an hour to get a first course, with a half empy restauant. The even messed up the food and orders.

When we complained to the manager he was rude, nasty and smug. Will never go back here....

Japonais was the restaurant we decided to have my birthday dinner at this year. It looked cool and trendy and the menu was on point, so two months in advance we made the reservation for 20 people. The lady on the phone was very helpful and offered to put us in the loung area and promised we would be able to eat dinner, order drinks and have some privacy, so we were pumped. Over the course of the two months we made 3 different alterations to the reservation which left us with a final number of 17 people. Even better we thought, now we'll be more spread out and have more room- HUH! They stuck us in a courner booth equipped for maximum 10 people to sit and eat, we were sitting on top of each other and I litteraly had to eat off my lap because their was simply no room on the table. The food was excellant, but don't expect water or for the entrees to be served together, I got mine an hour before my friend sitting next to me. Good place, but NOT FOR GROUP PART'IES- VERY DISAPPOINTED!

Wow I am surprised by the neg. reviews of late! I went here for dinner last night, and went prior to reading any of the reviews here. I am glad I did because I prob would not have gone! I thought it was excellent! Maybe we got lucky and picked the right dishes.

Anyways, ambience--very classy, nice decor, and comfortable. Great place for a date, group dinners, or business.

Service--was wonderful. Our waiter was very attentive but not overbearing at all. They cleared our dishes/filled our water etc. appropriately without fuss.

Food--we had the spicy baked king crab roll which was AMAZING. sooo flavorful. We also had the buns (i dont recall what it was called) which has braised pork in it. also very good. for entrees we had the duck which was excellent (it is kinda like peking duck, and was the best I've had in a while) as well as the filet mignon which was also done nicely. overall we thoroughly enjoyed the meal and i would def go back! price wise, entrees range from 20-40, which i thought was on par for other nice places. they have a lunch menu, which serves similar things, and is cheaper prob due to less portion size.

there is also a bar scene in the front, would prob come by to try it.

Went for Lunch, the food and service were excellent. We went to this restaurant because of Rachel Ray saying it was good, and it was. The Crispy shrimp and salmon roll and the ?Le Quack Japonais? were very yummy.

I am a bartender in the city and I cannot believe that they charge so much for all of that juice in their drinks. On top of the fact that the bartenders at Japonais do not know guest servicde, conversation or how to make a drink properly, the price tops it off. Where did they find these people. There are many great bars in NYC, but this is definitely not the place to go. Management must be very weak. Hostess seems to have an attitude towards questions and definitely does not smile or speak to guests......I have been to the Chicago location, but this one takes the cake. Did they send the wrong staff to this location?

I cannot believe I actually went there when all of my friends told me not to go. The service and the food were uncalled for.

Jeffrey Beers did a great job and these people had to screw it up. where the hell are they from, LA. Please someone teach them...I got better service at a taco stand in el paso.

long live great dinner but not here....

I get there 15 minutes early for my reservation and yet still had to wait almost 45 minutes to get seated. i asked for a manager to come to the table and yet no one came. I have dined in many fine restaurants in New York but this takes the cake. Somehow the hostess and the man next to her at the host stand do not communicate. The food is over rated and some dishes are way over priced. They could use someone who knows service. Union Square Cafe should give them lessons on customer service. I will never go there again. Way too much attitude....They care more about their cell phones than they do the guests. THERE ARE SO MANY OTHER PLACES THAT YOU SHOULD SPEND YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY.

I really enjoyed my dinning experience at Japonais even though only half of the food we ordered was good. It is definitely a high design and high class place. I thought the service was extremely good. The service and ambiance made the whole experience truly enjoyable. Now the food ... we had flat bread appetizer which was good. The rolls I thought was completely Americanized. Yes, fusion, but the rolls can be at least be made with sushi rice right? The seafood casserole was very disappointing with one shrimp, one scallop, one clam, etc. Not only was it very sparse, it was tasteless. The duck entree which turned out to be peaking duck was really good. An interesting and enjoyable twist on the Chinese classic. Don't bother with the wine. They were all WAY overpriced. We ended up paying $50 for a $8 bottle of wine.

I havent been there in a bit but i went 3 times since it opened and had the exact opposite experience of all the bad reviews. the wagyu ravioli is sublime and the entree was presented with exquisite preciseness. the decor is great but i can imagine why the service may have sucked for some. the management there is a bit top heavy from what i heard and the servers arent compensated well. (i heard from some staff members) i heard the group is from chicago and they probably havent conformed to NYC standards yet.

unfortunate for some but this place is worth checking out as they have some innovative twists on fusion dishes so please dont order the california roll and spicy tuna as usual. Be specific about what you want since the staff may not know too well themselves. Its a shame that a great concept just could not work better in such a nice looking place.

Trendy and smart decor but the terrible service does not make up for the atmosphere. The wait staff is inexperienced. We asked for water from three staff and never received it. The food is good but overpriced for what is good New York sushi. We also had to wait 15 minutes for the waiter to bring back the credit card and check. Many many more place to get good / trendy sushi in New York... Try Haru across the street.

The first thing you notice about Japonais is the decor - it has a beautiful, trendy ambiance that is good for a date or a girls' night out and the like. My date and I opted to do tapas-type dining and ordered several appetizers to share... A review of a couple: "The rock" was delicious - and grilling your own meat to your liking on a hot stone was a novel experience! We ordered the oysters, very fresh - and they provide three sauces for them. The carpaccio was very good as well - the sauce was yum. Japonais' cocktails are unique and, for the most part, delicious. For dessert, we ordered homemade sorbet with watermelon soup - portions were pretty small (though we were so full from dinner that we didn't really mind)... sorbet was good, but nothing out of the ordinary... the watermelon "soup" tasted like plain watermelon juice. The only negative part of our dinner was that the service lagged halfway through the meal - we couldn't flag our waiter down for more water or another round of drinks... a little frustrating. He did seem to be busy with other tables at times... but as it got later in the night, we'd see him folding napkins to set up empty tables... The thing that irked us more was that the other waiters wouldn't come over to the table even though they saw us trying to get their attention - and they were just standing around chatting with each other! When we did catch our waiter's attention (finally!) though, he was very nice promptly filled our glasses and provided us with a dessert menu, etc etc. One other minor blip was that they forgot one of the dishes we ordered, but like mentioned before, we were full so it didn't really, really matter and it wasn't charged on our bill either.

Cons: Lagging service halfway through the meal

I have been to Japonais for dinner twice. I live in Manhattan and I eat out every night. I have no problem with expensive meals. But I always feel ripped off when I eat at Japonais. Maybe it's the waiters, who have been trained to annoyingly badger you to order more drinks. or it's the $20 glass of Sake. Or the fact that my friend asked for a piece of bread with his Tuna Tartare, and he was changed $2 for it. Japonais would be a great restaurant if the prices were 40% cheaper. At the present prices, it is just a rip off!

I visited Japonais on a Friday night with a group of four friends and it was fabulous. If you're looking for a vibey, buzzy beautiful location to dine I'd really reccommend it. Also would be really good for a date location (if you like the person as its not exactly Wendy's) as the surrounds are very ONO-esque and the interiors are saucy to say the least (lots of low level lighting, reds and golds etc) Food was great, try the Lobster Spring Rolls as a starter as they're great! Vist or be sorry!

My girlfirend has been raving about this place so I had to try it. It was a perfect way to start out a Saturday night. Great vibe in the upstairs lounge they played great techno music. The martinis were excellent and so was the food. I really ejoyed the Alaskan Crab rolls. The staff was wondeful the hostess sent over two Martinis on the house. I would definitely return.

My best friend and I went here on a Thursday evening for drinks and apps. We both had mojitos which were absolutely delicious. We had some maki rolls and the tuna flatbread- which was delicious. The sushi is just sub-par, I did not find it tasty and the rice did not taste authentic. The lounge upstairs boasts a delightful evening. The orange lighting on the walls combined with deep reds started to hurt my eyes after awhile. I would probably go back there for drinks.

Japonais was my go-to spot for girl dinners -- I loved getting a table in the upstairs lounge for cocktails and the delicious chef's sushi rolls -- UNTIL my last visit... The food made our entire group of four violently ill. So upsetting. When I shared our experience with another friend, she said she'd gotten sick after her last Japonais meal as well. Definitely time to freshen up that sushi bar...

ended up waiting at the bar although we had a reservation. the bartender recommended edamame that had no flavors and was way too hot when served that almost burned my hand. thanks for warning us. ordered Gimlet and Manhattan, $12 each, ... that was a total B.S. didn't even look right. so ordered beer instead. i was about to reflesh my mouth and noticed the glass was not even clean. I wouldn't say much if it was a sports bar near by my house.

Finally, got seated and started ordering. i thought "Kana Nigiri" was pretty good, but took so long. waited over 20 minutes for such a small piece. my friend got "Robata... somthing"(sorry can't remember the name) which comes with 2 tiny skewered stakes. it wasn't tender at all and cost $26. definitely not worth. Whatelse.. "Rocks" (the stake cooked on hot stones) got a nice presentation, but I've seen that before at some local Japanese places....

Overall:
Food = Average (Nothing Special) / Over Priced / Long Waiting Time
Drink = Below Avelage / Inexperienced Bartender
Decor = Good

I'LL PASS NEXT TIME.

I sat with friends in the lounge and ordered almost everything on the hot/cold app menu because we kept hoping they'd get something right! The sushi rice was dry and crumbly... The chicken was fatty... The crab app was overcooked... The madai was flaky and flavorless... The edamame was no better than the take-out place around the corner from where I live. What's the deal??? Aside from the beautiful decor, I just don't understand how this restaurant can make it in this city. There are so many other places to choose from. Keep walking east or west...
