St. Marks is certainly on the rise! Je'bon restaurant is the Jewel of St. Marks Place. With dining rooms on two levels, the restaurant has a spacious and open feel. Diners can sit at butcher-block tables and benches or at an L-shaped counter that wraps around the completely open kitchen and watch as distinguished head chef Mr. Ko Lo created amazing Pan-Asian cuisine - from Japanese to Chinese and Thai. Expect amazing Sushi, great noodles and specialty dishes like "Je'bon" and "Kichinabe", whether it's to eat in, take out or delivery! Additionally, every Wednesday night there is live belly dancers that will dance and instruct accompanied by live musicians. Come experience the meshing cultures while you enjoy great food and drinks - like sake cocktails! Come to Je'Bon, you won't want to leave. ***Please note we are no longer a BYOB establishment!***

The Scene
This two-story noodle house ramps up St. Mark's booming cheap-Asian-eats scene. True to the block's eclectic heritage, its large interior recalls a design store sample sale. Just past the juice bar, with blenders working overtime, the main dining room balances earthy notes like dark latticework and a door made from a lacquered tree slab with more modern touches like neon lights and a glass-enclosed kitchen surrounded by bar-style seating.

The Food
Some surprises reside on the pan-Asian menu. An entire meal could be made with the offbeat appetizers: Try crispy ribs coated with bits of roasted garlic, Japanese dumplings shaped like bookmarks, or smoky grilled mackerel skewers. Entrees are anything but ordinary. Slug-shaped noodles raise eyebrows in the Silver Needle dish, sticky rice wrapped in a lotus leaf soaks up the homey sausage and mushroom flavor of its wrap-mates, and noodles made from fish vitalize an otherwise placid house soup.

Key Points

  • Renowned Noodle House!
  • Now Serving Beer, Wine,Sake!
  • Live Music and Shows

The Inside Scoop

  1. What to Drink - Now that it has its liquor license, Je'Bon offers a variety of sake cocktails.

Terrible Service & Staff

by CustomerNYC

You be the judge here...I went to this spot for my lunch hour with my bf. We sat down placed our orders, the waitress brought over the soup and soda that comes with the meal. About 5-10 minutes later, the waitress brings out my bf's dish and walks away. About 20 minutes go by, he is now done with his meal, and another waitress comes over and asks if we need something to which we respond "yes, my order". Our waitress then comes over to our table and says the kitchen "forgot" to make it, do I want to wait for it? At this point, my lunch hour is over. Not once did the managaer of the restaurant come over, apologize for any inconvenience and suggest a solution or even a complementary dish. Instead, I left the restaurant hungry. How does that happen? Their wait staff is poorly trained as well as their manager. I have never been to a restaurant, especially in New York City, where a manager doesn't make up for a mistake his staff made. Any respectable restaurant will tell you this type of service is disgraceful. I wouldn't recommend anyone dine here. Not only is the service poor, the food isn't that great (I have eaten here before), and in the end you will only be waisting your time. The kitchen staff may "forget" an order...

Pros: Nice table

Cons: Staff

Not worth it

by fsu32173

I read the last 2 reviewers and thought I'd give it a try. Big mistake. I shouldn't have expected anything good where japanese, thai and other cuisines are made by a sole national. The thai food wasn't really thai ingredients. The chinese food was fine, because it was made by Chinese people. Anyway, it was all around disappointing. The price wasn't even that cheap. Just average.
Anyway, not planning to go back.

Pros: Decor, nice service

Cons: Bad food

Re visit

by AmyChan3

Last time i ate there was almost 9 months ago. Nothing was special about that visit. I went back with 2 friends last Friday and noticed immediately they have added sushi. First I thought this is just another sushi shop but after we tried their volcano roll and dragon roll, I changed my opinion. They were amazingly good. My other friend who doesn't eat sushi tried their Tender Rib Soup Ramen which she enjoyed very much too. We also tried some sake slush at a bargain happy hour price which turned out to be good too. Overalll speaking they have improved alot.

where's the hot hostess?

by garick84

i came here two years ago on a business trip, thought the food was OK and service was less than ideal, but the one plus the place has got going is the pretty girl greeting everyone at the door. Asian, beautiful long hair, just gorgeous. She even served me my food, since the waitress was slow. i went back last night and she was not there anymore. if anyone remember a beautiful asian girl working there about 2 years ago, lemme know too. cos without her my food was much less than average. i am not exaggerating either.

Pros: ok food for ok price

Cons: hostess gone

Fish Noodles!

by jocyfoodlover

Went to try out Je'Bon based on reviews listed here... and I have to agree with the previous food critics here.

I got the Je'Bon noodles - which has fresh fish noodles. It was delicious. The broth was light and flavorful.

My friends got skewers and a seafood hotpot which were both pretty good. The seafood hotpot was a bit greasy on the bottom of the dish, but it wasn't overwhelming or anything. Both also had wonderful flavors.

The staff was trying to be very attentive, but maybe too attentive for our preferences. They came by to try to take our plates twice, but we weren't finished our food yet, so we let them know. It was no big deal to us, but may cause a problem for others. I'd rather half a waitstaff that's too attentive than not attentive at all.

From the front of the restaurant, you don't realize that there's a huge space in the back of the restaurant. I like it because I don't feel like I'm being cramped into a small tight space (as compared to other restaurants on St. Marks).

I would definitely come back for the good food!

Pros: Spacious Seating, Good Food

Cons: Service

Terrible service, couldn't tell you about the food...it never came.

by lizteich

I was pretty excited to try this place, despite its poor choice of blasting techno music. My boyfriend got his appetizer and meal (while I sat there watching him eat) about 20 minutes before the waitress finally came over and asked, "Are you missing something?" I replied, "Yes, MY MEAL." She walked away. Still no food for me. After another 10 minutes, I called her over and she told me the chefs were "busy." All I ordered was a spicy tuna roll and a salmon roll...nothing crazy. I asked for the check and she didn't even take anything off the bill, let alone apologize.

Pros: Apparently good noodles...if they come.

Cons: Service, Ambience

i've been here a couple times for lazy sunday lunches and i've always enjoyed the food. it's reasonably priced,
tasty, and the owner is friendly and nice. it's been empty every time i've been there, but it might be more crowded during evenings.

Pros: good food, friendly owner, not crowded during sunday lunch

Cons: no liquor license, ambience not the nicest

Great for large crowds. Good food!

by lunaposas

If you want yummy, cheap food, go to Je'Bon. They have an inexpensive menu with most pan-asian staples. My friends and I tried their beef fried rice ( tender, flavorful), pad thai (NOT dry! steaming hot!), crab meat stick (grilled, tempura-like crab roll wth great house seasoning) salmon roll (light and tasty, not too fishy), skewers (well-seasoned, hearty portions). The staff is extremely friendly. Got the entire lower level for about fifteen of my friends. Owner was great! He provided our own waiter. I'd suggest that you negotiate a different menu for the buffet style dinner for a private party. BYOB! Great location in the middle of the whole St. Marks's scene. You can go to the slew of bars nearby! IRT close. Plan to go again with my friend!

Pros: Cheap menu. Good Food. Excellent Service

Great Hong Kong Style Noodles

by timid525

I am a lover of Hong Kong style noodles. These are as good as authentic shops in Chinatown and Flushing. The advantage Je Bon has is its great location, atmosphere, and friendly service and owners. I have yet to try the rest of their menu, and I don't think I will until I get completely bored of the hong kong noodles... but I certainly am looking forward to it!

Decent Decor but food wasn't all that appetizing. Pad Thai too salty for my taste. Appetizers were not that great either

Edible but nothing special

by vron1178

Given the number of great eats in the area vying for diners, I honestly cannot see this place surviving for more than another few months. I grew up eating Chinese food, and the noodle broths that Je'Bon offers are certainly nothing special -- if anything, the broths are quite bland. However, the noodles themselves have pretty good texture (al dente). The appetizers are tasty, if a bit overpriced ($4 for three steamed pork buns). The servers are nice, but very slow and inefficient. The concept of Je'Bon has great potential, but is not executed properly here.

Pros: Always seats available, clean, entrees are a decent value

Cons: Bland, appetizers overpriced, slow service

Underated

by tigrlily51

The two times I've been here on Saturday nights, it hasn't been crowded at all. This place is very underappreciated. The interior is clean and warm and makes a good place for conversation with friends. Food is delicious, especially the noodle soups(would recommend the wine chicken) and the Kichinabe. I had a cocktail with lychee in it and that was wonderful too.

The waiters were very friendly on both occasions I was there, and they were happy to explain dishses and offer reommendations. No wait, reasonable prices, good food. Would definitely go again some time.

Great Date Place

by moonlitaria

2 things you must try if it is your first time: Thier signature Je'Bon noodle soup and their salmon rolls. The noodles are infused with a fish and the fish broth was very tasty as well (and I'm not a fishy broth kind of guy). The salmon roll was amazing... indescribable. Good decor and prompt seating.

Pros: Great food, Great Ambience, Great Service

Cons: Doesn't have a liqour lisence yet

Will not visit again

by xdoll

I was so hungry this night, and jumped into this nice looking restaurant. It decorated in an American style, dim light, romatic feel. However, I don't think it is worth the money eating Asian food in this place. The ice smoothies are so sweet that make you wonder how much sugar they put in. On the other hand, the soup was so clear and you taste no salt. The noodles are ok, but the food presentation is no good. I don't think I will ever go back to this place.

Pros: Deco

Cons: Food

New Hot Spot

by grubs

Met some friends for dinner last night and we went to Je'Bon under other friends' recommendation; what an awesome recommendation it was.

We had a bunch of scallop, beef, pork, chicken skewers, salmon rolls and kichinabe. It's safe to say that Je'Bon has a most mouth-watering menu; everything sounds so deliciously edible.

I decided on trying the Je'Bon noodle soup for the main entree. The noodles are absolutely nothing like what I've ever had before, and I'm quite the food connoisseur. The noodles seem to have some fish infused in them, and nicely flavored.

I'm definitely going back to Je'Bon with more friends. I don't remember the last time I've gone to a restaurant and enjoying ALL of the dishes that I ordered. Oh, did I mention they have a very interesting décor and helpful waitstaff?

Je'Bon is a definite upcoming hot spot in NYC.

Pros: Affordable, Great waitstaff, Great decor

Cons: No liquor license yet

completely forgettable

by anjumarypaul

Strange decor, coupled with dishes that seem slopped together with no thought for presentation or subtlety, gave me an experience that I am not looking forward to repeating any time soon. Yes, definitely cheap with most entrees at $8-12, but either bland or strange tasting. The coconut milk sauce we had with one noodle soup was on the bland side - I had expected something like a laksa but nowhere close. And the braised pork noodle had a strange taste like it wasn't quite like anything I'd ever eaten before, and I don't mean that in a good way! The orange and blue lighting were just tacky as well.

AWESOME Pork Tender Noodle Soup

by sty203

I have already went a couple times since it first open. I am just suprised by all the dish are unique and tasty. Kachinabe is a great first dish, the skewer is awesome, Poker/Chicken/Mackeral Skwers are all worth a try. Aberdine fried noodle really give a taste of HK fried noodle. But most of all, the Pork Tender Noodle is just the best, the broth is so well made and get me drooling every time i thought of it.
It is hard to get around such Asian/Chinese restaurant in NYC with such quality and decor.

I ate at this noodle shop around beginning of March. I believe they just opened then. Food and service was somewhat OK. This past Tuesday night I went back with 2 freinds and we were suprised. They had an expanded menu with some items I really enjoyed. The seaweed salad was my favorite. I tried the JeBon Hot Broth Noodle wihich they claimed is "First in New York" and it turned out to be a winner too. I also noticed they had added a line of Bubble Tea. My friends liked them very much.

Pros: inexpensive

Cons: no parking

Best Noodle House in Town

by sugarcat

We went to Je'bon on the recommendation of one of my best friends and we had a wonderful dinner overthere. I love noodles and I can say that I can't find any better noodle house than Je'bon, special mentions are the siu long bao, satay beef noodle and the hot and spicy Tung Yum noodle soup, those are my favorite dishes! Great food, cool decor and the service is flawless.
I live in Long Island and it takes me about 45 minutes to get to the city, but I think it is worth the trip and I can recommend Je'bon to anyone for any occasion.

Great Soup Base & Skewers

by newyork1250

I go to St.Mark's a lot, usually for Japanese food. I checked out this new restaurant the other night. Being an Asian, i've always missed the soups that we spent hours and hours to prepare at home. Unfortunately, I can't find any good asian soup place in nyc, not even in Chinatown. So when I had the Braised oxtail noodle soup, I really feel back home. The soup has all the delightful taste of the oxtail and other ingredients.

Recommended appetizer: ALL SKEWERS (they actually taste better than that of Yakitori, maybe because the meat is less burnt and being marinated longer so its more tasty). They have a special dumpings dish worth trying. Like those Cantonese dim sum thing.

Recommended dishes: Oxtail noodle soup, my friend said their satay beef noodle, wine chicken, and tender pork noodle were excellent also.

Pros: Authentic asian food, Not very crowded yet, fast service

Cons: A little pricey, no alcohol

I was with my friends on last friday and see a new restaurant in St Marks. I think they are coping Republic but the food is much better and special the Jebon noodle. It was fresh fish noodle, just like the iron chef in food channel. The noodle broth is very tasteful. We are going back again on this Firday.

Pros: good food, good value

Cons: no parking space

Asian Food Served in Fashion

by bxbeall

Upon walking through the large stainless steel glass doors, I quickly became enveloped in the restaurant's young club like atmoshpere. The tinted brick walls had orange light panels glowing across and looking far back from my seat, an extremely well designed yet exotic art piece. After watching the dishes be distributed, I noticed each had a unique decorative scent and seemed as if the cooks pampered them to perfection in aroma as well as to the eye. The fish broth had every aspect of Asian Spiced noodles and a little more than just spice.

Highly Recommanded

by ebcusa

I usually don't write review but read. I went to St. Marks last night with my friends for dinner. We wanted to go to Taisho orginally..but wind up Jebon coz it looked fancy from outside, so we gave it a shot. Can't believe that inside of jebon is spaciuos and hip. Their open-kitchen looked neat n clean. We started off with bunch of small eats (appetizer). Wow, the skewers over there are so delicious... i can say they beat Taisho a big time. Rest of the appetizers were great too, like the japanese special fried dumpling and siu long bun. Too bad we kept on reordering the appetizer...thus our stomach were full n can't move on to the noodle part. Jebon, we will definitely go back to try out your noodles.

Pros: food, spacious, price
