I enjoyed my lunch at Bar Pitti, which was not, like other reviews have said, rushed or made uncomfortable by pushy waiters. The waitress serving our table was a gem, who patiently explained all of the dishes and made great recommendations. I like that they have a small permanent menu and then a much more expansive daily specials menu. We ate a bunch of appetizers (highlight: oyster mushrooms, earthy, hearty and rich), and shared some entrees (highlight: veal, pounded super thin and served with lemon and arugula), and had desserts (highlight: my favorite panna cotta ever, so smooth, rich, decadent and the perfect texture), and coffees. The place is cash only, so we felt a little weird paying in a giant stack of 20s, but it is what it is. I really liked this place and hope to come back soon.

Not worth the headache. The food was so so, the service was TERRIBLE. It's honestly a place that you would go to if you didn't know any better. Save yourself the trouble, spend a little more money and go to a place that doesn't rush you out and tell you you're not allowed to order an appetizer while you wait for your party to arrive. They treat their customers like sh*t. It's about as authentic as Olive Garden. NEVER AGAIN!

Attempted to dine here on a beautiful Friday evening. Bad idea. Been here before years ago and gave it another shot since my date suggested it tonight. (The food I had last was not memorable) I would not go back again since while I walked into the door to find a host, 2 rude male servers deliberately pushed me coming from Literally, pushed against my back. So I rushed out. This place was chaotic. A bunch of people milling around on the sidewalk waiting to be seated. Definitely not worth it. We just left and went to 10 Downing across the street. Delicious food, excellent attentive service for a beautiful night on the sidewalk. Bar Pitti is definitely over-rated.

If you have claustrophobia or suffer from anxiety, this place is not for you. The space is small, the line is typically out the door and the staff is uh, brusque to say the least.

With that said, this is some of the best pasta you will find in NYC. My personal favorites are the Linguine a la Vongole and the Rigatoni Pitti but everything on the menu is fresh and delicious. Great place to bring out of town guests without breaking the bank. Be sure to bring cash as they do not accept credit cards.

Pros: Food so good conversation comes to a halt

Cons: Crowded, no reservations

The owner thinks he is "cosa nostra" untouchable gangster type. They will rush you out and take wine out of your hand. Food is overrated but the ambiance is nice if you like the owner starng you down to order.. Waitress and waiters stink. owner is crass and and forgets what it is like to struggle. horrendous experience but they do not care because it will always be packed. I saw a vermon run under my feet as I ate a meatball.

Hadn't been in a while, thought I'd go back. Wish I hadn't. The food was kinda ok, the meal was very rushed and not long after paying our bill, the waiter grabbed his 20% tip and asked "everything ok over here guys?" I responded, "yes, thank you" to which he said (with attitude) "people are waiting." There were 4 people waiting and the restaurant was not packed. As we walked out, I told the owner "we were 2 sips away from done, I didn't need to be told to leave" and he mocked me for the beneift of the people waiting for our table. So, if you want to drop over $100 (cash only) and not be allowed to finish your wine, jump in!

This restaurant--with its see-and-be-seen sidewalk seating adjacent to Da Silvano-- has a wonderful Tuscan menu that includes antipasti, quick-fry pasta, veal meatballs, etc. The food is very good--although it's Da Silvano neighbor gets all the press. Check it out!

The outdoor cafe was a nice amenity. The wait staff are a bit harried, and the maitre'd was unhelpful about how long the wait would be, since they do not take reservations.

But their 'peasant' dishes were delicious, a lot better than most 'red sauce' restaurants.

I have been to this restaurant before as a college student and again several years ago and never had a complaint, but my husband and I went this past weekend and I was unpleasantly surprised. I have never written a review like this before, but I was sufficiently offended by the poor service and the staff's utter lack of interest in the comfort of their clients that I felt obligated to write something! First we had to ask to be seated by catching a waiter flying by us while standing in the walkway, then we had to wait 15 min before we were able to catch our waitress for the menus and some beverages. We had to request the specials since they were not offered to us and once we were ready to order we had to flag down another waiter. No refills on water unless prompted and to that the waiter seemed annoyed. No one asked how we were doing at all. We, of course, had to ask for the check. And to top it off, they take cash only and, yes it is mentioned on the menu, but it would also be nice if someone reminds you when you are seated. Food was good and I am Italian so i am a harsh critic of a red sauce. Prices are very reasonable for the city. Overall, very unsatisfied.

tried this place while back and thought i'd give it a second chance. not much has changed so i don't see why the place is always packed. the service is mediocre at best. the food is average and the prices are not extreme but everything could be improved upon. i guess it stays around because people are out to catch the next celebrity who is caught dining here or next door. if you want sceney then the place is okay but for food and service go elsewhere.

Good food but the service was rude. If Jay-Z and Beyonce sit next to you, be prepared to be asked to leave, even if you have just ordered a bottle of wine.

I went to Bar Pitti on a recent Sunday night for a friend's birthday dinner (her choice). I was definitely hesitant to go after having read a lot of unsatisfied customer reviews, and even suggested to my friend that she might want to try somewhere else instead, but she insisted that she goes all the time and never has a problem. The impression from when I first arrived wasn't a good one. As I looked around to see if anyone else from my party had arrived I got no greeting at all. From anyone. Shortly after, my friend showed up and it turned out that another friend of hers that I hadn't met before was also waiting and had put her name down on the waiting list. Luckily for us, an outdoor table become free and we were sat immediately.

Our waiter was in a rush to get the ball rolling, so we leaped upon a wine bottle choice that not everyone ended up being that into. We were brought the specials board and our waiter quickly went down the list in his thick Italian accent. I felt intimidated to ask too many questions, so I only asked about the special that looked appealing to me. At least he left the board there for a while except that it was in Italian, which none of us know.

We made our order and were happy with our choices and the portions. Our waiter felt the need to amuse himself and try to embarrass us by making of pronounce what we ordered, but we didn't mind, because we all have a sense of humor too. I had an octopus salad (it came sans greens), and my friends had some delicious rigatoni in a vodka sauce. Didn't feel rushed during the meal. My friend said the arrogant attitude of the staff of the restaurant is probably intentional and part of their "schtick," and I agreed, although generally my favorite type of service is non-obtrusive, witty and pleasant.

We tried to order two desserts (there were four of us), but the waiter insisted that we get three and brought three out. He put a candle on one, but didn't join us in singing "happy birthday."

Bar Pitti should be ashamed. A dining experience is as much about the atmosphere and service as it is about the food. I have been to this restaurant many times before. On this occasion, I brought a friend, who was visiting me from 3,000 miles away. The night ended when the manager asked us not to be offended by his utterly shameful query but "How can we be so rude as to stay for a nearly three hour meal while others are waiting for the table?" We paid our bill and quietly pulled him aside to let him know we were offended and hurt -- and, quite honestly, astonished that we would be pushed out of a restaurant where we just paid good money to eat. He shoved our money back in our pockets saying, "It's not about the money, it's about respect" and demanded we leave immediately. Needless to say, I returned the money. It wasn't about the money for me either. It was about respect. It is shameful that the manager of a business as big as a NYC hot spot feels at liberty to treat his customers with such disregard. I encourage all foodies and professionals like myself to declare Bar Pitti absolutely pitiful.

Starting off with all things positive, which was singluar: the outside seating...always a plus anywhere, especially NY. Moving onward to all things negative, which was laughingly plural. Service was almost akin to cloned , as all servers, including the manager, rushed everything, especially our glasses of wine at the end almost swooped out of our hands. Additionally, their false nobility of condescension while translating the menu and giggling...the stuff of kindergartners. The food you ask: definitive mediocrity. I had the papardelle duck and my girlfriend had the pasta carbonara, and sad to say it, but nothing memorable came of the night other than our fun in imitating our servers pitti-ful attitudes.

Went there last night and they rushed me and my friends out of the restaurant. They continually asked us while we were eating whether we were done and then asked us to leave at the end when we were enjoying our wine. The food is mediocre at best.

I've always found the food at pitti to be decidedly average, but have enjoyed the ambiance all the same. Last night put an end to all that. We had a 9 pm reservation, but were told we would have to wait upon our arrival because apparently everyone standing around had a reservation. When I asked if it would be okay for us to repair to the bar next door and get a call when they're ready, the host/waiter actually laughed in my face. "It's your choice if you want to go, but we're not going to call you," he said sounding a lot like he thought he was working at Dorsia. I have rarely seen someone take such obvious sadistic pleasure in disappointing a customer. When I asked why they couldn't just call (after all, they had my number on the reservation log and i would have called them if i'd had to cancel), he just walked away from me. Excuse me? Who does that? Given the cramped space, the total lack of a bar area, the common restaurant industry practice of calling people put on a waiting list, and the fact that I had kept up my end of the whole reservation agreement while they were the ones in breach, I thought the request was reasonable. My friends watched the exchange in total shock, insisting that we not patronize any place that would treat us so rudely. So we went next door to Da Silvano - we were worried they'd be full given how much more popular they are than pitti, but agreed we'd rather wait an hour at Da Silvano than 5 minutes at that other place. Luckily, this story has a happy ending: We got seated right away and were even given a wonderful cheese and charcuterie appetizer on the house. And the lively atmosphere at Da Silvano was far better than what we observed at the overly lit and strangely lifeless pitti. I'll definitely be coming back to Da Silvano...

Ok, the food is good and the people watching, great. That can be said for most restaurants around
Washington Park. The Bar Pritti menu is routine and the rude - to-be - chic theater is old. It seems others we spoke to recently have had inconsistent meals, too. Have to say, we would recommend going elsewhere.

i love bar pitti. yes, the space is small and you might have to wait for a long time (especially on a weekend evening, or in the summer when people go crazy for the outdoor seating) but if you're in the mood for simple pasta made right, it's perfect. i have NEVER never ever felt rushed to order. it's true that the waiters are not overally attentive, and there have been times when i've had to hunt someone down to refill my water glass, but really, that's my only complaint. and let's be honest, it's not a fine dining establishment--it's just tasty food served in what i think is a fun and relaxed environment. try it.

From everything I had read and heard about Batalli's Bar Pitti, I may have set my expectations a little too high, and they were nowhere near met. We had a 10:15 reservation on Sunday, so, granted, the restaurant was nowhere near on its "A game," but I have never felt so rushed by the staff at a restaurant in my life. Nearly every person working in the restaurant pressured us to order, and when we finally picked a wine, we were informed that the only moderately-priced red they had was a chianti; they were out of our first three choices. So, since I wasn't dining with any members of the Mob, we were less than excited about our beverage. I choked down what tasted like communion wine, and then my special pasta with broccoli rabe and sausage came. My dish barely had sauce on it, and I could've have had better broccoli rabe and sausage from Sbarro -- both were completely overcooked. My friend's rabbit and penne in a red cream sauce was comparatively better, but another friend's gnocci was rubbery. The staff converged on us once again to take our plates the second we put down the fork, but, at this point, we were glad they did. If you're looking for an Italian restaurant in that area, go to Bellavitae (about 500 feet away on Minetta) instead. Avoid Bar Pitti like the plague!

The 3 of us decided on dinner here after our friend who owns a local bookstore in the neighborhood recommended it. since it was about 6:30 we were able to be seated right away before it got too busy, and got busy it did. After getting our menus, I was happy w/ the selection and knew what I wanted but shortly after, the waiter brought over a chalkboard filled w/ the daily specials and everything looked so good I was back to my usual indecisive self. We finally decided on: fresh mozzarella & cherry tomatoes appetizer, chicken liver pate on country bread (they loaded it on), and the grilled country bread with prosciutto, garlic, and olive oil (my bf said it was really good). For entrees we got: the Rigatoni Pitti with peas, turkey sausage and a bit of cream (I'm already craving it), the veal Milanese on the specials board (didn't come w/ any pasta but a bunch of greens on top which was fine, there was also plenty of it. very tasty), and a salmon dish which I don't remember.

I have read other reviews where people have said the staff was rude and rush you but we didn't get that vibe, even w/ the crowd of people waiting for seats as we were finishing out meal. I'll be back to try the veal meatballs and penne arrabiata everyone is raving about. Lastly, this place is cash only.

Pros: food

Cons: cash only

.

Excellent food. Despite the small place, long lines from 7:00 to 8:30 PM, and a short wine list, Pitti is without any doubt one of (if not THE) best place to dine real Italian food in NYC.
Fresh truffles, wonderful seafood and home made pasta. Try the pasta al tartufo nero.

I've been to Bar Pitti once, and though I liked the ambience & the food, I think the prices are too steep for what you get. I tried the roasted chicken breast, and it was on the better side but certainly not worth the price. Overall, i wouldn't go back.

I have been a fan of this place since my friend discovered it a few years ago. Yes, it can get a little bit slammed (especially during the summer on the patio) and they do want you in and out fairly quickly. However, when it is a little bit earlier in the evening, it is such a pleasure to eat there. Wait staff is always professional and congenial, I've never had a rude server, so I am not sure what everyone is talking about with the lack of courteous servers. I am always asked what kind of water I'd like, if I'd like wine, etc. Pasta is to die for, homemade and just the right portion, not a gargantuan portion that could serve a family of 4! My favorite is the paparadelle, and the veal meatballs are the best! Don't skip the tiramisu either. I am leaving NY for good in a few days and I'll miss this place a lot! :)

I live in the West Village and had wanted to stop by Bar Pitti for a while now. What a disappointment!! The menu was extremely average (four pasta dishes and paninis) and the service was not bad, it was awful. The waiters are so full of themselves that they are "TOO COOL" to serve and just be normal! Funny enough, none of them was handsome (at all!).

Pros: The location (mostly in summer)

Cons: The service = the most arrogant waiters in Manhattan

Italian food delicious. Always consistent whether busy or quiet. Never have been disappointed and a true gem.

Addiction Alert: the Rigatoni Pitti is c-r-a-c-k in pasta form - do yourself a favor, don't get started! However, the irresistibility becomes dubious when taking into consideration that MSG is used in most of Bar Pitti's dishes (google Knorr Bouillon Cubes and stand back). So, in effect, they are cheating. And they are messing with your wellbeing while at it ... beware!

What really sends Bar Pitti over the edge and into the gutter is the inexplicable attitude from its long-faced host. And I say 'host' as in short for 'hostile'. He is going to have to take some anger management in order to qualify for Maitre D'.

Bar Pitti, it's such a pity; without the toxins, chemical and social, this place could could fare well instead of having to say farewell.

I know it sounds crazy but my husband and I always go here after a big night of drinking and eat the penne arrabiata. He gets it with veal meatballs and I just pile on the parmesan cheese. It's spicy and delicious. We always feel 100% cured of our hang overs after the meal. Great food!!

foodwise i cannot complain because i never actually was able to eat. they did not let me read the menu because apparently their policy is read and eat and leave. not only was the waitor rude and unaccomadating but the manager as well. if i am in that much of a rush i will go to burger king where i will get better service for my money. honestly the worst experience i have had.

Pros: none

Cons: the staff, attitude, the restaurant in general

.

you must sit and look at the menu immediately otherwise leave. i asked if i could have a minute to look at the menu and the waiter told me NO as did the manager. they do not explain any of their specials which are in italian. i dont care what celebrities have been seen here, this was by FAR the worst service for such a limited menu of food i have ever seen. PLEASE do not waste your time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pros: location and outside seating

Cons: the service, food, experience

.

Fairly prompt seating, although it was a slower rainy night than usual. We were seated and asked whether we want sparkling or still water. Never asked if we wanted wine or beer. We had to ask for a bottle of Prosecco and then had to ask again for a second bottle later in the dinner. The chalk board with specials was presented with no explanations. It is in Italian so luckily we had a couple people at our table that had a rudimentary understanding of Italian. Appetizers were brought and main courses almost right after. We had appetizers left on our plates and were asked if we wanted to finish that? The poor rushed service ruins the entire experience. The food is actually pretty good in general, and certain items very good to outstanding. I pity Bar Pitti.

I am always in Italy for business and it toke me a while to find the perfect outdoor space to eat my Sat/Sun brunh with my husband butb i finally got it !
The food is real simple nice well presented and the wine list very very moderate. I really like this place and hope to can go back more often.

Went to bar pitti for a friends birthday. the place was crowded and loud, and the lighting and decor made us feel less like we were in an authentic italian restaurant and more like we were in starbucks. the food was mediocre at best... the menu is very meat heavy and the pasta was just ok. do NOT get the chicken pate... it was inedible. the service was fine, though messy at times, and the reading of the specials was extremely fast and hard to understand. overall, was not an extremely pleasant experience. there are much better italian restaurants in NYC

After my wife had a reaction she has with MSG, I inquired as to whether they use MSG. I was shocked to find out they use Knorr broth cubes in just about all the dishes. The waiter, who seemed to be Italian checked with the kitchen and confirmed they do use the MSG laced Knorr cubes. He seemed to think it was ok to do so. Hard to believe in this day and age.

The atmosphere was so incredibly warm and happy, and a little bit loud. The food was just so yummy (got the insalata toscano for appetizer and rigatoni pitti for entree)... it was a great size--not ridiculously large like most places, but just enough to leave you quite full. service was very pleasant too... and the prices are so affordable considering the quality of food... fun place... good food!

The pasta is amazing. Entrees start at $10. The wait is sometimes long, but its worth it. Get the Rigattoni Pitti. The only drawback is that it's cash only. Luckily, there are ATM's right around the corner.

Before going out to eat, we reviewed this restaurant and found some of the comments on the service concerning, however we decided to try it. I found the seating prompt. The wait staff were very friendly, even explaining the specials of the day in detail, the atmosphere was positive. The food was plentifull and delicious. I would recommend to all.

Bar Pitti came highly recommended to me, so this was a disappointing experience. Excellent food, but the service was unbelievably bad. I was being generous by giving a 12% tip. They just couldn't be bothered--obnoxious service. They didn't bring bread (whereas everyone else had bread--is it customary in NYC to ask for bread??), they didn't refill my iced tea, they weren't polite about setting down plates, and you couldn't even get grilled chicken added to pasta--"meatballs only". Moreover, they don't accept credit cards and they were nasty about it! What restaurant in this part of NYC doesn't accept credit cards? Am I in Vermont or NYC?

The service was HORRIBLE. Our waiter (who also seemed to be the manager) dropped red wine all over me & the contents of my purse and all he did was apologize quickly, hand me some club soda and avoid me for the rest of the time I was there.
The food is also below average. NEVER, ever go there.

Like most people said, the food here is great - authentic Italian with a sense of uniqueness by vieiwing the expanded menu on the blackboard. However, service here is really mixed. Since they are beyond busy, we had 2 waiters serving us during lunch. One was nice and friendly who did not mind translating the Italian menu and answering our questions. The other one was a total 180: since the place is cash only, we put down $40 for our $30.89 lunch and was expecting changes. 20 mins passed and still no sign of getting our changes. When we asked about it, we got a loud announcement of "they want their change", which everyone around us could here - ridiculous!
Anyway, food wans't bad, serivice depend on your luck, and by the way, the plate and utensils... might want to wipe them before using...

I was so looking forward to eating at Bar Pitti, i had heard great things. But from the second we sat down, the waiters were trying to get us out of the restaurant. we were asked for our order within minutes, and i was on a date, so clearly not in a rush. The waiter was completely obnoxious when we asked what he recommended and gave complete attitude about having to translate the specials from italian to english! I would not go back....

I have always enjoyed the simple food at Bar Pitti. The pasta is very good, especially the dishes with cream sauce. The penne with turkey sausage and peas is quite deliciouso. The other dishes are all very good and taste home-style. The service, as others have suggested is fair, the servers do all they need to make you have a nice meal, nothing more. THey have delicious bread to start you off (which is a nice little treat while you wait). Lastly, if you do not speak Italian, you should ask that they read you all the specials of the day, sometimes they are hidden little gems...

You may have to wait for a good 30min, but it's worth it. The food is not done up, just real simple Italian food, served by Italians. Just remember, don't go for the mood or the service. Just go for the food, and get out when you're done- people are waiting.

The truffled pasta here is truly outstanding and at something just over $20 it's one of the most expensive things on the menu. Bar Pitti is a standby for excellent food when you're looking to eat and move on, but the staff will start dropping hints for you to move on if you dawdle too long. They're highly knowledgeable and provide businesslike, excellent service - go here before or after the evening, but don't make it the focal point.

Cons: often crowded, expect short wait

The wait is usually worth it here, at this always bustling outdoor, downtown scene. Despite the "scene", the food is excellent and the restaurant's still worth going to even when the weather doesn't allow outdoor eating. The menu is varied and inventive and allows for trying a number of different things. In contrast to it's next door neighbor, Da Silvano, I like to say the food is twice as good for half the price. Just keep in mind cash only and no reservations, Enjoy!
