Mama Mia is the best sandwich! Lemon bundt cake and lemon bars are to die for. No bathrooms, though, but there are porta potties outback.

20 years ago I was in Tiverton RI with my best friend at a Little League game. For lunch, my friend's mother ventured off and soon returned with what she promised were 'gourmet' sandwiches.

My friend and I both recoiled when we saw alfalfa sprouts and what appeared to be a cranberry sauce. Despite her best intentions, my friend's mom lamely tried to reassure us by pointing the sandwich's tarragon mayo. I looked at my friend and together we furled our brows and rolled our eyes.

Much to my surprise and delight, it was the best damn sandwich I had ever eaten. I've been haunted by that damn sandwich ever since!

Last weekend I happened to be in Tiverton for the first time since those adolescent days. I saw the baseball diamond and continued down the road when I stumbled on an adorable storefront celebrating its 25th year in business. This store front featured, of all things, sandwiches.

The mysterious combination of turkey, cranberry sauce, tarragon mayo and alfalfa sprouts that had awakened my palette all those years ago now had a name, the 'Scarlet Letter'. Provender had found a long lost devotee. As I left the storefront, I found myself wearing a smudge of cranberry sauce and tarragon mayo on my cheek with pride.

A perfect place for a rest spot on your New England tour! A variety of ecclectic sandwiches. Very homemade baked goods and friendly service. Kid friendly.
