I am appalled by how many bitter, nasty, and quite frankly dishonest people here writing such dishonest filth about Almost home animal shelter! Its despicable! These dishonest comments could harm the animals and cost a potential adoption, did you people ever think of that when posting nasty lies? Im guessing some people are mad because they didn't qualify to adopt an animal and after reading their comments im GLAD they where denied such nasty dishonest childish people shouldnt own an animal! Ive adopted a dog (Bella) and two cats (Dozer & Kymba) from Almost Home and I have nothing but great things to say my experience was fantastic all three times! The staff was vey kind and helpful and the shelter was SPOTLESS! Sure its an old building and it could use a face lift a little paint and such but its NOT dirty, not even a little bit! Almost Home is a non-profit and has very little money any monies they do have is used for food medication and vet bills should they not feed the animals or get them vetted or medicine so they can buy paint and such? Of course not! To all who said its dirty I suggest you OPEN your eyes or at least learn the difference between dirty and old! To all who made negative comments I suggest you GROW UP and STOP LIEING! YOU are harming animals with your LIES! PLEASE don't believe the negative comments about Almost Home Animal Shelter, go check Almost Home out yourself and make your own decisions you will find a kind dedicated loving staff & volunteers & a clean shelter with beautiful happy animals just waiting for their forever homes!

I attempted to adopt a cat from here. After finding the kitten I liked I filled out the adoption forms and was told I would be contacted in a couple of days. After five days of waiting I called back to check on my status. When I called I was told the cat now had ring worm. They said they would call me when it's gone. After waiting for another two weeks I called back to see how the cat was doing and they said he still had worms but was getting better. Two weeks later I called again to find out the cat was all better. The problem now was I couldn't adopt this cat because I moved and my address on my license wasn't where I now live. When talking to their director she decided to tell me I wasn't right for the cat anymore and she would be moving on. She was very rude and ignorant towards me during our entire conversation. It was like she didn't care about her job at all. Not once in the month and half I was waiting did ANYONE even try to contact me. Major attitude and organizational problems with this shelter.

I visited the shelter this week with a friend who is adopting a pet. The woman who runs the shelter was not there at the time we visited. However, there were 3 young women/ volunteers working. The one girl who helped us seemed kind and helpful. The other 2 were SO rude and unfriendly. We were very friendly to them and attempted to create a conversation. They continued to be dismissive and cold. I felt like our visit was unwanted. They could not wait for our 10 minute visit with the pet to be adopted was over so they could get outside to smoke. It was nowhere close to closing time. Therefore, we weren't holding them up from going home. They were unprofessional and flat out rude. I do not know if these girls are staff or volunteers but that should make no difference. Either way, they are representing Almost Home. If you have people willing to adopt an p,animal and give it a loving home, then at the very least make them feel welcome. And for God sakes, SMILE once.

When I lost my dog named, taco in 2009, I stopped all different shelters to give out posters. I gave one copy of poster to this shelter and months later I went back to give another one, the lady knew right away when I said, Taco. They didn??t lose my poster comparing to other shelters. I have good experience with them and I have already donated some cleaning supplies to this shelter and planning to do much more.
To all the negative feedbacks on this shelter, all I have to say is that they are none profit, no kill shelter and we should be more appreciative of these people who work in there. (mostly volunteers) If you get rejected from an adoption application then you are probably not a good pet owner and it is there job to not pick people who they think is not qualify so this dog wont ended up dead in the streets. ALMOST HOME?.. GOOD JOBS

I haven't noticed any new reiews for this animal shelter and I just wanted to write a little aobut my experience with the shelter. Alhough it has been about two years now since I lost my dog Kisha, she was eventually found and taken to Almost Home by a policeman. The care and treatment that was extended to her by the people that work there in my opinion was exemplary. You have to understand that dogs and cats that are not neutered or spayed are brought to these shelters or the pounds because their people parents no longer want them or are able to care for them. If you plan or breeding your dog I can understand you maybe not wanting to get them fixed ( so to speak) but otherwise it is not only helathier for them but in most cases you are saving their lives in the long run. It is irresponsible not to get a dog or cat spayed or neutered. Two neighbors started out with a cat and their cats have had more cats (which they do not care for) and their cats have had kittens etc. I am an animal person. I have one of the Mommas and one of her kittens living under my shed. The baby hides out so I can't get her. In the winter they either freeze or starve. Please remeber these people in the shelter see abused and neglected animals all the time. THey are advocates for the animals not for people. People can speak out for themselves.

I'm a teenager and I have been in loved with animals since the day i learned about them in books. I've always wanted to volunteer at an Animal Shelter, for the benefit of the animals and to be in the National Honor Society, it also helps the community which is another thumbs up. Anyway, i've been reading horrible reviews "rude staff" "dirty facility" ETC. I really don't know what to think of it. Its sad to see how people feel about this shelter since its the only near by shelter in our community. Hopefully it will improve. I'm not sure if i should volunteer but i'll check it out first and make a decision. I hope that if i volunteer there that i would enjoy it and make it a more satisfying place to the public.

i rate it a 3 because its i the middle and its required...?

Abbout 3 years ago, Almost Home had a Shiba Inu. I love this breed & have always wanted one. When I went to see him, I was informed that he wasn't good with cats. The lady there showed me another dog, a shepherd mix, a little bigger than I was looking for, but really friendly. We decided to go with him and it's the best decision I ever made. "Boomer" is the greatest dog ever! He's such a lovable, handsome, big baby. Everyone wants him after they meet him. I couldnt be happier & feel that the ladies at Almost Home are magnificent!!

I can speak only about my contacts with Almost Home Shelter. They were the 6th shelter we visited that day and the only shelter to question us about our live styles, home, etc. Based upon a short survey, they recommended three of their dogs. They brought out each dog, one at a time, and encouraged us to take each outside to walk and interact with. The second dog was our keeper! We found our dog to be the exact temperment they said she was. If the people did not interact and pay attention to their animals for adoption, they would have been wrong about Princess. I went back six weeks later and adopted a cat. He was everything they said he was like. We have had these animals three years and I always recommend Almost Home. I truthfully can't remember anyone being rude. Personally, I couldn't have cared if they were. I went there to adopt a pet, not one of the humans. The bottom line is they have fine animals to adopt and offer the training class as well. I think they knew more about the animals there than any of the other five shelters we visited.

I have nothing but good things to say about Almost Home. I really don't understand the bad reviews. Everyone was nice and helpful, the cat room was SPOTLESS when we were there 3 different times. They allowed us to spend as much time as we wanted to, in private, with all the cats so we could really make an informed decision. Sure, the place isn't fancy or huge, but everyone seems to really care and I'm more than thrilled with my experience. I've already dropped off donated supplies and I intend to continue to help them when I can.

I adopted my darling Samantha from Almost Home. I told them what I was looking for, and they brought Sam out. I fell in love with her instantly. They considered our needs, and the needs of the dog before approving our application. They do their best to ensure that the dogs are matched with *compatible* families, so that they don't end up back at the shelter. The dogs are taken for walks frequently, and the shelter works with them on behavior as well. The dogs are treated as individuals at Almost Home, with distinct and different personalities and needs. Thus, the staff members know each dog personally and really want each dog to find a successful, happy forever-home.

Update:

I have now adopted a second dog from Almost Home. Duke is the most wonderful, loving giant lap-dog ever! I am so thankful for the staff at Almost Home for their hard work in ensuring that the right dogs are matched with the right people. Bravo!

My family recently started volunteering at Almost Home Animal Shelter. We walk the dogs each Wednesday night. I just stumbled upon the reviews when checking the website. I can not beleive anyone would have something to say about the staff and the living conditions at Almost Home. Unfortunatly I have never seen an animal shelter as nice as Almost Home. The dogs have plenty to eat, toys, fresh bedding and get walked at least three times a day. Each staff member treats the animals in their care better than most people care for their own pets. The dogs are kept in very clean kennels (not cages like most shelters) they are groomed and all of their medical needs are tended to. In the cat room each cat gets play time each day, clean liter and plenty of food. I think people who sit around and judge the work that others do need to get off the couch and do something to help.

Maybe the reason the people are so "rude" as many of you are saying, is because they have so many people writing obnoxious reviews about them when they're working so hard with so little help! You have no idea how difficult it is to try to run an animal shelter, but if they didn't care they wouldn't be doing it. So how about those of you who are complaining that the animals' best interest is not at heart, go and volunteer and actually help the people and more importantly the animals, instead of discouraging people from adopting the animals. I don't know who you're trying to help by doing that.

Anyone looking to adopt an animal from a shelter needs to keep in mind that shelters are being run on a small budget and rely heavily on donations of services and necessities. People, use your own best judgement. My family adopted a great dog from Almost Home last summer, but because we weren't the right family for him and weren't able to provide the training and time he deserved, we ultimately returned him to the shelter. From the adoption through the 6 months that he lived with us, the staff at Almost Home was always available and supportive. In response to other posts about the staff attitude, I agree there were times when I felt the staff was a little coarse but keep in mind they are there for the animals' best interest and not for your comfort. I found the office to be clean and as tidy as can be expected for so many animals. Just because you don't like the way someone spoke to you or because the office wasn't up to your standards is no reason to reject the possibility that a great animal companion is there for you. Although my personal experience did not end up with a happy ending does not mean that I would bash Almost Home. I know that the people there, Nancy especially, are true animal lovers and they are taking great care of these animals. They were open and honest with us about our dog's personality and needs before we adopted and were supportive throughout the process. I would highly recommend this shelter. As with all major decisions, be honest with yourself and the staff before you adopt an animal. It is the shelter's job to rate applicants and try to place the animals in the best home possible and if they approved every application, how good a job would they be doing? If you're looking to adopt, definitely check out Almost Home, they are good, caring people and truly care about the animals.

We recently adopted Bo, a male Boxer from the Almost Home Shelter in NJ. We adopted Bo in December of 2009. When we found the images of Bo on the shelter website I was so excited, but then I started to read some of the comments that people wrote regarding the staff and the conditions of the shelter I was a little leary to say the least. Well, we adopted Bo anyway, and couldn't be happier with the staff who took care of the adoption procedure. The staff, including Nancy were fantastic! Nancy answered every question and offered many suggestions to help Bo transition to his new home.

Many critics have said a lot of negative things, but our experience was fantastic! I think that attitude goes both ways, so maybe it is not completly the staff that is rude, but rather your own mind set when you go into adopt a pet. Adopting a pet is a privilage, and unfortunately pets sometimes end up in homes where there owners could care less about them.

Besides the staff being rude, I am out $200. from their trainer who never cancelled my 2nd session because of the weather. After 4 phone calls and more lies I am still out the $. How do they get away with running a disturbing business?

Almost home Animal Shelter is a joke. The staff is extremely rude and they act as if they don't want the pets to have a good home. I left there never wanting to adopt a pet ever, I bought my puppy instead, I would never rescue a pet from a shelter like that,if the staff's temperment is as rude and disgruntle I can only imagine what they have done to those animals especially in the manner of which the kennel is maintained.

I thought the staff was okay, but I felt like they were very discriminatory and judgmental. I previously owned a male dog and never had him neutered. I disclosed the fact and was told that my application would automatically get disqualified. Are you serious?

I even put on my application that I would sign a contract to get the dog neutered after adoption or even before adoption was complete - nope. You would think that if they really had the dog's best interest at heart, they would eliminate applicants based upon something else other than an issue which could be easily fixed.

Regardless of bad reviews or not - I doubt the animals in their care will get the care they deserve and need if they are not permitting these animals the opportunity to find good homes.

I am in the process of looking for a family dog.. The reviews u people are writing will prevent people from going there to adopt and you are perhaps causing these very animals that we love so much to be there with noone trying to adopt and getting them outta there. If it is so bad there then go back and rescue one of the doggies. the repacutions of this nonsense will come down to dogs being put to sleep rather then having a chance that you have taken from them because of your selfish and thoughtless remarks. just knock it off. and put your money where your mouth is like i intend to do!

If it is so bad there then go back and rescue one of the doggies. the repacutions of this nonsense will come down to dogs being put to sleep rather then having a chance that you have taken from them because of your selfish and thoughtless remarks. just knock it off. and put your money where your mouth is like i intend to do!

Ok, let's set the record straight. This is a non-profit organization which means that they operate on very little money and try to do their best with what they have. I am appalled by the people who have written negative reviews of this shelter. I have been to every animal shelter in the area and was given more attention by the staff at Almost Home then at any other shelter. All of the people at each shelter were very nice, but Almost Home staff wanted to know what type of animal, size, and temperment I was looking for. They were interested in matching my family's needs to my prospective new pet. I was not allowed to aimlessly wander the cages of the homeless animals but was met with concern by the staff who were willing to bring out each dog they felt met my needs. You can't tell anything from a dog in a cage surrounded by other dogs barking. They personally brought the dog to me in the waiting room and allowed me to sit with him and learn about his personality. I was then allowed to take a walk with him and a staff member. What a great experience. They had him checked out by Rothman Animal Hospital who generously take care of the strays that Almost Home has. He was found to have heart worms, which Almost Home elected to treat prior to the dog being adopted. The treatment was $400.00. Only a kind and caring animal shelter would spend money to save the life of an animal. I reimbursed the shelter, but not everyone would be in a position to do so. They did it out of the kindness of their hearts. As for the comments about lack of ventilation, dirty and small cages I would like to encourage all of you who read this to call and donate time or make a small donation so they have more to work with. The money does not go in the staff's pockets, but goes directly to improve the quality of these animals lives during their stay at Almost Home. They have no control over who decides to get rid of their dogs and or carelessly abandon them. They are trying to provide homes to these helpless animals until proper new homes can be found. If more people would have their animals fixed to avoid unnecessary pregnancy or if more people would realize that when you take an animal it is for life, not just until it's no longer convenient for you there would be no problem with over crowding. The staff are there trying to fix and manage a problem that they didn't create. Again, I am appalled by the comments of the people who are so critical.

Hi All,

My fiance and I had adopted a dog from the Pennsylvania SPCA before our experience at Almost Home. The dog which we had adopted at the PSPCA, we had to return because of problems which were not disclosed to us when we adopted it. While I agree the staff at Almost Home could be more pleasant, and while I admit, I myself had doubts about the way the animals were kept in the back, they were upfront about our dog and they wanted what was best for the dog. They answered all our questions and even offered a free training class to people who adopt there. We could not be happier with our dog.that we adopted from Almost Home, and we're thinking about adopting again, and continue to check the adoption lists at the Shelter. Please keep in mind, the animals can not control how the shelter is kept. They don't decorate and clean. While it may be dirty, at least the staff is taking care of the dogs, and feeding them, and walking them, and that is more than alot of people who actually own pets.

John: Maybe you could suggest whom the proper authorities to complain to are. In researching problems with my local animal control, I've found it difficult to identify who will take effective action on problems I have experienced within that agency. Maybe the people who are complaining on this message board are not sure which groups can help to improve the problem.

To all of you people who have had these "horrible experiences" with almost home and "wouldnt recomend this shelter" to anyone, why dont you think about the implications your reviews could have...Pretty much all of you in your reviews had something to say about the conditions that the animals are kept in, how dirty the facility is and how incompetent the manager is. You also all expressed that it is not fair to the animals to be stuck in these conditions.Furthermore, you all went on to say how you dont recommend this shelter and you wouldnt use it again. So, lets think about this for a second, who benefits and who is hurt by putting these types of comments on the web for everyone looking for a pet to see. All that these types of comments do is force these animals to live in a shelter longer, and possibly for the rest-of their lives.I think you should all stop being so stuck up and worrying about a rude staff, as if that has any bearing on why or where you should adopt a pet. The staff could be rude, the manager incompetent and the conditions poor, but what good does it do to rant on a stupid message board. You all can spend the time to get on here and say all these negative things. My question to you is, did you spend the time to make a complaint to the manager/ staff/ animal conmtrol or any other proper authority that could rectify the problems gthat you all mention?I doubt it.And just for the record, I am in no way affiliated with alost home nor am I a person that regularly posts on these boards. I just think it is ridiculous for all of you to get on here and talk about how bad the shelter is, which only hurts the animals there, instead of actually doing something that may right the problems you all mention. If you think I a wrong or disagree and want me to know about it feel free to email me at monte63453@yahoo.com.

As I entered the facility, I was appalled by what I had witnessed. The staff members were more interested (in flirting) with each other rather than doing the job for which they were hired. I would not recommend this shelter, the staff seems to be more interested in finding their own partners instead of partners for their pets. Other shelters allow you to view the kennels and I have to wonder why no one is permitted to do so there.

I went to Almost Home to adopt a kitten and found the staff there to be extremely rude. I played with a few kittens and after i found one i liked very much they told me they would contact me within 24-48 hrs. I called after 48 but they said to call back, I called after another 24 hrs and they told me my application had been put aside because i didn't name a vet i would use and that it was written on my application that i had a cat die when it was 5 or 6 because i let it outside! I was appalled. I did not name a vet because i have no other pets, which they knew... and my dad had been chatting with one of the employees there about how my old family cat liked to lay outside in the sun and he passed away when we thought he was sleeping! He had not mentioned how old he was, but he was 12... and i was in another country when he died! I just thought it was terrible that these people would rather have their cats sit it cages until they have to get euthanized then be able to go home with a loving family. It's been a week since I applied and they still have not called me to let me know. In the meantime I adopted two beautiful kittens who are happily playing in my home right now. What a shame that those animals don't get adopted because the employees are so rude and ridiculous!

Well I certainly feel better knowing that people can apply for a pitbull at this shelter and take ownership the same day. The person who manages this shelter is hopelessly incompetent and I have no idea why she was given this job when she doesn't even live in Pennsauken.

They could have found a Pennsauken resident just as incompetent as Nancy, if they had spent more time looking.

Saturday night our precious cat Buttercup was hit by a car. The police found her without her collar and brought her to Almost Home Animal Shelter. By Tuesday our prayers were answered and we were reunited with Buttercup. Although Almost Home has very limited funds they managed to get her on antibiotics and take care of her on our behalf. We took her to the vet tuesday evening for x-rays and our veterinarian was very complimentary as to the way Almost Home cared for her. It's still hard to imagine what could have happened to her. The gratitude we feel toward the police and toward this shelter is immense and a donation will be coming to Almost Home in honor of the committment shown to Buttercup. "Thank you" doesn't express how deeply we appreciate this little life that has been saved by the efforts of the folks at Almost Home.

When my boyfriend and I first went into Almost Home it seemed very dirty and we saw cages over crowded with kittens before a rude and dirty seeming employee quickly shut the door. The warehouse where the dogs are kept was not a warm or good environment for any animal and the crates are too small for some of the bigger dogs. We filled out an application and spent time with what we thought was the perfect dog for us. The girl who helped us was very nice and they led us to believe that we would be getting the dog and they assured us that we would hear from them in 24-48 hours. After 2 days we went over to the shelter to find out that not only did they give the dog to another family but they didn't even have the decency to call and inform us of the adoption. It was just all around a very unprofessional and dirty establishment and I would never recommend this adoption agency to any one!

In August 2007 our sweet dog Babe died from canine cancer. She was a special dog, We tried everything, and despite all of our efforts we could not save her life.We came upon Almost Home's web page - and since we lived in Pennsauken, we decided to visit the shelter. This is one of the best choices we have ever made. The people at the shelter were friendly, caring compassionate, patient and very understanding. They allowed us to take each dog that we had interest in for a walk, and to spend time with them.
It was a most pleasant experience. We adopted our 12 month old Pit Bull mix Daisy there that day, Everything required by us was spelled out clearly. We had to bring our other dog Karma there to meet Daisy to make sure that they got along. This showed me the level of interest that the Almost Home people have in the quality of life that their dogs will live upon leaving the shelter
I have nothing but the best to say about Almost Home.
