Altimari's Little Italy is just okay

by Jose P.

Decent...

I agree with those who state the place is small, tight and the help is not very friendly.

But I would not say they are rude, just very quiet and not very talkative.

I disagree however with the food reviews.

I find their italian pastries always good, their sandwiches are reasonable for the price, decent soup and they do have some nice italian products there.

If you can overlook the puss on the 2 guys faces who work there, I think it is overall a decent place.

Snarly Service

by Deborah o. | insider Insider | Rank: 25,782

The food is marginal.
The store is so tiny, you can hardly squeeze through the isles.
The service is what left me dismayed. These folks are rude and snarly.
I went for the porcheta, but Jerry's Market in Seymour is better and he makes his own!
I would never buy there again.

This is a 5 star deli

by Serena A.

I've known this place for ten years, I know all of the food, drinks, ETC are not stale, or past the experation date. Its one of the best little Italian deli's you can come to. I will start with the sand-witch's. They are always good. My favorite is the cheese and turkey. I also enjoy the pasta. Always a good lunch or snack. The home-made soup is good too! I always love getting tea, or hot chocolate. The expresso's and capuccino's are FANTASTIC!
When you come in this mini deli you will be happy.

Alka-Seltzer,PLEASE

by RAJ R.

I apologize to all the special people at Josephine's Market.
I strayed into Altimari's Little Italy and after major stomach pains, I promise you at Josephine's, that I'll NEVER GO BACK TO ALTIMARE'S LITTLE ITALY.
Yeah, I suffered after eating a salami sandwich I bought from Little Italy that's why I need Alka-Seltzer ASAP!
I love the old world charm and humble people at JOSEPHINE'S and there delicious appetizing fresh sandwiches.
Another word of CAUTION,NEVER EAT THE PIZZA AT ALtimare's.It's very SOGGY and Greasy.
Oh,one more thing DON'T BUY BREAD at altimare's either.JOSEPHINE'S MAKES SCRUMPTIOUS FRESH BREAD EVERY SINGLE DAY.
I LOVE JOSEPHINE'S.

Is Zero Stars Available?

by Sonia m. | insider Insider | Rank: 31,764

First , my apologies to the owners.

Next, let's offer some of our poor impressions of this deli and also offer possible solutions. (I can relate to the negativity in these reviews because of similar experiences)

My grievance is with the employees. The young man who waited on me was crude and nearly hostile. He would not even tell me what was in the pasta that I ordered.

The solution, astonishingly simple. Hire a clerk with more knowledge on social skills.

The place really is that bad.

by ex- c.

Sorry, Serena, but the negative reviews are pretty accurate. I have been to Altimari's countless times (lifelong Valley resident); and every time I went there, I would be polite and friendly, only to be treated rudely in return. After a while, I had enough of the disrespectful treatment, and decided that your grandparents deserved one less customer. If that offends you, I suggest you take it up with them.

Great Place

by Stella J.

I think that these bad reviews must be because of one bad incident that the customer experienced because in general I have not found the staff to be rude at all. When I do go there, I find the people friendly and my mom goes there almost every Sunday for coffee because they make the best coffee around and the staff are always friendly to her. They have fresh rolls and their sandwiches are inexpensive but great quality. I like that Altimari's is not like some fancy place, it's a small little valley place and definitely the place to go if you want the best coffee around. I am only sad because they used to have Salami Milano but now only Genoa salami!

WE ARE THE OWNERS!!!

by Store O.

Thanks KIM my grandparents own the store. I think you are awfully rude and only think of the bad times or bad thoughts that you have been their. My grandparents have been on their feet for the past 21 years from 5 AM-5 PM to make everyone happy and to enjoy every sale they make. Our food is completely fresh. YOU ARE OUT OF YOUR MIND IF YOU THINK OUR SAND-WITCH'S ARE NOT FRESH!! My grandma makes them every morning. And if you think any other rude comments well. MAKE YOUR OWN STORE!And THAT old man IS MY GRANDPA, NICE TO EVERYONE!I've also been working there in the weekends and always paid attention to what the employ es have reacted to the customers,They always said something nice,Now,When you come in a store if you, have nice manors believe me you will get nice manors back-Serena

not fresh like Eddy's

by rita r.

That pastry in the case stays there forever.
You don't know when she bought it from the baker she uses.
And who is this mystery bakery?
They specialize in one dollar sandwiches.
High prices.
Not recommended.

Where's the Love?

by kim p.

This place is just awful. The stuff is close to expired, covered in dust, kept on dirty-looking shelves and in even dirtier-looking fridges. The prices are outrageous- you'd think you were at some top-notch import store in Manhattan or something. Worst of all, the couple that owns & operates the place is unbelievably rude. (It's especially delightful to go in there as an Italian-American, try to say hello and order in Italian, and have them deliberately answer you in English out of disrespect, all while they're busy chatting up their favorite clique of local regulars in Italian!) The other customers stomp around and shove into you with no apologies, either. Expect to spend a good ten minutes waiting for the wife to do so much as look up from her coffee machine in the bakery side when you're trying to order from her. No "How are you?"; no "Have a nice day"; not even a "Thank you", no matter how friendly you are.

Especially fun: The day the old man snapped, "Hurry up- I'm busy right now!" at me for having had the audacity to approach the cash register with a few things, with no other customers in sight. Apparently, moving those hunks of salami around the dirty old deli counter was more important than making a sale! Incidentally, that was the final straw- never set foot in the place since.

This place is awesome! -if you like getting pushed around and treated obnoxiously, that is...

I'M TOO BEAUTIFUL FOR THIS "GROCERS"

by SharyanB D.

MY ADMIRER FROM HUNTINGTON WOULD NEVER,EVER HAD TAKEN ME HERE.
WE WERE IN THE STAGE WHERE HE WAS DEEPLY IN LOVE WITH ME.

HE WANTED TO MARRY ME (NOT UNUSUAL FOR ME) AS I'VE HAD MANY PRPOSALS WITH MY PERFECTLY CHISLED FACE.

IF HE COULD HAVE MADE A SCULPTURE FROM A BALL OF CLAY,.WELL.IT WOULD BE MY VERY ABSOLUTE AND PERFECT BEAUTIFUL FACE.

HE WOULD NEVER BRING ME HERE. HE BROUGHT ME ONLY TO THE VERY BEST.

AND HIS AIM AND DEVOTION WAS TO SPOIL ME.

BUT I AM PERFECT AND BEAUTIFUL AND I'M USED TO THER VERY BEST
AND THE MOST EXPENSIVE,
HE'D BE ASHAMED THAT I'D REFUSE HIS MARRIAGE PROPOSAL IF HE'D BROUGHT ME HERE.

by sam l. | insider Insider | Rank: 32,651

Unfortunatly, these are sad little people running the store. They must be awful tired out because they can't bear to even smile.
The stuff is way to high for this area in Derby, after all , it's not 5th avenue,NYC here !
Sorry ,but a total sinker here.

I don't mind the staff

by Cynthia B. | insider Insider | Rank: 27,280

But when I saw their "premade one dollar sandwich" I had to laugh.

They are nice people , but It's too pricey to buy SOMETHING FRESH.

I have passe this place so many times and stopped in just a couple times.

Because aside from the 1$ sandwich , the rest of their sales aren;'t the freshest in this area.

PROS: Nice people
CONS: old pastries and meats

A DOLLAR SANDWICH ?????

by Wilt K.

What's in it ?
I'd never buy food for a dollar, ( maybe a bag of chips ), but definitly WILL NOT TRY THE DOLLAR SANDWICH.
That's like practicaly " giving it away ". And there must be a reason for that....
I even Shp THE DOLLAR STORES, but not for A SANDWICH !!!
I hope they ASLO SELL TUMS THERE !
The " PRE MADE " SANDWICH IS HOW THEY ADVERTIZE IT.
Maybe that's why it costs only a dollar, it might be frozen for months !
In any case I bought Italian meats by the 1/2 a pound AND THAT WAS NOT FRESH either !
I'll stick to Yolanda's up the street from there. At least Yolanda's sells enough to keep Mortadella TO SELL it fresh !
P.S The place will chew your ears off ' IF YOU PARK ' in front of their store.

PROS:
CONS: She throws you ou for parking in front of the store !!!!!

NOT A GOOD IDEA WITH EGGS !

PROS: DOLLAR SANDWICH

Great Italian Subs!

by xxx x.

They have excellent Italian meats. The Parma Prosciutto is fresh and priced below the average. The cappuccino is one of the best around. I love the old World feel everyone speaks Italian. The staff is very friendly and always happy to see you!

by Michael R. C. | insider Insider | Rank: 15,800

TOO BAD NOTHING'S HOME MADE

by Pamela k. | insider Insider | Rank: 26,934

It's also a shame that the pastry is not fresh :(

This bakery was kind of disapponting.

The woman who runs the bakery section is snobbish. What for ? She has been seen actually yelling at customers...oh well

She should see and taste what The Royal Bakery in Shelto has to offer !

PROS: I can't even dream one up
CONS: everything about Altimari's

first let me tell you about the workers

by lawrence Edward m. | insider Insider | Rank: 18,521

I think its a family working here.the lady who makes coffee is always gabbing.when she doesn't gab then she starts making the coffee.I think these people like talking in thier own language cause most of the time it ain't english.Theres alot of gossiping in there and no the lady don't make no pastry she just rings it up and charges a fortune for it.i tried it once and it wasn't the best pasrtry around but it'll do.they got tables inside where people just sit and gossip.the deli is way to expensive.the only sandwich I can afford are the ones that cost a dollar i think its ham and cheese.I dont like the food much or the gossip niether
