I have not had ribs this good since 1991 in SC. A must place if you truly know how ribs should taste. The only minor problem is the service can be slow. Even so it is worth the wait.

I am a new DC transplant to Hagerstown. First thing on my local agenda was to find my favorite food...BBQ! The wonderful Hempen Hill BBQ was all and more than I expected. I had dinner there Saturday evening, February 23 and I will return. It was a memorable dinner. Although the restaurant was packed and many were waiting to be seated, the Hostess immediately sat me at the bar and in no time I was delighting in an exceptional micro brewed libation, and Hempen Hill serves many varieties. I had the brisket. It was perfectly cooked, had a beautiful smoke ring, was moist and served with a deliciously light and piquant Carolina sauce. Although I was presented with a six pack of BBQ sauces it needed nothing else. It was just delicious and a very ample serving, beautifully sliced. The side dishes I sampled were rather extraordinary too. The Mac and Cheese was a rich paring of al dente cooked Italian penne pasta in a thick and smokey cheddar sauce. It was unusual and satisfying. The cole slaw was like my grandmother made. The cabbage was shredded very fine. It was peppered with celery seed and completely yummy. I could have only wished for more! I really could not have eaten more and will have to wait until my next visit to try a dessert. I had my eye on a piece of chocolate/peanut butter cake, but prudence held sway. The Bartenders were very friendly and the crowd at the bar most amicable. You could see the staff really knew how to manage a busy Saturday night and stay on top of it. My bill, which included a prime entree, two sides, and two pints of micro brew beer was under $25.00. Quite a deal...plus there was an excellent band and no cover charge...Can You Beat That??? I was impressed; you will be too. I recommend it highly.

I was surprised that this restaurant had two excellent reviews as well as two mediocre reviews. Since I just visited the restaurant, I can say that the mediocre comments were spot on.

First of all we were seated at a wobbly table (the waitress was well aware of the problem), but nothing was done about it until we used some sugar packs to balance the table.

Then we found that the BBQ was dry for the most part. The brisket and chicken were almost inedible. The ribs and pork were better but the rub made the taste too spicy to enjoy as it added nothing to the meat and was offensive in the long run. Good meat that is well-smoked doesn't need all that rub. Usually it only covers up mediocrity and that is certainly true here. Thank goodness for the BBQ sauce and cole slaw which helped some.

The sweet tea was poorly done too. It tasted of tea sweetened after the fact or was too strong and not sweetened enough. Very disappointing. In fact,we were very disappointed by the visit and since we had specifically driven to Hagerstown for this restaurant, we are not likely to return.

Recently moved to Hagerstown. Heard about Hempen Hill BBQ at a Suns' baseball game. Have been looking forward to eating there ever since. Finally had the chance a week ago.

I ordered "A Trip with Hempen Hill," which has pit beef, pulled pork, smoked chicken, a few baby back ribs, and a small portion of their cole slaw.

All the meats were dry. The slaw was tasty though.

My friend ordered 1/2 BBQ chicken. She said the chicken was dry.

Very disappointed. Not sure if I'll go back.

Been to Hempen Hill numerous times since their opening & it gets better with each visit. Like any new place, there are still some kinks to work out, but the service especially is top notch. Everything off the menu that I have tried thus far has been great. I highly recommend the ribs & pit beef--both are terrific. Hagerstown has been in dire need of a nice place where both adults & kids can have a good time--Hempen Hill fits the bill perfectly!

I was surprised to see the first review considering our excellent experiences on our numerous visits. The date of the review indicates she dined during the first few days it was open - NEVER judge a restaurant during opening week!

While the decor is a bit spartan and a little noisy, I'm sure the owners will add their touches over time. The rich color scheme helps to make the place feel warm and inviting. On our visits, we found the staff both attentive and personable. As the staff begins to hit their groove, the service is becoming smoother.

First, we sampled their house beers. Local craft brews are excellent examples of their style. The pale ale was crisp and floral with just the right hops bite, and the stout was rich, lush, and creamy with slight vanilla undertones. The wings - crisp and tangy - were quite respectable for this area. The onion rings were indeed hand battered and not frozen.

The real test of a BBQ joint, of course, is the barbecue. Sweet and smoky with a touch of heat and slight vinegar bite, the meat was tender and had obviously been slow-smoked. It reminded us of our Carolina road trips and stops at back road BBQ shacks. They really know what they're doing. We particularly enjoyed the sampler platter and found everything on it excellent, right down to the slaw.

Though the food costs a little more than the BBQ shacks on our road trips, the prices are reasonable for the style and quantity of the food. We left quite satisfied by the portion sizes.

This is not some typical bland generic chain theme restaurant with a homogeneous food and cliche over-done decor. It's just good BBQ and is well worth a visit!

PROS: The food and drink; the personnel
CONS: Owners still working on decor.

If your looking for a place with a great atmosphere, great service, and great food Hempen Hill BBQ is definitely not the place for you. My husband and I found countless things wrong with this establishment. I realize this is a new restaurant but there were far too many issues in this establishment to just forgive and forget. I'll begin with the ambiance, there was definitely no creativity used when designing this restaurant. They didn't even have a single picture or decoration hanging on the wall. Most restaurants have a theme but this one had no theme at all unless you consider boring a theme. The most decorative part of the restaurant was the bar with exposed wiring and open metal studs. But this is just the tip of the iceberg.
My husband and I waited 15 minutes before someone came to wait on us. The male bartender noticed us but after realizing we were there he avoided eye contact at all costs. As a matter of fact almost all of the employees avoided eyed contact with us up to and including the managers. Once we were finally waited on we looked forward to a great meal!
After waiting about 25 or 30 minutes my husband and I saw what we suspected to be our food come from the kitchen area but it didn't come right to our table. First it went to the bar where it sat for a few minutes and then it was picked up by one of managers. One would think she would be en route to our table with the dinner but she felt it more important to stand and talk for about 5 minutes with some people before she finally brought it to our table. When our food finally arrived my husband and I were ready to dig in. If cold sweet potato fries and a bland tequila lime chicken sandwich made with bread as hard as a brick are a delicacy then he and I were living it up!
I have never been more disgusted and dissatisfied with a restaurant in all my life. When our server arrived back at our table (which was only the third time we had seen her) to see our half eaten meal she asked if would like boxes to take the leftovers home. We told our server of our disappointment with our meal and she was quick to reply she would get the manager for us. A few minutes later our server comes back and tells us she will give us 50% off our bill and an $8 gift certificate. We accepted her offer but told her that we still wanted to speak to a manager. We saw our server walk over to both managers of the restaurant and say something and point to our table. The two ladies stood there as if trying to figure out which one would come and speak to us. Absolutely disgusted by the unwillingness of one of the managers to come speak to us my husband and I got up to leave the restaurant(leaving our $8 gift card on the table). Finally, seeing us in motion to leave I caught a glimpse of one the managers heading toward our table. My husband and I proceeded to walk out of the restaurant, the manager catches us at the door and in a tone as if she is unaware of the situation asks us if we had wanted to speak to her. At this time we both turned around and said no thanks, she seemed surprised and then told us we had left our gift card we both replied by telling her we would not need it.
I guess all in all what I'm trying to say is don't waste your time or money. Hempen Hill BBQ is overpriced especially for food that is cold and taste like cardboard. You can spend less money at some place like TGIFridays and get better food and service. So the next time you may be in the Fountain Head Area and you see the sign for Hempen Hill BBQ look for the Hill of Beans first.

PROS: The best part about this restaurant is it's neon sign.
CONS: Far to many to list in this little space.
