These guys are quite simply the best mechanics in NYC, and possibly the entire Eastern seaboard. (I feel qualified saying this, having had numerous Volvos fixed in 4 states over 23 years.) I dealt w/ Michael who is competent, honest, and personable. He explained in (layman's) detail exactly what my car needed, prioritized the repairs, and helped me come to the decision that my car was not worth fixing b/c of its age, even though that would have meant $ for him and L&M. I'm slightly wistful I won't have a car anymore now that I found this place.

I bought a VW van and Bill was able to give me a straight rundown of what I'd have to do, essentials and unessentials. It was expensive, but I was informed of what was being done and given options. Repairs and pricing was explained to me clearly so I could understand. I wasn't rushed out the door. I feel lucky to have found a mechanic I can trust.

L&M are the only competent, honest mechanics I have been able to find for my VW - and I have been to quite a few. I have to travel a long way to get to their shop, but in the end having repairs done correctly is well worth the extra time. L&M was able to diagnose and fix problems that were worsened by faulty & very expensive repairs at other shops nearer to my home. L&M is such a positive contrast to my other repair shop experiences, that this is the first review I've ever written. I'm now thinking I may be able to actually keep my 11 year old VW, which before I used L&M seemed impossible because of the frequent & expensive unresolved problems and faulty repairs. I think a lot of the problems with VW is not so much the cars, but the lack of competent places to have them serviced and repaired. L&M is the best place I've found by a mile! If you have a VW Passat with the very common interior water leakage problems and resulting corroded wiring and electronics, L&M can fix it for you, and will take the time to identify and stop where the water is coming from. I paid another repair shop hundreds of dollars in labor for the same thing, only to find out they didn't even try to stop the leaks. But my intention in writing this is not to make this a rant about other bad repair shops. Based upon the problems they have sorted out with my car, I want to highly recommend L&M as skilled mechanics who really do their best to get the job done right! Thanks L&M!

I really wanted to like these guys, and was fully prepared for a wonderful mechanic experience, based on the preponderance of glowing reviews on this site, but...my experience with L&M was below average to average (at best), and my mechanic search will continue. I think that people have such low expectations of mechanics, that they just get overwhelmed with emotion when they encounter one who is seemingly honest, or otherwise comforting (see almost every other review), and while L&M definitely lay on (and cash in on) a certain style of customer service, that other mechanics would be wise to employ, in the end, I didn't sense that Bill and his sons were any more honest or better skilled than average. I was back and forth to them several times before they kinda fixed my car.

i have a audi a4 with a engine light on for a year ,i took this car to the dealer and other shops ,they all told me they found the problem well after spending $2700.00 my problem was still there ,bill at l and m foreign cars , fix my car in 10 minutes ,was a valve put in the wrong way ,he charged me a diagnostic fee and the car is fine ,the best $120.00.i spent ,they are honest and great .i will go to them even if i have to change a light bulb...adam

L & M Foreign Cars turned an unsavory experience with an unscrupulous Manhattan Auto Repair shop into a thorough and smooth restoration of our car.

My daughter, who had our Virginia based VW in Brooklyn, N. Y. over the holidays, collided with road debris in the Lincoln Tunnel. She had the car towed to 54th St. Auto Center on Dec. 30th for repairs, diagnosed by them, as oil pan replacement. The ?repair? failed, the engine ?seized?, the auto shop refused to release the car for repairs elsewhere, refused to calculate what ?charges? were due on the car, even lied about a check they received from our insurance company. Bad scene upon bad scene ? three weeks into her ordeal - I told my daughter that I would handle research and repairs from Virginia.

Bill Roth and his son Michael listened to my telephone account of the ?nightmare? experience, asked numerous probing and intelligent questions about the accident and the car?s condition, and agreed to take on the project. All this occurred after a 15-minute conversation with a total stranger. The VW is a 2001 GTI and is now better than new! It has always been a good car. With it?s restored engine and numerous other adjustments necessitated by the accident and subsequent faulty repairs, it should serve for many years of safe and enjoyable driving. It?s reassuring to know that we now have a superb shop of mechanics to call on the Brooklyn to service the car in the future. All of the work to restore the engine was accomplished within the budget established by the adjuster sent out by our insurance company.

I could not recommend more highly the multi-generational L & M Foreign Car-Guys. Like good surgeons everywhere, Bill Roth called the day after my daughter picked up the car to check on its performance. I am left with a renewed faith in the honesty and skill of truly fine mechanics. Theirs is an art form of the highest order.

I discovered L & M two years when on a trip from Boston into NYC my car broke down. After hearing the umpteenth shakedown from Audi dealers (brakes, coils, suspension) I took a chance and went to L & M.

The folks at L & M told me exactly what was wrong, fixed it, and I emerged without feeling I'd been ripped off. From that time on, each time I need something done, I'd drive down from Boston to Brooklyn for servicing/repairs.

Then I moved to Toronto (Canada). How good are these guys? I time my servicing during vacations so I can bring my Audi to L & M.

These guys are honest and smart. After they fixed the AC on my BMW (pulling the dash and reconnecting wires) I picked it up. A few miles down the road it stopped working. I took it back and they had to get another part. They didn't charge me labor for the extra work. It's hard to find a way to get around the dealerships, which rob you blind. These guys are the best alternative I've found.

I had a BMW that would no start, I had the car tow to there location and within hours a got a call stating that they had diagnose the problem and the car was running back up to specs, I will recommenced because of prompt service and fear pricing..

i have a bmw and a vw i have tried several dealers and highly rated independent shops in nyc. L&M is worth the trip. They are talented and great at diagnosing and fixing difficult problems A great experience. you have to try them.. they are very fair and good price.

I love this place and so does my 1997 bmw .Billy and his sons service him. They are all beyond courteous in every way. They perform only the work needed to get the car running unless they throw in extra adjustments and updates to tweak him out. I would highly suggest them to anyone with a foreign car. recently used l&m foreign cars, they were referred to me by a friend of mine that had a good experience. unfortunately mine wasnt. to make a long story short, do not deal with the sons. if you do decide to go there only work with the father (owner). i was not happy with the service or the bill. i felt like the sons wanted all my money, i was not happy.

Great overall experience!

Bill and his sons are very friendly, accommodating, and they treat their customers with honesty and respect.

The elusive mechanical noise that I've been hearing for months was finally diagnosed. Bill personally took time to drive around with me, pin-pointing the issue. Everything was properly explained, estimated and all the work was done in the best time frame possible.

I highly recommend their services to anyone in need of high quality automotive mechanical expertise.

I've been to many mechanics all over the place. Now I have found one that I can trust and not worry about getting ripped off or getting terrible work done.
I went to get some things checked out, and the experience was amazing. Long story short, The service is great, the prices are great, and the guys over there let you watch and learn about everything they are doing to your car.
I learned more about my car in one day than I would have in a lifetime! The coolest part was the diagnostic testing. You get to see all the codes and the readouts on a big plasma screen TV.
I never thought getting your car fixed could be such a good experience. I want to thank all the guys at L & M Foreign Cars.

My band is on tour and our AC went out in record heat here in New York. Finding a trustworthy mechanic was a bit... terrifying! The folks at L&M were not only amazingly fast, reasonable and thorough, but an absolute pleasure to hang out with! Billy the owner is an enlightened mechanic... I love this place and so does my 1990 Red Cabriolet. I think the car gets sick on purpose so he can go back and have Billy and his sons service him. They are all beyond courteous in every way. All I have to say is they are the BEST!!! Best Service, Best Price, Best Everything. I have NEVER in my life or as long as I've had my Volkswagen Passat had a good experience with fixing my car. To the point where I started hated my car. It is not the car, it is the dealership mechanics who don't know a thing about fixing a car or about quality customer service. L&M will always have my money. If my car needs any work or has any problem, I will bring it to them.

i am not normally one to fill out these reviews, but i feel compelled to do so because of the fact that L&M saved my car....i have an older model volvo and the timing belt snapped, any other place would have told me the car is toast and to forget about it. L&M took it in and spent literally less than 2 days including parts delivery time, and changed my car completely. they not only replaced my timing belt, but cleaned everything in and on the engine, i swear it looked like they put a brand new engine in. once you meet them you understand that it is ok to leave your car with them, they take over and walk you through what they are going to do and and don't do anything without calling you first and making sure you understand what they are going to do, once they got my OK it was done in one and a half working days!

i am definitely sold, they may be kind of far out there, but to me i would drive all the way to providence if L&M were there. Yes....they are that good.

I took my car in this past summer after finding them on google and I must say that all the reviews were accurate. I went in and told them the symptoms and they took their time with me explaining a few of the solutions and what course can be taken. they also went out of their way to take me on a small tour of the facility. I think that was to assure me that my baby would be in good hands and it was. They even replaced a brake light that i hadnt noticed was out. My wife just called them for another issue about the car and she was pleased with the patience and respect she received while she asked a few questions. They have earned my trust and whenever I can I talk about my great experience. I am sure if you use them you will have the same experience.

best shop by far: i really don`t like going to shops,because it a giving fact all are rip offs,but i took my car to this shop and i was amazed that Bill and mike the son the owners was very patient and very experienced in cars,with state of art computer to tell you what wrong with the car,no guessing games,my car came out working like new and the price was right too,i highly recommend his shop to every woman out there and men too,thank you Bill and MIKE

There are many reasons why these guys have been servicing German machines for over two decades.

Firstly, they don't work on your car as if it's just a "car"-- instead, they recognize that German autos are first class machines, requiring care, knowledge, patience and detailed, careful work. Second, unlike dealers and other mechanics, these guys recognize the value of running a business with long term customer relations. They regard each and every customer with respect, attention, and careful regard to respect the customer's wallet- I know it seems incredible in this day and age, but these guys are keen to foster customers for the long run.

In my case, a few months ago, my Audi broke down in a Manhattan garage, and based on the reviews, I gave L & M a call. Bill came on the phone, and despite never having met me, he patiently listened to what I had to say, made some recommendations on how to get the car started. Once this was done, I drove over to Brooklyn, and they looked at my car, despite lacking an appointment- they saw that I was out of town, and needed help badly.

Billy and his crew, went over the car in detail, identified the problem, and charged me a very reasonable price and quick around time You dont get the nagging feeling you're paying too much, nor are you pestered with tales of what else is wrong with your car. They were so nice, that while the CPU was plugged into the car, Billy installed a software patch for my transmission which made the car faster- for FREE! Where else will you get such service? It's no wonder I travel from Boston to Brooklyn just to get fair, honest, professional work on my investment. As an economics professor, I appreciate L & M's business philosophy of cultivating long term relations- these guys are a gem !! Highly recommended!!

Do note that German cars are machines and work may take longer than expected-- but an ounce of prevention with these guys will save you an unpleasant breakdown later.

I've always dreaded car mechanics: being a girl and afraid I may not understand what the mechanics are explaining to me, not knowing if I'm being ripped off etc, etc. BUT i'm glad to have found a place that puts all my uneasiness to rest. Billy takes his time explaining in layman terms everything I needed to know, offers good, sound advise and is very reasonably priced (I didn't feel like I was being taken advantage of at all). He orders parts in front of you and makes you feel like part of his family - definitely not the hard-core mechanic, macho feel at some other places. Billy even called me a couple of days later to follow-up to see if my car was running ok - I have definitely NEVER received such a follow-up call from any other mechanic!
I agree with all the positive feedback on this site and if you are used to feeling apprehensive about going to try out a new mechanic, I strongly recommend L&M Foreign Cars

I actually used L&M's customer reviews to gain assurance that this was the place in NYC to go with my 1995 Audi Quattro Sport. Bill and Michael were great. Bill caught the fact that my timing belt had never been changed in 12 years.This saved my engine and me from ending up on the side of the road somewhere. He also fixed my air conditioning by recharging the freon instead of going inside the dashboard which would have been very expensive. The most surprising thing was that he wouldn't touch my car until I had checked with my previous mechanic to see if the timing belt had been changed. He also wouldn't evaluate the air conditioning until the outside temperature was warm enough to get an accurate reading. Much as I simply wanted both these things fixed, he wouldn't do it for me if it wasn't necessary. This showed great integrity and professionalism. He put the proper oil into the car as well as the proper non-corrosive anti-freeze. It's the little details that will keep my car running like it's brand new. I am very happy to have found L&M. Definitely worth the trek from Manhattan.

I am a very fussy guy with a probably too close and personal relationship with my 94 BMW 7 series. These are magnificent cars but can be bedeviled with lots of little problems which my other mechanic had thus far been unable to really analyze and address. Where they kept just tossing my money at the problem, Bill and Michael at L and M really took the time to listen to me, drive the car with me, diagnose it right the first time. Very patient with explaining what they are doing and why. My one suggestion: bring your car in first thing on Monday if you can. They get steadily more busy as the week goes on.

These guys are THE BEST. PERIOD. We did our homework, like many car owners, and after so many rave reviews...well how could we refuse? We gave them a call and headed out after confirming that do check out beat up little Toyota's in disguise. (Some day they'll be caring for our Mustang, Vette, & the Mini we plan to have!) In all seriousness, they treated us like family. I couldn't believe I could feel so at home at their shop. Aside from that 'family friend' feeling, Bill gave our car what she needed, seriously good repairs at a price that didn't make us broke. They even figured out that whomever took care of our car last put a seriously generic part that was killing our oldie ride. They chucked it, got us the right, brand new piece and the next thing we knew we were driving away, quiet and with our new inspection sticker...the old tigress passed the inspection thanks to these guys! Plus, even though they don't do the inspections, they were AWESOME enough after repairs to take them to a near by place, get her inspected and passed and hand the car over to us over all taken care of. OK, IF THAT'S NOT CUSTOMER SERVICE...I REALLY THEN MUST NOT KNOW WHAT IS!!

I felt like our oldie but goody car was being treated as if she was a classic Cadillac. That's just the mechanics...add on the straight to the dire repairs, kind and fully clear explanations, awesome price, and wonderful personal service by all, especially Bill himself, what can I say? It's an honor to do business with these guys. I hope their business lives long and prospers. I will ABSOLUTELY be back. It was a well worth trek out there that I won't mind doing for any auto I have. I have passed their info to my car owning buddies...b/c I know they are getting hood-winked! I LOVE YOU GUYS!!! wait, I think our car loves you more! LOL. Great work, keep up the awesome service! I've been from Riverhead Long Island to Moncey New York with my Audi A4 looking for a good, honest mechanic. I found him right here in Brooklyn. Billy's a straight shooter that explains in detail and does great work. Highly recommended.

I completely agree with previous reviews. The service is exellent . The price is very reasonable . I had to
change front struts for my toyota corolla ,tires alighment and rotation. I left my car at shop in the morning, by 40:00 pm work was done . The quality is impressive. Very busy place .Had to call in advance.
Michael ( probably owner of the shop was courteous and afer repair was done showed me how my old
struts was worn. Highly reccomend this shop .

these guys don't need any more positive revues, however I was so stunned by their attitude I couldn't help but write one. all of the them made me feel the priority customer, even though there were lots of other cars on the lot waiting for repair just like mine. and it was even more pleasant taking into consideration I brought a very used Golf, and informed them I was a student and couldn't afford a lot. they even talked me out of some of the costly repairs another mechanic suggested. needless to say, I will not take my car to anyone else.

I just purchased a Volvo V70XC from a less than above-the-board dealer and had the "Check Engine" light come on during my drive home, As the car was used, it was "as-is". Needless to say I was freaked (sold my last car 15+ years ago) and looked here (Citysearch) to find a knowledgeable mechanic that knew the in's and out's of Volvos. Needless to say, all roads lead to L&M based on the myriad positive reviews.

The reviews are not hype! They are the genuine article.
Bill (Owner) and Mark ran a full diagnostic, provided a detailed visual inspection and put my mind at ease with an honest and straightforward diagnosis of the car. Instead of trying to hard sell services, Bill actually called the dealer I bought the car from and told him to fix what was wrong with it (emissions / sensors) with no cost to me above his diagnostic (which was very affordable).

My wife and 1-1/2 y/o came with me and even though they were swamped, Bill's guys totally made them feel comfortable and actually took the time to chat with them while I was going therough the car with Bill. Incredible customer service! A client in front of me when I was tabbing out was chatting with Bill and she had been using him for 25 years. 'Nuff said.

L&M is a truly refreshing place - it has a totally old school feeling, but is completely high-tech and accessible. I highly recomment them to anyone with a foreign car and anyone who wants to go to a mechanic and not feel like they're going to get fleeced.

I recently took my BMW to Bill for extensive work. I had been putting the work off for some time because I was worried about the expense and because part of the problem with the car was shoddy work which had been done previously. Bill was friendly and professional in diagnosing the car's problems (he even used a stethoscope to listen to the engine!) and he was very forthright in his conversations with me. The work was done quickly and well - the car is good as new. He even talked me OUT of getting work done which I thought was necessary and he did not. I just wish I had found out about L&M earlier - it would have saved me a great deal of aggravation and money. I recommend L&M without hesitation.

I recently had my VW bugmobile tuned up and ?restored? at L&M after an angry mechanic on Vanderbilt Ave broke a few things and loosened a few belts. I was very impressed that Bill at L&M could do a diagnostic and see the recent history of the car, without me saying a thing. He told me that my battery recently died, and it had, that belts were lose and they were, the oil cap was broken and it was. Also, they cleaned under the hood. I was shocked to see it cleaned.
Overall I trusted my car with him and his very attractive sons and I will make the trip out to Utica Ave. whenever I have a car issue.

L&M saved me from an Audi dealer's repair shop. To make a long story short, the dealer's work was incompetent-- they wanted to charge me 6K to rip out my transmission. To be fair, a dealer is not meant to save a car-- only to handle cars that are on warranty. For anything that requires real analysis, you need to go to Bill @ L&M. I won't let anyone else touch my car.

You'll be very impressed with their follow-up and attention to detail.

Recently, I brought my BMW for service at L & M after I read all of the wonderful reviews. I have been looking for mechanics who I could trust with my car, and I do not need to look elsewhere. Bill, his sons, and wonderful crew of mechanics did wonderful work on my car! They explicitly and honestly told me what work needed to be done and helped me evaluate the pros/cons of having the repairs done now vs. later. Bill also discovered something that the dealership had neglected to fix. Prior to coming to L & M, I went to BMW dealerships for service. Last year however, the dealership told me that I needed to have all kinds of expensive repairs done, which I did not believe or do. Interestingly, when Bill and his crew checked those same areas, he told me that almost all of them were fine! In short, L & M did fabulous work on my car (it hasn't run this well in years!) and provided great customer service. Prior to leaving, Bill insisted that we go out for a test drive, and then called a week later in order to check how the car was doing. I recommend L & M very highly, and I am happy that I finally have found a great mechanic!

Spent three digit bucks for towing plus three days worth of new problems made by a local mechanic, called bill for an advice, as usual Bill made correct diagnosis over the phone which the local mechanic could not fix (period).

Eventually towed the e28 to Bill's place (a crossed three counties) and fixed entire problems including the ones that caused and gift wrapped by the local mechanic within no time.

I personally have dealt with over 20 mechanics for my bmws and I have never came crossed a master mechanic like bill (he really listens to your car!!).

It is always comfortable to go back to Bill's shop (they really treat you as if you are a long time friend) and I know Bill and his crew will do what ever it takes to fix the beamer...

I bough my first car ever, without knowing enough about it and made the mistake of not checking it out properly beforehand. Needless to say i got scammed, and was left with a car needing substantial repairs. In this hopeless situation I was dreading the experience of going to a mechanic, but found L&M Foreign cars here on citysearch and decided to take it there to see what could be done. I was met with honesty and understanding, although they were quick to point out my mistake of not checking a used car out properly before buying. I decided to bite the bullet and do the necessary repairs. What was done was done, and L&M would help me sort it out. I handed the car in on a monday, and on wednesday I got the call telling me everything was ready. Very quick service indeed, and absolutely NO bs in the process. They were straight and upfront about costs, and why the repairs where needed. When I came to pick it up, the lifted the car up and showed me what they had done plus showed me the old broken parts. I left a happy customer. A couple of thousand dollars poorer, but with a great running car, itemized bill and a huge weight of my shoulders. Later in the evening, they called me up just to ask if the car was running ok and if I was happy with everything. Amazing. You won't find that kind of concern for your customers at many places(regardless of business) in this country. I strongly recommend these guys.

He took care of the shaking and jerking on the same day and did a diagnostic test. After doing the diagnostic and smoke test, he told me the care needed to have a few tubes that were worn out changed, which required the manifold to be removed to get to the tubes. At this time he reminded me that he was only able to take care of a few things that would be done on that day because he would be gone for two weeks on vacation and to bring the car back on 1/8/07. When I returned on 1/8/07 he did the final repairs and kept his promise of his competitive price (did a review).All of this is written to say that L&M mechanic shop is a diamond in the ruff. It is mostly likely one of the few mechanic shops in New York that have a strong interest in the customer and runs high on integrity and customer satisfaction. During the entire ordeal Bill explained EVERY little detail about what needs to be done and asked me to come from home to see what is being fixed. He also went along with me on a test drive to make sure the things he promised were fixed, were actually fixed. Thank you L&M and you have a valued customer for life. Many other reviewers have attested to the honest service and high-quality work at this shop, and I can add my voice to the choir. The service is great. When my 1992 Range Rover stalled near the shop, Bill even sent a mechanic to get me started and bring the car back in for a free check-up. They may charge a bit more than other shops, but they're careful with your money: they clearly described the value of more expensive repairs and were happy to let me forestall less important work. They were also happy to have me bring in my own parts when I could find high-quality alternatives for less. I'm no mechanic, but of the two repairs I've gotten so far (starter work and a major tune-up) their work has produced results that were even better than I expected. I am a happy returning customer. The only drawback is the lack of a nearby subway, but the express bus to the subway is only a couple of blocks away, and it is well worth the extra effort knowing that the job will be done carefully and properly.

Bill and Michael really do their best to help you understand how to properly maintain your vehicle and avoid costly repairs in the future -- they truly are enthusiasts at what they do. The staff is on point, the repairs are prompt, and there are no surprises when you get your bill. They're 'matter of fact' when it comes to diagnosing your car and being honest with the customer when it comes to mandatory repairs, and they strive to satisfy. Yes, they also answer the phone and are personable. They get to know you on a first-name basis.

L&M is mostly affordable -- not cheap, but then again you get what you pay for: expert service. Not a rip-off like the stealership, and not poor workmanship from a shade tree mechanic. If you're a foreign car owner, don't let your stealership convince you that 'they know your foreign car the best'. There are many quality independent mechanics out there, and L&M is one of them.

When you're knowledgable and true to your profession like Bill and Michael, it shows.

I found out about this shop and am very pleased. As a single female I usually feel like mechanic shops will take advantage of you... BUT this shop is quite the opposite. They take the time to educate you, they provide an itemized bill, they let you know if the repair is of high or low priority, they accomadate your schedule and their work is reliable... On my way to Cambridge almost 2 months ago, I took my 2002 Passat into the DEALER for a quick oil change and a lightbulb. I was told that they would have to clean out the engine and replace a hose...$675+$90. I took my car back after paying almost $300 for them to do the oil change and labor for ALMOST putting in a lightbulb...did I mention that I'm a student?

So out of nowhere, my brake failure light comes on this week. The car manual directed me to the DEALER and that was it for me. I did a search on the net and came up with L&M FOREIGN CARS which seemed to have a great reputation. Licensing was displayed clearly on their site and they'd been in business for almost 40 years.

Billy, the owner, and his son Michael are an auto repair Dream Team with a super-knowledgeable staff, and superior customer service. Upon inspection of my VW, L&M immediately informed me that my engine DID NOT have to be cleaned out as my DEALER had warned me, and that it would actually cause harm to the engine...I would just have to change the oil every 2-3000 miles. Not only that, but I was driving on a BROKEN AXLE and some other minor issues. All of which were presented to me for my eyes to see. Mind you, the DEALER NEVER NOTICED THE BROKEN AXLE (and it wasn't a recent occurence). They waited for my go ahead before any repairs were made and were able to get me a $790 axle for $198 in a matter of minutes, which I don't guarantee everytime, but Michael tried REALLY hard to find the best deal and called around! I'm soooo grateful!

For a COMPLETE OVERHAUL of the car INCLUDING REPAIRS, I ended up paying LESS than what I would've payed the DEALER to simply clean out the engine! It was worth my traveling down from the Mount Vernon area to Brooklyn! My car hasn't run like this since it was purchased in 2001!

A couple of his regulars showed up towards the end of my day and it was like an L&M FORIEGN CARS infomercial...They will not bring their cars to anyone else and neither will I.

Fast quality service...No Waiting...Replaced my exhaust system on the spot. Bill was very knowledgeable and friendly and was more than happy to walk me through the entire repair process from start to finish. What was so different about my visit to L&M was that the mechanic really took the time to explain what might be causing my car to flood during storms and what he could do to fix it. I ate breakfast at the diner down the street while he worked. When I returned, I found my car fixed and even completely cleaned and vacuumed. While fixing the flooding problem, the mechanic replaced my cabin filter, which he showed me. It was covered in filth.

He then changed the oil, and while I was waiting, showed me how to visually inspect my brakes. I followed him as he ran around the garage, showing me old, worn brake disks and compared them to new ones, showed me how to inspect my own brake pads. His son pointed out to me the underparts of my car and how to change my oil (which I'll still leave to the experts with equipment). Then we played with the dogs while someone else cleaned my engine. I really didn't want to go back to work. It would have been much nicer to hang out there all day and learn about cars.

The crew at L&M is not only the best I've seen in technical abilities, but also in customer service. They knew exactly what needed to be fixed, and I had solid price estimates, long before any work was started. In addition, they completely understood my financial situation an helped me prioritize the work that was essential to safe vehicle operation. As soon as we agreed on what needed to be fixed, the employees went directly to work, and had my vehicle completed under the estimated completion time. I cannot stress enough how much I recommend this shop. I will certainly bring my vehicle back for any further service.

well i took my car to soooo many shops an they all told me the can fix the problem well after spending $1100 dollars and the car was going dead when i was going 60 miles was not good ,so i took this car to l and m foreign cars and in 2 days the car was done and tested ,he even took the car home, thanks BILL YOU HAVE A COSTUMER FOR LIFE

I made the mistake of going to a Manhattan BMW dealership after I bought my 1991 M5. Bad call. The price was through the roof, and they couldn't help me unless I signed away my children's future. A friend of mine, who races M3's, said I needed to find a guy in a lab coat wearing a stethascope... sort-of the cliche BMW mechanic. Well, I found him.

I found out about L&M on this site, and decided to give it a try. I commend myself for an excellent choice. They have the tools and the know-how to fix my car! Bill and his son are excellent. They fixed my problem, and answered every question I had. If you own an older BMW, you can't go wrong with L&M. I'm going back in a few weeks to fix my door handle (a little sticky). I'm not rich because I own a bimmer; I just like them. They understand that. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

If you have a VW/Audi - go to L & M. Bill was very clear about what he needed to know what was wrong with my car (1999 Passat V6). I had it worked on previously by another honest mechanic - but I NEEDED a technican. He even called the previous mechanic to ask what work they did!

All German cars NEED maintenance and tweaking - even when everything is working fine. That's what I appreciate about them - they are precision machines and must be treated as such. Oddly enough, I suspected that my car hadn't been fixed specifically the first time - Bill helped me with this conclusion.

Bill, Mike and Mark have been helpful and clear about my car issues - and what I could have done to fix the problem right IF I saw them first.

Yes, the location is out of the way - but their attention to detail isn't. With the quality issues VW has experienced the past five years, L & M should be able to get you back on track with your car.

Should I have a need for a technician for any German car in the future - I'll know where to go.

L & M was a godsend. I just moved across country and was worried about the stereotypical auto mechanic rip off. Luckily I found this place... They suggested a towing service that was quick and polite. My car was serviced that day. I was called every step of the way in order to insure both my understanding of the damage and to prevent any unaffordable repairs. As soon as my car was ready I picked it up and was warmly recieved. There was no confusion or frustration , ask for bill or michael

You won't belive the service you get from these guys. They fixed things the dealers overlooked for years -- I mean important things like the fuel filter. After Bill gave our car a thorough going-over, our car is running great -- so great that it's like a different vehicle. I'm glad we found L&M. Bill is our kind of repairman. He tells you what you need, what you don't need, and what you should consider doing soon.

We used to take our car to dealerships, one in Manhattan, one in Greenwich, CT and one in Queens. Our understanding was that the dealerships had PROPER parts. That may be true. However, that doesn't mean they'll put them on YOUR car. Those parts might be reserved for the showroom cars.

Bill put good parts on our car -- the proper parts for our car! And he put them on correctly for no additional charge! (sarcasm intended) We'll trust our car to Bill and his sons at L&M from now on.

Just one of those places that you're surprised to find can survive in NYC--a fair, competent, *friendly* auto shop. Billy clearly knows his stuff, and ordered the needed part right in front of me so I could see how much it cost. You might pay more for labor than you would somewhere else, but the peace of mind is well worth it, especially after I went the Pep Boys route and got burned more than once. One look at his customers (and their rapport with Billy) when you drop your car off and you realize L&M is someplace worth coming back to. He's got my business.

I have a car that is difficult to repair and hard to find parts, a 1992 Jaguar XJS Convertible 12-cylinder, but Billy has an uncanny ability to diagnose the problem and fix it right the first time! He takes time and care to make sure the job is done right. And he doesn't keep the car so long that you feel that you are waiting forever like some other shops I have used.

The other good thing about Billy is that he will tell you when you don't need something done, so you will never spend money needlessly at L&M. That makes me feel confident that I am getting what I need at a reasonable price. That kind of trust factor is rare these days.

I highly recommend L&M for any repair job, but especially for cars that are hard to fix that may not get the right treatment anyplace else.

I spoke with Bill on the phone first about the leak I was having and he asked me lots of questions to help identify what was going on and warned me that, given what I was describing, I would be looking at a costly repair, but he also reassured me that we wouldn't know anything for sure till he looked at the car for himself. After reading these reviews, I decided to head out in search of 1331 Utica Ave. (I'm fine on subways in brooklyn, but by car...help!). I'm glad I went in. Bill lifted car up while I was there, had me look at the leak myself and explained that the leak didn't exactly match up with what he thought was the problem. Turns out it was the auxiliary rather than the main pump that had failed and it was still going to be an involved job. Bill talked me out of doing some other other work we discussed since it would involve many more hours of work, and wasn't really necessary at that time. Not only did I get a full explanation of what went wrong and my old parts, but I got color photos showing me several steps of the repair job with half my engine pulled out and laying on the ground - a picture really goes a long way to illustrate why a job can be so inolved. I'll be going back the next time my A6 needs any work because I have dealt with 3 other mechanics in the 2 years I've owned the car and Bill is the ONLY one who talks to you like he actually cares about your car -and your wallet! Billy and Mike really know how to take care of their customers. They take the time to explain to you what's wrong with your car and only fix what is needed. Whatever your level of experience is, I would still recommend them. My only complaint is not really related to their service but about my BMW car parts. I was warned before by a friend that BMW parts cost a lot more than domestic cars parts, but I guess I learned the hard way.

thanks citysearch i have a 1999 audi a4 ,the wipers ,signal lights and interior lights did not work well i took this car to 4 shops and they all told me it will cost about $ 1800 to $2200 to fix the problem well i left and found l and m foreign cars in brooklyn not only they fixed the problem they even reset my computer because the engine light was on for about 6 month it was only a vacum hose, the total price was $680.00 i had water in my electrical system .. great shop thanks BILL

L&M's Audi service is the most capable and knowledgeable of any Audi service I've ever used; including (especially) the NY area dealer Service Depts. They promptly diagnosed and repaired my '99 Avant overheating problem, following up on the repair with a phone call a few days later. Even my engine compartment was gleaming when they were done. The cost was fair and the car returned promptly. All repair shops could take a lesson from this family-run shop with attention to detail.

Pros: Master Mechanic. Very Audi knowledgeable

I have been a customer over five years and the service is great, I am told whats wrong and whats the cost and always fix to run like new. service is good and very reasonalble cost. I choose L & M over anybody, they are experts. try them out or call them ask for bill or michael .its a father and son shop... good job guys

The father and son team at L & M was a godsend. I just moved across country and was worried about the stereotypical auto mechanic rip off. Luckily I found this place...

They suggested a towing service that was quick and polite. My car was serviced that day. I was called every step of the way in order to insure both my understanding of the damage and to prevent any unaffordable repairs. As soon as my car was ready I picked it up and was warmly recieved. All sections of my bill were broken down and shown to me. There was no confusion or frustration in what is usually an upsetting ordeal.

I have a 1998 Passat and just had L and M do a major service (tune up, timing belt, control arms, tires, fluids, etc.). They were extremely knowledgeable, thorough, honest, and attentive to detail (this is critical). They saved every part to show and justify the repairs, and gave a comprehensive estimate. They aren't cheap, but the prices are reasonable for this quality of work. Rarely have I met a machnic this knowledgeable. I even got a follow up call from Billy to check on the work. Except for the terribly inconvenient location (and no Saturday hours), I have nothing but the best things to say.

I went over there for the first time yesterday with my guards up, simply because it is very difficult to find an honest mechanic shop these days. By the time I left, I felt as comfortable as a faithful customer of way back. The fact of the matter is, they gave me honest quotes, reasonable prices, and devoted a lot of time explainig things to me.

By the way, there's a guy who sells 100% natural juice to local businesses in the area, If he happens to shows up while you' re there try pineapple apple! Best Juice I 've ever had!!

These folks have been working on European cars - Volkswagen, Audi, BMW, Benz, etc - for many, many years and have more expertise than anyone I've come across. Anyone with such a car knows it is hard to find a specialist. When my car broke down a year back, I went through three different garages, all manner of crooks, before I found L&M in the phone book. Now I come here for everything from headlights and oil changes to major engine work. I drive all the way from Manhattan for this service. Invaluable!!!!

I'd just like to thank the guys L AND M FOREIGN CARS for their fine work and their help, when I was in need. My grand daughter was visiting from miami and had a problem with her car. We called for towing service and expected only the worst. but fixed the car Small town service in NYC, I did not believe it was possible. I found out about this shop and am very pleased. As a single female I usually feel like mechanic shops will take advantage of you... BUT this shop is quite the opposite. They take the time to educate you, they provide an itemized bill, they let you know if the repair is of high or low priority, they accomadate your schedule and their work is reliable... I have a bmw - which not everyone can work on - BUT this shop is a keeper and I come all the way from Queens :)

I took my 1997 Toyota to L&M about a month ago. My car was continuing to have problems after having been repaired at another auto garage. Bill and Michael diagnosed the problem the same day and gave me a rough estimate for the repair. The car was ready in 5 days, it took 3 days for the replacement transmission to arrive. Bill explained the problem in detail, showed me the defective transmission and the replacement transmision and then we took the car for a road test. Since having my car repaired at L&M, I have driven over 1000 miles without any problems. Highly Recommended.

I TOOK MY CAR TO L AND M FOREIGN CARS AND HE ASK ME ALL THE QUESTIONS ABOUT MY CAR PROBLEMS ,AND HE EXPLAIND TO ME THAT HE WILL ROAD TEXT MY CAR AND THEN HE WIIL PUT THE CAR ON THE COMPUTER ,I NEVER SEEN A COMPUTER SYSTEM LIKE THIS SHOP HAS ALL THE ORIGINAL SCANERS ,WELL HE TOLD ME IT WAS A SENSOR AND HE WILL PUT IT IN BUT BEFORE HE TOLD ME THE PRICE AND THE DIAGNOSTIC CHARGE .WEEEL I TOLD HIM TO GO AND DO THE JOB, AFTER 1 HOUR ,HE PUT THE CAR ON COMPUTER AGAIN AND RESET THE SYSTEM ,AND WE WENT FOR A RIDE MY CAR NEVER HAD SO MUCH POWER AS IT HAS NOW .PS I TOOK THIS CAR TO THE DEALER 5 TIMES AND TO 2 OTHER SO CALLED MEECHANICS ,AFTER $2000.00 IT ONLY COST ME $210 AND MY CAR FEELS GREAT ... 1) Didn't rip me off
2) Knew what he was doing
3) Lots of experience,
4) Has all the right computer stuff so I'd like to pass on the good will. I AM SOO HAPPY to have a good mechanic!
5) Says how much it is BEFORE doing the work and gives you the old parts when he's done. Great customer service, great mechanic

Knowledgeable staff, courteous and professional. Upon hearing item after item needed to be repaired on my 2 year old car from another shop I was recommended to 'Billy' at L and M Foreign Cars. I was told he was trustworthy and honest. Boy did he live up to the recommendation. He was extremely thorough, explained all the necessary repairs and completed the work on time! L and M Foreign Cars have found a customer for life. A must try for all the women who have been brushed aside with general statements from mechanics in the past.

I have brought my cars to dozens of mechanics over the years, and none have been nearly as good, honest and forthcoming with information as L and M Foreign Cars has. I brought in my 92 Audi 100cs in with a slim hope of fixing my computer problems (car was flooded years ago). All the other mechanics I brought my car to were unable to fix it, not only were they unable to fix it, but they ripped me off telling me"this is what you need". Bill and his son Michael were for lack of a better word EXPERTS. They were honest, they told me what was wrong with it, what it would cost to fix and all before touching my car! Since going to them, I have told all my friends and family to go to them. Great technicians hands down! A+ across the board!
