.

I had horrible experiences visiting the dentist as a child and consequently, a trip to the dentist's office still leads to a lot of anxiety. Dr. Shepherd had come highly recommended, but I was still pleasantly surprised by my experience.

The office is tucked off to the side of a shopping center at the corner of Cimarron and Mason Rd. The outside is not "fancy" and there is just a sign that says "dentist." The office itself is not like any other dentist's offices I have been to. Many of the other offices I have visited in the past have fancy waiting rooms where you sit for extended periods waiting for your appointment. This one was just very simple with a few chairs and some magazines. It didn't matter much anyway because I hadn't even finished filling out forms when they called me back! That in and of itself was impressive!

The hygienist was excellent! She was very quick and friendly. Usually, after my teeth have been cleaned, my gums hurt and I am uncomfortable for the rest of the day, but I didn't have any pain after my cleaning here. She took the time to explain everything to me including areas of concern. They seem to be very focused on preventitive measures.

I was not thrilled when I learned that I needed to have a cavity filled. I had to schedule a separate appointment to do this. They took me back right after I got there (so I didn't have to sit there in the waiting room while my anxiety was increasing). His assistant was very friendly and chatted easily with me about family and travelling, which helped to put my mind at ease. The doctor came in shortly after that and he "walked me through the process" and then he and his assistant talked to me while he was filling the cavity. When he started telling me about what I could and couldn't eat and for how long, I was in shock! I was in and out of there in 20 minutes and I didn't feel a thing...(until the painkiller wore off, of course, but he's not entirely to blame for that!)

The receptionist makes all of the appointments herself in a standard appointment book rather than using a computer. She seems to keep track of everything though! They do call you the night before to remind you about appointments. The one downfall is that it is very hard to get ahold of them by phone. I got their answering service more than I got them. If you do leave a message, they will call you back. Overall, I was impressed and will continue going back!
