Capitol Hill Handyman Review
John was easy to get in touch with, busy but not overbooked, and very pleasant to work with. John fixed some of my doors, windows, unclogged a sink, and installed dimmers. he was willing to talk with a window company on the phone to get the skinny directly from them. He was tidy, friendly with my kids, and someone who respected the level of detail/craftmanship I expect in my house. He is knowledgeable and professional. I recommend him!

I hired John to do a number of projects around my house and for the most part he did a reasonable job on the work done, however there were some problems:

1. John didn't provide an estimate (it was promised "via email" but it never arrived). Without a detailed estimate and task list, John lost track of which projects he still had to do. Also due to the lack of organization he doesn't gather all of the materials for all of the projects ahead of time (more on this later.)

2. John doesn't provide a written contract. In my case I was VERY surprised to learn that in addition to charging $75/hr to go pick up supplies, he also charges a 10% premium over the retail price of those supplies.

3. Due to John's lack of preparation, I paid for more than 4 trips (each lasting at least 1 hr) at a cost of $300 or more for him to purchase supplies! The total price for the supplies themselves was less than the cost to have him go GET them. Remember, in addition to paying for the trip, I also had to pay a 10% premium on the price of each supply.

4. John uses a helper so not all of the work is done by John himself. In fact, John was present less than 50% of the time during this project and. His worker seemed to get stuck when he encountered any sort of a problem and would spend time waiting for John to arrive or call him.

5. John relies on a terrific collection of tools to do accurate cutting and fitting things like doors. Unfortunately in some areas, e.g. dry-walling an outside corner, he didn't use metal edge brackets so the corners aren't even and crumble when sanded or bumped.

6. After 3 days of getting each project I asked him to do about 80% done, John seemed to give up saying that "things were getting expensive." Based on his motivation level and the quality of the work thus far, I agreed to have John finish out the day and leave.

So, instead of having walls patched, sanded, and painted, they've just been patched (something I could have done in a few minutes myself). Instead of having an interior door hung, primed, and painted, it's simply hung. Where John repaired some molding using screws, the counter-sunk screw holes are unfilled and unstained.

In other words, I'm left with most of the detail work I hired a handyman to do in the first place and it cost me an arm and a leg to get here.

John did some minor repairs to my old house including fixing two temperamental toilets, replacing the front door lock, and fixing squeaky doorknobs. He was on time, polite, helpful and reasonably priced. The next time I called him, he came over promptly to help. I would definitely recommend him.

Ratings_icons Nice guys, know what they're doing

aebee

Norm was friendly and professional. Their hourly rate is a bit higher than some other handyman services (and solo guys) out there (it was $75/hr for one job and $65/hour for another job due to a special they were running), but they know what they're doing and there's definitely peace of mind in knowing that they're not going to mess things up and will fix it right the first time--or come back until it's right. Not sure if it's still the case but there was a 2-hour minimum when I used them, so think ahead about all the little things that have been bugging you to get done, and put a list together. That way you don't waste any money by not fully utilizing the 2 hours. You'll be amazed at what Norm can accomplish in 2 hours!

Norm from Capitol Hill Handyman was very friendly and did a great job. The job was supposed to be easy (according to my calculations) but of course there ended up being complications. Norm came up with a creative solution and got the job done well. I will use this company again in the future.

We had to make few repairs in our place like the sliding doors were off the hinge and some leaking noise in the toilet. John was very efficient and prompt in fixing all these small things on time. Very reliable and a great handy man!

I have known John for almost two years. He is great to work with and HONEST. He installed lighting in our family room and an outdoor light as well. I handle his insurance and have recommended him to several of my clients. It's a pleasure to deal with him.

I've had the Capitol Hill Handyman over several times. He is always on time for appointments, does terrific work and cleans up after himself.
He has done electrical work, plumbing, drywall repair, carpentry and even cleans dryer vents and fixed my grabage disposal.
I highly recommend his services!

Ratings_icons John Saved The Day

MikeBrat

John, delivered the goods. He was upfront and honest about costs, showed up at our house on time each day work was done, and performed all work with high standards in mind. The reconstructed door frame they created for us, so we didn't have to replace the 100 year old front door we've grown to love, looks great and and is airtight. They also did an impressive job reinforcing my main deck which was something I brought up with John at the last minute. They managed to source the materials and do the labor involved on our deck the same afternoon they finished the final painting needed on our door frame. We were really impressed and highly recommend John's company if you looking for a handyman (even if you don't live in Capitol Hill).

Pros: Great quality work, fairly priced, very reliable

Cons: None

Repair went as smoothly as possible. I am an out-of-town landlord and the lathe and plaster walls in the bathroom had totally broken down. John worked with my tenant to set-up a convenient time, gave a fair estimate, and completed the project in a timely fashion on budget. Cosmetic result also was superb.

My project ran as smooth as possible - from initial conversations all the way through the guys walking out the door - leaving me with my house improved and even cleaner than it was before. John is a pleasant professional with great follow-though. It just doesn't get any better!

I had always seen John's van around town and thought I'd check out his service. Having had not so great experiences with contractor-types in the past I was very pleased with my experience. Everything went smoothly from initial conversation to end of job. I felt he was honest about his time and wanted to do the work in the most cost effective way. This is important to me because I need to be able to trust my handyman not to try to take advantage. I recommend giving John a call to get all those nasty "to do" items off your list!

What a delightful person. He was professional, gave great advice and didn't charge a thing to come out and give me input. I was so pleased with the meeting concerning my windows that I have asked him to help with a number of other projects that I hadn't intended on getting completed for awhile. Definitely someone you are comfortable with having in your home, around your family and completing your projects.
