The recently opened Taqueria Mi Ranchito on Fifth Street draws attention with a simple, hand-painted sign. From the outside, it doesn??t look spectacular, but the parking lot in front of the building is packed. I find a spot on the sidewalk and hope, the police are at lunch somewhere.

Inside, the dcor is warm, but simple. Multi-colored lights give it a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. I study the short, printed menu: tacos and quesadillas, made with chicken, beef or barbacoa and rolled in flour or corn tortillas. I know I have to try the super quesadilla!

We order at the counter and pay upfront. Two meals and a drink cost less than ten dollars. The friendly cashier promises to bring our food to the table. There are no fountain drinks at this time, although a fountain is present. We receive canned cokes and tall drinking glasses. There is no ice.

The super quesadilla is truly super. We choose chicken and it tastes like real Mexico. Exquisitely spiced and cooked to tenderness, it slows me down to savoring speed. Juice drips past the sweet avocado and red-ripe tomatoes and runs over my fingers. I have to lick them. I can??t let this go to waste.

Not too big, not too small, the quesadilla fills me pleasantly. I wish I were hungrier, so I could try the other succulent choices, but I will just have to come back another day.
