I, too, have sampled for years the wonderful fare at the Lakeshore Grill, though, when Oakland Mall first opened, my mother, aunt, grandma, and I knew it as "the restaurant at Hudson's," or "Hudson's restaurant." (I'm not sure the restaurant had a name at that point). In subsequent years, my mother, aunt, and I knew it as "the restaurant at Marshall-Field's," and now it's "The Lakeshore Grill," though I'm sure my friends and I would sooner place it as "the restaurant at Macy's."

Whatever you call it, it's good to say it's still there (for one thing) unlike dining rooms at Northland, Fairlane, and some other Hudson's locations, and it's still similar in quality (for another thing) to its original incarnation. Fare includes gourmet soups, salads, sandwiches, and entrees; and beverages, including those of the alcoholic variety. Certainly, one of the most popular, nostalgia-inducing items on the menu is Hudson's famous Maurice salad. With its shredded lettuce, ham, turkey, Swiss cheese, sweet gherkin pickles, and Hudson's fabulous, top-secret, Maurice dressing, the flavor is bound to make native Detroiters a little overcome thinking about shopping- and family through the years. I'm a little disappointed to report the last time I ordered a Maurice at the Grill, not long before this review, Lakeshore chefs had changed the the famous salad a bit. Ingredients had been cut- and grouped (ham here, turkey there, etc.) instead of shredded and tossed in with the lettuce as in the old days. But with my knife and a request for more sweet gherkins, I was quickly able to recreate the original Maurice. (Advice to Lakeshore chefs: Don't mess with perfection!)

Another highlight of the Grill are the huge, buttery-good, popovers served with every meal. They were banished from the menu some years ago, but thank goodness the Grill wised-up and brought them back.

As for the room itself, it's still as large and lofty as ever, with a half-wall overlooking the Mall -- a great vantage-point for people-watching unobserved. One December, my mom and I, swept-up in the Holiday-spirit, tossed a five-dollar bill from the balcony to the floor below and watched, delighted, the happy shoppers who discovered it. That remains one of my all-time favorite memories of shopping with my mom!

Whoo! A little verklempt I am indeed, but to wrap up, the Lakeshore Grill's all right by me -- food's good, service is good, and, even though I liked it best when the decor was shabby chic some years back, as opposed to its blander, more conservative look now, the Lakeshore Grill remains among my favorite places to go!

My grandma, my aunt, and myself have been going to this restaurant (inside Macy's) for as long as this particular mall has been open. The service is always top notch. The food is always top notch. The atmosphere is always calm, peaceful, quiet, and a nice place to dine. I highly recommend this restaurant.
