A few friends and I recently decided to try the new Brazilian restaurant in town--EM CHAMAS. We were pleasantly surprised with the atmosphere and the quality of the food, especially since it is a brand new, locally-owned restaurant!
I am relatively familiar with (and thoroughly enjoy!) the churrascaria concept, as I have eaten at others (Fogo de Chao, Chimas, Texas de Brazil) in the past. The all-you-can-eat meat menu--with salad, potatoes and other sides as complements--is unlike anything you will experience at a normal steakhouse. For just a little bit more pricewise, you can not only get the filet mignon, but also an array of cuts of beef, chicken, turkey, lamb, and pork. My preferred meats at Em Chamas were the beef ribs (a MUST TRY) and the flank steak; a companion loved the parmesean-coated pork and the bacon-wrapped turkey medallions. While my visit to the salad bar was not as impressive as some other churrascarias, I still found some great things to go with the meats. I especially liked the buffalo mozzarella/tomato combination and the Brazilian black beans. Also, the server brought out some hot cheese bread (you have to try this!!), yuca flour topping (a Brazilian tradition, but I don't really like it), fried bananas and excellent mashed potatoes. If you're looking for something good to drink, I suggest the caipirinha (a Brazilian rum and lime concoction), or, if you like something a little less potent, go for the vodka version that my server suggested. We didn't have any wine that night, but I recognized a few of the Argentineans as excellent choices--we'll be having those next time!
IN SUM: Em Chamas has not yet achieved the efficiency the churrascaria corporations, but it does offer some things that the others do not:
(1) A calm atmosphere. Unlike my experience at Fogo de Chao, I was actually able to hear what my dinner companions were saying while dining at Em Chamas.
(2) A relaxing experience. At other places, I felt like the dinner was pushed along too quickly. At Em Chamas, the server seemed more willing to let me enjoy the food and beverage, and wasn't concerned about bringing in the "next table".
(3) They don't try to fill you up on the salad and side items. While the bread, salad, potatoes, etc are good, they are not as distracting from the best part of the meal--THE MEATS! (Who wants to pay $30 for salad, anyway!?)
Give it a shot, Kansas City! It's about time a Brazilian steakhouse came to the area!
