The food and the service is good here. But at the weekends it is full of immature obnoxious people. And the bodyguards suck, they allow sick people to get in just because they are friends and let them disturb everyone inside. One time I was with 4 people 3 girls and a guy. One drunk guy approached us and harassed my friends' girlfriend. He was totally drunk and his friends tried to stop him. We went out and told the bodyguard that he was disturbing us and the bodyguard kicked 5 of us out instead of that drunk guy. Because he was his friend . And this guy is still working as a bodyguard there.

This is a fantastic place to:
- have a decent-to-wonderful beer from a pint glass festooned with the lovely mug of E.A. Poe.
- have good food, including multiple vegetarian options.
- escape the d-baggy flavor that old city can sometimes have.
- pay less than you would elsewhere in old city!

Between National Mechanics and The Irish Pol, old city has become tolerable again.

Not your typical Old City bar - National Mechanics is FAR less pretentious and there is no need to dress up (by Old City standards) to go there. The outside is beautiful, and they've done a great job with the inside. The bar is packed on weekends. There is a small dance area, complete with DJ. The only complaint I have is that there are only 2 bathrooms, so you can be waiting in line for upwards of 20 minutes on a crowded night.

Really interesting decorations, such as creepy bugs, and good food for a bar! But by far the best would be the draft beers available. Also not too expensive considering the old city location.

One of the features of this new establishment in the sometimes pish-posh area of old city is the lovely decor without the expense. There were four of us in my party. We each had an entree plus a good amount of beer and our check was under $80! The dark wood of the interior and polished bar gave a feel of eating in the same time period as when the historical building was erected! The only complaint that I had was our waitress seemed a little unmotivated or unhappy. I am in the business myself and I prefer a little personality in my server, but she was fairly efficient enough. I would recommend this as an affordable eatery with a historical Philadelphia theme.

When it comes to gastro-pubs in Philly, there is only one choice if you're in Old City (the heart of Philadelphia tourist attractions.) National Mechanics is a new Philadelphia bar and restaurant that just opened up in Old City.

National Mechanics serves up great food and has one of the best beer lists in the area, and even better prices. And I mean seriously great prices. If you have been to Old City restaurants, you know about the high cost for a meal and a drink, but here you can get great local micro-brews for 2 and 3 bucks and a belly full of food for under 10.

National Mechanics is a pretty family friendly affair until later in the evening (after 8ish) and the kitchen's open till 1, so for anyone looking to go out for dinner and drinks needs to hit this Philly bar up. It's new, (I just discovered it myself) and is bound to blow up soon, so get there now to say you were there first. I know I seem a little over-excited about the spot, but finding a place like this in a neighborhood like this is a great thing, and I figured I'd share.
