I can give this professional free service nothing less than 5 star! I have used them 5 or 6 times in past years for myself and family members. Not only were they caring but waste no time in obtaining the relevant facts and providing only sound information. Ask A Nurse has never left the phone with my having one unanswered question or solicited funding or their hospital.
I have had both comical reassuring conversations (my having thought a situation life threatening for toddler grandson), as well as their recommending my seeking immediate medical attention. Never was I treated disrespectfully for calling or felt any lack of concern or compassion. They go the EXTRA mile and again, thoroughly explain EVERY 'why'. There are no stupid questions. They have even followed up days later asking if the problem had a good resolve!
This week I had the misfortune of an ER visit myself. I did not call. I opted to go to Shawnee Mission Hospital because it was closest. I was admitted. Before leaving I decided to change my Primary Dr. to one in their network because of the quality of care and comfort of my stay. It was world class, the closest I've ever felt to a Mayo. I knew I mattered most! The Drs. were quality, so eager to help and were real people, no waiting to see if someone showed up (that was with a pretty full house). And it went from Drs., to nursing to Lab techs. to housekeeping, everyone. The staff was amazing. -Even the menu, surprising. Every room is private, TASTEFULLY newly decorated and VERY high tech. I was shocked to find this quality hospital with every pleasantry here in our great City. I'm smart enough to know every day can't be the best in any organization. I might have gotten really lucky but I do believe their worst day would have exceeded my high expectations and experiences. Shawnee Mission Hospital is the real deal. I recommend you try them. Start with Ask A Nurse, I'm sure you'll agree!

I would never recommend the Ask A Nurse program at Shawnee Mission Medical Center. When I called, I was treated rudely. She had no interest in helping me. She wanted to talk down to me like I was an idiot. She asked me what treatments I had already applied, and when I mentioned a very well-known, and common poultice for drawing out poisons, she mocked me and demanded to know "where I heard THAT". It was just rude, and ignorant. It was pretty shocking that she had never heard of it, so why would I trust her advice on anything? I'm still upset at how condescending she was. No one deserves to be treated like that. They are not there to help you. They are there to mock you.

The Ask-A-Nurse service is free, and available to everyone. They can answer questions about medical issues or conditions, and help you judge if you need to see your doctor, or go to the emergency room. They can also make appointments for some of the doctors around Shawnee Mission Medical Center, which can be helpful as they are available 24/7. They can also give advice for home care, if a problem isn't serious, and sign you up for health and wellness classes. I've always found them to be very knowledgeable, professional and easy to work with.
