WASTE of time. Reserved a mid-size. sadly, they were out! They down-graded me with no rate reduction! Then had the nerve to try and upsell me to full size. Can you say BAIT & SWITCH? So I cancelled. Went to Alamo, mid-size was comparable

At this point I am looking for a way to take stars away. Maybe I could rate this rental experience a few black holes.
Anyway, the facts.
My wife and I rented a car in Phoenix. A Nissan Sentra. It was cheap, not really all that clean, but it was something to get around town for a few days.
I think it may have been the third day we had it , when that evening while driving west on Northern ave. the glass mirror fell out of the drivers side rear view mirror assembly.
OK I thought. In the morning we called Payless Car Rentals and they told us to
bring the car back as driving it this way could be unsafe. I agree.
Next morning we return the car, fill out an incident report, they give us a different car and away we go.
Let it be said at this point that except for the missing mirror glass from the drivers door and a few miles the car was returned in the same condition as when we first rented it.
We received a different car from Payless Car Rentals, a Mazda something, again not too clean, but suitable to our needs.
A couple days later we returned the car and carried on with our trip, in which Phoenix was only one stop.
A month after we arrived home we received a letter from a representative of Subrogation Management Team, San Antonio, Texas.
In this letter we were informed that we were being held financially responsible for the damages. The letter made no mention of an amount being charged.
A month (approximately) later we received a second letter stating that we owed $1074.15. As we were not involved in any accidents or other incidents we thought this amount to be rather excessive and sent a letter to a representative of Subrogation Management Team, San Antonio, Texas.
In this letter to her we suggested a payment of $191.96 based upon the prices and rates in the letter she sent to us.
A representative of Subrogation Management Team, San Antonio, Texas responded with a letter again asking for an amount of $1074.15. She also included pictures of the license plate of the car we rented and a disassembled car door.( I have worked as a mechanic, and this is why I know that the car door was disassembled. Not damaged.)
This is the last correspondence that we have received and we have not yet responded.
To anyone thinking of renting a car from these people we would suggest (strongly) get all the insurance that they offer no matter how tired you are from travelling (we thought we were doing this but we just did not pay attention. our bad.) Take pictures of everything. Including the people who check your rental car with you. Have them give you a copy of every piece of paper they scribble a note on. Read the reviews on this company.
You get what you pay for!
This is probably going to be an ongoing process. Please stay tuned.
Have fun and good luck!

If I could give a negative rating, I would. The service at the counter was terrible. Person was rude and we received quite the negative attitude when we refused (over and over again) the additional insurance. Then the total cost was well

Was quoted 89 dollars for 3 days, bait and switch is an understatement. When we arrived they said we could upgrade from a ford focus to a nissan sentra, we are not familiar with either, so we asked what the difference was. We were told

As with previous complaint, I was quoted >$30 a day and wound up paying almost $50 ($297 for a five-day rental). This was without ANY of their insurance "schemes" as they are all covered by my personal auto insurance. Car (midsized) was a little rough, but serviceable. While driving from Phoenix to Flagstaff, the "check engine" light came on. We tried the usual: checked oil (down half a quart), any and everything else that could cause the light to come on, including gas cap-cap had NOT been replaced by the firm (I bought the tank of gas, so it would indeed have been their mistake). We called the desk (only place that would take the call) and were told to leave a name and number and they would get back to me. After waiting a while, I decided to press on and keep going. When they FINALLY returned my call TWO hours later, all they could say was that it was probably the signal for the next oil change. They also suggested I return the car to the airport and swap it. As I was some distance away, I delined to do so. No further problems, although the light is still on. Will report if any further difficulties. Will I EVER rent from them again? What do YOU think?

Worst service, lousy cars, they may be the cheapest but I would rather pay $10.00 extra to ensure piece of mind and good service. The receptionist was rude, and it took over 45 minutes to get a rental in front of the line !! I will never rent from Payless again !!!

Don't bother. They advertise low prices, my orbitz reservation was less than $100 for 4 days. My bill from Payless was over $400. Go with the big name places and get better service and prices.

We had a terrible experience as well. After we paid our dues when returend the car, there was an extra charge of $66 appearing on my credit card in addition to what we had already paid which I am disputing its validity. May be it is their way of making money. I will also complain about them to DOT.

Not to mention the Payless gave us a 2008 car with lots of miles on it. The car was scratched all over and looked very old. On the way back it was pouring rain and turned the windshiled wiper which fell off. It was NOT fun at all.

I was quoted a price or $29.95 plus $17 tax online for a "budget" rental. However, at the counter, the total fees exceeded $65. When I was given the keys to the car, they total me to write down all of the exterior damage (scratches, dents, dings, windshield chips, etc.). However, there were so many, that the little diagram was not big enough. In fact, the car had been previously rear-ended and had a damaged rear bumper. When I asked the manager at the counter to help me verify that I got everything, she said she could not and that I would be charged on return if there was any "new" damage. When I heard this, I decided not to rent the car and they attempted to say that I was under contract and that I could not get out of the agreement. Luckily, I pointed out the rental agreement did not say anything about the car being previously wrecked. When I questioned if the airbag had ever been deployed, they immediately refunded my money. Do NOT rent here. Their cars are in very poor condition and, after their hidden fees, you will be much better off going to a reputable company such as Enterprise, Hertz, Thrifty, Budget, etc. PLEASE TAKE THIS REVIEW AS THE TRUTH.

Pros: None

Cons: Long lines, hidden fees, damaged vehicles.

I rented a car for a week, told them specifically when I would be back even including my return flight number. It was 5 days and a few hours after pickup. The clerk entered it into the computer as 5 days instead of a week and I didn??t notice because the price was the same. When I dropped it off I was charged for an extra day despite the fact that the rules call a ??week?? 5-7 days. When I complained the clerk told me that they couldn??t make that sort of change even though it was an obvious data entry error when I picked up the car and that I was should have noticed this at the time. Whatever is on the contract is how it goes. Probably so, and I??ll be looking for this bit of fine print next time I pick up a car somewhere else. The return guy even told me that in Payless lingo a 'week' is 5 days so 6 days would be a week and a day. Gosh, how could I not know that?

At least the line was short, which is what first suckered me in. Apparently others have learned to avoid these folks. Silly me. I sure won't be in it again.

I would have to say my experience with pay-less car rental was satisfactory. Yes they have the longest lines, ( because they are the most affordable) but they were definitely customer friendly). If you are looking to save on car rental , then I would try Payless, but you may have to wait in line for awhile. Just be certain to reservations on line first.

Avoid Payless car rental in Phoenix. Incredibly long lines unlike any other vendor in the common car rental building. No good explanation other than they're not prepared to handle all of the reservations they accept.
